Apple do not recommend these machines for Logic Pro or Final Cut Pro, as the integrated graphics card is not suitable for transcoding video (yes, Final Cut Pro uses the graphics card processor not the CPU).

They are more than capable of handling photo editing on Adobe Creative Cloud, however there's a major drawback to the 2015 21.5" iMacs.

No memory upgrades (soldered) - Default 8GB configuration.
No hard disk upgrades (unless you want to take a hair dryer and crack open the front bezel)

Also the 1TB non-Fusion drive is going to be incredibly slow.

Very good computer, it WILL last you, my old one is still going strong 6 years later, never had to upgrade hardware, only batteries for the mouse and keyboard.

I don't know what the performance will be like, I run FCPX on a discrete AMD Radeon R9 M295X 4096 MB on my iMac and it runs better than the system I myself with 2 x Quad Core Xeons.

Bought my missus a similar iMac 21.5" to the one at Costco but with the 4K think it's the same integrated video (it's 1.5GB memory on the card, but pretty sure I recall it's something like 1GB is dedicated and the other 512MB is VRAM).

I just downloaded Heaven 4.0 benchmark (running with defaults - medium settings) and with a 3.1GHZ processor and the same video card, I am getting FPS: 18.2 Score: 459 Min FPS: 8.8 and Max FPS:36.3 at 2048x1152 Medium.

For apparently an integrated card I reckon that's pretty good, but you should check out other vendors systems online for comparison (Unique Heaven is a cross-platform benchmark).

Certainly the faster CPU is recommended for LPX according to some posts, so £100 is worth the spend there.

Just to bring some balance. I was a hardcore PC user for many years (and hated macs so much I bought a MacBook and took it back a few days later as I couldn't get used to the OS). When I got my iPad I decided to give it a second try so when I got iMac in 2009 I formatted 80% of the drive for PC use (people forget that the Mac can run both operating systems as standard). Within 6 months I found that I didn't use the PC side at all. People say this one here won't transcode video or play games, well my 2008 one does both and I'm sure this one will as well! Of course this won't be like a dedicated custom built gaming or video rig, but will suffice for 90% of the public.

No me either, totally agree with you, nothing wrong with the actual CPU and it's fine for a lot of things, but Apple are really having one over on the consumer.

I was not arguing pricewise, I just wanted to defend what is imo a decent processor. (Not going into price details that it costs under a 100£...)

For example you can get a better species machine with a larger monitor for less than 300£, even if you are looking for a small device you can build/buy a powerful nuc plus better screen and fit it at the back of the monitor for less than 400£.

I never said this was a good deal and have voted cold actually because it is overpriced. But if you must have Apple and want something like this should be good enough for most.

It is totally overpriced and Apple know they can get away with it, £800 for a Passmark of just over 3000 is taking the Mick a bit, no wonder people build Hackintoshes.

​That's what I was getting at. If it was me, for those tasks I'd look at a cheap i3 laptop and if you wanted iPad. A friend has key bought the 5k retina one of these, and it's just sat in his spare room upstairs. I recommended a number of other devices, but he was adamant he wanted this. Each to their own.

I think his point was as to the durability and longevity of Apple computers generally. No one is suggesting that this is the computer you would buy for CPU/GPU intensive tasks - but 'most people' do only need a computer for general web browsing and productivity!

I see what you meant above but I think its quite the opposite case, this is a machine for people that are aware of its limitations and do not care, so there is no way in the world that this is 'fine for 99% of the people', as it will struggle with literally anything that is not web browsing and writing a word doc. This is a desktop pc, sold at a premium price, that will age at smartphone speeds (i.e. obsolete/too slow to run its own OS in 2/3 years). Yes it's quiet, but how important is low consumption when you have to wait around for things to happen? There is no way that this is better than its quad core bigger brother for general use. This is literally a case of apple pulling its marketing weight

Agree 100%. I sold my iMac and bought a MacBook Pro. Connected to my 2 25" 4K monitors it's a much better experience and offers much more flexibility.

Sure. £800 seems a lot for basic tasks like that though - personally I'd be looking to a laptop (then at least you gain portability over this device), but you pays your money, you takes your choice...

It is a perfectly capable processor for 99% of people. If you are serious about video editing or gaming than this is not a machine for you.

This processor has a TDP of 15W (it is basically a laptop model) so it is super power efficient and most likely very cool - so no fans and whisper silent operation (ok not quite as this specific pc has a hdd instead of ssd).

All in all for people using these as general purpose pcs it is a far more reasonable choice than a quad core using 105W and costing 200£ more which they would never actually use to the full potential.

For example I have a NUC with i3-5010U, so about 3000 at cpu bench and it is perfectly capable of running Windows and being used as a main pc by my family as well as always running to act as a plex server etc, all this with about 6W idle power consumption and about 20W when in active use.
All that said this is (in line with usual apple policy) overpriced for what it is.

That is a far more capable machine. Personally, I steer clear of all in ones, but some people value the neatness. I prefer the ease of upgrade and repair of a conventional desktop.

Logic Pro doesn't require video card acceleration.

It's £200 more and that is the standard price, so not really a good deal. Better to buy from John Lewis or Amazon.

Not for me as I'm already kitted out, but out of interest would you suggest spending the extra £100 for THIS if potential buyers are looking to use Final cut Pro or Logic Pro ? It's not a huge additional premium in the long term.

I just can't keep up with the pros & cons of the processor and graphics combinations now. It was much easier when Spectrums ruled the roost. ( Key for BBC vs Spectrum debate)

Depends on what you're really looking for in a PC though - I have a Mac Pro but it spends almost all it's time running Windows. Can't stand OSX and I only use it when I have to. A Windows-based all-in-one would make more sense than this for most people who aren't tied into Apple as you get more hardware for your money.

Fairly slow processor and I can't seem to find any info on how easy it is to fit an SSD or upgrade the memory on to this model and whether it voids your warranty.

An SSD really transforms the feel on any desktop or laptop and personally I wouldn't even consider any machine which I couldn't easily upgrade with one, especially a Mac as it's so easy to reinstall OSX after changing the drive (it automatically boots, downloads and installs the OS when you boot with a drive without it installed)

I wouldn't leap at this model to be honest and suspect people are just seeing iMac relatively cheap (for Apples over inflated prices) and voting hot without delving into this.

It'll run fine for everything except more intensive stuff like gaming, video editing, etc.

Voted hot as it's a good office desktop, but it's limited longer term as you can't upgrade the RAM (27" version you can) and the gfx card is basic.
