Sorry mate but this is wrong, the Nvidia 980M doesn't meet the minimum requirements. GTX 970 is the minimum requirement for Oculus Rift, and anything less than this is risking it. It's a bit confusing but the 'M' laptop versions of Nvidia cards are a lot less powerful than the desktop versions.

In the link they're talking about the Oculus Rift DK2, which only needs to run at 75fps compared to 90fps in the consumer rift. On top of that the consumer rift has a higher resolution. Oculus are only supporting GTX 970+ on their store, and games developed independently like Elite Dangerous have steeper requirements.

You *might* be okay with the 980M, but with VR the lower framerate is a killer. Constant 75+ fps is needed to trick your brain into believing what you're seeing is real, and if fps gets really bad it's a trip to barf town.

Been glued to HUKD hunting for parts to build a rift rig soon, thought I'd warn anybody considering this.

Well 99% of people never take their laptop out of the house

Very few people go to LAN party's, but I personally wouldn't even want to turn up to one with a laptop.

My desktop only cost me £600 including two monitors, would blow this things away too, even though its about 3 years old.

Reason why gaming laptops are stupid

1. Overheating (Fans are crap, no air inside case)
2. Battery Life
3. Performance (A laptop i7 is not the same as a desktop i7, desktop i7 would blow it away, same applies but even more so with GPU's)
5. Maintenance and Reliability (moving your computer, dropping it etc does it no favours, inevitable with a laptop, destroys hard drive etc or if you screen/keyboard (basically anything) breaks you are screwed)
6. Can't really upgrade it
7. The keyboards on laptops are crap
8. Really awkward for gaming in my opinion

Just because you don't LAN doesn't mean that other's don't. Far more people also travel on business. Incidentally, laptops are becoming very normal at LAN parties, as unless you've got a titan, you can get much the same power ina more portable form. I'd also be interested where you got your quote of 99% from. Source?

Your first statement is ridiculous. If you spent £600 on a desktop then unless you've gotten some terrible second hand monitors, you'll have spent about £200 on them and about £400 on your computer, which means it probably has an i3 CPU, which will perform worse than a mobile i7, and a £100-150 GPU - possibly a 7850 - which is significantly weaker than the 980m. Either you spent far more than you claim or you are seriously overestimating your desktop.

You are referring to gaming laptops from several years ago, not the current status quo. I can understand your thoughts, as I had the exact same response to my friend when he bought a gaming laptop, but then I actually looked at the current state of them and they've come forward dramatically.

1. Overheating is really down to the specific brand. From the reviews your likely correct on this laptop, but the new alienwares are very good for temperatures - greatly assisted by ever decreasing power draws in CPU/GPU etc.
2. Again, battery life is crap in this laptop by all accounts, but I've seen a new alienware run fallout 4 for 4-5 hours, which is pretty respectable.
3. Performance is relative. I know plenty of people running 960/965 GPUs. The 980m is just below the 970 in terms of power, which is very meaty.
4(5). I promise that desktops don't like being dropped either. Should we also factor in spilling of drinks, house fires and power surges for this?
5(6) True, but then given intel CPUs require a new mobo every two years, really how upgradable is your desktop? You can keep the case and the PSU (maybe, haswell required specific PSU features when it was released), but if you're replacing your RAM (DDR3 to DDR4), mobo, CPU, GPU...you've basically replaced the entire PC anyway. The only gains you have are that you can do it piecemeal.
6(7) True, but then so are all non-mechanical keyboards. And you can plug one of those in if you want at home.
7(:sunglasses: I'd agree they're not ideal for playing on the move. If you plug them into a monitor etc. then they're functionally no different from a desktop. Except you can also take it away to play with. Is it optimal? Probably not. But you're also playing when you'd otherwise be unable.

Personally I'm not going to opt for this laptop as it has some serious issues around heating and battery life that I would rather pay a premium to avoid, but just from the raw spec, it's definitely a good deal.

I travel a lot, as much as I would love to lug around a desktop it does not really work out for me. This is why people buy gaming laptops. Overheating, battery life, noise, etc .... none of that matters if you can put it in your bag, take it to wherever you are going, plug it in at the hotel and spend the night playing games rather than watching whatever crap is on TV. Desktops are great, but they have a serious limitation if you do travel. I disagree with your point that 99% of people do not take laptops out of the house, just about everyone I know has a gaming laptop for that exact reason.

I have seen two variants of this laptop, one has sold out already and both were selling at the same price with the same specifications, except one of them has a i7-4710HQ processor and this deal is for the i7-4710MQ. According to Medion, the i7-4710HQ variant doesn't have a backlit keyboard.

cannot understand why anyone would want a gaming laptop. They are pieces of crap. Seriously a desk is like £10 in Ikea, get a proper computer if you are going to spend £900.
Elivercury to mseeds1
26 Jan 16 #127
Have you seen the spec of this? You would struggle to build a desktop (or "proper computer" as you put it) as powerful as this if you didn't already own a monitor, windows and other accessories. Gaming laptops used to be incredibly poor value compared to a desktop, but times have moved on significantly and they are quite competitive now, both in terms of pricing and power.

Incidentally, there are many reasons you might prefer to have a more portable system. I personally would like one to make attending LAN parties with friends easier, however I'm sure people who regularly travel for work or other reasons would also appreciate having one. It's not a case of one size fits all.

Of course, you're welcome to take your "proper computer" on a train - desk and all - and prove me wrong. Please supply pictures.

Sitting on the fence here myself.

Would be nice to have a decent machine to take to LAN parties rather than my mid-tower - as much from a handling/life expectancy angle as manual handling. That said, I found this review: http://www.notebookcheck.com/Test-Medion-Erazer-X7835-Notebook.140826.0.html

It's obviously in german and I've had to translate it, but it appears that cooling isn't amazing and it regularly throttles under load. On a more practical aspect, the case can heat to 50+ degrees and the power adapter to 60+, which isn't something you want to be touching. It also only has 42 minutes(!!!) battery life under load. Obviously given the size of it (17 inch and approx 3.5kg) it's not exactly designed to sit on your lap, and is meant to be plugged in, but that's still a shocking battery life. If it's throttling due to thermal loads then that's also not living up to it's expectations of performance either. Couple that with fairly poor reviews of the brand and I'm not sure whether I want to take the punt.

Do have to reiterate how fantastic the spec is for the price though. My brother just got an Alienware for Christmas with an 980m and it's very impressive. His also had DDR4 and skylake, but then, it also cost ~£600 more for the privilege.

Looking at the images, the 6th one in is the keyboard. If I zoom in on that it doesn't look like a UK keyboard.
I don't know what that symbol is above the 3, but it's not a £ and there are some strange extra characters with umlauts to the right of the L and P characters. What keyboard is that - and does it come with an English version of Windoze?

yes I do - but I would not touch anything with the name Medion on it - I have seen that tat for sale in my local Lidl and I have seen a friends Medion desktop up close - rubbish and the mind boggles, expect problems not long after the warranty expires - that might be OK for some, but I expect £900 tech product to last longer

Can someone recommend a desktop which is better value than this?

I dont play games but need it for data gathering/mining and statistical single core processing. Fast SSD access is a must, was thinking of getting this but I dont want it to break in a years time.

I had a Alienware which was very fragile and a waste of money in my opinion because of the premium, maybe things are different now Dell own them. But that experience is worrying me due to the comments here about this manufacturer.

I cant seem to find a desktop which has this spec for even the same amount of money, are there a list of sites/ manufactures I should frequently check for deals ?

You could put something similar together here for a tiny bit less assuming you already have a monitor. The quick config I did had an i5 instead of an i7, but the heavily overclocked i5 probably performs similarly and doesn't thermal throttle. Also while a gtx 970 may not look as strong at first glance, it does out perform a 980m. That's also just a quick look thing. Probably could find it cheaper, although yoyotech are quality, they're definitely not the cheapest last time I check! :stuck_out_tongue:

Exactly this, having used the DK2 on a 980M, the performance is sub-par. The full rift will struggle hugely on this machine. So if you intend to get this machine for the rift, think again.

But if you don't mind having a hoover on every time you play games (headset advised), it's a great deal.

Definitely no laptops within 500 quid that can come close spec wise.

Makes the 1300 I just spent on a 970m alienware 17 look downright pathetic tbh, but fan noise, build, and form factor are key for me. its a tank and it's almost silent and cool running even on bf4.

and this is one of the reasons why it is at this price. You would not see any real world performance difference between this and skylake i7 apart from battery life. It's not like you will be using battery very much on a 17" laptop anyway.

It's fine, refreshed soon? you mean a new model or? I don't think so as the Skylake version isn't old at all, The keyboard is really nice, steelseries. The windows key being on the right doesn't bother me, nor does the enter, for me it all feels right, if anything, it stops you hitting the windows key by accident when gaming.

I don't have farcry installed (I have it on ps4) but I have Metal gear solid phantom pain and that runs great on full, I imagine that farcry4 wouldn't be a problem either at all, in fact I'm sure it would run much better than on the consoles, Check out this video for some games on the laptop (farcry at the end).

hi,
Just have to say have had the x7835 model with the 512 ss hd for about the last 5 months and what an amazing bit of kit ,
very impressive , i have the graphics on nvidia set as default and battery life for web surfing , watching movies is over 2 and a half hours , would be more i guess if i set it as intel ,

I have no complants in any areas about this , well maybe only one , the uk models do not ave the back lit keyboard unlike to euro models ,

as for gaming which is the reason i bought this it will play any game out now on ultra settings at full hd at well over 60fps

boot time is under 10 secs , never really hear the fan unless heavy gaming ,
2.1 sound really good ,
runs deeper graphics than my ps4 with better loading times (cheaper games)and you just plug in the hdmi to play on the big screen,
add an xbox one wired controller and you have a multi tasking console beater

any questions please feel free to ask and ill try and respond on here ,this has been priced at 1499.00 for a long time so this new price is an absolute bargain
power pack is huge and does get hot ,
hope this helps the people that are interested

I had an awful experience with Medion when I bought a laptop before. It constantly overheated to over 100C when gaming. I sent it off for them to fix it and all they did was make it so it would automatically turn off at 90C. I sent it off again and they reduced the threshold to 85C. They did nothing at all to actually fix it, it meant I couldn't play games on it even with a cooling pad. After a couple of years, I couldn't even run Windows without it overheating and shutting down.

I have a powerful laptop at the moment for my computing studies work - 860m, i7 quad core, 16gb RAM, 480GB SSD however my next laptop will defiantly be one with a external GPU support as that finally seems the best of both worlds as everything can be plugged into the external GPU - mouse keyboard, controller, HDMI to monitor etc. Nice portbale laptop and decent desktop GPU should be good enough!

That is the DK2, the CV1 rift specs are a 970 gtx or 290 at least. 980m is actually slower than a desktop 970.

25 Jan 16 #59
This does throttle quite badly it also gets very hot. The PSU on the one I had would become so hot you could barely touch it. The screen is also not very nice it is very grainy and a low quality TN panel. Although this is a 980m I would tbh look for a something better mine was returned.

Yeah, customisation options are there and the build quality is sound. Skylake and an 8GB GTX 980M and DDR4? Nice.

25 Jan 16 #56
On a side note you can customise that one a bit. Dropping the RAM down to 8gb and having a 1tb spinner with a 120gb SSD instead of a 2tb and 256gb brings it down to £1481 if your budget is tight.

You're paying for the portability, that insanely beautiful and small bezel and some crazy battery time. Screen is also amazing on that thing.

I think these 17" monsters are a bit of weird ground. Bit heavy (and probably poor battery life assuming its not horribly throttled without the plug in as well) to be carrying about. But I suppose someone moves about alot, in the sense of, they spend relatively little time in their home - they visit a partner or change locations based on where they're working etc.

From a personal example, I'm likely going to have to split living times between two different towns come next year in Uni and something like this is at least somewhat portable, more so than a beastly desktop. Though those situations are few and far between, and I personally believe a laptop should at least be somewhat portable regardless (like that £800 dell posted not long ago). Each to their own though. Everyone's entitled to their own views :stuck_out_tongue:

Not a bad deal at all for spec 980M good enough for OR could do with a faster processor but at this price impossible atm. However anyone who has a decent laptop bar the graphics card maybe wait for the external graphics card to become available and save some money

It's a pretty poor brand but... you won't find that spec for near that price anywhere else. On that point I'd accept some weaker build quality etc and enjoy what it's capable of running.

I've been looking for a new laptop over the past week or so and as commented previously this was the price I was considering for a 970m setup, in fact I'd looked at some up to £1,500.

This seems like an absolute bargain especially as it has the 980M. My concerns are around the comments above in relation to Issues and also the risk of the processor bottlenecking the GPU.

Does anyone have any experience of this laptop? Is it really a good buy?

Probably, best to upgrade (to activate Windows 10) then perform a fresh install from removable media. Should eliminate any software conflicts.

But, it is possible to buy both... I still have my gaming pc and laptop for when I'm not at home and still want to do other things on my laptop, not just games but things like CAD which require a lot of power, so I don't see why that is weird.

I have the MSi GS60 6QE (1080p), 4k pointless on 15", This laptop is really nice, the only things I don't like are the speakers (I bought a portable Bluetooth though so easily fixed) and the fans can get noisy (doesn't really bother me but It will others), but really that is to be expected in such a thin lightweight laptop and I think there is a 3rd party piece of software that you can make them quieter or off when idle and honestly the 970m is really good I didn't think it would be as I always want the best GPU. The msi also has a skylake CPU so...

I would get the msi over this just for the portability and it will still have higher resale value in a few years than this due to the size. Feel free to ask any other questions.

I am not sure why people buy performance laptop but I will tell you why I bought one as opposed to a desktop - I rent in London and usually move to a different place every few months. Also - believe it or not - the places I live in NEVER have enough space for a good sized desk (required for a desktop).

This said, I will most likely go for a desktop once I manage to buy a house/apartment.

This is a cracking price! I got an XMG P505 (Clevo P651SE barebones) with a GTX970m GPU for nearly £1100 in May last year. The GTX 980m is quite a bit faster.

I challenge you to build a PC with the same performance as this laptop (you need an i5 CPU and a GTX 960/R9 280x GPU), FHD Monitor, keyboard, wi-fi, bluetooth, webcam, speakers, Windows licence and also buy a Chromebook for this price. Also - there have been attempts at incorporating external GPUs in notebooks (see Razer Stealth) but the current solutions are just too expensive to be feasible really.

Yes 970M is minimum requirement but your better off having 980M it will last longer in terms of in need of upgrade as regards what unit do I recommend. Personally none atm would like to wait till the OR is shipped out or available to order before and seeing if prices come down

Have been contemplating on a desktop but do no want to be stuck against a wall again. Yes desks can be brought now with clamps to hold a monitor or tv in place but not willing to pay extra for one of them.. Mind you in after saying that your gonna have to have your laptop set up against a wall in order for the space required for OR why didn't I just agree with you in the 1st place

You may get one of the new laptops that have an add on module that contains a desktop gpu, razer are releasing one.
