£190 squid for a tablet that'll be slow in about a year after having had its update to kill features in ios xx. This should be around the £120 range. Cold from me... And it's 16gb. Definitely over priced.

Agreed. It's an 8-inch tablet with 1GB of RAM and a 1.3GHz dual-core processor that's been out for over 2 years - it's worth more like £140, especially as there is an iPad Mini 3 out. But of course, you pay for the Apple badge.

I do think iPads function well for their specs however.

I'll stick with my Samsung Galaxy Tab S though (and this is coming from an iPad owner), more power, more flexibility, storage expandable..

apple are still selling these on their site, and offer an optional 2 year warranty. JL are also offering 2 year warranty. It's hard to know what Apple will do, we're all just guessing, but I'd be willing to wager that support for these will continue for 2 years.

Depends what you want it to do? if you want to watch films on it ie DivX, Avi's etc then stay away from Apple, Android will drag and drop movies and play them natively without conversion add in USB on the go, MicroSD, true 16:9 screen ratio/resolution support then they are leagues ahead of Apple on the movie front.
However if you want simplicity then maybe Apple would suit better?

All I want a tablet for mainly is messing around on the Internet on the sofa whilst the missus watches her brollocks on the TV, playing music whilst I'm getting up (which the Playbook is decent for btw - great speakers) and maybe the occasional film on train or something. Tried the HUDL but its ability to charge buggered up within a month.

I got one from the below (paid £160 at the time), yes it's a foreign model but that's only a plug change for a couple of quid on eBay (but you'll have one for when you're abroad). For those concerned about taxes, import processes are covered by the company according to their Ts and Cs so you should have no issues and this has been backed up by many customers on HUKD.

Again, I wouldn't spend more than about £20 on a website like this just to save a few quid. Not worth the agro when something goes wrong with delivery or warranty etc. Also, the charger you bought on eBay to replace the foreign one is probably cheap or counterfeit. eBay is full of rubbish in my opinion.

Meh, I have umpteen tablets (iOS, Windows and android) among them an iPad mini 1 which still performs like it did on day one. It's several years old and used daily. I'd still value it well over £100 in comparison to newer android tablet prices. E.g. I got a Samsung 10.1 note at £160 a year ago and it's so frustratingly slow and laggy I wouldn't say it's worth half of what I paid sadly.

Does that make them a good price? This is a 2 year old tablet totally superseded by the Apple iPad mini 4. Even if you were totally passionate of iOS it is poor value.

As for the current state of play, the laughable prices of the iPad Mini 4 are absurd when you consider the cashback price of the Samsung Galaxy S2 8" tablet which blows it out the water.

Technology wise they are not worth any more than £125.

Just to confirm the iPad Mini 2 is not slow and perfectly acceptable for video playback, browsing web, music and running the office apps, this is what I use mine for whilst on the teain each day. My only area of concern would possibly be the 16GB storage but if you do not intend storing lots of video then it will be OK.

By the way I develop iPhone/iPad apps and have access to nearly all the apple hardware but I own the Mini 2 (couldn't justify the extra cost of the mini 3) iPhone 6s & iWatch. They ALL just work and unlike other hardware platforms no patching or security risks.

I'm not saying its a good price, I got a 64gb one last year at currys £225 ish ordered Xmas eve, that was a good price and hukd rated it highly..
Apple hold heir value I just got an air2 and traded in my £299 (very hukd) iPad3 for £130 at game, that iPad had been used since launch for 5000+ hours so £170 3.4 pence per hour of use, whereas a Samsung tab 2 (possibly 3) android tablet cost me £5 per hour of use, luckily traded it in after 6 months, having used it for 4 hours.. Absolute Rubbish..
Although I believe Samsung latest tablets are getting better
cicobuff
26 Dec 15 1 #47
Yep, considering the display beating and weight and form factor beating Samsung S2 8" tablet is curently only £250 as a rival to the iPad Mini 4 which laughably starts at £320 for 16GB, it makes this price for a 2 year old tablet seem even more absurd if you ask me.
cicobuff
26 Dec 15 1 #48
The 'tab' range are Samsung budget tablets which remain in that sector. I was not even referring to those, I am talking about the 4:3 form factor S2, the iPad mini 4 beating tablet with Super AMOLED display, expandable storage, lighter, thinner etc etc.
whatyadoinsucka
26 Dec 15 #49
We've heard all about these iPhone/iPad beaters, but I've not seen a palm pre in along time, sales wise like it or not Apple outsell like for like. Ease and simplicity go along way, and laziness.. It's not right but that's how it is, I.m glad the rivals got behind android as its pushing boundaries and Apple will copy and perfect technology's Samsung released years before

My now two year old 10" Toshiba Excite Pro was quite the bargain when I bought it at £160 having a higher than 2K display and a fast Tegra 4 processor....

Two years down the line and its starting to look a bit long in the tooth being bulky and weighty and the worst problem of all (although I knew this when I bought it, but price won overall) it cannot be rooted and it is stuck on Android 4.3...this is a Toshiba security lock down issue rather than the tablet.

Saying that, I am considering another year of use before I consider it outmoded, it still ticks all the boxes, I still find Android 4.3 very much usable.

So personally I do not see your 'cost effective' analogy.

Ok then,I am not particularly clued up on these gadgets and I nearly bought one if these for my daughter last week for£220( but I didn't as I thought I would hold out for the sales) ,so to me this looks like a good deal. However many of you who will know a lot more than me about these things are saying that this is still overpriced and much better tablets are available for less.

I had an original 2012 Nexus 7 which I sold (eBay) last year for £70+ to buy a Lenovo Yoga 2 10.1 tablet which I didn't get on with and sent it back.

Went into currys in town and had a play with all the different tablets. I wanted a larger screen than the 7.

Previously I've always used Android. Yet I've come out with an iPad Air 2 which I love. Suits me completely. And I still love to use an Android mobile phone (Xiaomi Note 2). And FWIW, I use Linux Mint O/S on the computer.

Moral in my mind is to have a look at a few tablets in person and see what YOU like. Most of the discussion on this site is unhelpful due to the strongly biased brand opinions that people hold.

Apple could easily develop a treamlined iOS with admittedly less compatibility for future but more speedy and stable... but choose not to... so you have to update hardware of old tablets and phones

I'm sure most owners of older iphones and ipads would gladly accept less compatibilty with latest apps as long as all the older apps worked fine and the operating system remained speedy and stable.

the last (final) updates available for older generation devices always make the device barely usable forcing people to buy new and preventing any option to downgrade firmware/os

Are you uneducated or something? Did you go to school? I don't think you did. I found out that it existed, I did some research on it, and i came to the conclusion it is overpriced for what it is. Even if i haven't used one, if i did and it worked flawlessly and was perfect to use, it still wouldn't be worth £400. Just look at the competition e.g. Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 8.0.

I am sure the latest iPads are amazing tablets and work exceedingly well, but you do pay for the brand.

Phones and Tablets have long since plateaued imo. Ive got an iPad mini 4 and my brothers got the iPad mini 2. Other than 1 or 2 relatively small differences i.e. the touch id I still think the 2 is a very decent device, more than enough. The 4 does not magically do everything better, infact it would take me some time to even realise I was on his.
Phone wise I've got a 5c, its old now but still rings, texts, opens emails and most importantly the tom-tom app runs nicely.

Still makes me laugh how many people are obsessed over specs. I really don't see what you would ever be doing on a tablet that would ever push it anywhere near max?.

99.9% of people buying tablets don't give 2 monkeys about specs, they want it for email, internet, Facebook, twitter then maybe a few more personalised apps and games.

Buy what you like, look after it then if you don't like it take it back or resell it.
philippo to Badger1980

I wholeheartedly agree. Unfortunately all the operating system 'improvements' add treacle to the system requiring updating of the hardware. It's happened for years. Every update of windows seems to add more treacle to my pc (with the possible exception of Windows 10). So it's not an Apple thing specifically. I feel they would be more honest if they gave the hardware a life limit when buying or even changed to a new model for pricing similar to mobiles where you get an upgrade after x months.
boomninjaraiden
26 Dec 15 #96
Samsung tablets are notorious for having a ton of bloatware and for not being all that efficient. I would bet that the iPad mini 2 performs better than it, even with much inferior specs. That's the advantage of having control of both the hardware and software.
Badger1980
26 Dec 15 #97

To a degree but its always fixed quick. Ive got a 2 year old 5c and it really lost the plot on the update a few months back but they did another soon after which fixed it. The conspiracy theories always flood out when a new operating system comes out but honestly I've never known it not get fixed soon after.

Who insulted first? Quote - "you clearly know nothing about it". I find that quite insulting. What do you know about my knowledge of iPad Mini 4? You made an assumption based on a single statement. So who's the real evolutionary ladder gap?

So you want me to give info about the specs of the iPad Mini 4? Well it has a dual-core 1.5GHz processor and 2GB RAM. It comes in 16GB/64GB/128GB models with no expandable storage. Build quality is excellent, as of all iPads. The screen is a 7.9" LED-backlit display with a pixel density of 326 pixels per inch. It is comparable to the cheaper Samsung Galaxy Tab S2 8.0 which has an octa-core processor, a quad-core at 1.9GHz and a quad-core at 1.3GHz. It contains 3GB of RAM. Storage is 32GB/64GB with up to 128GB additional microSD storage. It has a 8.0" super AMOLED display with 320 pixels per inch.

Anyone can Google that information. But the point is, I think I know what I am talking about.

Which one is a better tablet? That is all down to the user, which includes what their expectations are, what they want to use the tablet for, what they are familiar using, other devices they have in the house, amongst many more.

Taken from [engadget]
The Tab S2 is running a TouchWiz-skinned version of Android 5.1 Lollipop. As I mentioned in my Galaxy S6 Edge+ review, Samsung has come a long way from its days of cramming Android full of tons of useless apps and half-baked features. There are still plenty of Samsung apps available, like S Translator and the chat app AllTogether, but you'll have to choose to install them from the Galaxy Apps store. That's a better option than having your phone stuffed with junky software. And the few preinstalled apps on the Tab S2 are pretty useful, especially Microsoft options like Word, OneDrive and Skype.

Having control of hardware and software with iOS? That would be an Apple first.

That should have been fixed with the rather very old firmware update...mine certainly runs warm if running at maximum performance, and unless gaming (rarely) I happily leave it on balanced in power management and it runs much cooler...wife finds the same with hers...Mainly use it for casual browsing, video viewing and magazine reading....reasons we found for wanting a 2K+ screen, so suits needs until the none upgradable OS starts to become a problem with app updates.

I gave my 70 year old genteel step mother my iPad 2 a couple of years ago, she has recently said she feels like smashing it up as it is unbearable for email and internet (so slow).
I don't mind too much, I really gave it to her so my dad could watch Sky Sports TV on it, which is okay (bit slow to start, but fine to watch the footy on).

Just my personal opinion , ipads are very slick and reliable but having tried most tablets I have settled with and am very pleased with a 10" Lenovo yoga tablet , brilliant battery life, very functional built in stand , very reliable and takes micro SD cards so no struggling for space.
I found 16 GB storage very limiting , with lots of apps you would struggle to manage more than a couple of hours of video.

May I ask what was the price of the iPad mini 2 32GB (with 3 years guarantee) at John Lewis before 24th December? Do you know what was the price of the 16GB one? Many thanks!

you do not seem to have taken into account the value of the ios. if it were as simple as getting the tablet with the best hardware specs then yes i would agree with you. however my nephew and neice who live abroad have every apple product you could think of and only want to use facetime!!!

I would wager that if you were to look up anandtech's review and see their benchmarks, the iPad mini 2 would be at least on par if not better.
Apple are in a unique position of optimising their software for their hardware, samsung's hamstrung by having to rely on Google, their skins are always atrocious too.

I am not stopping you or anyone buying it...just agreeing that for a two year old tablet against the competition it is overpriced at £189, you are well within your rights to be a delusional fanboy.

It's an opinion. Being a user of iPads and iPhones and MacBooks (which I have one at the moment, best laptop I've ever had, but no iPhone or ipad) having an opinion does not make me a moron, as you're insinuating.

I do however feel passionate about value for money, and merely point out that I believe this isn't value for money. At a lower price, yes, but the current one, no.

I am not rubbishing apple products, but I am saying they are over priced for what you get.

Along with John Lewis with their 2 year guarantee. Seems quite a few doing it at this price.

Is that the price per lb for squid these days
RuudBullit
27 Dec 15 #127
have first prize for completely missing the point. i mentioned ebay, as this is where i got the information about the company shipping from abroad, not paying taxes, and generally not being as reputable as argos. any issue would mean sending the product back to hong kong. the cheapest price isn't always the best deal. people just don't seem to get that.
usetheforceluke
27 Dec 15 #128
you did not get the john lewis was a far better buy then as they make more profit, better warranty and still got less heat, but people as you says.........just dont get that
Obviously
RuudBullit
27 Dec 15 #129
i was talking about the foreign trader, which is why i quoted the link. and john lewis wasn't £10 cheaper, so you were obviously talking about the foreign trader too. it's all there in black and white.
RuudBullit
27 Dec 15 #130
it's hardly an insult, it was an assumption based on the fact that you said 'I didn't know there was an ipad 4'. so it was a pretty fair assumption. you then proceeded to be rude to me. so i responded in kind.
katestewart9279
28 Dec 15 #131
Dunno! Haven't bought any squid lately but I will swap some for one of the IPads. Now that would be a hot deal.
RuudBullit
28 Dec 15 #132
the top and bottom of it is,regardless of spec, the end user experience is the best on apple tablets. that's why so many people have them. it's cheap and arrogant to call someone a 'delusional fanboy' because they disagree with your opinion.
RewardReaper
28 Dec 15 #133
Despite whether it was intended as an insult or not, I found it quite demeaning. I don't like being rude, but I felt compelled to say what I said after I felt I received a rude comment. "you clearly know nothing about it" - you used some very strong words in that statement. Doesn't matter what your intentions are, you can't control how someone else feels.

And I'm sorry, an assumption is an assumption. I don't even think it was a fair assumption. We live in a connected web and it only takes minutes for someone with no knowledge of a gadget or device to be armed with a wealth of information to make a reasonable judgement as to whether it is worth its retail price.

You said you responded in kind, yet you said "There's a gap in the evolutionary ladder for someone just like you". Need I say more.
RuudBullit
29 Dec 15 #134
I think you misunderstand, by 'responding in kind', what I was saying was that you were throwing insults at me, so i did the same back. I don't know what you think I meant. Regardless, like I say, I was neither agreeing nor disagreeing with you on the price point, but you would surely have to use one to decide whether it justifies the price tag. You only discovered the device existed 5 minutes before posting. As someone has already said, the value for money of a tablet depends on the buyers/users expectations, needs, etc.
I was very against apple, and their products. I thought they were overpriced. I had had several tablets by other manufacturers. Then in oct last year i folded and bought my son an ipad for his birthday. After using it with him, I quickly came to realise that it trounced anything i'd had before for what i wanted. so i got one. and i've now bought the missus one. and i don't for one minute think my money has been wasted. i'm very very happy with my purchases. so you should really try something to see if it works for you before deciding if its 'worth it'. it doesn't surprise me that most of the people slagging off ipads are those that don't own them. the majority of the people who do own them are happy with them.

She's probably spent the last two years trying to work out where you put the water in to make a cup of tea with it.

If any tablet is that slow it struggles to load a native app then It clearly had a software issue and needs a factory reset or a clean install. I'm really into my gadgets so I'll buy a pointless upgrade like the next guy but the iPad is one I have never felt the need to and it's a daily use thing for me.

Museum spec. I got my dad a Tab S 8.4 (4G sim) for 170 quid off Amazon Warehouse Italy (with the extra 30% off deal) a couple of weeks ago - came broken seal on the box but totally as new - 2 year euro samsung warranty. Next to this it's like finding Arnie's severed arm and head-chip in Terminator 2.

To pay 190 smackers in 2016 for this fossil's spec list and see it voted hot to over 1000 degrees - half the UK must be lobotomised.

The thing is, there may be reasons why one may not think the new iPad Mini is worth it before even trying it out. You don't need to use an iPad to know about the limitations on connectivity, syncing, customisation, amongst other things. Why else is jailbreaking so popular? And these might be some of the most important things some people look for. Perhaps a more open operating system is the most crucial factor for someone.
Sure, testing out the kit is great to see the hardware in action. But for some people, I don't think that is necessary to judge the value for money if they have prior experience with using iPads and are familiar with the workings of iOS.
It's great that you like the iPad and you ended up buying 3. Not everyone would. Not everyone would spend £1k on 3 tablets, especially when there are similar performing tablets on this highly competitive market for less than 2/3rds of the price. Guess it's horses for courses.
I've got an iPad and I've used it for years. I thought it was fantastic when I first got it. There weren't many good competitors back then. I upgraded to a new Galaxy Tab S as the iPad was too old and slow. I actually tried out the new iPad Mini 4 recently and yes it's performance was superb. But, I still don't think it's worth it because I have a tablet that works better for me that cost less.
