5 Jan 16#60
That's the problem - you can't do it very easily. You'd need to check the focal length equivalent for each "optical" lens, as it is not standard across the board, but there are common equivalent lengths.
When you see mm quoted, you can broadly compare with mm. Optical is a royal pain in the backside for real comparisons to anything else!

I was being sarcastic, I meant 'deary me I still don't understand any of it'.
The 3x business is ... not clear, still. I want to be able to compare a 60x zoom to a xyz mm zoom...
lovelybeer
5 Jan 16#58
I'm not sure what you mean by that, so I will assume you're not being sarcastic.
Optical zoom is simply the big number divided by the small number on a given lens, usually a compact or bridge. So, 35-105mm is 3x optical.
...you get the idea. Every camera that has "optical zoom" will be different (as the small and large mm range will vary). In fairness, reading my swift replies earlier, I can see why it wasn't clear!

5 Jan 16#56
i see what you're saying, but it's quite easy to work out broadly:
mm / 35 = optical
optical x 35 = mm
It will vary by lens, because the optical range is what it is - but doesn't tell you where it starts and ends, so a chart won't really be applicable.
kittykat69
5 Jan 16#55
I need a chart that would compare the optical zooms and give me the mm equivalent or vice versa
lovelybeer
5 Jan 16#54
Not sure what you're confused about, but when you see "3x optical" it usually means "3x 35mm standard = 105mm". Similarly, 10x optical would be 350mm.
kittykat69

lovelybeer to kittykat69
5 Jan 16#52
The digital bit is misleading in the description - ignore!
Regarding 35mm comparison, you need to bear in mind that these sensors are cropped by 2x (APS-C is 1.6x), so, 14mm in micro 4/3 is 28mm in the standard 35mm equivalent. Basically double the focal lengths for the relevant comparison.

Hi TK42, Thanks for all your help. I'm lost now tz60-tz70 0r fz200/ I don't really see a big difference in tz60 and tz70, I don't know about fz200. I'm not even an amateur photographer, I know nothing about 4/3 and shutter speeds, etc, just looking a decent camers to take photos. I like 60 & 70, you can carry in your pocket, that;s my knowledge on cameras. Just tell me which one and I will buy it. Cheers pat.

Can I ask, which is best, I'm buying a camera, I would like to have good zoom, it doesn't have to reach the moon, and also good close up photos, kids parties, blowing out candles, etc. Is there a big difference in Panasonic, Tz60 Tz70 and Fz200. Is fz 200 best?
Alvie to pat0000
2 Jan 16#41
The difference between the Tz60 and Tz70 is small. Even though, the Tz70 has a lower MP count, it has a better dynamic range and better quality at high ISOs. Also, it has a better EVF.
For comparison between the Fz200 and Tz70, check this thread: http://www.dpreview.com/forums/thread/3807361
There is also a link in that thread with comparison images so you can decide which is better for yourself, many are saying the Tz70 is better.

A review here states that the FZ200 is better than the TZ70 (much better in low light due to brighter constant f2.8 lens) http://www.expertreviews.co.uk/digital-cameras/compact-digital-cameras/1402580/panasonic-tz70-review/page/0/1
It might also be worth taking a look at Olympus Stylus 1 at £329. This also has a contacnt f2.8 lens but slightly larger sensor.
This review compares the Stylus 1 with the FZ200 and the RX10 to give you some idea of the differences http://www.cameralabs.com/reviews/Olympus_STYLUS_1/index.shtml
The deal posted here (E-PL6) will give you the best image quality though due to it's much larger image sensor. The 40-150mm lens will give you a 300mm equiv zoom, but it would mean having two seperate lenses.

For myself, I found the epl-5 a joy. The image quality is excellent, certainly on par with most aps-c efforts. The epl-6 shares most of the same attributes and both lenses are great. Any dslr will be bigger, and Sony lenses are more expensive and there are fewer options available.

Hi guys, what I'm trying to work out is, Nikon 900 is more expensive but i don't need to carry 2 lenses and keep swapping. both take great photos, if I can afford Nikon, is it better to buy that, I know nothing about cameras and really need advice, Holiday snaps in New York, beach photos, family events, kids parties, etc. Which camera is best for me?

30 Dec 15#25
Hi, the P900 has a massive zoom range but it's image quality is limited by the smaller sensor. Have a look at the Sony RX10 or the Panasonic FZ1000 these have a much larger 1" sensor but also have a good zoom range, both are available for around £440 at the moment (search on HUKD). The Sony is better built and weather sealed the Panasonic has a longer zoom.

The Olympus will take better quality photos than the TZ60 and P900 as it has a much larger sensor. It depends on how close (macro) what zoom range, budget and how large your canvas prints are going to be?

The more important decision, do you want to have a micro four thirds system, or a sony E-mount. Once you have decided that, then choose the camera you want in the system you want. The first interchangeable lens camera you buy will likely be long gone in a few years time, but you will likely still be using the system - it is expensive to change systems once you have spent a lot of money on lenses, accessories, batteries etc..\
The Sony is a fine system, but the lens selection is better in the micro four thirds world, and the camera / lens combination will be smaller. Take the following for example -
That's actually a great idea as that seems better value than this in my opinion. The lowest the G7 has been on Amazon is £519, so the G7 at £319 is a bargain. It can take up to 2 months for the cashback though

I mainly would want to use the camera for video b-roll, but just something cheap to start with. I want to do product reviews and get cool video shots like how HardwareCanucks does, I know that they probably have gear worth thousands but that's the style of video I want to do. The D3300 is about £279, the A5100 was £274 - £279, and so is this. Which would be the best?

The D3300 will have better image quality due to the larger sensor and lack of AA filter, it also has a viewfinder which is useful for composing shots with. This comes with the second lens though which will give you a much longer zoom range.
