You can use the on screen display through your TV to get the information.
Only certain years of certain models are affected and they can only tell that if you have the serial number sadly.
Worked for me, big time, may not work for others, sorry to say.

Onkyo = Best customer service EVER.
I got caught up in the "no sound from AV receiver" debacle.
Headphones worked a treat, but nothing from the speakers.
Onkyo collected FOC, repaired, re-delivered FOC and it's as good as new.
All done in the 2 weeks over Christmas.
Now, you might say that the issue should never have been there in the first place and that it's only right they repaired.
BUT, I bought mine secondhand.

How did you get them to do this? I've contacted them as I have the same issues and they're saying I'll need to pay a local dealer to fix it myself?

15 Jan 16#83
Do you have a phone number for Onkyo, if so could you post or pm it to me? I can't get past the first bit of the online form as it requires serial number, which is typically on the back of the receiver and to get it I'd have to disconnect all the cables (a LOT) to get it out the TV unit and see it. Would be so annoying if I did that just to find they won't repair it. Surely they can tell me from the model if they have a repair plan that covers it? Don't see why they need the serial number immediately.
Finally does anyone know if there is any other way of accessing the serial number on an Onkyo TX-SR 607? Is it accessible in one of the on screen menus?

I bypassed the dealer network and went straight online.

I also found these two features of Onkyo setup useful:
- limit the max volume;
- reset to a predefined volume every time you power the receiver on.

Can anyone recommend an AV receiver that will be compatible with 3 ohm speakers, I have some nice Panasonic ones that I don't really want to part with, in the future I would like to buy a set of uprights but for the moment I really just wanted to get an AV to start my home stereo upgrade off. Any help would be much appreciated.
ANDYF to oldskoolpug
7 Jan 16#75
Well, actually, they will all handle 3 Ohms, provided you don't turn up the volume to the point where you draw too much current. If you want to run them safely, you would need a voltmeter, a knowledge of your amp's spec for max current, and a knowledge of Ohm's law and the equations for power:
P=V^2/R = I^2*R
If this makes sense, you can do it. If not, don't start playing with it.

This would depend on your set up. I have a TV and projector I want to output to, that I'll want future proof for UHD. Thus I want both of the outputs to be HDCP 2.2.
That's why I'm going for the Denon, but at the end of the day, it's horses for courses.
The important thing is to make sure it does everything you need and (for me) has the right level of future proofing built in.

That's correct only 3 of the 8 are HDCP2.2 but are you realistically going to need more that 3 HDCP 2.2 ports?

As long as they've go the features YOU need then I don't think you'll be disappointed with any of them, personally I wanted zone able HDMI out so I could feed a TV in the kitchen any input from the living room independently of what was being watched in the living room, the Pioneer was the only AV amp in this price range that could do that.

The Denon 2200 is now down to £379 everywhere, but I noticed that one outlet online (can't remember which - google it) was selling it for £369.90. Phoned Richer Sounds and they agreed to beat the price (it's their price policy) by £10 so available now at Richer for £359.90.
I'd say it was a better bet as it's a What Hifi award winner, has 4K upscaling (Onkyo doesn't) and HDCP 2.2 - 8in/2 out (Onkyo only has 3in/1 out). Extra £20 for the Denon makes more sense to me.

There's discrete 5.1 and pseudo 5.1. It depends on the source.
If you have a 5.1 audio source, you can bitstream to the AV to decode for discrete surround.
If you're playing stereo music for example, you could make it play out of the 2 front speakers, all of the speakers, or pseudo 5.1 like Dolby Pro Logic.

Who wants to tell me what exactly an amp is for?
Turtletom100 to imcconvey
4 Jan 162#51
Well I'm no expert but here it goes.
Amp (maybe the wrong term as these are a/v receivers) which is short for audio/visual.
They take a audio and/or video signal, amplifies the signals (where amp comes from I guess) and outputs it.
I only have 1 hdmi going into my telly, this connects to the av reciever, this is my "output signal"
Then on the rear of the unit I have my electronics connected via hdmi which are classed as the "inputs"
So this means that my sky box, bluray player, ps4, android box are all connected to the receiver.
Now when I watch sky, bluray etc the signal is sent to the receiver and processed, upscaled, decoded and sent up the hdmi which goes to my telly. The result being a better picture (unless your telly already upscales to 4k), sound signal is played through a speaker setup and not the telly speakers, which is alot better especially for hd channels, most hd programs/films have dolby digital. The telly will never be able to handle it the same as a surround setup does. Also using a system with hdmi means you will get true dolby, dts hd master via arc (aslong as your telly has arc). That is a whole new conversation though.
Sorry this is a bit basic, it is late and I'm a novice myself.

I looked at buying one of these last year but decided to wait due to the limited support for HDCP2.2 and HDMI2.0 - it may not mean a lot to you right now but when 4k devices (including Blu-ray) start to be commonly available this year, you'll rue the lack of compatible ports.

only grumble (quite major one actually) is the 5.1.2 limit for Atmos. If you're just planning that setup it's a great receiver with good compatability and future proofing - seems it will even pass HDR through

My Onkyo TX-NR515 had issues with the board way out of warranty. Onkyo customer service was great, had the Reciever back to me within a week and it didn't cost a penny.

3 Jan 161#23
You don't need to use banana plugs, wire is fine. The connectore on the back unscrew to leave a hole down the side, inside the connector. You just put your wire into the side of the connector, then screw to tighten (make sure none of the wire is coming out the other side).

Yes the terminals work with bare wire, you insert the wire and screw them down.

Wish I knew more about amps to be able to upgrade, bought an Onkyo package deal with speakers a few years ago now, this one - the speakers don't use the same connector types (just wire straight in without connectors) but if I was to buy some connectors, could I plug those speakers and the sub into this better amp, at least until I upgrade the speakers to something better? Or does an amp like this need different speakers from the start?

Is anyone using one of these for multi room hdmi? it's hard to find out the capability from reviews etc. if I got one of these with all my sources, could I take the 2nd hdmi output into hdmi input on an older onkyo in another room and use two sources simultaneously with separate audio ( the latter provided by the second recv). what audio formats get sent to the 2nd? is it passthrough? also, can you output the same source to both. part of the manual says zone two is only a subset of sources (all non visual in the manual), but that would make no sense - why have a second out.

I'm reluctant to replace it as it does work perfectly once it starts displaying but is a nuisance to have to remember to power it up early.
Tried contacting (genserve) Onkyo repair center and they said they had never heard of any HDMI board problems with this model (despite several reports on the web) and wanted to charge me £90+ for a repair despite the receiver being 5 years old and only having a second hand value of about £60 tops.....

I do suffer with upgradeitis and the last Onkyo AVR I had that suffered this problem was a 606 about 6-7 years ago....
Tried contacting (genserve) Onkyo repair center and they said they had never heard of any HDMI board problems with this model (despite several reports on the web) and wanted to charge me £90+ for a repair despite the receiver being 5 years old and only having a second hand value of about £60 tops.....
Pretty disappointing service and would make me think twice about another Onkyo unless it was dirt cheap.
big improvement on my oknyo 609
And paid £479 from richer sounds
Heat
Prices are dropping though as I paid this for my SR444 a few months ago.
