Thanks MBC for the link, yes I love Serious eats & have been "putting it out there" as a good info source for a few years now (inc here) ...was conversing with Kenji again the other day.. (I quite often pick his brains) & it was he who put me onto the instapot (cheaper than the breville) which as a 1-pot device fits in a cupboard nicely when not in use, but likely used 3+ times per week, the advanced option with the Android / apple apps have easily adaptable programs for your own best method, ..(I was bugging him about energy use / wastage on a regular drop in sous vide unit with circulation, as they use regular pots with no thermal retention, in the course of other things we were on about pressure cooking veg (for dogs & humans) the thermal losses, moisture vs running a kitchen fan etc to be truly economical vs cracking a window open for the steam etc ...the instapot covers a lot of this & is programmable up to 24 hrs ahead (don't know how it deals with power cuts & memory, but hey... also offers a good vehicle for straight forward programmable sous vide without buying in a dedicated unit for around the same cost.
(that & I needed a good replacement rice cooker, my pressure cooker is 20+ yrs old stove top type, I'd like a crock pot... this does all that.
But back on track, I already age in my little fridge (pellicule forming for instance for bacon prior to a brine / dry rub & bag, & after smoking rest it.. this wee thing is a nice tidy option rather than making a kit form unit from scratch, though i'd like to see better coverage of the led for germicidal purposes, ...wish they'd design hospital rooms around germicidal leds to assist the hot bedding deep clean process.
(i'm thinking of installing some on a timer for my bathroom & shower room, ...just got to make sure all plastics are up to being bombarded with that spectrum signature)
Looks like the instantpot became available in the uk in december or a bit earlier... check out the basic models available on amazon (not the newest snazzy version sadly)
TBH (& this isn't meant to sound as overtly detrimental as it may appear) I have had better offal (heart) ..& ostrich steaks for example than the amount of dissapointing chews of various expensive but poor quality tesco meats, that is why sadly i'm not impressed it's all way too hit & miss with tesco quality.
We are not bon viveur's / bon vivant's ..just attentive to taste & texture.
I could probably make something good of it if I sous vide'ed some but then again same with anything slow cooked & seared is going to be good due to the process ..so I may as well stick to the cheap cuts that really do it fo me in the first place in terms of cost efficiency & taste.
But I would recommend that folk try the Ostrich steaks (sous vide & fast frozen) which tesco sell , it is mouthwateringly delicious & very filling for the portion size (dense meat) a pack of 2 does 3 typically in our house 2 adults & kid) ..which for £5 a pack of 2 portions is delicious (cheaper on offer elsewhere I must add).
Moist, & succulent, pre-cooked simply sear it in a pan. a meat I could pretty much drop many forms of beef for in the main.
TBH the wife is more into the beef rib than me (I adore simple rump) so in part it is down to personal taste, & i've enjoyed many a good proper argentinean steaks ..when i'm visiting a friend with a well kept herd next time i'm bound to have some of the good stuff (they swear by their rib steaks) but I think i've had that many disappointments it'd be lost on me*
*i'm a cheap & easy to please date
I've got my eye on an "instapot" (soon to be in production here) at which point i'll look forward to re-trying a few cuts like bone rib in a long sous vide & sear & see if I can understand the fuss, to me it's too much akin to a regular pot roast :disappointed:
For those who like aged steak, there is a fridge age-er (small led. fan driven box inna box, not bag aged) that is in the process of getting into production, which could change a good deal of folks idea of meat, .you've got to calculate the weight drop as it crusts & ages, but makes buying bulk & cutting deals all the better potentially.
I'd prefer less meat & better quality, (often as you get older you get the meat sweats after a steak meal pig out ..be prepared  )

Good price but typically very dissapointing quality, try not to buy their meats based on so much cack in terms of quality when cooked, some of their finest is no more than value..
Won't vote either way to be fair on the premise of HUKD

Quite agree. I used to think Tesco joints were OK but we opened a topside roast from the freezer last weekend and the cut was just awful. Sinew and tendons all the way through. There was no way to get a decent sized slice of meat off it.
With all the majors doing 'half-price' meat on a rota, there's no need to risk it at Tesco now.
