Some of these comments just boggle my mind.
Feels cheap compared to a Macbook Air? BS. I own a Macbook Pro and this is comparable in build quality and materials (magnesium, in case you're wondering). Plus the SP3 screen canes the TF display on an Air - I should know, I owned one and sold it because I got sick of the lousy viewing angles.
App Store a joke? Not enough apps? Every Windows desktop app ever created not enough for you?
If you are wondering what the appeal of this is, it isn't for you. This is a product line designed for productivity. The killer feature is the pen. Do you need/want to take handwritten notes? Do you want to digitally mark up PDFs? Do you want to sketch or manipulate photos in the full suite of Adobe apps?
If you do, the Surface line is incredible. It's a good (not great) tablet. It's a good (not great) laptop. But it's an INCREDIBLE hybrid device. The pen is the key; if you don't need it, buy an iPad or a laptop. It's that simple.
Without the pen, this is just a very premium Windows tablet. But with the pen, there's nothing else like it - including the iPad Pro, which is hobbled by its OS.

Life's too short. Go on treat yourself and flog the Pro 1 for whatever you can get. One thing's for sure and that is when you are lying on your deathbed and asked whether you have any regrets in life, you will not say "I wish i hadn't bought that bloody surface Pro 3 twenty five years ago!"

taken this from microsoft website
Standard limited warranty coverage
With the standard limited warranty you get:
One year of warranty for hardware defects and malfunctions.
90 days of technical support for preinstalled software from the experts at the Microsoft Answer Desk for Surface.
Microsoft Complete
With Microsoft Complete, you get:
Two years of technical support from the Answer Desk.
An additional year of limited warranty coverage.
Accidental damage protection—even from drops and spills.*
You can add Complete up to 45 days after purchase. Just bring your device to a Microsoft retail store for inspection and processing.

Using Microsoft support on the website, I got them to call me about a warranty issue. I explained that I'd bought the Surface from PC World the previous day and they asked me to provide a receipt. After emailing that in, I got a call back and was told that the warranty had been extended until 2018! Nothing special, just went through their procedure.
It might be worth noting that this was one of the machines that had gone through 0 battery cycles so was 'as new'.

Another update - I bought one of these yesterday from PC World (Hull - St Andrews Quay). There is still one left which has around 300 battery cycles but is in good condition. 2 on shelf today at Currys Durham (photo of price ticket):
Both looked in good condition and I couldn't see any yellow colouring on screen but I wasn't in for too long. At least they can be inspected before you buy, I guess. Still a good price considering the new equivalent SP4 will set you back an extra £400.

Tried to get one yesterday in Basildon store.
Stock check showed 2 but they couldn't find them.
So I asked him to check other stores locally.
Harlow was my nearest store and he assured me that if they showed that many they would have them.
Of I went, about 40 minute drive, and got to the store. It was very busy but eventually got someone to check. Guy in warehouse said none out there but they should be in the lockable cupboard under the display.
He found 2, one of which looked heavily used and had a faint scratch on the screen. The other appeared unopened and both had DEMO in pen on the box. One of his colleagues said to him they they couldn't sell it to me today as the demo would have to be removed but to come back tomorrow (which was today).
They were supposed to call but didn't and after spending 15 mins on hold I just went.
Got it and it looks as good as new.
Hope the photo from the Basildon store helps other locate.
Now just need a cheap Surface Pro 3 cover and a dock cheap.

Why is this getting so much heat?
1. Very limited stock
2. Very few stores have them
3. If they're demo, the screen will have been prodded 1000s of times by 1000s of people....
4. £450 aint cheap especially for a lightly used machine.

the one in Milton keynes was without a pen and had a small scratch on the screen so I left it myself (@ 3/1/14 ~ 2:30), Northampton riverside had nothing, and mentioned that the other Northampton store had 1 showing (however after the 3 pristine ones at Milton Keynes turned out to be 1 demo unit) I wouldn't trust their stock system at all.
Also tried Loughborough today, and no surface pro 3s with that sku or the docking station sku at Loughborough or surrounding stores. (confused staff and unreliable stock control FTW)

Checked stores in: Milton Keynes/Bedford/Luton/HighWycombe/Stevenage. All stores had Surface Pro 3 under SKU 113598 BUT all clearance stock marked "pristine" and " ex-display" had same issue: DEMO MODEL i.e. Even PCWorld staff who tried to utilise this deal couldn't for the simple fact the DEMO cannot be easily removed from the machine (tried all sorts of tricks re-installing Windows, reformatting disks etc.). Demo models are owned by Microsoft and are not meant to be made available for sale as clearance stock but staff on PcWorld/Currys simply do not know or don't care - some will be happy to sell you the somewhat "unusable" hardware but some are clued up enough not to go ahead with the sale.

Mine came from High Wycome store - marked as Pristine on the system but had been heavily used. The "demo" software was already removed as they had already updated to Windows 10. HDD Test showed it had been powered on 664 times since Feb 2015. Also had the yellow bar down the screen. Decided against getting it repaired (still had Microsoft Hardware warranty) as this seems to be a major flaw.

Err the demo mode is easily removed - Goto recovery, run a factory reset and it's gone - simple as that.
I had to run it on my first unit but returned it due to the yellow screen issue, the second one was already reset and left at the Windows 8 setup screen - however just to be sure I ran the upgrade to 10 and set it to remove all files/don't keep any files.

And that's why this deal was posted: because it's cheap... well, affordable.
Just remember that your needs will differ from others so because you can't justify the cost or usage/usability of a Surface doesn't mean the same applies to others. Each person's needs and desires are different.
Contrary to what many people seem to think, this site isn't specifically a money-saving website where people primarily seek advice on how to spend their money or what to spend it on. The site is a deals website, whereby people are likely looking to share or find a lower price for something they've likely already considered purchasing.

Yes if you're a student and want to take notes and want an all in one it's a good product. If you're not a student then maybe not much better than a lightweight web browsing iPad with access to thousands of apps and a longer battery life.

Yes except with your car comparison there are running costs with an iPad and PC that isn't a problem.
I have an iPad and desktop Pc so was looking at a surface and after much consideration I concluded I wouldn't use the surface very much as I'd use the iPad in front of the TV and the PC for everything else sitting in comfort with a 24 inch display and proper mouse.
The surface is brilliant if you don't have an iPad and PC . Ie if you're travelling 24/7 or a student who needs an all in one solution. It is also not cheap!

I don't get these surface things if you want a portable then the ipad does that.
Yes they run full win 10 but at home for a couple of hundred quid you can get a pc which runs win 10 faster.
I guess if you live and work on a train or plane then sure get one otherwise what's the point of a second rate win 10 experience on a small screen at a high price ?
ipad and desktop pc probably perfect for 99% of users .
GeordieB to the1beard
31 Dec 151#260
It's not exactly a second rate experience and for 90% of things is faster than my laptop and it has a 12" screen and supports external monitors.
Your right it's not for everyone especially at full price. However your solution is likely more expensive than 449? Say you got a iPad mini for 200 and a desktop PC with monitor for 250 both would underperform the surface by a significant margin.
And if you have need for the stylus for writing or art/design, then it comes into its own.

Are you really expecting to be taken seriously with this comment?
1. Can you kick back on your sofa and use your desktop as conveniently as you can with one of these while still using the applications you want to use?
2. Can you stream your Xbox to your iPad so if someone else is watching the TV, you can get the best of both worlds? Sure, you can do this on a desktop but it may not be conveniently located, especially if you want to keep an eye on the TV in between playing your game.
3. Anyone who knows about a Surface Pro 3 has heard about an iPad. The mere fact they're considering the Surface Pro 3 suggests that the iPad may not quite meet their needs or wants.
4. You've just advised potential buyers to have two devices. For some people, they don't need or want two devices: they want one device that can do both. The only major advantages a desktop will provide the vast majority of users over a Surface Pro 3 is memory, storage and expandability but that comes at the cost of size and portability. I know few people these days who need or want a desktop; most of the people who do are either power users, gamers, designers or older people who use a computer sparingly and probably had the same desktop for the last 5 years.
5. There is no device in the Apple world that can legitimately be compared to the Surface 3 and above. You would need to have a device that runs OSX in a tablet form to be able to make an accurate comparison so comparing a Surface to an iPad and desktop combo doesn't quite make any sense.
6. Even if you were to compare a Surface Pro 3 at this price point to an iPad Air 2 64GB (factoring in the space used by the Windows 10 OS), this still works out to around the same or cheaper, especially for the persons who managed to get a Surface Pen in the deal. Sure, the iPad has some simplicity advantages but each device has its advantages over the other.
The reality is, the people interested in this want a Surface Pro 3, not an iPad and desktop! You're essentially saying, "Don't buy an Audi A6 Estate; buy a Smart car and a Ford C-Max instead."

Here we go again. Read comment #82. The killer feature of the Surface is the PEN. You cannot use a precise active pen with a regular iPad and the iPad Pro is crippled by iOS.
Faster? For a couple of hundred quid? That is total rubbish and you know it. And if you're talking about building a flipping PC for that money...not exactly portable, is it?
It's far from second rate, especially considering the touch screen capability, detachable keyboard and active pen input. Also, 12+ inches is hardly small, especially for a tablet - and this IS a tablet. It's sold as such, without an included keyboard.
You are absolutely right. And the Surface is perfect for the remaining 1% that doesn't just want it but NEED it. If you need the pen, you need the Surface.
The Pro 4 keyboard is much better, with improved key spacing and a much nicer (and larger) glass trackpad. The older trackpad is merely tolerable. I wouldn't consider the Pro 3 keyboard any more.
The new pen is also better. The interchangeable tips are a nice touch as is the eraser, but it's not enough of an improvement to justify £50 if you already have the Pro 3 version. Also, the magnetic attachment won't work (only sticks to the Pro 4).

Really pleased I did, just been to South Shields to buy a hardly used Corporate bought Surface Pro 3, boxed with all accessories, pen etc and the Keyboard in black unused.
Guy bought it for his business but could not get away with Windows 8 and I didn't have the heart to tell him that you can upgrade to Windows 10 pro.
As it's a Corporate bought version, I have no personal warranty, but my account works fine and it restored no issue. The guy has given me his business number if I have any issues in the future.

Hi, HUKD'ers
I just got one from the Silverlink yesterday, the guy thought it was new at first but then got it from the storeroom and it had Demo on the box, but the box was in good condition but it had definitely been opened.
I got him to open it and it had a couple of fingerprints on the screen but I got him to wipe the screen and I inspected it pretty closely, not a mark on it, no scratches and all accessories in place. It looked brand new.
Obviously I was worried about how long it had been out for and how much damage it might have taken, so to get an estimate I looked at the Smart data for the SSD in HDTune, it was showing SSD power on time of about 6hrs. So I don't think it has had much use at all.
Also checked for warranty and it registered fine, and shows active until end of Mar 2016. Not great but enough time to see if banding develops, and I am going to speak to MS anyway and see if they will extend it to match the Currys receipt. Shy bairns get nowt as they say.
If you do your due diligence, and buy with a discount or cashback credit card and I think this is a pretty good bargain, works out at £427 with Amex 5% cashback.

This thread is teaching me that people are a lot more willing to go through hassle for this device than I am. In all honesty I found it way too heavy to comfortably use as a tablet for long periods anyway. Good luck to those who are attempting to get new replacements anyway, if anyone was after one of these and has the time to get it sorted (or doesn't mind the yellow banding) then it's a decent buy.

"Lot of hassle though isn't it? And why would you pay another £210 out? That would make it £759."
It would still be cheaper than brand new and Microsofts returns are meant to be quite good, it would be £659 although for around a £100 more you can get an entry level Surface 4.
"The thing with Currys is they won't always agree with you that a fault exists."
It's on them to prove that, considering that a yellow band across your screen exists, it's not normal operation and that both Microsoft and Apple had similar issues and replaced them (due to it being a manufacturing issue)
It's not an age thing either...
"They might refuse a repair and just offer a refund"
If you can get a partial refund and keep the item (then sort it with Microsoft), would be more viable - if not then it's probably better to get the refund.
"this is about £90 less than an A grade at Cex with a 2 year warranty
I doubt CEX would repair it either, the screens are glued in and require specialist machinery to remove - I'd guess they would either give you a replacement if they had it in stock or refund/voucher you.
"These will have taken more of a hammering than most second hand Surfaces ever will"
I can't speak for your tablet, but the hardware I got was in excellent condition bar the screen - Battery holds over 95% of design capacity and the SSD has been barely written to.

Lot of hassle though isn't it? And why would you pay another £210 out? That would make it £759. The thing with Currys is they won't always agree with you that a fault exists. They might refuse a repair and just offer a refund. Many factors are at play here that could make this a massive pain in the backside, considering that we are not talking about a MASSIVE bargain here - this is about £90 less than an A grade at Cex with a 2 year warranty and maybe £60 cheaper than the average selling price on eBay. We aren't talking about even a third off here. These will have taken more of a hammering than most second hand Surfaces ever will, and on top of that the only warranty is with Currys, who are notoriously crap
hjf288
30 Dec 15#225
"This means you might run into issues getting a repair, since they will ALL be out of warranty. "
Microsoft will replace it for £210 with a new refurb with a 90 day warranty.
Also if they didn't state it was sold as seen or declare the defect on sale - I don't think they can refuse you.
Additionally, the yellow banding issue seems common enough that you could class it as a manufacturing defect?
Will Currys do a partial refund and let you keep it? If so going the Microsoft route would be more viable
misterleoni
30 Dec 15#224
Looks like these are all early models so all will have the yellow banding as they will have been lit for long periods. Had a store call me back today who checked their three remaining and told me they all had this banding. They said that if a customer mentions the banding at POS then it is 'sold as seen' as it's just a cosmetic issue. This means you might run into issues getting a repair, since they will ALL be out of warranty. The only ones that won't are the lucky few who got sealed units, as their manufacturer warranty would activate once they went online. If you buy one of the ex demo models and you don't like the banding then you either have to suck it up and live with it (it's not THAT bad; just annoying) or try and get Currys to fix it. Not sure how much I trust them to sort it out myself, since if you send it off and it comes back with them saying 'we can't see a fault' then your 7 days are up and you're stuck with it.
Taking mine back now. Shame as it's in really rather good condition. £449 starts to look like a lot of money when you factor in the various concerns here though.

30 Dec 15#223
Reading this thread and the amount of people who got sealed boxed items - about 3 people one thing is quite clear - these are all used demo units.
When this was released stores had one to four units on display and one demo unit to carry around.
After a set time, some stores cut back the display so only having maybe one on display, the rest were boxed.
Some stores kept all on display until the Surface Pro 4 arrived.
If a unit became faulty (yellow screen) then Microsoft most likely sent a replacement demo unit, so the store had an extra one.
Overall the message is quite clear.
These are Ex Display, Ex Demo units and are priced accordingly.
Do not purchase if you are wanting a new item or a warranty as you have a slim chance of getting either.

Does the Pristine condition on the system mean they have them in stock ? When I searched for the sku in store they had 3 pristine condition and 1 customer return (I purchased it but returned it as it had a yellow banding on the left hand side of the screen) just wondering if they fobbed me off.
In Chester I quoted the sku number and it said there was 3 pristine - after looking for around 10 minutes he came back with a surface 3 I think they realised they were very good deals and wanted it for themselves or as they told me they were ex display models
This is the one I've been using for almost a year; good protection.

30 Dec 15#217
The warranty with Microsoft started when the Demo unit was first used, you buy a EX DEMO unit so you know the pitfalls, that's why they are cheap.
Not sure on the store warranty, think you should be okay there, but they could have disclaimers on ex demo stock.
Microsoft will not be bothered if the warranty is out of date, they have covered their product and it lasted for the life of its cover. You could go down consumer rights but that's with the seller, not the manufacturer.
Morale of the story, usually a reason ex demos are cheaper, so don't complain that you bought a used product and it has no warranty.
Great for the few who snagged sealed unused units though as they get their warranty and an unused product.

Basher Walls
29 Dec 15#215
Yep as I thought. Devices are registered as soon as they hit the internet.
So as you need to have the Surface Pro 3 connected to the internet to activate windows, all Demo units will be just about out of warranty, if not already.
You will only be lucky if you have a totally sealed unit.

I went to Currys White City today and they had 2 listed, one was on display and the other wasn't to be found.
PC World Stretford were showing 5 as pristine but the guy there wouldn't sell them due to missing parts, software issues and potential hardware issues.
Managed to pick one up at my local Currys however the screen has the infamous Surface Pro 3 yellow band on screen issue - but the exterior is in good condition.
Are they likely to repair it or just refund? I'd prefer a partial refund (and to keep the device) so I could get Microsoft to ship a replacement for £210
This wasn't factory reset, but luckily didn't need a password to do so.

Five in stock in Cheaterfield - all for sale, all ex demo. Scratches on all of them - although only light. Screens generally decent condition but for the odd micro scratch. Yeah i looked them up and showing 3 pristine in PC World Lisburn , that was around 3pm yesterday.
I work in a different store though that didn't have any.
If they have a yellow sticker on display then they sell the demo model.
Even if its showing stock , they could be anywhere in the warehouse.
Maybe staff kept them but i doubt it , they are all on minimum wage and not like they have £500 plus they would simply reserve them and take them off the system.
My advice is to drop in when your passing , next time they do a stock check they will probably find them and put them on clearance

Been humming and ha-ing over one of these for a while but couldn't bring myself to commit to the full cost. Popped up to my local store, Staples Corner, N London and eventually bagged one today. Initially there was no charger or pen, but they found the charger and then offered 10% off for no pen! So I can get a pro 4 pen instead. So £405 in the end. It looked good, in plastic wrap, shown working, but they had to get tech peeps to factory reset so I have to go back for it later. Was told the 1 year warranty still applies. But they said it's the only one they had (despite system showing 3).

Why? The Macbook Air has a much better battery life and when you take the MS SP3 and add the keyboard it will weigh about the same so what advantage do you get? They told me all were ex display. Like someone else pointed out, it's down to luck with regards to the SP3 being used or not from the looks of it. Not seeing many people come away with new SPs on the back of the heat of this thread.
Buying a second hand surface pro 3, that's been looked after - probably suggests it'll be fine for many a year if it's still working. Touch wood - I've never had a tech product fail on me.
It's just keeping a look out. Deals like that are few and far between - but it's not really hard to come by them in and around the currys figure. Few currently active with best offers.
Then you get the standard people, who look for a deal just to sell it on. Shame on you - I see he was fleeced into an upsell product too, ha.

29 Dec 15#123
These are classed as new, you'll get a one year guarantee once you log on with your MS account. Mine looks in great condition, but I suppose it may vary. You'll be very lucky to get the same spec second hand on eBay for anywhere near this price (with no guarantee) plus, if you don't like it just return it - not as easy with eBay.
A trickle charge for a year is better than hundreds of power cycles in real world usage too.
You need to ask at the desk using the stock code - the two in Chichester were not on display.

Remember ex demos have been plugged in for over a year and that's not good for these batteries.
Once the battery dies a repair through Microsoft is about £400 plus.
It's not a easy part to replace and no cheap battery replacement like apple.

Definitely hit and miss. Sheffield Meadowhall retail shows in stock but wouldn't sell any. Meadowhall showed 1 but didn't have it in when they said. I honestly wouldn't bother yourself. Check the sides where the keyboard would be placed too. The one I bought was all dented and marked. If you're shelling out £450, you want it in pristine. Remember, it's not that great a saving in the first place. (Can also buy it second hand on ebay for around this figure, which will be looked after).

It's not really a good comparison. You should be comparing the Surface Pro to either a Macbook Air or 13" Macbook Pro as they run desktop OS'.
But if comparing to an iPad then it depends if you like Windows or iOS.
Applications or Apps.
Producing vs consuming content.

I was going to trade up from a Surface 3 128gb but not going to pay this sort of money for a fingered and groped by randoms tablet which will have so many issues in no time at all.
If these are ex demo, the battery will be already past its best and its non changeable (for most non techs) so the device will be dead sooner than it should.

Swindon Greenbridge has one, but won't let it go as it's "a demo unit and had demo software installed, so can't be sold until it's wiped". Non-pristine as well apparently, so going by what I hear on here it was most likely in terrible condition anyway. Thanks for the heads up OP, adding of the SKU was brilliant as the initial staff member just blankly said "nah mate sold out, look we've got none on display" but then the SKU helped track it down. The only thing I'd like to add to this whole thread is.....
Since Black Friday the price point for pretty much all SSD and USB Flash memory products has dropped quite dramatically.....this trend looks likely to continue early next year as more fabrication plants come online (also Sandisk just got bought so a market share price war looks likely to start soon). Sub £100 500GB memory units will become the norm and this is bound to have a knock on effect on tablets and phones as manufacturers continue to fight to differentiate their products......how soon before we see the first 256GB or even 500GB phone or tablet and not at a ridiculous price point.
As soon as it happens all the other manufacturers will have to follow suit within one product life cycle.....it should be an interesting year.

I don't understand the App Store comments in full Windows device threads - we aren't in the walled garden here we are in the big city looking into the garden while shopping at everybody's superstore. You can run iTunes, blue stacks, most of steam and as someone mentioned above most of the Windows applications written in the last ten year and some beyond that if you need too. The App Store only exists for a sealed in Eco system to make people feel like they have lots of choice.
Not a fan of anybody's by the way - own an iPhone(unfortunately most of the time it does just work), an SP1 (though if I could find one of these might upgrade) and the missus has an iPad. Everything has its place but you can't compare full Windows (with all its attendant issues and annoyances) with a phone os on a big screen that's locked in to the manufacturers control.

Not sure what Windows forums you're on but most Apple users tend to keep to themselves, especially where Microsoft is concerned. I happen to be a fan of both Microsoft and Apple for different reasons. OS X is my main OS but at the same time I couldn't get by without Windows. My iPhone 6 is also my main phone but I'm also a big fan of how fluid Windows phone is on low power hardware, (just missing some apps that I require daily). I also use Android every now and then. I know people think Apple are overpriced but why can't people just enjoy the devices they prefer and get on with their lives without complaining or trying to justify their purchases...

They aren't directly comparable though. The Surface is like a "superset" of an iPad. I have both. The iPad is the throw under the bed and use it to consume device with mental long battery life (and it keeps it charge for months)
But for "work" or for serious personal stuff like document writing, or coding or PIM. Break out the SP and use a mouse and keyboard. At work, there is no comparison, and iPad would be daft. SP all the way.
Just keep your iPad, and get a SP as well. Best of both worlds :/

Thanks for replying. I think the MacBook Air is a fair comparison to have made, good points. I think I would prefer at that price, especially as it appears you have to buy an expensive keyboard for the Surface 3 separately, I would prefer something with a much better CPU and graphics solution, though I appreciate not everyone is a so-called 'power user' and needs that extra grunt, wants to edit video with a four core/eight thread next generation up i7 i7-6700HQ, or whatever the new Skylake CPU that supersedes that, or wants to play games on a gaming laptop, etc.
I can sort of see the appeal, though, and I appreciate it's a different market sector from a laptop anyway, smaller form factor. I think I will wait for a more powerful version for that ultimate convergence device! I am sure it won't be that price, though. Thanks.

I was struggling a bit to see the appeal of this over a laptop, the lack of connectivity, etc, and then I noticed that the CPU/GPU in the Surface three is now two generations old, though comparing it to a Skylake-based laptop probably isn’t fair and I am not going to vote cold because there is no reason to; I can’t find it cheaper and don’t know of a better priced alternative. What’s the appeal of a Surface 3, though, as against whatever alternatives? Thanks!
kingchris to Noclouds
28 Dec 15#74
Alternatives would really be ultrabooks, which are thin and weigh little with similar limits on connectivity. Microsoft always tried to pitch it against the Macbook Air.
They all share the same class of low voltage CPUs.
Possible reasons to pick a Surface over another ultrabook:
Weight. Its light compared to other ultrabooks.
Quality of display. Better then most on the market. Macbook Air is junk compared to the Surface Pro.
Quality of construction.
Touch screen with pen support.
You have to be prepared to pay extra to get something thin and light. You can always get a cheap laptop that is more powerful, but it won't have a nice screen or be tiny.

Big thanks to OP
Picked up one from the Culver Currys in Cardiff earlier. Tried first next door in PCWorld who had 3 in stock but the manager refused to sell them and said no other shop should either as Currys don't own Demo stock Microsoft do and they had a special version of Windows on them just for Demos.
Mine is like new, the seal looked like it had been opened but everything inside still in original packaging with no marks/finger prints, battery stats show its a new unused battery which is great. Had a few issues as first but eventually got it upgraded to Windows 10 and working great now. Also got the SP4 keyboard as had read it was better than the SP3 version.

Under £450 for an i5 Surface Pro 3 is an incredible deal. That's cheaper than some of the Atom-based Surface 3 models! The equivalent i5/128gb Surface Pro 4 will cost you an extra £400 - no way can that be justified for a 0.3-inch bigger screen and marginally faster real-world performance.
Don't forget, the new and much improved Pro 4 Type Cover also works perfectly with the Pro 3, narrowing the comparison even further.

It's that simple.

i call ms but the can't update warranty ?
Click here https://www.microsoft.com/surface/en-us/support/warranty-service-and-recovery/powercord give them your device code (on the back under the flap) and they will send you a brand new £64.99 power adapter. Or in my case, I had to exchange mine for another, so I am getting two...
Actually , I just checked it again and it may just be the AC cord. Ah well.

did you take the complete warranty and did you pay extra for this
It might be worth noting that this was one of the machines that had gone through 0 battery cycles so was 'as new'.
can you explain please

Both looked in good condition and I couldn't see any yellow colouring on screen but I wasn't in for too long. At least they can be inspected before you buy, I guess. Still a good price considering the new equivalent SP4 will set you back an extra £400.
1. Very limited stock
2. Very few stores have them
3. If they're demo, the screen will have been prodded 1000s of times by 1000s of people....
4. £450 aint cheap especially for a lightly used machine.
Also tried Loughborough today, and no surface pro 3s with that sku or the docking station sku at Loughborough or surrounding stores. (confused staff and unreliable stock control FTW)
hope that helps someone
Box has "not for sale - demo only" sticker on it.
I had to run it on my first unit but returned it due to the yellow screen issue, the second one was already reset and left at the Windows 8 setup screen - however just to be sure I ran the upgrade to 10 and set it to remove all files/don't keep any files.
The surface is good for students others maybe not ..
I have many for differing reasons.
Pc use - Surface Pro 3
Video editing - Macbook
Media consumption and apps - Ipad
Portable media consumption and Kodi - Sony Tablet Z3
Each hit the spot for different reasons
If I had to lose one, it would be the Ipad though as it's not used enough and of the thousands of apps, I only use about 20
The Surface is a completely different type of device that simply won't suit most people. It's equally superb for very different reasons.
Ps: writing this post on an iPad, while deciding whether to keep MacBook Air or get a surface.
Ipad is the most useless junk ever, why bother with a micky mouse ipad when you can get a convertible pc to do everything from productivity to gaming much better and without the ios restrictions?
Apple is for isheep only, end of story.
I picked it up and it had the pen too, plus 2 months of warranty...
Any advice on what you said to Microsoft to get them to add a full year?
4 in stock 1 was display she said
And the woman looked like I've just sexually assaulted her when I even suggested buying the display one....
The device is showing on my account but you cannot register Enterprise Surface Pro's on a Personal account, supposedly.
If it's £80 then it's a surface 3 dock, not the Pro.
Would be interesting if there was another sku. My box label does not have demo on it like the Surface tablets bought.
Kind of tempted to list it as a deal on its own as it's a great price.
I just picked one up on way home from my Gumtree purchase.
Charged Capacity 42,210 mWh
Designed Capacity 42,157 mWh
Battery Wear Level 98.01
Number of charge/discharge cycles 15
Purchased yesterday, also, got warranty extended by MS surface team (Ireland based) for 12 months and no yellow lines on screens, no pen included though but priced paid £420.00 plus stylus included (cheap); but looking to get pro 4 pen as apparenly an improved version, any suggestions on the new keyboard - is it worth the premium versus the older version 3 keyboard???
thanks - great bit of kit by the way for the price :stuck_out_tongue:
Designed Capacity 42,157 mWh
Battery Wear Level 100.1
Number of charge/discharge cycles 2
That's 1170 charges and still keeping 80% capacity. Of course it's hard to say for sure you exact lifetime.

I will live with that. Battery is good

Now check your Battery status with Batteryinfoview
http://www.nirsoft.net/utils/battery_information_view.html
Should give you all the info on the health of your Surface Pro 3's battery.
Now you can post your battery health levels on these demo units
Running Windows 10 update now, keyboard is totally unused sort of providing me with proof that the guy never used it (the back is still soft and not matted and the keys have no oil residue).
Going to stick my Surface 3 on ebay with its keyboard and hopefully get around the £450 mark so I could be in profit after my upgrade to the Pro.
Very good day overall.
Thought I would share the deal, right thing to do.
Sku - 115768
Mile End Road have one left now but has yellow banding one side and comes without a charger or pen.
Oh the price I paid covers the lack of warranty - £300 all in, inc Keyboard.
Happy days.
I am still stunned I got it for that kind of money. Happy as a pig in muck.
You get a 1 year guarantee on the items.
Also, if you want to save some cash on a keyboard - the original surface type cover works fine (I'm typing on it now) - it's a little smaller but fully functional and only looks wrong when it's closed up - which doesn't matter.
2) stock is plentiful
3) well done you
It would still be cheaper than brand new and Microsofts returns are meant to be quite good, it would be £659 although for around a £100 more you can get an entry level Surface 4.
Taking mine back now. Shame as it's in really rather good condition. £449 starts to look like a lot of money when you factor in the various concerns here though.
This is the one I've been using for almost a year; good protection.
Will Microsoft fix it for free , let us know what do they say
So as you need to have the Surface Pro 3 connected to the internet to activate windows, all Demo units will be just about out of warranty, if not already.
You will only be lucky if you have a totally sealed unit.
Spoke to a 3rd guy who said he'd sold one that morning and there was one left - he sold it me (i think the manager wanted it for himself).
However. . The demo software was still on it and password locked so waiting to get the unlock password.
Fun fun fun
I also picked up the SP3 dock for £49.97. All clearance stock.
You should select the Reset option then factory settings.
I asked in Currys Kingston park, They had 2 - one on display and one was boxed but used so I turned it down.
PC world Kingston Park have 3 and Silverlink have 4 in stock on that sku
If they sell them to you is a different matter - so is the condition.
Or you can force an upgrade quicker here: https://www.microsoft.com/en-gb/software-download/windows10
My advice is to drop in when your passing , next time they do a stock check they will probably find them and put them on clearance
for 724.00£
in uk the price would be around £767.00
i also did quidco which kind of tracked the sale at around £29.00
so hopefully i would have got a brand new surface 4 pro for just under 700£
(i5 and 128gb)
Or so they said... suspect the staff decided to have them, as they were very surprised at the price.
Said they would give me a call when they found them. Surprise surprise, 7hrs later and I haven't had a call.
The trend is about £520 on ebay, looks like you will be stuck with that, selling it at that price.
Not really at a price for ebay sharks as after ebay fees you will just about break even at the currys buying price.
The M3 one has a smaller integrated charger with the plug built in.
;-(
The other had a distinct curve along the top edge, looking like it had been flexed. Decided not to risk it, as I'm kind of 'on the spectrum' when it comes to things being 'right'. If anyone fancies their chances with a slightly curved one, it's in Ayr.
Nevermind I called them they are sold out of these in both Plymouth stores now. Oh well.
- Hayes have only demo units, none for sale.
- Northolt have 5 all ex demo without pens.
- Brentford have as many as 5 all ex demo without pens.
Was offered £10 off for missing pens, CeX sell them for £20.
Happy hunting.
does that mean that they are all gone .....
wanted one of these for a while now i5 being cheaper is just one of the perks.
Cheers OP, great find for me (fingers crossed)!
Is it classed as a new product with Microsoft?
Could ease my worries over the battery.
Just bought this at Currys Cardiff (Culver store )
Says demo on box ,but mine was brand new from store room, one brand new one left
Sku no 113598 .Check your local store there a few about
[/quote]
remove incorrect link
At this price an amazing deal..
They have 2 in stock
Confirmed this price is for the ex demos
Pc World Kingston Park have 3 and Silverlink have 4 as they checked on system
The label on the device says Demo so that is the sku number.
I walked away as it's a lot of money for a ex demo device which may have seen better days.
I am sticking to my surface 3 for the moment
Might keep the iPad but get this to replace the MacBook. Any thoughts on whether it's a stupid idea?
Buying a second hand surface pro 3, that's been looked after - probably suggests it'll be fine for many a year if it's still working. Touch wood - I've never had a tech product fail on me.
Here's an example
It's just keeping a look out. Deals like that are few and far between - but it's not really hard to come by them in and around the currys figure. Few currently active with best offers.
Then you get the standard people, who look for a deal just to sell it on. Shame on you - I see he was fleeced into an upsell product too, ha.
A trickle charge for a year is better than hundreds of power cycles in real world usage too.
You need to ask at the desk using the stock code - the two in Chichester were not on display.
Once the battery dies a repair through Microsoft is about £400 plus.
It's not a easy part to replace and no cheap battery replacement like apple.
Look in good nic for ex demo, boxed with all the bits.
But if comparing to an iPad then it depends if you like Windows or iOS.
Applications or Apps.
Producing vs consuming content.
If these are ex demo, the battery will be already past its best and its non changeable (for most non techs) so the device will be dead sooner than it should.
Would rather risk a eBay purchase than being buy DSG's ex demo stock
This is a great device, if you get the chance, buy the SP4's keyboard over the SP3's as its much, uses spaces keys and it is more hard wearing.
But for "work" or for serious personal stuff like document writing, or coding or PIM. Break out the SP and use a mouse and keyboard. At work, there is no comparison, and iPad would be daft. SP all the way.
Just keep your iPad, and get a SP as well. Best of both worlds :/
I can sort of see the appeal, though, and I appreciate it's a different market sector from a laptop anyway, smaller form factor. I think I will wait for a more powerful version for that ultimate convergence device! I am sure it won't be that price, though. Thanks.
The surface seemed clumsy to me, the "app store" was a joke. The whole thing just felt cheap in comparison to the materials of an iOSX device.
Im no Apple fanboy either.
The battery life and lack of fan are major pluses for the Surface 3.
worst port ever due to its weakness.
A very cheap adapter or cable will convert to HDMI.
For using it as a laptop it is not powerful enough, has tiny screen , keyboard and mouse bit of a joke. only one usb, no hdmi. I am sure you will be using it with keyboard so why not to buy a normal laptop.
Also in the future you can not replace its ssd or add extra ram 4gb.
REALLY ??????????
I've also noticed the screen, yellow line right down the left of the screen. Shocking.
I love MS hardware and Windows 10 is da dope!
John
They are kept in the store room
buy the NEW surface pro type cover 4 - for around £100
buy the NEW surface pro pen for around £50
if you know a student you prob get above prices direct from ms store + quidco
the new pro is 30 percent faster (but thats pretty much expected with each intel chip update) but the surface pro 3 is no slouch, it will still get stuff done
the surface pro 4 has better screen, more screen estate, lighter, slimmer...
but similar battery life, ive read the pro 3 has better battery life
the great thing about surface pro 3 is the new accessories fit perfectly.....
youtube - MICROSOFT CONFERENCE SURFACE PRO 4 reveal... some insight there
Great price for this Pro model, and hopefully Currys not too far from me has one.
Was tempted myself, but I put it back an hour ago.
(Sorry for all the brackets).
Those Itel atom based surface powered tablets are bloody overpriced for what they are.
...because it's a great price for a very nice piece of kit. Have some heat!
This was £849 when released
