Short dated (December) but rice is absolutely fine past it's BB date... in fact 'aged' basmati rice is typically more expensive!
Marked down from 49p down to 29p but scanned 10p.
Found in Blackwood, but I did empty the shelf (of all four!) so not sure if they have any more in the store room. Price should be nationwide if you can find them...

This is superb 'clean' tasting rice. Highly recommended.

The longer Basmati rice is left to mature, the better the flavour and texture becomes.
This is a bargain, stock up and don't worry about the date on this one.

Good find. Ignore BBD on dry rice.

Beasties tend to grow in it if it is old.

This is true. What you should do is keep it in an airtight food grade container and store it indoors, preferably just in the kitchen. This way, it will take a very long time (talking years) for anything to go wrong with it. I once stored some in an old cooking pan with the lid on and banged it in the garage. A few weeks later, there was moths in it! but properly stored, never had a problem.

It is illegal for stores to sell out of date food

It is technically. But an allowance can be made on certain food stuffs, generally grain and non refrigerated food, so long as it's not well, well out of date, and it's clearly pointed out that it is out of date.

That depends on what you mean by out of date. According to the Food Standards Agency (2014) -
"While it is an offence to sell food after the 'use by' date, retailers can, with the exception of eggs, sell products after the 'best before' date, providing it is safe to eat. Eggs have a 'best before' date, but should not be eaten after the date shown on the label."
We waste quite enough food without throwing perfectly good stuff away arbitrarily.
