It is a project, but there are tutorials out there, I'm very basic in programming, but there is lots of pre-written code on the likes of git hub, if it's something you enjoy doing, it's not wasting time. The stuff you make yourself is bespoke as you are addressing the issues that are important to you, and as you made it, you can add to it. When buying off the shelf, you're stuck with it's limitations.

It is the governments problem about corporation tax but there is nothing the UK government can do as they are not a UK company.
They pay the tax required by law. Would you volunteer and pay extra money to the goverment if you didn't have to?
