It's awesome when I go to a friends or my brothers house and can just plug in my HDD and play any digital game I own.
Who wouldn't want that as an option?.....

1. This new model works fine in a PS4 (9.5mm and correct connector) - I have one in mine.
2. The caddy in this new model is harder to open, I'd recommend a stanley knife run carefully around the join
3. It is possible to reuse the old 500GB HDD in this caddy if you're very careful.
4. It will invalidate the warranty on this HDD, but won't affect the PS4 warranty
5. It's been as low as £53 (possibly £49 on one occassion) but £60 is still decent

why would you want an external drive when you can have internal? who wants an extra box laying around.

Lot of these drives have special connections to the case so that would be no good. Tried this before with a seagate and the connection was not a standard connection
Edit
Just read on the Argos site it will work but once you take it out of the case their goes the warranty

This one is fine for a PS4 upgrade, I believe Eurogamer actually use this model in their upgrade guide.

A couple of reviewers have stated they installed in a PS4 with no issues.
Is this the exact same one or am I missing something? It seems the same and I prefer Amazon

Amazon says it's 3.5" that doesn't fit in a PS4

I bought this one a few month ago and after easily removing the case it works fine in my PS4. However I bought another just before Xmas and it was the newer model that has a metal case so I'd guess nowhere near as easy to open.

Does it void the warranty?
voyager123
29 Dec 15#14
Did some checking some say it does and others it doesn't, suppose it's luck of the draw and it depends on who you deal with. But all the external hard drives I had, have said taking the hard drive out of the case effects the warranty
BuzzDuraband
29 Dec 15#15
I think the reference against are towards the PlayStations warranty, it does of course void the warranty on the HDD.

Ah ok. So this might be handy for others but I just checked Prime Now and they have the 3Tb one for 70 quid. If like me and got a 10 quid off email recently because it's finally in Manchester it's 60 quid for 3TB same make I believe
Ag2014

That way you can have external and internal. So if you bought this you'd have 2.5tb (500gb internal and 2tb external) instead of just 2tb.

I don't think Seagate do a 3tb portable....you sure your not looking at the 3tb external 3.5" drive?

29 Dec 151#31
No. The link goes to a 3.5" desktop drive. Amazon have been selling the portable 2tb for less than £60 but are currently out of stock so it's only available from market place sellers at higher prices. Argos are currently cheapest, but it has been on sale for less than 59.99 (e.g. with £5 voucher after £50+ spend) and probably will be again.

29 Dec 15#32
Honestly I have no clue about these things. Am on mobile too so for some reason on this app I can't paste a link to a screenshot of it.
But as others have said below I've checked around and 3tb isn't recommended for ps4 anyway.

you can store movies on it but playback on your TV depends on the TV itself...firstly it needs a USB port, secondly it needs to support USB playback, thirdly it needs to support the audio and video codecs of the movie files

how can people still get confused with 2.5" and 3.5" drives??, nearly every sodding post looking back on 3.5" desktop & 2.5" drives you get "will this fit my PS3/PS4" comment for desktop drives and "will this fit my PC" on 2.5" drives.

2tb works fine, crack open plastic case and remove inner drive then install into PS4. Can be a bit of a pain finding and downloading the correct firmware update off the Sony site but it is there.
All works fine and a complete necessity with the ever expanding ps+ library.
Also doesn't void PS4 warranty as it's designed to have hard drive upgraded.

Well if you had another external USB drive you could have made a full backup of the old system using the PS4 and then restore that backup to the new internal drive once it is installed.

They do, but I think Argos have the photo of the drive wrong. Or they've updated the casing.

Doesn't void the ps4 warranty (the instructions are clearly displayed on the Sony website). I bought one earlier, unclipped the case (by jimmying a small screwdriver inside the case), swapped the drives and installed the update (download the firmware from the Sony site, stick it on a USB and bobs your uncle) and now have 2tb in my ps4 and a 500gb drive (from the ps4) as an external drive. If you have any questions about installation feel free to pm me!

I'm generally liable to screw up these supposedly 'easy' jobs, but managed to fit a 2TB drive into my PS4 today in around 10 minutes. Absolute piece of cake. Transfer your game saves to a USB stick, swap out the drives, reinstall the PS4 firmware (download this from Sony website) and then set about re-installing/downloading your games. That's the lengthy bit......

I installed this in my PS4 a couple months ago and it works great. It seems to load games noticeably faster than the old drive!
Word of advice if you don't want to scratch the case while dismantling it: use a flat head screwdriver instead of a knife (I learnt the hard way :stuck_out_tongue:) and start with one of the corners on the opposite side of the usb port. Just insert and twist, then move screwdriver along the seam to open up the rest.

Yeah, loads.
I have some theories, but I can't back them up. Did you notice the blue LED is not attached to the caddy, it's attached to the drive? Someone pointed that out to me when I wondered why the blue light didn't come on with the old drive in the caddy.
So it does have some hardware that a normal hard drive would not have attached to it. I am wondering if it has some kind of speaker built in to make the beeps. They don't sound mechanical.
My PS4 didn't make the beeps before and exactly the same type and brand of drive came out of it, was just 500GB and obviously not popped out of a portable enclosure. So I wonder if it was some sort of 'feature' the portable drive had.

I got this today for the sole purpose of upgrading my PS4. I got the version shown in the pictures from Argos, was pretty easy to pry it open with a thin flat head screw driver. I managed to reassemble the casing together and reuse the case with the old 500gb PS4 drive.
The drive inside the enclosure was a Samsung Spinpoint Momentus (I believe it is 5400rpm). The process of taking it apart and putting it in the PS4 took no longer than two hours (including backup and restore from the PS4 of save/user data).
One thing i'd recommend is to test the drive (just transfer a few files back and forth) before taking it apart. Last thing you want to worry about is a failed hard drive on arrival when you've already taken it apart.

Hi could someone who's already bought this drive from Argos in the past week confirm whether the version they're selling is the older portable version or the new 2016 version?
The picture on Argos shows what probably meant to be the new 2016 version, but the EAN in the specifics related to the older model!

those wanting to use their old drive in the casing, you need to right mouse click on my computer, then on manage, then storage.
Youll see a drive with a few partitions, right mouse click one by one and option to delete once its all as one black line and all together right mouse click again amd create new volume drive.

Who wouldn't want that as an option?.....

My PS4 didn't make the beeps before and exactly the same type and brand of drive came out of it, was just 500GB and obviously not popped out of a portable enclosure. So I wonder if it was some sort of 'feature' the portable drive had.
this is normal price too. voted cold.
Got the old 500gb working as an external drive in yhe case no problem, you have to delete all the partitions from it then create a new full partition then you are good to go
Was it a flathead screwdriver? I am yet to try and open the Seagate external drive.
NOTE:
I bought this hard drive from Argos as well and the model number at the bottom of box says STEA2000400
UPDATE
i opened the case using a knife, I can confirm the drive inside is a Samsung "spinpoint" momentus hard drive. The model number of this Samsung hard drive is ST2000LM003.
Do I have to do something with it, or have I not been careful enough, and broken something?
Cancel that. After a bit of googling and fiddling with disc management, I've got the disc formatting. Fingers crossed!
Thanks,
Basically went to Control Panel - Admin tools - Computer management - Disk management
Deleted all the partitions on the drive (make sure you get the right one) and formatted it.
This was in Vista BTW. No doubt it's hidden somewhere else in later versions. Damn you Microsoft!
The picture on Argos shows what probably meant to be the new 2016 version, but the EAN in the specifics related to the older model!
(I would be buying it purely as an external drive for my laptop, so I care about how it looks and the casing size, etc.)
Many thanks!

Youll see a drive with a few partitions, right mouse click one by one and option to delete once its all as one black line and all together right mouse click again amd create new volume drive.
