Can people please stop posting SSD deals, I've done my work Mac mini, my MacBook, my home Windows PC and now am tempted with this for my sons laptop - he won't notice the difference but I want to do it because I know I can, you are costing me a fortune!!

Fantastic deal, although might be worth spending the extra £30 and getting the Samsung 500GB EVO if you plan to use this on a Mac.

True, I'm just floating my only experience of BT Shop. It's hardly inspiring when they can't get your first order right.
I had to chase BT Shop for updates, and only after lots of pestering did they acknowledge they didn't have stock, however they told me they had stock arriving. It never did and after a month I had to use PayPal to get my money returned to me.
I've had p!$$ poor first experience with banggood.com too. I'm not against giving them another go, but I would look elsewhere first and if I wanted something in a hurry, their offer would have to be VERY good indeed for me to bite over say...Amazon; Never had a problem they did not resolve well.

BT Shop will take you order, not have stock, not get in new stock , only after 60 days cancel your order, and all while their website claims to have stock.

I've never had a bad experience with them in the past. Always gonna get poor experiences everywhere though.

I'm not sure how much faster the Ultra II is compared to this, but the speed of the U2 is blistering now I have set up my Raid 0

God it boils my **** when people start buying kit on benchmarks.
This is way fast enough for almost anyone, unless you have a VERY VERY specific requirement which is based on random access.
Sod the EVO, just buy this unless you want to spend more money on bragging rights.

£/GB - this was a much better deal
and this is the Ultra II. Very impressive drive and blisteringly fast in a RAID 0 setup
My crystal ball says Amazon will reduce to this price again.

Any mention of BT/Shop DABS makes this cold as Ice.
Looks a little bit more at dabs with £4.50 standard delivery.

In which case a traditional consumer grade 7200rpm HDD would probably have died at the same point.

At the point it is entirely up to the buyer's preferences. Do they want that extra write data or do they want faster read/write performance - though I do not see any difference in speed when doing daily tasks.
Personally, I would just go for the faster drive, I guess that's why everyone seems to recommend the 850 EVO, that and Samsung's warranty but any defective drive should fail in the first year anyway.

Thanks for posting, voted hot
Just a question regarding capacity, According to Sandisk website the Plus is only available in 120gb or 240gb? And this is 480gb?
Am confused?
haritori
11 Jan 16#32
No i agree, but if its well known that Sandisk give you a 25% increase over Samsung doesn't it make sense? saying that my samsung 830 is coming on for 3 years and its only at about 30TB.

I think this gets mention on any SSD thread, but the TLC vs MLC debate should not be of concern to the average computer user. A rough estimate is that you would need to write around 500GB per day for around 5 years to finally destroy a TLC based SSD - around 900TB lifetime.
Though that's just an estimate for earlier TLC based controllers, see here, I'm sure improvements have been made to get even a larger number of writes since then.
Therefore, the average computer user should not worry about which SSD to buy in terms of longevity but focusing mainly on price, performance and reliability. All in all, if you care about SSD writes you would not be looking at low to mid-tier SSDs in the first place.

Agreed, I would never use a mechanical drive for the OS again.

Think I remember seeing 75TB written for limited warranty on the Evo's. SSD always gonna be a huge step up from traditional. One of the best improvements that you can do IMO with noticeable speed difference, especially on older laptops.

I read somewhere that the EVO 500GB isnt the best SSD for longevity, and the Sandisks will last you longer. 100TB lifetime.

Hmm, good find. I've seen some much lower results. Then again, a lot of people shove SSDs in old laptops (prob no SATA3 even) and post those results. I stand corrected!

Hold your horses folks. As far as I know the Sandisk 'Plus' is very slow by today's standards of SSDs. Benchmarks and generic performance comparisons show massive difference between this and something like the 850 EVO. I know it's £30 more for the EVO so it's your choice.
I think i'd rather spend at least the £10 more on the Ultra II posted the other day (http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/sandisk-ultra-ii-480gb-ssd-89-99-saveeasyonline-ebay-2369696).
I've not voted hot or cold, but from what I can see, this should really be much cheaper anyway.

From reviews I've seen on a quick search this drive looks respectable especially at price point.
There are other guides that also have windows as bootcamp - not that easy with adding windows, but do-able.

My mac has a normal hard drive and is really really slow. If I buy this ssd and the Inatek, how do I connect them (is it USB) and how do I transfer the operating system to make it boot from ssd?

why swap out my 120gb SSD, only using about 50% for boot drive?
evolution07 to Bunnster
11 Jan 16#14
Would give you faster performance and room for additional apps. If only using 50% currently then you would be fine. No need to use SSD for Pics, vids, and docs. SSD's are better suited to data intensive retrieval and storage where speed is key. Things like video editing, large databases, or gaming etc.

genuine question. what advantage would the Samsung have on a Mac? looking to boot Mac mini from an external ssd drive.

11 Jan 16#13
No major benefit other than slightly faster potential top end speeds for read/write. Sandisk has a higher MTBF @ 1.75 million hours opposed 1.5 million hours. higher capacity. Not worth extra £30 IMO though.

great deal. Heat to OP.
Would this be a good drive to replace my second HDD in my laptop, which is currenlty 320gb, i.e. to store all my application data (I have a 120gb one of these as the boot drive)? I only store pic, vids and microsoft office documents etc. I don't play games on my laptop.

I'd be more tempted to swap out the 120gb and clone to this. keep 320gb as storage. Then put 120gb into Inateck 2.5 enclosure with UASP: Inateck
Using this I commonly achieve speeds in excess of 500MB/s on my Macbook air using USB3.0 with samsung Evo's. I boot my iMac from it rather than internal traditional drive.
