only upgrade is the wireless it now works off both 2.4 & 5ghz instead of 2.4 before

Differences
More energy efficient (due to processor)
Dual core processor
Less flash storage - 256MB vs. 2GB
Wireless to 802.11 ac (instead of 802.11 b/g/n) so 2.4Ghz and 5Ghz
Better wireless antenna layout so better connectivity
Better styling IMO
Both have 512MB of RAM, so for 1st gen a total of 2.5GB not 4GB

Do you know if the Chromecast two still has the £20 credit @ google play store?
Wheresmylaptop to stitchnelson

......and if it does, can it be applied to an account that has previously had £20 credit from a Chromecast 2 purchase?
Thanks in advance for any responses.

Power from TV USB socket.

requires USB power, I've had plugged it into the USB on my Samsung, and a cheap tesco TV and both work fine

Yeah, I thought the credit was expired or about to expire. That was a good offer. The Equaliser doesn't sweeten this deal as much as the voucher would have. £22 is ok.

Yeah I missed out on the chance to get it from work for £20 with my discount, but just never got round to it, bummer

Can Kodi be installed on this ?

There is no internal memory in the Chromecast, therefore you will not be able to install Kodi (or other Apps for that matter).
You can run Kodi in a tablet / phone / PC and stream content to it though.

Just for info regarding powering it I found that using the usb from the TV resulted in intermittent crashes and loss of casting. Switching to using the supplied mains adaptor sorted it out. In summary, def worth a shot using TV usb but if you have problems use the mains.

I've found a common fault with this (seems common once I'd googled it) is that it seems to have an audio sync issue. My tv is a LG smart tv if anyone else is in the same boat.
And yep, the 20 quid credit ran out on the 16th.

Thought that was just a 1st gen problem.

Is using Chromecast any better than just casting to the LG? Just wondering, ta.

Voted cold I'm afraid, deal is better when with a new release and definitely sweetened when £20 credit was available. The 2 months free nowtv Sky movies subscription is still available to the end of January, but check the t&c first as you may find you're not eligible.

I have the chromecast 1 and 2, the latest is a lot quicker.
I like the idea of the new audio chromecast.

I suppose your tv has miracast or some such thing in it, as you mentioned casting.
Chromecast is in my opinion much better than miracast because far more apps work well with it, if you want to cast the whole screen that is another story.
All in all I believe a Google search would give you a better information or you need to tell us a bit more about your use case for anyone to be able to give you some meaningful advice.

That is not quite right, Chromecast has 4GB (at least the 1st gen did I can't be bothered to check for 2nd gen) internal memory it is simply not user accessible (so your reasoning is quite right). I am quite sure someone managed to hack it though, but it is not easy and I haven't heard of anyone actually using something like that.
All in all if you want a good Kodi/Plex client I would go for something else, Fire TV stick is roughly in this price range and does the job really well. The boxes (Nexus player, Fire TV, Nvidia Shield TV, Razer, loads of usually bad Chinese boxes) are probably even better but haven't seen a good one under 50£ (not counting 49£ for the Nexus one).

Some advice if you would guys: I would like a set up where I can get access to Now TV, Amazon Prime, and ideally some form of Kodi build (The Beast or Blackbox for example) all from the same source - keep things nice and neat. Question is which is better? Get these programs on a tablet and cast to one of these? Or get a dedicated input device (some form of Android media centre/mini PC)? Thanks for the advice as always

Cheers for that. Ours is an LG Smart TV and we can cast via miracast or it opens the app in the store. Not quite the same it seems and didn't want to replicate the experience!

How does this even get heat after Google has been pretty much giving this away over Christmas with the £20 cash equivalent play store credit among other things for the last couple of months ?

a) It's the cheapest you can buy the device for right now, unless I can borrow your time machine?
b) A lot of other people use software like Kodi and Plex and don't really care about play store credit.
