Wide colour range, local dimming and decent upscaling of SD and HD material to 4k.

Good deal because with voucher code FTV50 (£50 off TVs that are £600+) brings price down to £645 from £695.

5 year extended warranty directly from Panasonic via application.

Free "rapid" delivery included.

Cheaper than John Lewis or Curry's by around £50 with same 5 year warranty. Richer Sounds offer a year extra on warranty (6 instead of 5) but costs £50 more.

For those with kids, accidental damage cover is only £70 for 5 years (same as JL) but lot cheaper than Curry's.

I ordered this TV from the Co-op on Black Friday, it was set up before 8 o clock on the Sunday morning. That was free delivery as well. I highly recommend both the TV and seller. Sky, Netflix, PC games all look great through this. I did manage to get it for £599 though.

The equivalent Sony at the same price point (X83C) has a long list of software issues, which turned me off. Someone on here pointed to the 300+ page support thread with issues.

The equivalent Samsung is the JU6800 which Curry's are selling for £730 ish. It will have one advantage on that Samsung support stated to me it will get HDMI 2.0a (with HDR) support via firmware update. No time frame specified but one of the first.

The Sony I've addressed before and bar the software issues was my first choice. The Samsung JU6500 doesn't offer the same colour range nor local dimming, which makes the JU6800 the real contender but around £80(?) more. The only place I could see that offers the 50 inch JU6800 with 5 years warranty was Curry's but their accidental damage cover costs are horrendous otherwise I'd be willing to bridge the gap.

The LG 680V doesn't offer the same colour range nor local dimming. The 850V is the same as the 680V but with 3D.

I think on paper the wider colour range and local dimming makes it sound good but to be honest need to see them in real life to see if it actually matters.

I purchased from Rakuten (PRC Direct) just before Christmas using a discount code to bring down to £608, Rakuten gave me £97 worth of points and I went through Quidco so got another £20 back (already tracked and paid). So tv only set me back about £490 and I received the 5 years warranty certificate from Panasonic (via email) in about 3 days. As for the tv, it is a joy to use, the os is perfect and very fast (compared to Samsung in my bedroom). SD picture not the best but we watch alot of stuff via the new Now Tv box which it upscales and the picture is very very good. I also Miracast Showbox from my LG phone and the picture/sound are both excellent. I recommend this tv for the price and I think Rakuten are still the cheapest place to find it at the moment. Have some heat op for the tv, it is great.

Same they're 3 years behind Sony with 'their nano crystal'. Sony have this technology it's called Triluminos Display, this along with Sony's X1 Processor kicks the absolute crap out of a Samsung. Compare that 6800 with Sony's X83 (side by side with the same content) you'll soon see how much better Sony do with upscaling, colour repdouction, clarity etc.

2 Jan 16 1 #26
Yeah but with the Sony you get a buggy android os underpinning it. I'd wait until Sony's 2016 range is released and see if they are more stable.
The Sony range have there fans as do LG and Samsung, I've also compared the Samsung and Sony's and I'd say the image quality is closed than LOGICALX is suggesting. Samsung or LG's more stable os would tip the balance for me personally though.
My advice is to find your nearest richer sounds store as they will give you decent unbiased advice and show you each of the models side by side showing the same input.
Taking a USB stick with you with a mix of SD, HD and sport video clips is worth doing as well.
Ignore Bobo slugging off the Panasonic's lack of upscaling, he can't grasp the concept that all TV's upscale all content to there native resolution....... Just some are better than others.

Utter rubbish.
I bought one of these in the Black Friday sales from Co-op and it is a fantastic TV. The price just makes it a total bargain too.
My previous benchmark for PQ performance was a calibrated Panasonic 55VT30 with all sources fed through a Lumagen Radiance XS3D video processor. The SD and HD performance of the CX680 blows that away. A good SD source is almost HD like in PQ and a decent HD source is the best I've seen.
I was looking for a 50" TV to replace a 42" TV and wasn't even bothered about 4K due to lack of content. The cost of this panel is similar an equivalent 50" HD display so I thought why not. Wouldn't change that decision if I could now as even if I just viewed HD content, it would still look better than any HD capable panel currently available.

There are some very minor issues with this TV but, they're the same as you'd find on any LCD TV on the market. Those are narrow viewing angles where the colours lose saturation when viewed off axis. This is a limitation of the panel technology used (VA). On the flip side, you get plasma level blacks (mine measures at 0.015cd/m2 - my VT30 was 0.014cd/m2). The second is issues with motion handling. This can be mitigated with the Intelligent Frame Creation (IFC) control though, if it really bothers you.

You won't be disappointed with this TV.

For a proper objective review, read this.

Bought this tv back in the summer from JL.

Positives
1) Picture quality generally very good, probably the best at this price point
2) Firefox OS is fantastic - very responsive, rock solid. Netflix, Prime, iPlayer all work flawlessly - we use these now far more than the VM XL package, as it's a joy to use.
3) It physically looks more expensive than it is - slim bezel, nice minimal stand.
4) DLNA playback is decent, with a nice 'preview' feature.

Negatives
1) For some reason, there's no shortcut button on the remote to cycle through preset picture modes, including custom settings. You have to go through the menu everytime, which is a pain if you want to experiment with different setups.
2) Not much else at the price point.

Summary: If it had Android or some other OS at the price, it'll would still be a decent buy. But the Firefox OS is the big surprise - it's terrific. Panasonic have pulled a great move by securing it exclusively. For a good comparison of Firefox v Android, read this http://www.theregister.co.uk/2015/07/17/breaking_fad_android_tv_and_firefox_os_head_to_head/

Is this yet another rebadged Vestel?
My grand daughter had 3X Panasonics in a year before getting an LG.
My experience with Panasonic NON customer care put me off ever buying their products again after they said take your television back to Comet because we have nothing to do with their imports and then Comet went bust and they decided to accept faults in Panasonic TVs sold by Comet but by then I went LG as well.

We bought this model a month or so back from John Lewis for £649 (they price matched Crampton & Moore) so we have their 5 year guarantee on top - delivery and setup were great, no problems whatsoever.

As for the tv, I went through *loads* of comparisons (annoyingly perfectionist about these things), most notably the Samsung UE48JU6400, and having tried them out extensively in store, I'm so glad we opted for the Panasonic. The picture quality is great (bar the fact that I now notice SD is worse but then switching from 4k or HD will do that) and didn't even require tinkering out of the box, the sound quality is perfectly fine without a sound bar, the app variety is good, the OS and menu layout are simple enough, the physical design is nicely thin and minimalist, and given ours is wall mounted in a wide lounge I'm incredibly impressed with the viewing angles (I've not yet found a spot where the picture has diminished).

Oh I also meant to say we're primarily avid gamers, from the Xbone to the n64 (which will always be my favourite), and it's been brilliant for that too.

Not all 4k tv do upscale to 4k, they would display an upscaling based on a non native resolution, ex: 1080p input to 1080output max on a 4k screen . Proper upscaling would do any input to max 3840x2160 output. Only Samsung, sony and I think LG would do a proper 3840x2160 upscale. If good or not that is another matter but surely all the tv that do it can visibly show the improvement. Samsung must be the very best for this and there is no need to purchase aplayer with an upscaler apart from the fact that there are no tuners in the market that can upscale to 4k, I own a Panasonic and I was horrified to hear from the customer service that I need to buy upscalers if I want that. Originally I thought that all 4k tv would do that.

bobo53
3 Jan 16 #64
they do not, lol. You never had a 4k tv, sorry. Only Samsung, sony and lg I think it does, all the others do upscale in a non native resolution which makes the picture worse. Some are obviously better or worse than others, also upscaling to full 3840x2160 does not mean it suppose to be better, it all depends how good they want to do it, all matter of spending more for top better looking upscaling. This particular tv will upscale and output the same input resolution, so it will output in a non native resolution making it worse. I got a better Panasonic than this one and I know what I am talking about. even Panasonic admitted that they do not upscale they waytt is meant to be, they want us to buy the upscalers, the problem is that do not exist tuners that do upscale same ad the video players at 4k

Displaying 1080p input on a 4k screen is upscaling, by definition. There aren't different output resolutions on modern screens, like CRTs used to have - modern TVs always display a fixed number of pixels.

of course it is upscaling even so I would say there are different ways to do that, but you confused me, here we are talking about what is good and what it is not (practically because I do not read books) . Not sure what you mean by fixed because to my knowledge I can upscale any resolutions including the custom made to fill up the screen with my pc or any pc

20+yrs working in Enterprise IT (I support Datacenters full of servers) suggests I do know how stuff works.
It's simple, connect any device outputting any resolution to a 4k TV and it will output that source in its own native resolution to fill the screen. If it wasn't up scaling the image would be in a tiny box in the middle of the screen.
Some tvs will have better up scaling chipsets than others but they will all do it.
bobo53
3 Jan 16 #73
it goes against you saying that you got 20 years experience in IT because looks like you ignore the very basics how this works. "IT" is about programming, therefore I cannot say you should know about this unless you done your own private research and main of all real tests. The fact that a picture is displayed in full in the screen it is something that does do automatically, it does zoom it, the better the tv and the better should appear even if zoomed. Try with your pc at a resolution of as an example 800x600 (can be anything) unscaled and will be right in the middle, upscale it and will fill up the screen (it does not upscale to 4k), only video material can but in a virtual way. It is not upscaling at 4k at all but will still fill up the screen at 800x600 in a non native resolution, the screen will stay at 800x600, it will not upscale the way you mean it to be. The same does apply for any material you feed on it unless the tv is capable with all the trickery the manufacturer can use to upscale to a full 3840x2160. Obviously it is not going to make 800x600 video input to look amazing but as we know it will look less clearer if this trick is not used. The higher the real resolution of the input the better will look on an upscaled 4k screen. Most of the rubbish for sale in the market would do what you say but not in what I call a virtual 4k resolution. Samsung gives a virtual 4k resolution plus few other makes all the rest cannot be good as good as that as they only zoom the picture in the screen and made better by the use of software. 1080p TV's are still the best to look at 1080p material even on the more crappy tv if you understand what I mean.
finally note as you already understood that English is not my main language and surely some of you still keeping misunderstanding me, surely because you do not know what I am talking about.
Finally and with all the respects, working for IT does not mean anything about this stuff even so virtually connected. I remember of a person a very intelligent one in my opinion with a lot of experience in It stuff, was a game programmer too. Do you know what!!! I had to teach him how to install windows and all it comes with it, lol. The positive side was that he could easily follow instructions. Unbelievable but just an example of people that does know a lot in the books which surely I hope it does not apply to you. Anyway any hd tv or 4k is capable to display any unscaled resolution and many scaled resolutions in a non native resolution screen.
