I still get a little excited when I see these little gems reduced. I already own SWOS and Cannon Fodder on GoG. I think it's time to pick up CF2 for the collection.

They have been slightly cheaper in the past, but I ain't slapping a decrease in value over 20p :)

I played a lot of consoles and computers in my youth, as had one or two consoles myself and played other families/friends systems. So not even sure what version of SS I played and on what system. I have a hunch though it was the Sega Mega Drive (16-bit console) version of SS that had the changed players names though./quote]

It most certainly was, go to around 1:10 in this video on youtube, the megadrive version and then laugh at the England player names.

Just simply A and B

The Competition Pro is available in USB and is perfectly adequate to the task.

However, the Zip Stik was where it was at.

I actually have a modified Zip Stik with USB internals, specifically because Sensi.

It's not terribly difficult to do - the internals of the USB Competition Pros are very nearly compatible.

I loved Sensible soccer, there was noting better than playing it on an Amiga, destroying many quickshot joysticks. Also being able to lob in a shot and score from the half way line made you feel like a football master.

Not sure if I can post this here, but you can play this and thousands of other old games on-line here: SENSIBLE

It is a legitimate site I believe:

All the games that are on Play DOS Games Online are what are called Abandonware, these software titles are from the 80’s and 90’s, site such as this one seek to conserve the games as many of these games have been completely lost in their original for that being on 3.5in floppy and 5.25in floppy disks.

PS: WARNING - POTENTIAL LOSS OF THOUSANDS OF YOUR HOURS!!

I had every edition on the Amiga and not one had false names from my recollection. Others have said the same, so I can't see it being my memory.

There was a PC version that came out in 98 (?) and I'm sure that had altered names though.
dreamager
8 Jan 16 #48
I only ever played it on Amiga, and whichever version that was had Ryan Goggs, so wasn't just consoles
xenophon
8 Jan 16 #47
Oops, seems I joined the party late. But confirming that SS and SWOS on the Amiga had correct names.

And how anyone could play it on the Competition Pro or similar I don't know. Hated playing on that thing. Always preferred a Quickshot 2 type joystick myself. Edit: a joystick with a trigger button basically.

8 Jan 16 1 #18
Sensible Soccer was fun. Isn't that the game where they were cheap and didn't pay the licensing to get the players names? So Steve Bruce would have been Steve Bryce and so on, they just changed a letter here or there as I recall.

Cannon Fodder is simple and great fun to play, quality game to.

Heat for the brief but smile on face nostalgia trip I just went on momentarily

Not on the Amiga they didn't. All the names were correct. Those poor deluded fools who played it on the Megadrive I think had the names changed.

8 Jan 16 #45
Amiga version was before clubs realised they could make a fortune oit of licensing player names. I think it helped that the first version weren't sold in the same quantities as console games.

The Competition Pro was my joystick of choice as well, over the Zip Stick.

All the more reasons to keep your CRT TV's for that extra nostalgic gameplay too. Seen too may been thrown away at dump sites that still works as gaming monitors. Can't watch TV, just get a cheap Freeview decoder. I'll be keeping my Sony Trinitron TV's for retro gaming alone.

Sensi Soccer always had real names from what I recall. Kick Off and Man Utd in Europe had fake names. That is where Ryan Goggs, Andrei Konchelskis and Denis Urwin and the like came from. I still have my Amiga 500 in working order, i'll have to fire it up to check now (not right now but sometime soon).

Read younggrobbo's comment above perhaps there is where the confusion lies...although why did they need licenses for the console version and not the computer versions...weird.

Certainly both the Sensible Soccer 92 European Champions Edition as well as the original and subsequent releases of SWOS on the Amiga all had real player names...as I still have an Amiga this is not just a fuzzled hazy memory either
noahsdad
8 Jan 16 #27
Must have been another SS game in the series then from that generation, I swear there was at least one with nearly the real players names but not quite. I am sure there was licensing back then, even Pre-Premiership times, was just a hell of a lot cheaper.

8 Jan 16 2 #26
The console versions of Sensi didn't, Amiga version did. SWOS took up so much of my life. I would play a whole season in one day.

The only way to play it, I have my A1200 a C64 and a Zipstik. Have both my C64, Amiga and desk PC all on an L shaped Computer Desk...if only I had room for more retro computers, an Atari 800xl would also be nice.
cicobuff
8 Jan 16 #24
Nope, SWOS had all the real players names, and I don't think licences were needed back then like todays money grabbing market with the likes of FIFA and PES.

Simpler times.

They are using dosbox, the game is a bit slower and less accurate. Also I forget this game is from 1993 not the 80's. The pc version in dos is actually better than the Amiga version, which didn't surprise me after I noticed the date.
