I've heard this version has a different soundtrack (that's worse?) and some other tidbits. Is it worth getting again on ps4?

It's got the original soundtrack as an option. I heard the random encounter stuff is removed and it's all premeditated... I have it on ps3 but am tempted to upgrade

Great price! Think I paid more for the PS3 version, which I still haven't got around to playing. This just makes me wish I had a PS4. When XV and the VII remake are out I'll probably take the plunge and get this as well.

Has that been rumoured? Haven't heard anything about it, but it would be great. Was just looking at all the FF games on Steam this morning and thinking they could easily add the PSP versions of I & II and the PS4 version of X and X-2 and then, once IX has been released, there would only be XII left and then all the main numbered games would be available on PC! Not all the ports/remakes are great, admittedly, but being able to play them all on the same platform would be a first. XII is the only one that hasn't seen any kind of re-release on anything other than its original platform (PS2). I was also amazed that XI is still going, especially now that XIV is out, and that you still have to pay monthly for it!

The original is one of the best games ever. I've got this on ps3 and not even put the disc in and then also got it for ps4... Time to revisit it I think! But yeah loved both FFX and FFX-2. Why should you care? You shouldnt really... but its better than FFVII fact.

The remastered generation continues. This generation is a .5 gen. Will hurt developers eventually when less people buy games and wait for GOTY editions or the remake on the PS5/6 and so on...

This is why I usually stick with PC because the number us great indies producing brilliant games means you can reliably ignore remasters.

That said, this deal is some seriously good value for money. Looking at 100+ hours for two games (one which is excellent, and the other which is pretty good).

Can somebody tell me if this game is what one could consider 'grindy'? I tried XIII and it just annoyed me so use that as a reference point
Elivercury to Traldera
14 Jan 16 #51
I basically platinumed FFXIII* and did platinum FFX and I'd say that's a difficult one to answer.

I would not describe FFXIII it as a "grindy" game - given it actively limits you on how high a level you can get for the first 2/3rds of the game and I believe you should be able to beat the rest of the game with fairly modest amounts of levelling. That being said, while I wouldn't describe XIII as grindy, it certainly plodded for the first 11 chapters until it decided to get off the rails and become an actual final fantasy game instead of an irritating barrage of cutscenes and linear hallways.

So really I think it comes down to when you quit FFXIII:
If you got past chapter 11 without quitting, but then found the game too grindy then I'd perhaps stay away from FFX as there probably a fairly similar amount of what I would call "modest" grinding to allow you to beat the later bosses or obtain your ultimate weapons.

If you got fed up and quit before chapter 11 (as I did, before coming back and realising it gets quite good after), then I'd disregard FFXIII as a benchmark and give FFX a shot. FFX has much better pacing than FFXIII and has no caps on your levels/progression. All of the grinding challenges/super bosses are generally better tucked away than they are in FFXIII and can be very comfortably ignored if they are not something you're interested in.

I'd also note that the story for FFX is far less convoluted and confusing, while still complex enough to be rewarding. Seriously, wtf even happened in FFXIII. I tried FFXIII-2 but didn't manage 10 minutes.

*I must have missed one item somewhere as the one for collecting every item didn't pop and I didn't have the patience to grind out every item again for the final achievement. FML.
TinoCarlos
14 Jan 16 #43
[Very Mild Spoiler alert]

FFX is only as 'grindy' as you want it to be for the main story really. You can grind for the Dark Aeons / Monster Arena for a while if you want. I clocked up 120 + hours on the PS vita version and have given up on beating the ultimate super boss Penance as it would mean many more hours. At least with FFX you don't have to beat the main story to continue grinding for the super bosses unlike FF13
reddragon105
14 Jan 16 #44
Ah, interesting. That's as good as official then! (Unless something happens to make it get cancelled, which wouldn't be surprising with Squenix.) Wonder why there's a new listing for VI though? That's not the app ID of the version that's already on Steam.

Disagreed. Enhanced versions of games have been getting released for decades. Nothing new here except now there's obviously a bigger backlog of games and more effort is being put into the remasters, which is a good thing. And progress doesn't happen in huge leaps, it's continual. I don't think that affects sales because if everyone always waited for the next version no one would buy anything ever.

Whilst your point is valid and well made, quite often, these games are from a year or two ago. As a console comes to the end of its life, gradually people will realise that the later games (such as GTA V on PS3/360) will just be re-released on the next console when its out in less than a year.

I didn't bother with The Witcher 3 because an enhanced edition always follows. That won't be long in arriving after the GOTY awards. The danger is that if/when more people start to think like that, the initial figures will be poor, meaning that less funding is available for such things. Long term, that is a legitimate concern. It also stops/delays companies from developing new IPs, instead focusing on the tried and trusted game and just improving the graphics.

When the best games on a current console are the previous console's games, that speaks volumes.
reddragon105
14 Jan 16 2 #54
I think you might be combining two discussions there - there's a big difference between a GOTY Edition and a HD remake/remaster. I'm the sort of person who will wait for a GOTY Edition for any game that's going to have expansions or a lot of DLC, but personally I think that's because I've always got a huge backlog of games that I'm trying to work through and also because I'm a bit OCD about having to have every piece of DLC, whether I'll use it or not, so I like to see the dust settle before I jump in. That and the later you buy, the cheaper it will be. But the main reason I haven't bought The Witcher 3 is simply because I haven't played the first two games yet - have them, just haven't got round to them. If money was no object I wouldn't have said no to the game and a season pass on day one, because that's the same thing as a GOTY Edition in the end.
But HD remasters are another thing entirely. Some old games just aren't playable - both in the sense that people won't play them because they just don't play old games, but also because they just don't work on new systems. I guess the number of remasters has been on the rise for the last 10 years because we've now had two generations of consoles with terrible backwards compatibility and this is a good way to ensure that the best of previous generations is still accessible (and, yeah, sure, make a bit of money). And this isn't a remaster of a 1-2 year old game - FFX is 15(!) years old and X-2 is 13 - it's basically one remastered version released on the PS3 and the PS4, which is great because neither of those consoles play PS2 games so now these old games are accessible again, the PS4 version looks slightly nicer (I know the PS3 version gives you the choice of 720p with AA or 1080p without but the PS4 can do 1080p with AA, not sure if there are any other differences) but it being on PS3 as well means it's available to many more people. I don't think there's anyone who bought the PS3 version who wishes they waited for the PS4 version as they're so similar, and for those that do, you can just trade your PS3 version in for the PS4 one and copy your save game across.
moko84
14 Jan 16 #55
It was HD masters and re-releases in general. It won't be something that happens immediately, but over time... very possibly.
darkspace100
15 Jan 16 #56
That money they are investing in remasters should be spent on new games instead. It isn't free to remasters and it takes time and money to make them that are better spent on new games. Just look at how broken AAA games are nowadays and that money could be spent improving new games not old. If you want to play old games then keep your old console. Simple.
reddragon105
15 Jan 16 1 #57
Well I don't think that games should be released broken either, but there are enough games developers out there to work on both remasters and new games, and if those working on new games can't manage to finish a game before it's released, that's down to bad management on their part. It's usually down to time rather than money - studio pressure to put a game out before Christmas, say - but I don't see why another developer should come to their rescue. I mean this FFX/X-2 remaster was made by Square Enix, with the bulk of the work outsourced to Virtuos, a small Chinese company that seem to specialise in mobile versions of console games but also did Fable Anniversary, while at the same time Square Enix were developing Lightning Returns: Final Fantasy XIII, which wasn't released broken, and FF XIV: A Realm Reborn, which was a huge improvement on the original, and they've managed to make the Kingdom Hearts remasters all whilst working on FFXV, Kingdom Hearts III, World of Final Fantasy, Dragon Quest XI and now the FFVII remake. Compare that to Rocksteady, who worked on nothing but Arkham Knight for 4 years, and still managed to botch the PC version - I don't think that would have been avoided had Square Enix not spent money remastering Final Fantasy and Kingdom Hearts.

Also, it's not just a case of 'keep your old console to play old games' - what about people who never had the old console in the first place? Who didn't play the game when it was first released? Who weren't even born? Remasters are for those people too. I never had an N64 so I missed out on Zelda: Ocarina of Time and Majora's Mask and was very glad when they were ported to the GameCube. Likewise, I never had a SNES but I've played loads of SNES games now thanks to the Wii's Virtual Console. And, even though I have had a PS2 for 15 years (it's still set up under my TV) I actually did not own a copy of FFX until this remaster came out and I bought it for the PS3.
