The play:1 bundles are now £269 in store at Currys Digital as they are clearing stock.

This is in store only but should be nationwide dependant on stock levels, I got mine from Doncaster and they had 4 more packs on the shelf.

Hope this helps someone other then me :)

Can be had for £249 if you use o2 priority thanks to nicky_d00

I decided to pop in to my local Curry's/PC World (Guildford) last week on the off-chance that they might have a set as I was really keen to join the Sonos club but not at full price. Turns out they didn't have any in store, when i asked for them to check other stores they didn't know what to do until i gave them the product code. Eventually a quantity of 1 starter room kit in white was available in another store. Not only that, but the price was listed at £229.99. The guy in store seemed a bit sceptical that the computer system was right but he took my money and said if i'm lucky they'll turn up but I shouldn't get my hopes up (if the computer is wrong then i'll get a refund). They eventually arrived in Guildford on the friday and I apparently got the last set in the country (for Curry's/PC World). Needless to say i'm very chuffed and never expected such a bargain!

Gutted I've missed a lot of these start kit deals, I have a Play1 in the kitchen and was looking to expand. Now I finally have the money to buy a kit and they've all disappeared from "deal" prices. There's maybe one or two places that have them at £299. Does anyone know why these kits have dried up?

I have noticed the price of a single Play1 seems to be £155 now so, not much of a saving anyway on the kit (unless it's £269!!).

Can anyone explain how I might find this or has it finished? There seems nothing on the Curry's website, the 'Get Deal' at the top seems to just return a Sonos search on the Curry's site. I've been to my local store and they wern't aware of any deals on the Play 1. They were happy to help, but needed more informtion to find it. I have the potential of using my O2 voucher, which makes it better - If it's still on.

Thank you

I went in and asked, the guy found it on the computer system, it came up as PLAY1:PLAY1 or something to indicate the 2 speakers, he could then check stock in other shops, there were some in my region but not in my local stores.

He said these could be reserved online but as they aren't an item online this can't be done, so it might be worth just getting them to check stock and then driving down if there are more than 1, or possibly seeing if they can phone the store for you.

I paid for wireless streaming, great software, nice looking speakers and a mesh network that my android phone connects to and gets full signal wherever I am in my house.

Enjoy your celing mounted speakers though , I'm sure that took no effort at all to put holes into your ceiling.

Lol .... See what I mean about the sonos bots! The back end is in a cupboard, you don't even know there's a music system in my entire house. No wires, no plugs on show.
You, like me, bought a budget speaker system....only difference is you paid a high price.

I'll stick with Sonos thanks

Picked up a set in ealing Curry's yesterday and another in alperton. Alperton still have two sets left in white. In both stores had to ask as not on display, staff weren't aware of the offer but in both stores very helpful especially as the barcode wasn't scanning in either store so they had to do a manual search on their system

Picked up the last pair in Littlehampton this morning. Thanks! If anyone is in the Farnborough area, they still have stock there apparently (as of 1000 this morning when I asked the Chichester branch to check).

te]Yeah, its pretty solid. You can bind speakers into groups with the app or bind the whole lot for the whole house. By doing this, the music is synchronized perfectly. Or you can use them completely individually, something I don't think you can do if using connect:AMP? IE I could have 4 devices streaming different audio to all rooms individually at the same time or any combination of that. They also act as repeaters if you want them to.
I'm pretty sure Sonos can do it, or at least you can with the connect (I have one hooked up to a turntable) and I wouldn't imagine the amp unit was any different. One thing competing systems couldn't do (at least when I looked) would be to do something like this:
Zone 1 - Streamed radio
Zone 2 - Spotify playlist 1
Zone 3 - Spotify playlist 2
A zone can be 1 or more speakers of course, grouped in the app and using a single Spotify premium account. This is something we do in the house a lot.
Love the idea of more control on the unit, wish Sonos had that instead of just play/pause/volume. WiFi socketry sounds like a pain though, can you automate those with IFTT or the like?
I have a cheap wifi socket off the bay for £10 which is ok. Apparently Hive are about to release wireless sockets and lights for that. Will save me having too many apps.

From manufacturer:
WiFi Wireless Audio Music Receiver that supports iOS AirPlay, DLNA & UPnP protocols. Spotify Connect fully compatible. It connects to a traditional HiFis, Speakers or sound systems and converts them into a wireless system. This receiveris the ONLY device currently available that will allow you to stream fully synchronised audio to multiple receivers from all audio sources including Spotify, Pandora, BBC iPlayer, TuneIn, YouTube etc
• This is the ONLY receiver to allow you stream audio from Spotify, Pandora, TuneIn & iHeartRadio on ANDROID devices. No other audio receiver currently available allows this. Stream from both locally stored audio and cloud services on both Apple & Android. You do not need an internet connection to stream locally stored music. Each receiver will even act as WiFi repeater expanding the range of your home WiFi network.---------------------------------------- The receiver features physical touch buttons. Simply tap the Play button on the top of the receiver to resume the most recently played album, playlist or station. Tap the Pause button to quickly stop the music. Skip tracks forward & back through albums and playlists without having to use your phone! No more fiddly menus, browsers, IP addresses and searching for WiFi networks.----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- The receiver features a LAN (Ethernet) connection. The receiver can be connected to your home router or network simply via cable and will be fully integrated into your home network instantly. The receiver will be accessible to any devices on your home network whether wired or via WiFi. ------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------ Modern design. The receiver is designed to look as inconspicuous as possible to not look out of place in your now. No more ugly plastic devices!
• The receiver is fully Apple AirPlay, DLNA & UPnP compatible. You can stream audio to the receiver from all Apple Devices, (iPhone, iPad, iMac, iPod etc). All Android devices and Apps (AirFoil, AirShare, BubbleUPnP, iMediaShare etc). Windows PCs and Laptops. NAS Drives and network connected devices.-------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

The highlighted bit is a good feature, with no phone in sight or even on, it will resume music you played weeks ago, even if its been off since. So if you don't have your phone to hand, you just play on one of the digifunks and it re-establishes the stream to Spotify itself.

Only thing I wasn't happy about with the setup I went for was that if left on, you have 8 devices powered on, and 8 speakers. So what I did was put a wifi socket on so I can switch em off and on remotely.
monty77
26 Jan 16 #43
Nice setup! Is it solid? One reason I ditched AirPlay was because it was too unstable. Also can it do true multi-zone? e.g. radio in one room, spotify playing different stuff in 2 others? Not trying to pick holes but wondered if it truly did mirror Sonos functionality. Flexible choice of speakers is very nice to have and the Sonos pricing on connect and connect amp boxes is outrageous.

As for the payroll comment of course they are! Just like for pretty much every product from a firm with a marketing budget :-)

24 Jan 16 #10
Do these need to have a Ethernet cable attached or can they work off Wi-Fi? I've been looking at these for a while but am a bit wary as they do not offer Bluetooth. Also can I ask can you get the sound from your TV to come through these?

Cheers.
Jai88 to BeerGoggles
24 Jan 16 #12
No need for Ethernet as it can run via wifi. To get tv sound through these I believe you need the playbar which connects via optical cable and connect to the play-1's for surround sound.... (There is probably some fancy way of getting around this...) The play-1's are suitable for music streaming services  e.g Spotify

24 Jan 16 #13
No sound from your TV with these. You need a Playbar or Play:5 for that (I know you can also do it with the connect line of products but the lag is unbearable)
GSXR1000_Steve to BeerGoggles
25 Jan 16 #39
yes, they work on wireless, however if you want to add a Sub or Surround speakers then you will need a bridge (obsolete) or boost. The Playbar connects to the TV, but make sure the TV outputs 5.1 from the digital optical as most only send out 5.1 from digital freeview, i connect mine direct to the skybox, and when I want to use a DVD player you can either move the cable or use a splitter. this way its 5.1 if the programme is outputting in 5.1.

i bought a Sonos Play 1, and could not get it working at all. I then phoned Sonos support and the guy got it working for me but not before going through a lot of settings and other stuff on my PC.
Great I thought, now I can use it...wrong!!!
The next day I tried it another room and nothing as the app on both my phoner and tablet could not find it. I then loaded up the sonos desktop program, and that did actually find the speaker. I started to play a music track to the speaker and nothing, no sound at all.
I am just going to stick with my £78 cheapo wireless speakers that play anywhere inside or even outside.

As for the Play 1 speaker, it's going back.

Maybe you had a faulty one? Can't blame the whole product on your single experience.

I don't have a Sonos system, so cannot vouch for it, but I am in the IT world and thus technical.

Why don't you ask for a replacement and see if that experience is still the same?

This would be the same as buying a brand new Samsung TV for instance and the wireless not working on it, would you say every single Samsung TV is faulty?......

Order a replacement, then see how you feel

Good luck

I'm sure Sonos have magazines on payroll. If you ring richer sounds to ask what they recommend for lunch, they will tell you that you need sonos. It really isn't that good for the money (my opinion). There are a lot of people trying to defend it, because they want to justify the huge amount they spent. They usually don't allow anyone else to have a view, but after I looked into it for a long while, heres pictures of what I ended up with.

Digifunk 3 wireless media streaming devices. £39.99 each. You can connect to them wirelessly with anything including Spotify connect, which is what I use. You then connect these to any speaker or hifi that you wish to access wirelessly.

LEPY 2024a Amplifier £17.99 each. You will only need this part if you are using passive speakers like I am.

Eaudio 120W Ceiling speakers £19.99 / pair
http://www.amazon.co.uk/E-Audio-Ceiling-Speaker-Offset-Tweeters/dp/B003S8KKRY/ref=sr_1_1?s=electronics&ie=UTF8&qid=1453717427&sr=1-1&keywords=ceiling+speaker

All in all I paid about £330 with all the cables to have my entire house on wireless audio from my phone, pc or tablet. I was advised by everyone that sonos was the only way to do what I was trying to do and they were wrong.

A great side effect of using Sonos is you can use them as wifi access points - so I can connect to wifi via my bedroom Play 1 where my house wifi wont reach and is more reliable than using extenders. You just need to install the Sonos client on the device and enable access to Sonosnet. Certainly works for Android devices though I dont think IOS devices can do this. In the living room I have plugged in both TV and NOW TV box to the Playbar ethernet ports to get a reliable connection back to the router and out to internet!

25 Jan 16 #28
..they work well, they're simple to use and they're well supported - a very established product. Sound wise the 1s are pretty decent (be sure to tweak the EQ buried in room settings which a ton of people miss). You can't really compare these to BT based ones as BT falls apart the moment you want to do anything remotely fancy with multiple zones. At this price they're worth every penny.

I've never rated them for TV/movie use but that's just me, I think the soundbar/sub and requirement of extra play speakers for other channels makes them poor value for money - I have a dedicated setup for that personally.

Can someone explain to a novice like myself the Sonos verses Bose, I don't know which to buy and I want it for tv surround sound as well TIA
cava83
25 Jan 16 #26
What would be a better product then? By the sounds of it (no pun intended) its simply that they're moving to an individual package arrangement only. I used to have a nice arcam setup but can't be bothered with all the cabling anymore and additionally, ease of use is key (female use mainly)

Thanks

nice! I got this bundle for my parents last Christmas. It's a must have in my opinion. Set up is so easy, no ethernet needed (all wireless) control from any computer, phone etc - set up profiles e.g. one speaker in kitchen another in hallway... and the sound quality is well above average I have a lot of expensive audio equipment and these are very good.

If you have a Tesco nearby and can take advantage of the Curry's and O2 deal it would be worth getting £250 of Currys gift cards as that will bag you £7.50 worth of Clubcard points that you may be able to convert into £30 on some Clubcard redemption deals.

I'm going to disagree unfortunately. I'm a massive Sonos fan and have it kitted out throughout my house. 2 x Play 1 IMO lacks the bass and can sound a bit soulless in a big room. The single Play 5 (especially the new one) is so much better.

I think if you go 2 x Play 1 with a sub, the separation will come into its own but without it, then the Play 5 wins it.
