Apps are limited? Ha, ha! There's got to be billions of windows .exe programs available.

This is a full windows operating system, runs anything a PC can (subject to hardware limitations). It even comes with a year of Office 365, the full blown productivity suite used by most businesses and educational establishments.

Apps are limited? What a joke.

You didn't try hard enough to find a solution .

1. Set tablet mode as default
2. If you want to use the desktop, install touch mouse pointer http://www.lovesummertrue.com/touchmousepointer/en-us/
3. If you still aren't happy, increase the scaling to 125%

8" screen size is fine for Windows 10

Nice, bought one today from the Halstead branch. Bargain!

Had the 10 before on the cash back deal and regret selling it after I had finished using out to test windows 10 (for a profit though).

Will be keeping hold of this one!

the reason that app is limited is because u can ONLY install window app and there isn't much app compare to play and istore. and no u can't install anything like pc. mictosoft lock it down to just install the win app. u will need a pro win on tablet in order to run software like on pc. however most of the tablet are running RT.

I've got 2 of these, absolutely identical in use and software installed, yet one upgraded to windows 10 with only one minor issue and works a dream, the other is stuck with 50% of the functionality not working, I've not had time to play around and get it working, but seriously tempted to flash it back to the factory install level and sell.

absolute joke of a company. ordered relatively early on with some add-ons to take the price up to £60. Had the same email and text saying out of stock so just rang and they won't substitute it free. next tablet up is £100, told them no. Now because they've removed the linx that takes my basket below the £25 minimum spend for delivery, so they won't deliver. What a shower of ****

Another tail of Saintsbury's madness. Arranged C&C for this morning, on my way there, not really expecting to get one, when I received the text as others have saying out of stock no substitute act, oh well saved £40 I think. Hour and a half later I get a call to say I'm late for my collection, yes we have your order for a tablet. Collected, not sealed and office activation has expired. Fishy.....????

Just wanted to say, thanks. Ordered it on Sunday using the voucher code which reduced it to £40.00 had to pay a £1.00 delivery charge and Sainsbury delivered it last night...... only because they had obviously ran out they upgraded it to the windows 10 version with double the ram!

Really pleased with the unit, no lag, lots of ports which are ideal for someone like myself who hasn't embraced the cloud like I should have.

Can't believe it for £41.00!

Well done Sainsbury and you fellow posters

Thank you for shopping with Sainsbury's Online.

We can see that you recently placed a Click & Collect order for the Linx 8" 32GB Windows 8.1 Tablet at half Price: was £100.00 to £50.00. We are sorry to inform you that due to the popularity of this item, we have run out of stock, which means that it's unlikely we'll be able to supply this product.

As there are no substitutes within the price range your order will be delivered minus the tablet.

We're sorry that you've missed out on this occasion and aim to continue to present you various products at competitive prices online.

Kind regards

Ordered on Saturday morning for Monday evening delivery. Driver showed up with the other "add-on" stuff and obviously without the tablet. Told the guy to take everything back as the only reason I ordered those were to make up the total £60. He was quite alright and kept apologizing.

I did though call customer service and told them I'd like to make a complaint. Got put through to some sort of manager and explained to him what had happened. He said these orders relied on local stocks so in my area there was none available hence other people from other parts of the country ordered way after I did received theirs but I don't get mine. Was given two e-vouchers, one for £50 and another for £18. He suggested these may be restocked later but most likely at the original price of £100 so the vouchers would ensure I don't pay more than what I had to initially.

Overall, not impressed about how their stupid system works. Never expected such a big retailer can't even manage their stock information properly and inform customers promptly. That is just ridiculous how this had happened. However, the solution got offered was good enough to sort of make me a happy bunny. Have to say, didn't expect that much of good will gesture. Yet, if I could choose, I'd rather getting my tablet for £40 than getting the £68 voucher.

Ordered mine at the weekend (along with a few bits of shopping so I would get the £18 off) for delivery at 11am today. Got a phone call at 9 oclock to say he'd just noticed there was a tablet in the order and he had wondered if anyone had let me know they had none in stock. I told him they hadnt so he asked me if I wanted to cancel the whole order or just have the bit of shopping delivered. I cancelled and he said Id get a refund within 3 or 4 days. He was ok about it though. Funny thing is, when I ordered this, it did cross my mind whether this was a bit of a bait and switch to get you to order some other stuff but then thought, nah, it's Sainsburys:-) Really gutted, was looking forward to it. The reviews looked really good for a cheapo. Think this should maybe be marked as Expired now (if it hasnt already). Ive just checked their site and it is saying Product not available.

You can activate the subscription on another device, or even sell/gift the subscription to someone else by following the instructions below.

1) Run Office for the first time, it should take you to an activation webpage.

2) DO NOT SIGN IN. Copy the web address, you should see 5 sets of 5 capitalised alpha numerals in a string of 5, similar to the one below

XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX-XXXXX

3) THATS IT! Thats the code you'll need to activate on another device!

I'd recommend against that. The Linx 8 is very picky about the drivers and you might struggle to get things like the webcam working again.

If you want a working tablet then I'd suggest you simply run disk cleanup, else you'll be putting in a few hours trying to get everything working correctly again.

The comments on here are so funny. Clearly the clued up IT guys know the capability of this tablet and some are here to ruin it. I am on the technical side and given the tablet is only £50, it's a fantastic piece of kit, I bought the linx 8 earlier, will upgrade to w10 first then wipe to a clean w10 using the media creation tool. I have a pc, laptop, mac etc and I think this linx is great for basic things like surfing the net, youtube, office programs etc. It's only 50 and it's a convenient toy to have around the house. If it's gaming you want, intense photoshop editing, big excel files etc then this is not for you. There's so much you can do with a windows tablet. I bought mine from ilford, they had 2 or 3 left, the first one I got looked opened as the screen protector was bubbly. I asked for a sealed one but was told all of the linx 8 are not sealed. The staff gave me a different one and this time it looks brand new so I suspect some may be returned or opened.

At first you'll find that it's uses up a lot of space, but that's only because it gives you the option to roll back to Windows 8.1 within 30 days. After them 30 days it'll clean things up and you'll get all of your space back. If you don't want to wait the 30 days then you can force the clean up right away by running disk cleanup.

You don't get upgraded to Windows 10 Pro with the Linx 8.

In my screenshot it shows Windows 10 Pro because I had a spare Windows 8.1 Pro key that I'd applied a few months before Windows 10 was released to the public. That's why I got Windows 10 Pro instead of Windows 10 Home.

Plenty left in North Tyneside, Northumberland Park. Both this and the 10 inch. Price was marked as £75 took it to the till and came up as £100. Got a manager to question the price and it was because the till operator had done a price check on the till and no (50%) discount was removed as the tills won't apparently do this on an enquiry.

Being honest wish I'd never update to Win10, Win8 was actually more use friendly on this (IMO).

Interesting comment that? .. as the Linx 10 at Sainsbury's BLATANTLY comes as 'Sealed!', but the Linx 8 at Sainsbury's does NOT!, hmmmmmmmmm (I queried Sainsbury's 2 days ago on this, & none of the Staff could answer me anything ..... )

Comes with alllllll the respective 'stuffs' though? .. though I'm NOT so sure as to if the Sainsbury's Entertainment £5 Code Coupon that's present in their Linx 10 has been wittled away in their Linx 8? (on account that Linx 10 is 'Sealed' & comes with it, but Linx 8 is 'NOT Sealed' & comes with nowt!, so ..... )

May be worth anyone who's actually purchased this to reclarify as to whether or not your like 'missing stuffs' from within it?, or something?. :-)

Enough people complained about the option being missing in Windows 8, so Microsoft added it to Windows 10. There's no way to have the same feature in Windows 8.

Windows 10 behaves more like Windows 7 in that you've got a start menu instead of a start screen. You can switch in and out of tablet mode at a push of a button though

Some people prefer Windows 8 and some prefer Windows 10. I prefer Windows 10 as it works better for how I use the device. I've not run into any performance issues since upgrading either.

Quick question which hopefully someone can answer.....I purchased this tablet last week (at a higher price - £75 - in Sainsburys). Once I got it home I suspected it had been purchased and returned. Anyway, question is the licence key for Office 365. Was it printed on a separate piece of paper in the box? In my experience it normally is. And if so, somebody nicked mine!

Hardware is Hardware, when it comes to Tablets/Phones,, etc (especially stuffs of this ilk?), 'cheap prices' are NOT necessarily guaranteed between Stores from the same Retailer?.

I found this out to my peril via another Sainsbury's Tablet Deal I came across myself via here last year! .. both the size AND price of the Tablet in question were BOTH different from that of what the OP themselves mentioned they themselves bought their very own for only days before!, so .....

Best best is 'ask' them?, &/or get it scanned basically?. :-)

For some reason my one didnt charge to 100% , it just got stuck at 85%-86% , so i took it back and they didnt have anymore in stock , however they did have the Linx 810 Leather which seems to have the Windows 10 pre installed and it has a gray leather back , so they let me have the 810 Leather with £20 off as a good will gesture as this is my 3rd trip to the store ..

Ill see how this one goes.

Plus it has a screen protector already pre installed.

Kodi comes with a theme called Re-Touched that you can switch to.

To hide the mouse pointer go to "C:\Program Files\Kodi\addons\skin.re-touched\16x9\" and copy Pointer.xml to your desktop. Edit the file so that every line containing "texture" is removed and then just save it and place it back at it's original location. Obviously you'll want to overwrite the original file for it to work.

I had a spare Windows 8.1 Pro key so I qualified for Windows 10 Pro instead. Everyone else will get Windows 10 Home.

I don't find it too bad. Edge will be great when it finally gets extension support.

Everyone should enable the option for the keyboard to be displayed when you need to enter text. By default it's set to off for some reason.

Just to address the whole "1GB RAM = lmfao" from clueless people like EazyDuz.

https://i.imgur.com/qvFHcml.png

• Chrome has 4 tabs open and 2 active extensions (uBlock Origin and HTTPS Everywhere)
• Candy Crush Saga is running in the background
• The Windows 10 messaging app is in use

Windows 10 on the Linx 8 with just it's 1GB of RAM works fine. Memory is handled well and there is no noticeable lag unless you're doing something ridiculous like trying to render a video.

If it still looks like a lot of memory is being used then you need to understand that Windows now keeps applications in RAM for longer and it uses compression to make it more efficient. It'll then offload anything that's too large to the paging file, but if your eMMC is fast enough then you shouldn't notice any slowdown. And keep in mind that eMMC is typically much faster than a traditional hard drive.

Microsoft changed the update to use an external drive (or sd card) for small capacity devices, it fails first then you click "FIX" and you get a chance to choose an external drive to add more storage for the update.

Hey, can anyone comment on battery life and charging of this device? Cheers
Fleabum to aeroi
5 Jan 16 #180
These observations are based upon one I had last year (not sure if the current one is same revision).

Battery life is on the mediocre side compared to other devices I have used. Charging on these is dire as they use the mini USB socket, which means you can not use any other USB device at the same time. (You can get multi split OTG cables that let you charge at the same time but they are very hit and miss to which ones work.)

When I charge this of a 2A in car charger, it barley manages to gain charge while while gaming or streaming media content.

But all that aside, for £50 its an awesome tablet with a very good quality screen, and quite responsive for what it is.

My best 2 tips for the linx 8:
Stick macrium reflect free on it to back everything up (acronis won't work). Make a full backup before trying the windows 10 upgrade - mine was fine, but I've read a few stories of failures and re-installing 8.1 is a PITA.

Buy one of these to charge while using the usb port:
http://www.aliexpress.com/item/Universal-usb-OTG-Charger-HUB-cable-for-Tablet-PC-thinkpad-8-X98-M80ta-WT-8-Miix2/2038609573.html?&afftype=KLK&sk=EmYFU37uf

Disclaimer - the site says this is a new 2015 version. I have the older spec equivalent which works flawlessly - but it says it works with the dell venue 8, which seems to have identical charging behaviour.

Battery life isn't great, about what you'd expect for a cheap tablet. If I get 5 hours use I'm surprised. Mine's mostly plugged in to something though.

Actually 3rd tip would be to take a look at linxtablet.co.uk - loads of info there.

So happy with this! I bought a Linx Vision last week from Argos in the hopes of having a handheld all-in-one device for games, emulation, streaming etc, but it was bad beyond belief. Too heavy to be comfortable, and a really awkward button placement that made my hands ache after use. So I bought an iPega 9023 in preparation for getting something a bit more suitable. Seems to work really well with the Linx 8 so far! Thanks OP

I suspect you have zero experience in hacking, and no I don't mean your typical scriptkiddie, malware, or social engineering infection techniques, I mean penetration, leak and hardened protection technologies. I am sure you know little about buffer overflow, malformed memory register or code based MITM attacks.

Thread after thread you try to spread incorrect information. You favourite seems to be always banging on about Chrome and multiple tabs and problems with 1GB RAM on Windows tablets(at least you dropped the multiple other applications this time).

The problem isn't the tablet, its what the users expectations are, I wouldn't buy a plane and expect to fly to Mars, maybe you would. Turning your first analogy round, "1GB RAM = lmfao, abs hurt from the laughter.
Moped engine in a Ferrari body". Your the one buying the Moped and expecting to get Ferrari performance.

Your entitled to your opinion as are we all, but please, just give up with bashing 1GB Windows tablets, you were proven wrong on many another thread on the same issue, its about time you accept it instead of posting the same rubbish on every Windows tablet thread.

(and don't try to engage in recourse this will be my one and only post to you on this thread, I don't like to feed the trolls, but I do enjoy slapping them down)

This is a fantastic deal for an adequate tablet for the majority of users. OP, here have some heat.

Steam streaming works great, though I've seen people on the linxtablets forum saying the connection is rather glitchy/you have to be in the same room to get Xbox One streaming to work.

This user (and some comments from others) suggest that it works fine, though (Linx 8 ) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Q2im0nSFcCM

(Linx 10) https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BqbRXcVY6Is

The Linx Vision is a newer Linx tablet (with joypads) made with Xbox/Steam streaming in mind.

Well the reason I couldn't is because I don't own an xbox one.

You could though assuming you own one  Requires you to upgrade to windows 10 of course.

I've had this tablet for over a year now. It's decent, however I've not really used it much. I also managed to get it for £50. I'd recommend getting a wireless keyboard and track pad, as both Windows 8 and 10 are not really tablet friendly.

Did you also try to install Fallout 4 on it? The 1GB ram's unsuitability for running such an integral part of the Windows experience renders these tablets utterly useless :smirk:

The (Technika) Connect 7 (Linx 7 clone) was around this price before Xmas (£30-ish). If I had to choose, I'd go for the 10", though 8", naturally will be a bit more usable than 7".

I told you this before, but you really need to get with the times. Windows's memory management has changed a lot since Windows XP. These tablets use OS compression and memory compression and that makes the OS look like it's using a lot of memory, but it's actually just compressing data and holding it in RAM instead of putting it all into the paging file.

http://arstechnica.com/information-technology/2015/03/windows-10-shaves-off-gigabytes-with-selective-system-file-compression/

https://tweakhound.com/2015/08/20/windows-10-memory-compression/

http://lifehacker.com/why-is-windows-10s-system-process-using-so-much-ram-1725076206

Windows 8 and 10 are designed to support devices such as these tablets. They'll work just fine on 1GB of RAM, but of course more is always better. You're discrediting all 1GB Windows tablets based on outdated information though. That plus you compare them with Android tablets, even though they're well known to use memory in a totally different way than Windows does.

If you actually owned a Windows tablet then you should know that it works fine with 1GB of RAM. It does come down to the quality of the RAM and the eMMC though, which in the Linx 8 are very good. For example, I can easily have 12+ tabs open in Chrome while listening to music and chatting via Skype.

The only niggle with this tablet is that after upgrading it to Windows 10 you may need a .REG file to correct the screen orientation and you may need to tell Windows to revert the webcam driver as it'll try to update it to the wrong one.

EasyDuz, I've seen you comment in the same vein on many Linx threads now - didn't you end up buying a Linx 10? And don't you remember the days when having a desktop PC with 1GB or RAM was a thing of wonder?
preecey
4 Jan 16 #69
My Tesco Connect 7" tablet (Linx clone) runs just fine with 1GB. Remember, it's not just the RAM that counts, it's the speed of the storage medium. eMMC is a lot faster than traditional spinning hard drives.

A laptop with just 1GB of RAM and a traditional HDD will be awful, and I'd agree with you in that scenario. But these tablets work just fine thanks to the speedy solid state chip. Heck, my Connect tablet even boots up and runs faster than my Lenovo laptop with 8GB of RAM and a Core i5 processor! (Of course, my Lenovo will wipe the floor when it comes to intensive tasks such as photo editing though.)
EazyDuz
4 Jan 16 #68
I just said trust me from experience, it IS backed up. I had an Acer 8 inch windows 8.1 tablet with 1GB RAM and it crawled doing word processing with a few tabs open in Chrome.
I guess a lot depends on how quickly you can navigate an OS, if you are an older person you probably use it much, much slower than someone who knows what they're doing, giving the illusion that the tablet is fast, when in actual fact its just having loads of time to process because the user is quite slow.

I have 2 Windows tablets, a Dell and this one (bought for my son last year). I also have a desktop and 2 other laptops, and for general browsing and non-development work, the tablets with 1GB RAM perform very well.
So, please don't make off the mark comments with nothing to back it up. XP was over a decade ago, things have moved on.
EazyDuz
4 Jan 16 #65
The Chinese tablet had good specs for the price, at the time. But trust me from experience, 1GB for a full Windows OS is just not going to cut it. 1GB couldnt comfortably run the much less resource hungry windows XP.

No idea. I've had my eye on a few new-ish Cherry Trails such as the Teclast Pro X98 and the more recent Chuwi Hi10 but the common problem seems to be overheating issues. Some early Hi10s shipped with 32-bit Windows 10 versus 64-bit of the newer ones which has annoyed many customers.

The ASUS T100HA is another new-ish one, but this seems to be swamped with touchscreen problems (or "ghost touching"). http://www.amazon.fr/dp/B0105LEAGI/ (for some reason, the 4GB RAM version isn't available in the UK).

Are Intel subsidising Cherry Trails like they do with Bay Trails? If not it might explain manufacturers reluctance to push the next gen models...

Be aware, too, that Sainsburys sell a "budget" version of the Linx 10 (or newer 1010) called the "Linx Light" (otherwise known as the 1010L), which has 16GB of storage versus the usual 32GB (seems to be causing problems for some doing Windows Updates - particularly the recent big Windows 10 update, 10240). http://www.linxtablet.co.uk/viewtopic.php?f=61&t=1446

There's quite a few moaning on Amazon reviews about the Windows Store not having enough apps and returning their Linx for that reason (!) but c'mon, which tablet OS can compete with the wide, wide world of Windows programs?

Having a full Windows tablet is incredible and would never go back to Android. Full Windows wouldn't work on a smaller phone format, and the app store is crap, so I will stay with Android on my phones

£50 is a great price for a new Linx 8, but surprised there aren't more "next generation" Cherry Trails out in the UK by now. I've had my Linx 10 over a year and absolutely love it.

My main sticking point versus Android tablets was the woeful lack of ebook reader apps in the Windows Store as I have GBs of books. Still haven't found one but I use (desktop) Calibre instead. Took me a while to get used to it but I've grown to like it. http://calibre-ebook.com/download_windows

I was in a hurry and I snapped a piccie and posted whilst instore.
When I got home, my neighbours car was stuck on his front lawn (don't ask) and I spent an hour helping him extricate it (and ended up covered in mud)
After that I had to work and I've been on the phone all afternoon.

But the 'Office' in Windows 10 you speak of, is that the former 'generic' 60 Day-Trail Version of the FULL Office Packages of many moons gone by? (eg. Office Office 2000, Office XP, Office 2003, Office 2007, etc, etc?), or ..... lol.

Thanx. :-)

4 Jan 16 #34
How do this compare with nexus 7 32gb 2nd gen
Thanks
amour3k to Brand new
4 Jan 16 #38
This be a wholllllllllle DIFFERENT 'Animal'? .. the Nexus you speak of has a purely 'Android-Engine', whereas the OP's Deal has a 'Windows-Engine'?, so first & formost, that for a start is pre-dominantly the MAIN 'differences' between these 2 'Beasts' lol. :-)

So with that in mind the 'Hardware' that basically then fires them to their 'fullest' (so to speak?) would then reflect that?.

Generally speaking, the Android Platform from the off (from what I've personally observed anyway?) has a much lower Hardware Requirement 'Footprint' to that of what I've observed of similar equivalents of that of pre-dominantly Windows Based Platforms?.

So with one of the rarer exceptions on ANYTHING 'Nexus' (Tablet, Phone, etc?), Windows Tablets, Phones etc SHOULD in theory outperform that of its Android equivalents? (thats the 'theory' anyway?), but of late with more Hardware Manufacturers & the like all jumping ship to the freely available Android OS the opposite is fast now proving to be the case a bit now? (eg. Lenovo making both Android Tablets & Windows Tablets, Acer making both Android & Windows Tablets, & ..... doesn't help you none, huh?, lol)

I think the real one for you is 'Andorid'?, or 'Windows'?, which one are u, &/or which one do u think you'd be more comfortable with, etc?, your choices beyond that could then prove itself to be second nature?.

Hopefully this helps a wee little with your initial question?, hehehe. :-)
