Great device. Got one from Argos in the post Christmas sales. Installed Kodi and have opened up a world of free programming. Using it to stream games to my living room from the gaming PC in the back room. Added Ethernet, a 64gb USB drive and an Xbox wireless controller adapter via OTG all for peanuts. It might not have the power of the Nvidia Shield, but it cost me £45 for the box, maybe £52 all in.

The cpu will place an address on the address bus to specify a memory location from which it will fetch an instruction over the data bus, and then it will execute that instruction. The instruction may typically involve an operation on data, and the result will be placed back into memory. Some instructions involve moving to different locations in the address range to fetch further data or put the results of data operations into, in which case it will add or subtract to the address registers to effect a ‘jump’ instruction, thus allowing the execution of instructions to follow a non linear process. Some instructions involve testing, typically testing a bit to see if it is zero or one. The result of such a test can conditionally execute a further instruction, or not. Hence, testing and jumping form the basis of a conditional loop. This kind of thing continues, including intercepting data generated by the user, outputting data intended for perception by the user, until Kodi is terminated or the power is removed.

Doesn't work with the remote though.
The only Android TV device with iPlayer is the Shield TV, as NVidia made the app. BBC basically can't be arsed because the iPlayer app has Chromecast support, and this works as a Chromecast receiver, so you can just do it that way. Or, if you're going to use Kodi, the iPlayer WWW plugin works perfectly. Full HD, including the live channels, all direct from iPlayer.

I bought one of those Chinese android TV boxes a few days ago and the iPlayer from the play store was a normal phone/tablet version and looked awful on a 49" TV screen it was the same with Netflix.
So I'm assuming if I bought this and side loaded the iPlayer app it would be the same.
Nexusfifth to paulandpam1
11 Jan 16#28
If you sideload on it, I presume yes, but what this does and mostly no Chinese boxes do is accept casting.
For example you could cast iPlayer from your phone and get a perfect picture. (so you have the menus and selecting on your phone and only the content is displayed on your tv).

What I mean is all service and menu on android TV - is you to rent buy movies they pop out all time more worst with fire TV
Now with little works / root these devices become more android tablet / kodi etc ... than everything changes .
I have Shield TV and you can install from google play kodi the game is change now you have some good stuff
But for full potential ( powerfull hardware ) need to root to modify some files and install other apk to make more as tablet TV

2 If you planing to play android games and "android TV " yes they can do this job shield TV is the best
3 Price shield TV is half price PS4 if you do not have PS4 and thinking gaming - DO NOT LOOK for shield TV or other android TV just get PS4 and enjoy gaming PS4 is miles better
4 Need all media play + gaming PS4 or xbox is best - DO NOT look for android they to low devices . + xbox + PS4 can play all you media DVD or blue ray + they have 500 GB storage + it is PC Where android is limited to android game + lot of game a touch games there millions of other games but than you have problem as nexus have 8 GB storage need to buy USB and starting moving aps to USB etc so hard job

This has marshmallow - so the internal storage can be increased by connecting a USB drive. This has an OS optimised for TV and Remote use, while with android boxes it's like connecting your mobile to your telly and trying to operate it with remote instead of touch. But with android players you get an option to install all the apps from the play store, while with NP you will only find certain apps which are optimised for TV on the playstore (you can still sideload them).
At this price there is no comparison between the 2.

I had a shield too briefly and had most devices that run Kodi. I found it over rated too. It is indeed very fast and kodi runs well on it but not as well as even an rpi2 with openelec on it. For a top end device it still plays 23/24fps roughly and not smooth at all. Some people are not bothered by this and some are. I found my m8s ran kodi just as good. The game side looked nice but there was a delay on button press on the controller with the online games even on 65 meg fibre.
If your gonna game its a bargain but if only for Kodi and such as plex then its overkill in my opinion.
brookysm
11 Jan 16#78
Have both the 16gb and the Pro and have no jerkiness with most avi's but that can often be the encoding not the device with Kodi, if you just want it just for Kodi and/or Plex then yes it is overkill but that isn't the fault of the device is it?
submerged
11 Jan 16#79
No not the device fault, never said it was but many rave about it just for kodi use and its just not needed just for kodi. It is very fast though. It did not play 23/34fps without stepping on mine and android is known to have that issue but not everyone is sensitive to it. They were all files played through Genesis and the like though, not local ripped stuff so could have been down to the encoding. I had an Odroid c1+ that played it perfect compared to every android device including the shield.
It is an awesome device but just not for me as would never use the game side of it and when I plugged in my m8s and used Kodi I found no difference in performance at all.

It also depends on which skin you use, with a Skin like Transparency devices like the Pi grind to a halt, same if you have a large library but if your using a simple skin and add ons then you probably won't notice a difference. Seems to be quite a difference if you use Plex tho, features such as search often go awol on lesser devices, the difference between versions on the 4k Fire TV Box and Shield are like chalk and cheese with the Amazon version considerably worse than the version running on the Shield.

I’ve absolutely no idea how to make it switch between my google account and my wife’s google account, when we sit down to watch something. A television is a multi-user device — a whole family will sit round and watch something together (looking up from their tablets occasionally). Or friends will gather and watch something, together. Android TV seems to be designed with the assumption that everyone is single and has no friends. Or else they simply haven’t realised that a television simply isn’t used the same way as a phone and requires a multi-user interface and not one single “master of the universe” account that denies the existence of the accounts of all others present.
