Not sure if this one is, but LG do some that are not as deep if you have a smaller kitchen or particular spot you want to shoehorn it into. My LG has been good and quiet.

LG's beltless motor makes their machines even quieter than the Samsung, plus it's got a longer warranty too! Grrr

Recently bought the LG F14U1JBS2 still awaiting delivery but was tempted by the steam function (Either though it probably is a little gimmicky) made sure I chose something with 5 year warranty. The nice thing with LG is labour in included I read a few cheeky reviews of people getting 2 year warranty but then being billed £60 per hour

Both are not newcomers. Had my LG direct drive for almost 10 years, and they were not new 10 years ago.
In Asia LG and Samsung washing machines have been popular since the mid 90's.

Never owned an LG one, but Samsungs white goods are very very good. We've owned Fridge/Freezers and washing machines from them and they've lasted much longer than Hoover/Hotpoint/Indesit.

I would definitely recommend getting a 5 year warranty. Our LG drum bearing went and it was just outside the 2 year warranty, it was scrapped.

We also had a couple of minor problems with it in the first 12 months requiring an engineer visit.

7 Jan 16 1 #14
+1 for not Hotpoint, the older ones seem to last forever (got one in garage that's never had any work done to it) but our other one that's just over 5 years old is on it's 2nd set of (drum?) bearings. And now sounding like it needs yet another new set, last time the repair was about £100.

Is Direct Drive a lot better then?

Bought my first LG washer in 2003.

Still working strong up until July 2015, reluctantly had to give this away due to having a new kitchen refit which included appliances.

Subsequently bought 2x further LG washers in years 2005 & 2006 for rental property's - Still going strong.

Bought this last year for £360. Good washing machine - no complaints. The 20 min short cycle wash is perfect for the odd few items. Can also download wash cycles and diagnose faults via bluetooth.

The only downside i would say is that there's not alot of information on the different wash cycles and a large load could well take 2-3hours if you dont know what you're doing. There is a biit oif initial faffing around before you get use to it.

The most convincing argument for me are people's voices(including my friends) who in vast majority are very happy with their LG washing machines

Pibpob, Pavel has posted a 'good' deal - all things considered, and he's mistakenly taken your comments as an attack on his deal - which they most definitely are NOT.

Your posts are nothing more than informative - and well-sourced.

The 'in your face fact' that all users of modern washing machines are experiencing is that newer machines aren't lasting as long as older machines - and it's happening with all brands - most especially those using sealed drum technology.

Nevertheless, in a sea of 'built to fail' machines, this LG could reasonably be expected to be one of the 'better' ones(?).

7 Jan 16 #35
You're either accidentally or deliberately missing the point. It is nothing to do with a particular manufacturer or this machine; it's the principle of using a direct drive motor which was asked about. Check what you quoted. You have provided no rebuttal to the sound engineering explanations in that article, your only objection being a conspiracy theory about wanting to do down a particular manufacturer. Even if that is true, it doesn't make any difference to the points made in the article. So you have provided no evidence that direct drive is any more than a gimmick.

Just because I'm not with you doesn't mean I'm against you. I'm not saying these machines are any worse than any other, I'm saying that the direct drive motor is nothing more than a gimmick and won't mean that they perform any better or more reliably than any other machine. So choose them on the other parameters you have rightly pointed out, not the "direct drive".
yrreb88
7 Jan 16 #37
You'd struggle to find a modern machine that isn't cold fill tbh.
pibpob
7 Jan 16 #38
Yes, and for good reason. Modern machines and detergents use lower temperatures and less water. A hot fill machine will have to err on the side of using more cold as it doesn't know the incoming temperatures. Drawing water from a tank results in wasted hot water in the pipes between the tank and the machine.

My machine on a 30 degree wash (everything except whites) runs its 2kW heater for about 5 minutes: < 3p of electricity.
king132
7 Jan 16 #39
You can select up to 40 degrees for the short 20 min cycle.
king132
7 Jan 16 1 #40
On my old machine you preset the wash cycle - it tells you how long it takes and the load makes no difference.

On this machine there's no initial information on how long it takes until you start the cycle and the washing machine works out the load...

My LG direct drive is now about 12 years old.
Absolutely no problem whatsover. The door hinge is now getting a little sloppy, but that's the only indication of its age - apart from being unusually deep, front-to-back, with the old-style direct drive.
The only fuss has been the water inlet filter getting bunged up and restricting flow into the machine. But that isn't the machine's fault and I was able to easily deal with it myself.

Yes, I would recommend LG Direct Drives, and I hope they are still making them so I can get a replacement when mine dies - but hopefully not for another 20 years!

The trick with the modern washers is to try to fill them as much as possible, then to run them with the timer on eco, so the cycle is finished as you get up. This way it can run a longer more energy efficient wash and still be ready at the most convenient time.
The other issue is that no one seems to make a laundry basket big enough for modern washers, and you'll probably need another washing line if you're coming from a 5Kg Machine !

We had one the 11kg LG machines that lasted us 5yrs before it went pop. Excellent machine while it worked. It was beyond economical repair. Make sure you get a 5yr warranty/cover. Local independent and reputable repairman said that both Samsung and LG were great machines while they lasted (and they tend to last) but are costly and a pain to get parts etc for. LG also tend to outsource their repair service, so service is mixed. Ended up with a Miele, but obviously paid a lot more.

Another vote for LG Direct Drive washing machines.
Ours is 10 years old and not had an ounce of trouble with it apart from having to empty dog hairs and scum out of the lower screw filter.
A lot quieter than previous machines we've owned and very smooth.
Only niggle we had was the on/off button isn't recessed and if someone reaches forward to get something out of the cupboard above and leans against the button it switches off and starts at the beginning again when you turn it back on. Very annoying if you are 90 minutes into a wash cycle.
Still, would definitely buy another one when this one dies.

At this time neither of these machines have yet been fully tested, rated and reviewed by any organisations we might consider reliable.

What we do have is knowledge of many of their 'newer' machines, and in this area Samsung are doing much better than every other brand.

LG are good, but with the extremely limited info available there's a good chance you're probably sitting with the better machine between the two.

Which are still the best of a bad bunch when it comes to reliable information on goods.
How which test; http://www.which.co.uk/reviews/washing-machines/article/how-we-test-washing-machines

Many agencies are heavily involved in the removal of negative reviews (search/google/yahoo/duckduckgo etc) so much that the consumer can no longer trust reviews to give a true guide.

As for washing machines, newer designs (especially incorporating sealed drum technology) means vastly different machines from those that formerly lasted years - in fact it's led to industry commentators accusing manufacturers of designing 'built to fail' machines.

It's becoming increasingly common now to hear of formerly long-lasting branded machines being scrapped after two - three years due to being uneconomical to repair - largely due to sealed drum technology.

Ultimately, the best advice is whatever you choose to buy try to get a good long lasting (preferably at least five years in the case of washing machines) guarantee.

The problem is it's not just LG - there's all sorts of nonsense shrouding the industry at the moment and it's all geared at confusing the consumer for the purpose of increasing sales.

Generally speaking though it has to be said that LG machines tend to be above average - but do consider that the 'average' has dropped drastically over the last 10 -15 years.
Back then machines often lasted way beyond 10 years whereas todays' machines are highly unlikely to last as long as 7 years - much more than half of them aren't expected to last more than 2 - 3 years.

Actually, my read of that article says: Similar vibration, similar reliability - but did concede direct drive is quieter. You can get induction motors but they are more expensive than LGs direct drive. If you want quiet, a reliable OEM, and 5 year warranty this seems like a good deal despite a little cold water from the article. It was a net positive for direct drive from my reading.

8 Jan 16 #85
No, the article says that they are only quieter than conventional machines without induction motors. The positive spin has been added by you in your claim that direct drive machines are cheaper than belt-driven machines with induction motors. I would be very interested to know from someone with knowledge of the current market in washing machines in general if this is actually true. Considering the amount of raw material in the large, many-pole slow speed direct drive motor, and the far larger number of belt-driven machines leading to economies of scale in both motors and drive electronics, I have my doubts.
sallekmo
8 Jan 16 #86
There is also a difference between warranty and guarantee you can find out by searching online

The belt doesn't make the noise. The brushes in motors in cheap washing machines make the noise. Do not be deceived by the marketing lies that these are quieter than any other sort of washing machine.
pibpob
8 Jan 16 #88
Nope. Sorry to burst your bubble of a convenient conspiracy theory. I have no connection with any washing machine company. I simply dislike people being deceived by myths generated by marketing.

Remember, LG is trying to claim that everyone else's DISHWASHERS contain belts and pulleys. That's an outright lie.

Just a reminder for people considering direct drive machines - be sure to place it on a solid (preferably concrete) floor.

We had an LG some years ago and it was an excellent machine, but we had to send it back as it constantly danced out into the middle of the kitchen floor.
The engineers told us our suspended joist flooring was the cause of the problem; when we contacted LG they told us the machine had to be on solid floors only and that the seller should have told us.

I only mention it here as it's important and I don't see it mentioned anywhere else.

MY last washer was LG 7kg, WD1243FH £288 Tempo going bust.
Lasted 12 years(12/2001->4/2014
Had not noticed the door seal had split(mainly around the door catch) and had been like that for some time, one day noticed a tiny bit of water where it should not be, the seal was gone more than 40% in a few places

Still washed well and the only other issue was the display/button board was playing up bit with not all adjustments working/lighting. Was surprised we had not had more water everywhere.
Ended up that getting spares was not easy, the door seal was discontinued and could not find a replacement anywhere.
Control boards were silly prices.

If you have a machine around 10 years have a good feel of the seals and if everything else is fine consider getting a spare.

( I think I read somewhere that they can stop supporting at 10 years)

Replaces with Bosch
We are playing with the wash cycles, finding that the long eco washes are working better than trying to speed things up

Does this machine weigh the clothes and adjust the washing time and wated used accordingly same as the Samsung Ecobubble (also on offer http://www.hotukdeals.com/search?action=search&keywords=samsung+washing+machine)? I bought Samsung but not delivered yet. Considering changing. FYI, One thing I noticed Samsung doesn't have a delicate cycle whilst LG does. Certainly agree there is an awful lot of marketing waffle out there, but dishwashers with a belt/motor - that`s something else. The fleet (don`t ask) currently consists of
LG DD (£400 High-end made in Korea) - 10 years old - good as new, save for door seal retainer gone rusty.
LG DD (£200 Low-end made in China) - 4 years old - too light and dances about, not impressed, going rusty and getting noisier
Panasonic DD (£300 Mid-range made in china) 5 years old - Built like a tank and flawless (doesn`t use enough water according to me)
2 x Beko (£160 Mid-range, Turkey) both 4 years old (5 year P&L warranty) - The most abused, also flawless, although noisy (not DD). These machines wash the best according to us as they use the most water.
Conclusion - Doesn`t really matter these days what brand you buy (exc. Indesit & Hotpoint obviously). They`re all designed to do 500 - 1000 cycles anyway, so a good washing Beko with 5 year P&L warranty is the way to go and recycle them the first time they conk out out of warranty. Hugely wasteful, but its that or buy a Miele or an Ebac. I`ll try the Ebac next time, i`m curious. Sad that, innit?

The quote you so helpfully provided says that there is any cost advantage to a direct drive motor compared with a belted machine fitted with an induction motor (not sure why it calls it DC but never mind). In other words, exactly what I have been saying all along. You seem to be terribly confused as you're comparing apples with oranges here.

As I said all along: direct drive is a gimmick.

And yet you're using the bad language and bringing in the personal attacks? I was merely presenting the arguments as I saw them. I backed up my claim with a convincing article you failed to find fault with.

You simply cannot make valid comparisons based on brand between a sample of one, without even knowing the model number!
Oh I am sorry sir is my opinion not valid?

So if you bought something that was crap, would you not mention it on these forums.....
Mention it, sure, but be aware of stereotyping and jumping to conclusions.

FYI anybody that has ordered this, Parts and labour is two years, not five as suggested by the Currys website:

I very much doubt LG will honour a mistake on the Currys website.

planthead to sallekmo
11 Jan 16 #131
No, but a loud thump!
sallekmo
11 Jan 16 #132
Throughout the whole washing theres no high pitched sound, are you sure? The loud thumps are normally because you probably didnt install the anti moving rubber caps
pibpob
11 Jan 16 #133
High pitched whine is probably the water meter inside it - the pitch will depend on your water pressure and flow rate. Thump is probably water hammer when the valve closes - again, depends on characteristics of water supply.

Someone's review on the currys site says the following:

When you place a cycle on you have absolutely no idea how long it would take . You can get the app for it however we are on iPhone This is not compatible I think this should be stated in the manufacturers report

^I use an iphone, but I found an LG smart diagnosis app on the app store on iOS, so presumably this is the right one? I'm a little concerned about the comment that you have no idea how long the cycle will take though - is this true? Is there no indication on the display prior to setting the washing to go?
sallekmo to jgomez80
12 Jan 16 #144
Theyre lying my friend, when you choose a cycle it tells you exactly how many minutes it would take to finish, and it counts down while doing it, for example on a mix cycle, which means you can put all materials, it says 1.15 which is 1 hour and 15 mins, this shows on the lcd screen, you wont be ddisappointed with this product, even if its not for iphone, i have an android and i prefer to use the options on the actual washing machine, the only different it makes using a phone is you can download more cycles for different materials
pibpob
11 Jan 16 #135
It's the same with all decent washing machines nowadays - the length of the cycle depends on things like how much water the clothes absorb and (on the more expensive ones with a "turbidity sensor") how dirty the water gets. The machine cannot possibly know these things before the cycle starts.
jgomez80 to pibpob
11 Jan 16 #136
Is there a maximum cycle length to go by at least? Had a look at the manual, and it looks like each programme has a cycle length, could the loads actually take longer than stated there? Does it give a prediction once the cycle has started too - and if so, is this basically like an unreliable microsoft blue bar prediction of how long it takes for stuff to copy to your hdd...?
pibpob
11 Jan 16 1 #137
I don't know about this machine but both my washing machine and my dishwasher show the maximum time when you select the program. While in operation, the washing machine helpfully flashes its countdown before it has decided to chop off any time; the dishwasher just jumps down by big lumps.

Although I sympathise with your desire to blame Microsoft for everything, sometimes things cannot be predicted without the expensive Time Machine plugin.
planthead
11 Jan 16 #139
If the cycle appears to long for you, pause it and change, it seems it works most economically, on the cotton large setting, add in turbo mode, and temp to suit, and set as a favourite..
The new machines work on long programs as they include long pauses or soaks, to help with the cleaning, coming from a hot and cold fill Bosch, (20 years old), they seem excessively long, probably best set to run over night using the timer to finish when you get up. it does spin fast so clothes come out very dry, so not too long in the tumble. It also cleans very well on a tiny bit of washing powder.
hwangeruk
12 Jan 16 #140
So why are you replying then? Don't contradict yourself.
. I am not contradicting myself, I am just saying I have no vested interest in the product so don't care for it. And I am not "arguing" I am just quoting your article back to you, which states the facts that you conveniently ignore cos it doesn't suit your little rant. I am sorry the phrase "i don't give a sh*t" offends you, arrrr diddums ( I made no personal attach BTW). As I say, get over it, you got called out as your article doesn't say what you implied it does (a gimmick you said). There is no real difference between direct drive and belt drive, other than direct drive being quieter. Simple as that really. But I am sure you will along in a minute to argue black is white, attempt to take the moral high ground etc. Well done.
pibpob
12 Jan 16 #141
Hurrah! You've finally dropped your silly claim that direct drive machines have a cost advantage over conventional ones with induction motors. Perhaps you've actually understood the article properly now? Progress!

But oh dear... now you're saying they're quieter! Still falling into the same trap you fell into over the cost claim: "...but you can get exactly the same from a conventional induction motor, you don't need to be forced into a direct drive model to have this advantage."

So, direct drive is a gimmick. Back to what I said all along, despite your desperate attempts to provide spurious objections.
pavel76 to pibpob
12 Jan 16 #142
Direct drive machines are quieter - conclusion of this article, so looks like you have problems with understanding simple words but trying to teach others, sad...
PS. "You can get exactly the same from conventional induction motor" really ? For what cost ? £350 like this LG machine ? I don't think so...
pibpob
12 Jan 16 #143
Quote: "...but you can get exactly the same from a conventional induction motor, you don't need to be forced into a direct drive model to have this advantage."
Where's the conclusion that says they are quieter?
Ah - so what you actually meant was "direct drive machines are quieter than those with brushed motors" and you are arguing on cost? Same old.

This is the question I asked earlier but unfortunately no-one answered. I would be very keen to know just how cheap machines with an induction motor go. I do know that my mid-range John Lewis (rebranded Electrolux) machine from several years ago has an induction motor. They are not limited to the most expensive models, and as the price of the more complicated drive circuitry falls, so their price premium will erode.
planthead
12 Jan 16 #145
I think he means, you have no idea how long the cycle will take, until you press start, as the machine then weighs the clothes, then wets them, and calibrates the timing of the cycle, coming from an older machine, where you dial its setting and it says 45 mins, you then press start.. If the LG cycle is too long, you can press pause, and reset it, say from 2 hours to 1 by changing the settings and adding in turbo mode....

There are so many models in LG's range, does anyone know whether this is high, medium or low end?

This washing machine is not 9kg, it is actually an 8kg washing machine. All the 9kg washing machines on there website have a Drum Volume of 67 (litres). Misleading have cancelled my order.
planthead to jen827

Just got ours today... Looks lovely and it runs silently but put on a Cotton Large cycle and it says it'll take 3h 40mins! Our old banger did it in 1h 15min. I'm sure it didn't clean our clothes as well but nearly 4h for a normal wash (for family of 5) is a bit much. Hmmm.
planthead to ben14
14 Jan 16 1 #163
Put on turbo mode, turn the temp to 30 or even 20, set as favourite, the new machines take much longer, due to energy saving, they pause and soak to help with cleaning, it depends how dirty your clothes are, you could just use the fifteen minute wash and add some soda crystals to soften the water, My OH had a fit when it said 3.5 hours for her work stuff!!, I think that they are designed to wash overnight, using cheap rate, so use the timer...

Loving the washing machine. It's whisper quiet and far better than our old Zanussi which we had for over 10 years. If you get past the argument about direct inverter versus belt drive, which is a side issue, what you are getting here is a mid range, generous load, quiet, high spin machine with more programmes than you can shake a stick at, with the option of downloading more through the app for £349. That's pretty awesome. 5 year general warranty from the manufacturer and 10 years on the motor. And it even self diagnoses if anything goes wrong!!! Got ours for £329, because I happened to tell them about the code. They told me it wasn't available any more, but I stood my ground and they said an extra £20 wasn't worth quibbling about so they allowed it!!! Very highly recommended is my opinion

15 Jan 16 #166
Please can a user of this machine tell me if you can do a spin only run at the maximum 1400rpm?

Having downloaded the manual I see there is a "Speed 14" setting (14 minutes I assume?) but the maximum spin speed at that setting is 800rpm, so interested to know if it could be followed by a 1400rpm spin.

The manual does indicate it can do spin only but just wanted to be sure this can be done at the maximum rpm.

Check your loadings for speedy up washes not always a full load.
With this machine you can use a full load on Cotton and it will do it in 90mins, the large cotton is the same load and longer .
USing TURBO is a 1/2 load (pg.23.)

For spin only you just select the spin button.

We have a Bosch and have been experimenting with the washes,
The long washes are doing a better job than the speedy ones.
Not that we have dirty clothes but they come out that bit better
using bio I guess the enzymes will have longer to do their job.

Not that bothered how long it takes the work is loading and emptying and that does not change, if we need it finished a particular time use the delay timer.
