I've had one - bought it before xmas but sold it after a couple of weeks.
I sold it for various reasons which are just my opinion but nonetheless may help other make a decision...
1. pixels - it's noticeable - it's not going to ruin the experience but it's there - this is what's known as the "screen door effect" (or part of it)
2. comfort - No matter what I did, I could not get the headset to be comfortable for more than maybe 20minutes and in that time I'm pretty sure I was altering here and there
3. fogging - unfortunately it fogs due to temperature difference and moisture from your face. You can try pre-heating the lenses slightly with a hair-dryer or not leaving it in a cold room but for the money it's still another issue that just get's in the way of it being immersive.
4. nausea - I may just be one of those that is prone to feeling the effects but I found certain cames left me feeling ill (Temple Run in particular)
5. Field Of View (FOV) - it's not wide enough. It's almost as wide as the Oculus Rift I believe but this still leaves you with the feeling as though you're viewing everything through a ski mask - great for diving simulator games but not brilliant for everything.
6. cost - while I was happy to pay the money, after some time I realised that I was not happy with the experience vs the cost. It's a great bit of kit but with the above issues it wasn't really worth the £80 (especially with Christmas in the way!)
I was running the Gear VR using a Samsung S6 32GB.
I watched (or tried to watch) both 2D and 3D movies in the cinema, played various games and also watched YouTube and used the browser.
I hope this helps - again, just my personal opinion.

Because there are bitter pr*cks who will vote cold because:
a) They can't afford the headset (even though it's dirt cheap for the industry)
b) They can't afford a S6+ Samsung phone
c) They assume a 99p Google Cardboard has the same functionality
d) They hate John Lewis

been playing with for about a week now. You're going to be blown away with the demos on this thing but left scratching your head about what to do next with this. I suggest downloading the Netflix app.
Also, you can watch your own 3D movies on this by creating some folders in your phone. Inside of the 'Oculus' folder create a folder titled 'Movies' and inside of this create another folder labeled '3D' You'll be able to watch any 3D mp4 files that you have through the Oculus theatre.
Overall, it's a great device, definitely worth the investment if you've got the relevant phone.

I'm really considering getting it now because of what you mentioned about the 3d movie stuff. Is mp4 the only filetype supported, by the way? And silly question but is the 3d comparable to the sort of depth effect you get at the cinema (non-IMAX of course)? Thanks.

Genuine question: a friend showed me his new vr headset (basically a holder for a phone) worth £20. What features does this Samsung set have over things like Google cardboard?
draper3000 to rohitmkiller
6 Jan 16#33
Theres loads of info about this and other headsets on sites like 'road to vr'.
essentially it has far better lenses, and some of the processing is done on board which links with the phone models listed to reduce the latency (lag). Which is the delay in updating the image in real time as you move to the point that you don't notice it.. with out any or at least far far less stuttering than you'd get from a cheaper £20.00 option or Google cardboard.
essentially it can update the image quickly enough to make for a sickness free (or reduced sickness) vr experience.
what you don't get is the full vr experience where you can lean forward and move around inside a space like with the new oculus rift (available for preorder since this afternoon) or the equally good looking HTC Vive.

This is Samsung's first consumer edition of VR and unless it proves to be a complete flop it won't be their last. You only have to look at this website to see that the s6 in all its forms is a hugely popular handset. Sure they might make a gear VR exclusive to the S7. But the software will continue to be updated regardless. And even if you are right, I can still watch star wars on the moon in 3D when it's released.

The only issue I have is that I'm worried 32GB might not be enough? Could anyone who has this comment on that, 23GB after the OS and other junk doesn't leave much room. It's either the S6 Edge Plus 32GB or S6 Edge 64GB.

I have the s6 edge. Worst decision I ever made was picking that over the basic s6. It costs more and is so much more inconvenient. I'm constantly scared of dropping it and it's impossible to pick up easily. It also occasionally registers a hold as a touch event and actual touch events stop working.
It's the only time in my life I've paid extra for form over function and I regret it totally!

They had these at Bluewater and I had a go, it was a 3d tour of Singapore. While it worked well as a toy but I couldn't use it seriously, the resolution was just too low and I could see the individual pixels and the gaps between them very prominently, it soon became all I could focus on and rather annoying

Once I played the demo, yes just a demo with a few levels of Tactera, I was hooked, I have literally never played or seen anything like it. It has totally blown my mind. WOW just WOW, and if they make a full game out of it, then I'm sold on VR. No 2D game comes close to that, just seriously do yourself a favour if you have this headset then download Tactera. I'm not speechless but I should be, I can't describe just how much that's gaming Nirvana. I must be dreaming, it was that impressive.

Can you read? This site is HotUKDeals. DEALS. Not HotUKProducts. We aren't rating the product (although people like you might), we are rating the price relative to its RRP. In that regard, this is definitely deal. Cheaper than buying direct from Samsung (cashback is not guaranteed) and you get 2 year warranty with John Lewis. Plus, I believe John Lewis has stock available, while there's a wait with Samsung.

I disagree. You haven't used one if you think that. The Samsung Gear VR is the best thing I've bought for years, literally years. I can't last remember buying something so staggeringly good, I took it to a friend's place yesterday and they all tried it and were amazed by it. It's groundbreaking.
You'll think again if you try :
Smash Hit - Throwing balls at crystal objects as you move through a block like architectural landscape. It's indescribable, you have to try it. The part on level 5 as you enter a tunnel and the scenery rotates as you move through it, the motion you feel, quite incredible. Could well make some people feel sick. The game is fantastic though and the the audio adds so much to the immersion.
Sisters: A short horror story that even when you know what will happen still scares the crap out of you!
Dreadhalls: The feeling of actually existing inside the castle/dungeon and the feeling that you're going to meet something nasty, is quite unsettling.
Jurrasic Park Apatosaurus: Just watching a CGI dinosaur get up and move up to you, amazing.
Battle of Avengers Tower: A non interactive VR experience, quite incredible and jaw dropping.
and that's just games, the fact you can be in a movie, such as a plane taking off and flying and really absolutely feeling like you're there, the VR experience is like nothing I've experienced before, if you have an S6, get this, it's a no brainer and try the games/apps I've outlined in this post.
Tactera: A holographic tabletop game within a futuristic room whereby you can command units to attack enemy units. As a playable demo it's quite amazing.
Also I never paid for any of the above, so far I've worked with using demos and
I was like others skeptical of VR until I tried it, but this is truly awesome stuff. The worst part about the experience is the overheating of the phone and the battery life of the phone. Meaning you can only realistically get 30-40 minutes out of the unit and probably in bursts of 10-15 mins at a time.
As I said the best thing I've bought for years and possibly ever. I'm a total convert to VR now, I can't see anyway this tech can fail.

Hmmm...Old tech/stock? ...that was only launched as a consumer product on November 20th. That Oculus themselves recently added to their own website and have been discussing ongoing development and support for in recent interviews.
