Trick with these is to avoid triggering sensor when changing bulb/moving lamp. If you disconnect from mains first, will last a lot longer. Holding on to the lamp for a significant amount of time will blow sensor!

Anyone know where you can get the unit which controls the touch system?
I have a couple of really nice touch lamps which have stopped working and is a shame to throw them out of I can get them fixed.
Tried all the usual places but nowhere seems to sell the control unit on its own.

For the price that it would be for the control unit just get these, I'm guessing it wouldn't be much difference in price.

I got one from Ebay. You have to be careful with a lot of them as they are only designed for 110v so won't work here. I just had a look in my Ebay history and the guy that I bought mine off still has them for sale. They're a bit more expensive than elsewhere but I can vouch for them working...
Just what I was needing and without me having to search. Many thanks

Amazon UK sell various lamp touch sensors that you can fit but they have their restrictions (bulb type, wattage) and I don't know how easy they are to fit.

My first set failed just inside 12 months, Argos replaced them. The second set have been going well for over 2 years now. I did notice the design had changed slightly from the first set. They are small but great for my needs, used daily.

Replacement cover for 3 years is showing as £2.49, might be worth bolting on if folks are worried about reliability. I think I'll add it in view of these comments.

I never buy the extra cover as everything is covered by the EU Free of charge, two-year guarantee and if anything goes wrong they have to fix or replace .

Shame that they aren't led lamps...
What bulb fitting do these take?
loaky to solid
3 Jan 16#17
Well they can be LED, depending on which bulb you get. Can't find any mention of fitting, I'm assuming BC fitting anyone?
luminox to solid
3 Jan 16#20
It doesn't matter what type of fitting it has, you can simply buy a very cheap adaptor for almost any fitting , you can also buy an inexpensive led bulb from poundland which I think will work in a touch lamp, and befoer anyone **** off the poundland led's I have been using them since they started selling them over a couple of years, none have failed.

These are four-touch ones - brighter, dim, dimmer and then off. I use energy saving bulbs and all three-touch show the same brightness - bulbs do not dim.

Good deal home base have similar. If purchased by 4th January you pay £5.19. Available online mocha colour
I bought these about 3 years ago after finding them in a holiday cottage we were staying in and assumed they were expensive, so very happy to find they were argos cheap ones. Still on the first bulb and no problems with them at all. Love them.

Cold. Why? Because i've had 2 pairs of these in the past. First pair, one worked OK until i got electric shocks every time i touched it (wish i was joking). The second one in the pack was dead on arrival.
Second pair. First one kept blowing bulbs (no i didnt rapid touch it), second one did the same electric shock thing again. Absolute junk, meanwhile my 10 year old normal bedside light is still going strong.
At least they covered the 'buy cheap buy twice' part for you!

2 with same problem - have you had your house wiring checked recently? Is something wired incorrectly elsewhere causing earth/neutral issues?

3 Jan 16#50
I've never had any issues, did you plug it in like this by any chance?
moneysavingkitten
3 Jan 16#49
No you can't because you need a dimable bulb. You can get dimable LED bulbs, but not from Poundland and they will probably make loud buzzing noises.

3 Jan 16#51
By the way, these lamps don't have special "touch sensors" in them. You are simply adding a capacitance to the circuit, therefore they also only work when you are touching ground yourself in order to complete the circuit. Try touching one while jumping in the air - it won't do anything!

These are fabulous, they vibrate when you touch them (if it hasn't been mentioned). I got them for a couple of quid more thinking they were an excellent deal then.

I bought some of these about 10 years ago from argos and they still work fine... Bought another set though a few years later and they lasted no time at all. I like to use it on very low settings though and I found a 40w too much so I replaced the bulb on my one with a 15w cooker bulb, much better switching that on from pitch black if you have other lighting for when you want more. Top brightness on that is still surprisingly bright anyway to be honest (in a darkened room obviosuly).

I bought some dimmable led bulbs from b&q for these and they work well. Was surprised they only cost £3.50 for Philips.

Bought a set and at 1st they worked great. Switched 1 on, a bit of a crackle and that was that. Argos promptly replaced and no sooner than it was plugged in, it did the same again. What I will say is, there is a warning sticker on the bottom to use only "quality" bulbs. I was using Phillips but they were the energy saving type that warm up once on. This may well be the issue but the bulbs work fine in our old lamps so took them back for a full refund.
Mrdom to Skol
6 Jan 16#66
these lamps are totally unsuitable for fluorescent energy saver bulbs, thats definitely the problem. i wouldn't be surprised if the instructions explained that...though to be fair Argos should make it clear on the website/in the book which it isnt at all. Were your old lamps by any chance normal ones with a simple on/off switch?
