heat for physical version that's pretty cheap. Quite a fun title too
Getting the equivalent amount of times to play or freedom to play on the free version would cost you about £23-26. (You need to trade 3,000 pokediamonds for something that will generate a daily amount of pokediamonds for you to use in the game)
Free version is very playable though and you don't really really need the paid version.

It's a freemium game. You get a limited amount of times to play per day (kinda like Pokemon Shuffle). The retail release removes the payment component of the game.
From NintendoLife:
The packaged version includes newly reconfigured features such as Poké Diamonds, the Poké Diamond Digger and VIP Cards, whilst removing the paid content component.
Poké Diamonds make your adventures more fun and help you along in your mission to discover Pokémon for the king. After completing the tutorial, visit the shop to receive your allotment of 3,000 Poké Diamonds. In addition, you will also be able to access the Poké Diamond Digger. The Poké Diamond Digger will provide you with 40 new Poké Diamonds every day. Once you obtain 3,000 Poké Diamonds and the Poké Diamond Digger, a special VIP Card feature will open up. There are two VIP Cards, the Balloon VIP Card and the Timing Stop VIP Card and they can be used to more easily voyage through the wonderful kingdom of Toy Pokémon, collecting more Pokémon for the king!

Just turn on the 3DS camera and point the camera at the QR code. It should launch the eShop page for Pokemon Rumble where you can download it for free.

Thanks never heard of a 'freemium' game before, thought all that sort of nonsense like waiting for a new life or a certain time before can play again was just tablet nonsense for tablets. Suppose could look at it as being something between a demo and a paid for game.

May be semantics but Nintendo calls those games Free To Start as they feel it's more accurate. But yeah, you pretty much hit the nail on the head with that summary.
If you play in short 15 minute bursts a day though, you'd probably never need to spend money on some of Nintendo's Free To Start games like Pokemon Rumble and Pokemon Shuffle.

you have never paid a freemium game. ie candy crush and most games on app store/play store with in game purchases?

Correct I don't like or use things like tablets, android phones. I am aware of those types of games from other people playing them. Call me old fashioned by all means, but I like a TV for watching movies, a phone for telephone calls, a camera for taking photos, a computer for internet and so on...
Someone has been suggesting on another thread the new NX console could involve a tablet interface, really hope they are wrong as that is clearly not up my street.
