Just popped in Sainsbury's, Hadleigh Rd Ipswich and their own brand Saffron was £1, also all of the others were that price, needless to say I purchased th last 4 jars.
Wonder if this is something to do with packaging update or something as this Saffron is never much cheaper than £3.95
At this price it's half of what I pay when visiting Spain!!
Might be worth checking all Sainsbury's!

They're all £1 usually. The Saffron isn't great, quality matches the price. You can't get decent Saffron without paying a good price for it nowadays it seems.

Yes. You need Crocus sativa (or Crocus sativus), rather than your common or garden crocus species. Just plant the corms and you'll be away. Harvest the stigmas from the flowers and you can start cooking.

Go into any Asian supermarket (Such as Birmingham's PAK supermarkets) and as for Safron and they will have it behind the counter at a fraction of this price.

Yep Asian supermarkets are the way to go. Try Jalpur Millers. Instore prices are cheaper than online.

As per earlier post , crocus,s , it is how Saffron Walden got its name, they used to grow the stuff many moons ago.
