If you're trying to access 'those' sites and you don't know the incredibly easy way around the block, I worry for what may end up on your computer from 'those' sites...
For those saying you don't get a good deal over the phone with Virgin as an existing customer, some tips:
1. Chat with their Twitter team @VirginMedia - they'll send you a form to fill in to get one of them to contact you. Within 10 mins my mobile rang and one of them was happy to apply £10/month discount on my account. All I asked was for a discount, as I felt I was paying too much.
2. Be polite on the phone. If you have a fault, if there's an error with billing, if your bank has screwed up, etc.... Whatever it is - it isn't the guy on the other end of the phone's fault. They will help you a lot quicker if you're polite and patient. Have a bit of banter with them, and you'll get discounts / apology credits, etc added left, right and centre.
3. If it's not urgent, don't ring at peak. You'll get someone flustered and more likely less experienced.
4. Use the online tools. They have phone line checkers, broadband checkers, etc. Proving you've followed their guidance at the beginning of a tech call will increase their confidence in you not being a dunce.
5. If, unfortunately, you get someone who's not the sharpest tool in the box (once had a tech agent recommend I reinstall Windows because the broadband was slow. I knew it was nothing to do with my PC..) just take their advice, hang up, then call again a bit later. Again, patience and politeness.
6. If your Internet is slow - ask them to look at the Utilisation. If it's high in your area, they can give you discounts every month until it's rectified.
Yes, you probably shouldn't have to behave like this when you have issues, but some common courtesy goes a long way. You don't want to be "that guy" that has "Code 10" written on their account 'cos you're a ranting, shouty customer.
These are big companies (same goes with BT, etc.). They cannot hire brilliant people at every level of support, so just deal with the lemons when served, and make some lemonade.

I took it at this price in the middle of last year. No problems with it so far.
I would add that I've had an email from the saying the price is going up by £3 from the end of this months. Don't know if that has any effect on this offer??

Enjoyable read and well said.. For every 1 person like yourself there are 20 lemons, who dont use good judgement, or brain power, they just post in a forum like this and vent. Then get their knickers in a twist.
I found the twitter team really good, someone said the advisors are happy and better to deal with on fridays, because of the impending weekend, there open 7 days a week. So maybe the majority are good at there job and are happy. Same with sky never had an issue with there advisors, or for that matter BT. Your always going to find a lemon.
But maybe if you treat people like you want to be treated, be it face to face or over the phone. You'll all get better results? Just a suggestion from someone working in the banking industry over the last 15 years.

That's the trouble with VM - I was also on the 50mb broadband, and they offered me £16.50 per month for 12 months last weekend. No consistency, and customers are left feeling they can't trust VM.

There is a blockage between my house and the underground cabinet which they have applied to the council to dig up the road. Shame really... However they have given me a £50 credit on my account which with the initial incentive is now £100 on the account.
I can wait the 4 weeks for the dig, and it is outside a 'difficult' neighbours house which is even better.

Just got my contract. I can't understand it. It is like the one posted on page 24. 12 month contract for both bb and telephone. £50 credit showing. Haven't paid line rental in advance yet as waiting to see if they will call me back about my existing contract with a decent retenrion deal . However total charge shows as £21.99 during the initial 12 months? If line rental is meant to be £17.99 then bb is only £4 a month. It was mwant to be £5. Anyone else have this written down as part of their contract? Would this be binding on the parties?

Well just had it installed after retentions didnt bother to call me back during my cancellation period.
Broadband works fine; telephone line doesn't work- there is a ring tone but number doesnt match the one I am supposed to have.
I dont plan on using the phone in any case.
When I checked online they have my contract as £22.99 and not £21.99 as is written down. Presume I will struggle to get this corrected.

firstly i don t trust many comapnies, they say one thing and do another...so for my own peace of mind i wanted clarification..its dog eat dog out there my freind...if our government is corrupt what do you expect the companies such as these and other are gonna be like..take the expenses scandel, the google tax scandel...!..any way just got off the phone to vm..i asked them if they didnt mind being recorded, the lady says thats fine because they do it..its definitley a 12 months contract at £20 per month, she explained how it works.. and just at the end i asked so in a nutshell "im paying £20 per month for 100meg for 12 months after the monthly credits are taken off"....she said "yes"..plus she confirmed the 1st month is free...just checked my online account with VM and it has around £26ish credit...so happy days...just needt to cancel the other 50 meg i took out on the missus name lol..that was good as well..but with the upgrade to 150meg coming up in a few months not bad at £20 per month...for 12 mnths..

Absolutely agree with you- if you have their confirmation that is good enough. I have previous experience of Virgin (and others) telling me something and there being no record of it when suddenly the bills dont match what I was told. I am surprised with iMickeyT's comments. Ultimately they are offering something and if billy bronco wants confirmation of this what is so wrong about it?
iMickeyT
1 Feb 16#484
Thats nice, that deal already kills a lot of the other provider prices. Considering the quality of service. When Virgin goes out of business like NTL and telewest, and you have to go back to ADSL (much slower) you'll be the first to complain.
And for recording calls.. From the people I know at Virgin. Every call is recorded and randomly spot checked. It's a bit of a shame you'd suggest recording calls showing no trust. Possibly jeopardising that persons job.
But at least you got a deal to crow about to to others.

As I said the discount shows as a loyalty discount- thus meaning that when (and not if) Virgin put their price up from £35.25 your price will probably go up. I owuld also question why the £5 loyalty has an end date of 18 months, but the £10.25 loyalty credit doesn't?
Hope you recorded the call?

31 Jan 161#482
You do realise that those loyalty discount points are laughable, right?
Put it this way, right now I have 10 loyalty points and am paying £254 for the exact same package that these guys are getting for £174 with 0 loyalty points. That's £80 more, which works out as me paying £8 more per point than people on 0 points! Let's call them what they are: Punishment Points. They punish loyalty and reward disloyalty.
Virgin Media are a joke, loyal Virgin Media customers are the punchline.

I got call from Virgin media today , regarding my own broadband cancellatiion which ends next week. As my contract has ended i was offered 100 meg broadband for £20 per month for a 12 month contract...I was paying £22.65 for 50 meg...now i may go for this as in getting twice as fast for £20 which in a few months will be boosted to 150 meg......or shall i stay with this new contract under missus name for £14.50 but only 50 meg plus phone....Not really bothered about the phone lol....choices.choices.!!! Gotta make decision by friday..what do you think i shud go for?..im leaning towards 100 meg for £20...more bandwith , much faster.. ?????
Cheapasnowt to billy bronco
27 Jan 16#470
The issue is that whilst you are being offered it for £20 , this will be increased part of the way thru the contract by price rises. Virgin will no doubt offer it on the basis of a discount applied to your account off the base price. As this would not constitute a promotional price for all intent and purposes but a'discount' off the price it would be free to increase the price through the initial 12 months.
The difference in speed is an advantage. against this you would have a phone line and hence two products to negotiate with it next year. Even if you have no intention of using the handset I would be inclined to take the new deal out as opposed to take its offer. I am surprised that it has given you until Friday to think about it as normally retentions want a decision there and then.
Also surprised that it has taken from 4th Jan to now (3 weeks) to contact you. Normally they did the call within the first few days after notice was given. Or was this the second or third call made by it?
I am only asking as I am about a week behind you and so am using your experience to sort of gauge how long before I should expect a call!
My personal preference if offered a similar deal would be to leave. Unless it can effectively offer 50mb and a phone line (which I don't need) for £17.99 I will not be prepared to accept it.

100 meg is going up to 150 meg in a few months I heard..

Did you try to use Topcashback or Quidco? or the new USwitch 18m deal?
My guess is that you may have started with the 12m product, but if you follow the link from any of the above sites, to simply look at it, it replaces the 12 month deal you originally had with the 18month without making it too obvious. So you may have ordered the 18month deal.
Did you get an order confirmation in email? What does that say?
iMickeyT to lu408
24 Jan 16#456
So as I mentioned.. make sure it's a 12 month contract and 12 mouth discount. If you don't clearly state uswitch they will order you the normal deal at 23.98 then 36.99.
If the advisor uses the wrong discount code. Your in for 18 months. Instead of 12 months
**This is of course if you order over the phone. If you order online to track cashback.. and you get the 18m letter you chose the wrong option**

23 Jan 16#454
Right so i checked my paper work and it said the same thing - 12 months promo and 18 month contract at full price. I took the contract out after uswitch changed it to 18 months and £5.99 for broadband. I had virgin call me asking why i didnt complete the order and i said i wanted the 12 month deal with bb for £5 a month and £50 credit - i was told "if i get you this will you take the service" to which i agreed.
Anyway, just got off the phone to a guy from customer relations, he has spoke to his manager and they agreed it must of been as i said and it has been noted on my account that it will be a 12 month contract only - so far VM customer service pretty good!

I have managed to buy the deal, with 12 month contract and the £50 credit just today.
In addition £60 cashback (TCB) has also tracked.
So, unless I have understood it wrong, I am paying £114 for the whole year, including the line rental. That's £9.50 pm.
12 month cost breakdown:
Cost of BB = £60 (5 x 12)
Line Rental = £164 (paid on the phone after buying) Sub-Total = £224
Less new customer code= £50 Sub-Total = £174
Less TCB = £60 (*not guaranteed) TOTAL = £114 or 9.50/month

You can still get the deal for 12 months if you phone them but they won't give you the £50 credit as it's an online offer.
That sucks. Yeah his name was 'Matt'. Seems that I gone through a week ago with the order but didn't process it, but they could see it on my account due to the email address I added. Check your emails as they emailed me a 'continue where you left off' mail. Worth a shot

I'm a current VM customer and have just called their retention team telling them about the uSwitch deal from yesterday and told them that I wanted it, otherwise I leave. They didn't want to give it to me because that offer was only available yesterday, for new customers, bla bla, but made me a different one which I wasn't fond of. So I said that I would cancel and my flat mate (my partner, different surname) could get the new contract. She then told me that he would be unlikely to qualify as new customer because he's lived at the same address (they'd do a credit check), which I thought to be a load of rubbish. If I left and he was the only one in the flat they wouldn't give him a broadband and phone deal just because the person who was in the flat before had a VM package before?
Has anyone had any similar experience recently? Was she only trying to scare me?

It's been pulled on the Uswitch page, at the minute you can still call virgin and quote the 12m contract.. so the price and contract are both for 12 months...(I can see on uswitch it says 18m contract with 12m discount)
Ring and quote Uswitch for 12m..
Sid Harper
15 Jan 16#384
Uswitch deal WAS 12m contract with 12m discount. I've got that going live next week. It is now an 18m deal with 12m discount. The 12m deal HAS BEEN PULLED from the Uswitch site. Probably because Virgin don't want to offer that any more. That's all I'm saying!

Ring the sales number on the virgin website and quote Uswitch deal for Bb and phone they'll match it for you. You have to ring and quote USWITCH!
To be clear, it's a 12 month deal. not 18.. Price does go back to normal price after 12 months (£36.99 in total) But your out of contact then.
Install is free - In a virgin cabled area.
Simple as that, just add the line rental saver for extra saving, to do all that call in! It's the best way!

You should have called in. Install is free. If it's a virgin area your good. Call cust care. They should sort it.
It's always best to call in with offers like the Uswitch deal. I always call in. You know it's all done right
You can still get 12 month contract by going to CWH and entering postcode to compare broadband deals. I tried and it came with £5 - 50MB superfibre with line rental of £17.99 for 12 months and free installation. Only thing was couldnt add the £50 promo code so only downside to it but still better than getting 18 month contract.

The original offer to be £14.50 a month for line and super 50 broadband if fine. Without a definite answer if i can get that and if not then ill be paying £18.66 - im better sticking to Sky for £17.40 p/m with free 20mb broadband. Yes i know its under a pound difference but atleast i know what im getting and a 12 month contract only.
sal2103
14 Jan 16#371
Well after wasting near to an hour and a half i think im going to leave it and just stick to sky.
Ive been told by 2x advisers they can off the £17.99 (reduced to £164 if paid up front) and the broadband can be given for £5 per month instead of the £5.99. BUT they cant offer the credit so told to order online and then later call for the line saver.
Having just spoken to a girl with "c***" call skills, shes told me she cant guarantee the broadband for £5 per month and the other dilemma is that it shows as a certain amount for 12 months and goes up which i guess is the remaining 6 months of the contract.

I have a Q if anyone knows answer. I have a lodger that moved in with me 6 months ago and they transfered there Virgin broadband to my address. if I asked them to cancel and if I took out this deal would that be possible or would virgin pick up on the same address?
AndiTails to JJHUKD
14 Jan 16#327
Moving does not renew the contract length, so presuming they are now out of contract, he should be safe to cancel.
However, it depends if they offered him a cheaper deal whilst moving - taking that would've reset the 12 month contract period.
And same address is fine - it just has to be a different person on the account.
I did the same with my partner. It was in her name - we cancelled and got it installed 'as new' to save around £220 due to offers! Was only without the Internet for about 20 minutes as the same engineer disconnected the account and reconnected the new one (got a new modem, upgraded to TiVo, so all equipment changed).

I'm a customer just out of contract. Phoned them to re-negotaite my payment ammounts (currently £10.50 for 50Meg + line rental which i do the yearly line rental saver).Told the scottish guy about the offer & he was aware of it. Best he said he could do was extend me for 12 months at £10.50 pm + line rental +£50 credit to my account. I said it wasn't good enough so he's done the 30 day cancellation - he didn't seem too bothered that I am leaving.
So, I've ordered this uswitch deal in the missus's name (chose new cust to virgin already living at installation address) with an "installation" date 30 days from now. It's gone thru fine n dandy
The missus will phone up in 3 weeks and pay the yearly line rental

It's confusing at the best of times you should've seen the look our ADT technician gave us.
We have a Virgin Media Cable Phone line with Talk Anywhere. When I took it out we were an analogue area therefore either had to get Dial Up or get Broadband via a BT Line as I couldn't bear Dial Up. This set up carried on for ages until Virgin upgraded our area to a digital area about 18 months ago. When I then tried to add Broadband to my account I was told I'd have to change my talk anywhere package so that they could add broadband to my account. After speaking to most of the Customer Services team they've all concluded that their systems don't allow anything to be added to our old accounts. So that's why I have a functioning Virgin Media Cable phone line with Talk Anywhere and a BT Openreach Line with Plus Net Fibre.

I have just read this review from trust pilot and reviewcentre
giving them average of 1/5 *.
Reading the reviews here resonates with this.
But having said that if I am the Old very old faithful dog of the ISP , so I have been with Talk-Talk since it's pre-addressors going back to Freeserve
and Bt for Tel line(Which I haven't used since getting my 1st mobile back in 2000 from CPW
I am on £20/mth on TT and £20 BT so total £40
Never wanting to switch to another BB, I had thought of switching my ISP from time to time to Fibre, there has been no attractive package.
So to come across this is something to think about. Don't know what to do.... Go with Virgin(This deal) or BTFibre() and pay a bit extra
hu5sain
14 Jan 16#329
I would have to disagree with that. I've been with TalkTalk since 2012 and have generally been very pleased with the service.
For the first year i was on the non-fibre package (up to 8mbps) and my speed was always around 7.5 to 8 mbps. From my first renewal i was offered Fibre (up to 38mbps) for the same price and took this up.
The speeds originally were around 25mbps but after several callouts, they finally managed to get it sorted. The callouts were managed by OpenReach and it was they who kept leaving without fully resolving the issue so i cannot blame TalkTalk for the speed issues here. I was then getting speed of around 33mbps.
On the second renewal i was willing to leave them and join sky's free broadband deal (approx £17p/m for only the line rental) + £10 for national and international calls.
TalkTalk offered to match this by charging me £15 for the fibre broadband and £12 for the calls packages - they did this by paying for all of my line rental using the line rental saver. So i was then paying £27 for Fibre, call packages with line rental already paid off. They also threw in their TV service for free - which isn't worth much tbh.
Mid-year i removed the international call package which meant i was then paying £22.50 p/m. £15 for the fibre and £7.50 for anytime national calls.
Then in October the hack occured, which did slightly worry me but without knowing the full extent, could not know if i was affected. It turned out only a small percentage of customer details were obtained ( i was not one of them ) and even those that were exposed, the bank details were starred out e.g. only the last 4 digits of account numbers were obtained. Therefore, this didn't worry me too much.
Thanks to the hacking scandal, TalkTalk offered all customers a number of 'free upgrades' to compensate for the negative publicity etc. I took up the anytime calls upgrade, which meant i no longer had to pay for it. This further reduced my bill by £7.50. So i was now paying £15 p/m for Fibre, anytime calls and line rental all inclusive.
Unforunately my line rental payments are due to start again next month. Having seen the offer from Virgin, i called up Talktalk, they were able to match the offer in terms of price but were not able to better it. As Virgin is offering pretty much guarantted 50mbps, i've reluctantly decided to leave TalkTalk and join Virgin. Having checked the call packages for Virgin i can see they are a bit more dearer than TalkTalk and also simple features like caller display have to be paid for (they were free with TalkTalk). With the £50 credit applied i will be slightly better off going with Virgin even with paying extra for the caller display etc. but i have to say i will definitely be checking up with TalkTalk at renewal to see what they can offer next time around.
So overall, it seems like a matter of luck whether TalkTalk will work for you or not, i was very pleased with the 4 years of service i recieved with them (i've been with Virgin, Sky, O2, and others in the past) so would always consider going back. If you can find a good deal with them, then i don't think there is much risk in signing up, you have a 14 or 30 day cooling period anyway so can always change your mind if your not getting the speeds you want.
BTW, i don't work for TalkTalk, just sharing my experiences with them
Hope that helps

Pretty good deal! I got their 200Mbps broadband installed by itself (so no phone line or TV) a few days before and I've no complaints so far, I'm very pleased with it if anything. I get around 220Mbps download and 20Mbps speeds in use on average when making full use of it. Good service.
Nope, TalkTalk is pretty damn awful. I was with them for a while because Virgin sold their DSL service along with their customers to them as they want to focus on fibre and... never again. I'd been looking to escape for a while and the service ended up getting so bad I needed to go elsewhere.
There's been pretty common issues with them that I also got which resulted in near enough no service for November and not much better in December when they, without telling us, reduced our max download speed from 8Mbps which we're paying for, to 1Mbps max. We were getting maybe a fifth of that. Customer support is poor and unhelpful, refusing to accept any of the blame but they'll be more than happy to take your money.
We cancelled before I got fibre installed with Virgin and TalkTalk fully disconnected our service as you'd expect but just this month they've sent in a bill for the month we haven't had with them. So yeah avoid them, you're paying them and you'll maybe get some service in return if your'e lucky. That £100 voucher is just compensation up front. Virgin connect and install you for free so count it as a £69 voucher you're getting out of it.
This is a far better deal and you'll actually get what you pay for. You could get very lucky with TalkTalk but their reputation is poor and it's just not worth the risk.

1. Depends how far you are away from the Cabinet - though putting your details into BT's DSL Checker (http://dslchecker.bt.com/) - although if you're currently on a LLU package with TT/Sky etc you'll have to use the postcode or address checker.
2. Based on TalkTalk's recent history I'd be cautious giving them my details.

Absolutely the utility companies offering fixed prices would have thought of inflation really hard before offering it.
If I see RPI has gone down in 2015 but still many retailer coming out with huge profits. As Aldi, Lidl forced big four retailer to change their game and offering this is just answer to Talk Talk's 100% free internet for 12 months current offer.
I am with virgin for last 10 years and agree with you as can't fault them for overall quality.

See here
Though, they are apparently now only limiting Uploads rather than Downloads - so even less to worry about.
As someone who downloads 1TB per quarter, I've never been 'Traffic Shaped'.
All good downloading software can work on a schedule. All my shows, etc. are pulled during the night, leaving me full bandwidth during waking hours.

Just signed up with them for another 12 months 70mb broadband(was on 50mb and when I signed into my account there was a button to click that boosted it to 70mb) only for just under £25 per month after a pleasant chat with the retentions team.
New router on its way too, have had some broadband issues in the area lately, it happens, I deal with it.
I've downloaded loads at times, never had an issue with limits and certainly never found any sites being blocked that weren't done so by all the other service providers at the time.
If you find Sky or talk talk broadband better than Virgin you must have been on their non cable service.

Was with Virgin in the past (about 5 years ago) and like many other ISP's, they are no good if you like to download. They put limits on your speed if you DL too much and that also messes with gaming etc etc.
Last I did any investigation on this, admittedly a few years ago now, the only ISP with a truly non-restrictive policy i.e. No fair use policy, is Sky. I've been with them a few years now and had no issues whatsoever

Virgin infuriated me as it was cheaper to get the cable broadband + phone line (which I didnt want) rather than the broadband by itself (solus).
After trying the sales team, the web assistance and even my local store with no luck..... I ended up ringing their retentions department - They told me to sign up for the package I wanted (50Mb Solus) and they just reduced it to the retentions price of £27.99 / mth.

Some interesting points about the landline. I'm a VM customer with 200mb internet, XL TV and weekend landline calls. When playing around with the different package combinations, I took out the option of a home phone line as I didn't need it - We all use mobiles and it no longer serves a purpose. To my surprise, taking out the line rental added £16.99 extra on top of the package account! So it basically worked out the same whether I got it with or without the landline. I decided the cheapest option (for lack of any other better way around it) was to take the landline and then just pay the line rental saver for it, to save £40. Still feels like such a waste of £164.

I tried the same, but from what i saw the bundles with tv, phone and bb always worked out better. But you do understand that every other provider you HAVE to have a phone line with line rental??
At least with virgin you have a choice I suppose?
I think some people posting in this deal, just like to make an issue out of the smallest thing, If I had read this thread before I decided on virgin at my current property, I wouldn't touch Virgin, Luckily for me I went off a friends advise and its been great, used virgin over the last 9 years, on and off.
iMickeyT
14 Jan 161#283
How does saving £40 by paying your line rental upfront make you immune? to a price increase? Every provider for mobile phones, home broadband, home phone, all have to deal with the rate of inflation. So should every company ignore that and go bump? then everybody would complain because they've gone out of business, they now have to find another provider.
From my point of view the internet is now of of the most important services at how for the family. I've used TalkTalk never again. BT I would use again, Sky I would use again, Had virgin over 9 years, at two different properties on and off and NO major issues.
A lot of people seem to confuse a cheaper price over a quality of service as well.

I tried VM for a few weeks - Whilst the sync speed was 50mb the reality was slow performance and inability to stream from Netflix and Youtube - as others have said it depends on the congestion of network traffic in the area. My area was fairly poor, but my friend who lives a mile away is fine. Customer services told me that the upcoming price increase for broadband wasn't true and I was lying - to be fair retentions tried to keep me and offered me 100mb for the price of 50, but by that point i'd already cut the cable and removed all traces of VM's (badly) fitted internal and external cable management.
So it maybe a good deal, just research before you commit - also remember you have 14 days (Check with VM as used to be 30 - might be shorter now!!!) to cancel and not pay a penny. Also worth noting as they are different networks don't cancel your existing provider until you're happy with Virgin.

The way all the providers work is they class the line rental as a separate part of the service thus the offer of a line rental saver, So you do save £40 over the year not off your broadband but the line rental, plus the monthly outgoing is cheaper, as in your not paying 17.99 a month. You've already paid your £164
A big tip for anyone looking to take this offer, make sure you do it and have the line rental saver done and paid before feb. I think the saver option maybe going OR a change in price:wink:

faisal_uk to buddy1976
14 Jan 16#265
They don't actually throttle the download speeds any more, so the transfer rates are much better.
It is only upload speeds which are affected. You can still upload 1GB on the 50MB package before throttling starts which suits most people fine. Also if you need to upload/backup large files just schedule it to run overnight then there will be no issues.
I have had a good service from VM over the years although I have the original superhub and the wireless performance is getting really bad at times. Just be aware that if you have 'wireless issues' they can't do much other than checking the settings and changing the wireless channels.
I am currently paying £3.50 a month for 50MB Internet but will have to give them another ring as they said my package would go up by £3-3.50 - so doubling in cost!!

true- letter just stated "your bill will be going up by £3.99 a month"
but a line rental saver is sort of tying you into a year contract with little bargaining available for any subsequent "bill increases" in that time.
Pretty sure if I call to cancel, they will say fine as they will have had £100+ of line rental up front in their pockets without having to provide the service.

Horrid company. I was an "engineer" for them after leaving the army. Fortunately I was so good that BT (now openreach) took me on.
To those complaining that Virgin don't serve your area. Virgin cherrypick areas, they vary rarely cable new estates, even when it backs on to an already fed estate. BT/openreach however have a USO to serve every single house in the UK with a fixed line telephone service (not however ADSL). Providing services to some remote locations can cost BT 10000's of pounds.
Neither Virgin or BT can really justify making you have a landline these days. They do however, BT's reasoning is the service contract which is attached to your telephone line (you could have broadband delivered without a dial tone).
Virgin however have absolutely no reliance on a phone line as their service is delivered in a totally different way to any service over the BT network. Why they insist on you having one is down to pure greed.
Both companies use marketing terms to bamboozle unsuspecting punters. Neither of the services the offer to the general public is 100% fibre. In both instances the broadband will be delivered over either BT's ageing (copper with sprinklings of aluminium with a touch of lead joints) network or virgins copper coax.
Me personally I wouldn't touch virgin with a 1000ft barge pole. But then I would say the same about BT (but not all services delivered over BT's network).

Uswitch deals is also same 18months contract and this deal is for 12months only.
Sid Harper
14 Jan 16#240
Exactly right - the whole point of paying up front is to make you immune from price rises during that term as well as getting a prepayment discount.
As I say, I'd urge anyone who is taking this deal to make sure they're comparing apples to apples. I got the voucher code in the post as a generic door-to-door drop on my street, and it's 18m tie-in with 12m discount. The uswitch deal is 12m, that's it.

It's not a matter of forgetting. It's some sort of deep corporate laziness that prevents Virgin Media from ensuring new estates and blocks are cabled with coax.

maybe a decent offer (since i currently pay the same for 16mb and unlimited anytime phone)
tho i refuse to every have a virgin media contact for the very simple fact they feel the need to send me a snail mail ad every month for the past 8-9 years,(if they can afford to burn thu that many trees they should be able to afford to offer free internet on the spam unasked for ads at everyone's right to breath expense, or they just over charge they current costumers way to much to be able to afford to do so / plant trees for every one you cut down program)

Yeah it's 'upto' 50mb, iirc they only have to guarantee 10% of customers get the advertised speeds too...
I usually get 53mb on a good day sometimes goes down to 37is but my area is oversubscribed like most areas that Vm cover

Anyone know how to get the line rental saver?
Do I need to wait until after it gets installed, or can I do it before?
iMickeyT to drtesseract
14 Jan 161#211
Either or.. Just wait now, once it's installed call 150 speak to customer care, they'll take the £164 add it to your account before your first bill.
PS, the Rental saver can only be done over the phone. That's what I was advised when I did mine.

This is my experience with virgin, which ended in may 2015 ... I joined BT after that ... leaving virgin was one of my best days of 2015
There were few questions raised here and I'll try to explain the similar situations I faced during my 18 Month suffering with them.
I signed up to virgin's 60Mbps (now 100Mbps) 2 years back. There was a deal of Free TV & Tivo with the broadband for £19.50 PM (half price for first 6 months) + Line Rental on a 18 Month contract and there was a £150 quidco. But they started charging me for Tv & Tivo and they didn't apply the 1/2 price for 6months offer.
I called them after couple of months (After quidco was paid) to rectify my bills. Surprisingly no one at their call centre had any knowledge about this offer (it was on virgin's homepage for more than couple of months). I got that sorted after banging my head on the wall for couple of weeks. So keep the screenshots of the offer/ email confirmation safe ... just incase things go wrong.
My package was connected in the end of Oct 2013 after the price hike was announced. They raised my prices by nearly 25% / £5 from feb 2014. I missed the deadline to cancel my contract as I had no idea that my price was going up. Anyways that was not the worst part ... the actual broadband prices went up by only £1 on virgin website, but they raised my tivo prices by £1.50 and my TV package (freeview) by £2. So now I was paying for something I received for free in the first place. It was a nightmare. So make sure that the price hike is not affecting you. You can get it installed after the price hike if you can. Just keep that in mind that the price hike is an Annual thing.
I was going to get one year's line rental saver during the 18M term and I made a mistake in getting that in my last 12 months of the contract. So it was for Apr 2014 - Apr 2015. In oct 2014 they announced another price hike of more than 20%. My free services TV & Tivo gone up again. So this time I called them to cancel the contract before the deadline expired. But I found out that I can't get back my remaining balance of line rental saver. Then I tried to cancel my TV & Tivo but I was told that my broadband contract will be renewed by 12 months. I paid around £28PM for last 4-5 months for a package which started at £19.50. This deal is about a 12 month contract but for few people who are on 18M contract, if you're planning to get a line rental saver, then get it in the first 12 months (you can call them and start that anytime), so that when a price hike is announced later this year, then you can leave them or renegotiate your contract if you're not happy with it.
I use to get 60Mbps before they started upgrading to 100Mbps for free but after that option started showing into my account, my speed went down to 40Mbps. There answer was to upgrade my speed to 100Mbps for free and renew my contract by 12 months. So basically they were trying to renew my contract by throttling my speed.
What I have written might not be very explanatory and maybe very confusing for you to read, so if that's the case just ignore it and just be careful and keep your eyes open.

Just had mine installed on saturday can i still opt in to pay off the line rental for the year?
Also for anyone who is having to pay for an engineer visit, give them a call to cancel and they may send an engineer out for free. Thats what they did for me after a mate of mine told me he was getting a free visit and virgin were charging me £49.95.

I have Sky but have ordered the Virgin Media Big Easy bundle as they couldn't offer a better deal. If you can get someone to refer you, they can get £50 and you also get £50, I used the referral in conjunction with the £50 voucher code. I also went through Quidco so should get £40 cashback. After I had ordered, a few days later I noticed they had an offer for a free Jongo S3 (apparently the RRP is £129.99 but probably worth less) when buying any bundle, so I called them up and they also applied that to the account. I'm planning on using the line rental saver to save approx another £40. Now they just need to install it, hoping that goes smoothly!

Last Wednesday I switched over from BT infinity to Virgins 50mbps super fibre £5 plus line rental via uswitch, because couldn't give me a good deal to stay with them.
More than happy with the package, getting 52 mbps, very good wifi strength from their hub 3 router. Plus living right next to the city of London where my nearest exchange is, never had or have any issues with getting the speeds expected for my flat...with virgin I could get their 200 mbps package, but don't need that much

13 Jan 16#195
100%
My only advice is do NOT use the automated phone line for this (if you find a number to 'set it up').
Just ring 150 and talk to someone to get it done.
I did the automated method last time I renewed, and the upfront credit was applied to my bills rather than the line rental.. was a bit of a mess. But sorted with one phone call to a human...
Works every time I ring up though (been doing it a couple of years since they started it).
I've just got off the phone with Virgin, actually. Called at 23:11 and spoke to chirpy Scottish lady. So ignore people saying you always get "long-distance"...
I have an on-going issue in my area with utilisation. At peak times, my speeds are a little painful. But a quick 3 min phone call (that's all it takes) and my XXL line is discounted to 0 every month.
The beauty of it? It runs absolutely fine before 6pm and after 12midnight - it's just ~50meg at peak. Put pushing 160meg any other times. And I don't pay for it
I got a lovely marketing letter from them last month 'congratulating' me on downloading 967GB last quarter - "making the most of my broadband".
Apparently all will be resolved when I get 200meg next month. New 'pipe' being installed in my area to sort the capacity out.
If not, 3 mins a month to get it for free and still have good speeds when I'm actually allowed to game, etc. is fine with me!
As with all broadband: YMMV

Totally disagree, the max BT can supply around here is 2-3mbps. Virgin can supply 200mbps and people actually get the full 200mbps.
Granted it really does depend on your area, however having been with Virgin Media Broadband (Formerly NTL) for the last 15 years I can't really complain about anything.

I have 17mb with TalkTalk, 'SimplyBroadband' and i'm getting 4mb, I was told by them the highest speed i'm able to receive is 5.2mb although mine has never gone past 4.
I'm paying £25.20 a month for it, comes with a line which I have only ever used to call TalkTalk and complain about my internet not working.

13 Jan 161#188
Both are incorrect!
The Uswitch is Free install regardless. As long as it's a VM service area. Free install. Means free install no £49.95 charge.
OR free Quickstart (self install) IF the address has had VM services for phone and BB in recent years.
I'm sure people don't mean to but there's a lot miss information or people simply getting things mixed up.
This Uswitch offer I found out is purely phone and Bb, TV is not an option. You can't add it on either I tried
Also guys high utilisation in your area thank people with "dodgy box's" and the almighty fire sticks. They hog bandwidth.

Ive just signed up and put installation off until 18th March (I've not moved in yet)
£22.99 X 12 = £275.88
Pay Line rental one off = £164 (saving £51.88) = Total £224
- £50 Voucher Code = Total £174 = £14.50 pm
PLUS I went to Virgin Media site via the topcashback 50mb broadband and phone only offer = £63 cashback (Dont know if this will work?)
If the topcashback offer works (I'm skeptical) That will be £174 - £63 = £111 pa which is £9.25 pm !!!!!

Elsewhere in Europe and the world they are onto 1GB speeds. Meanwhile we are paying a premium for a measly 50MB.
Opening post
SuperFibre up to* 50Mb speeds
Unlimited weekend calls to landlines and Virgin Mobile numbers
Free Virgin media Super Hub
Free setup worth £49.95
Line rental is an additional £17.99 a month but if you pay this as a one-off upfront cost it will come to £164.
Use promotional code VMBRVOU50 or VMVOU50 to get a £50 credit. This is for new customers only.
Therefore, the total cost for this 12 month contract is;
Package cost - £60
Line Rental - £164
Minus the £50 credit
Total - £174 which works out to be £14.50 a month inclusive of line rental.

I would add that I've had an email from the saying the price is going up by £3 from the end of this months. Don't know if that has any effect on this offer??
I found the twitter team really good, someone said the advisors are happy and better to deal with on fridays, because of the impending weekend, there open 7 days a week. So maybe the majority are good at there job and are happy. Same with sky never had an issue with there advisors, or for that matter BT. Your always going to find a lemon.
But maybe if you treat people like you want to be treated, be it face to face or over the phone. You'll all get better results? Just a suggestion from someone working in the banking industry over the last 15 years.

I dont plan on using the phone in any case.
When I checked online they have my contract as £22.99 and not £21.99 as is written down. Presume I will struggle to get this corrected.
And for recording calls.. From the people I know at Virgin. Every call is recorded and randomly spot checked. It's a bit of a shame you'd suggest recording calls showing no trust. Possibly jeopardising that persons job.

That's £80 more, which works out as me paying £8 more per point than people on 0 points! Let's call them what they are: Punishment Points. They punish loyalty and reward disloyalty.
Virgin Media are a joke, loyal Virgin Media customers are the punchline.
IT GOES UP IN PRICE TOMORROW!!!
Did you manage to get free installation as well?
Yes, got free installation as well.
(sorry about the bad quality)
My guess is that you may have started with the 12m product, but if you follow the link from any of the above sites, to simply look at it, it replaces the 12 month deal you originally had with the 18month without making it too obvious. So you may have ordered the 18month deal.
Did you get an order confirmation in email? What does that say?
If the advisor uses the wrong discount code. Your in for 18 months. Instead of 12 months
**This is of course if you order over the phone. If you order online to track cashback.. and you get the 18m letter you chose the wrong option**
Anyway, just got off the phone to a guy from customer relations, he has spoke to his manager and they agreed it must of been as i said and it has been noted on my account that it will be a 12 month contract only - so far VM customer service pretty good!
If I do, I want serious likes....
---------
will need to call to cancel now, even with clear screenshot, they will not agree on 12 month which I signed up for, and it is more or less a waste of time, good luck for people who get 12 month contract
Thank you.
I just tried it again. After the initial post code check, I came up to this page:
and then after applying the code, the page refresh to look like this:
Continue Click ‘Continue’ to get your order sorted." and fill in the rest of the details on missus name ?...
ok i went through this just to see how far i can get...anyway...i do not see where you enter the code for the £50 credit....all went well...but no option or i didnt see it to add the code..hence i idnt order..probably expired..
In addition £60 cashback (TCB) has also tracked.
So, unless I have understood it wrong, I am paying £114 for the whole year, including the line rental. That's £9.50 pm.
12 month cost breakdown:
Cost of BB = £60 (5 x 12)
Line Rental = £164 (paid on the phone after buying)
Sub-Total = £224
Less new customer code= £50
Sub-Total = £174
Less TCB = £60 (*not guaranteed)
TOTAL = £114 or 9.50/month
You also may still be able to get it.
1. Go to the direct deal link (thanks to aaqeel):

4. Continue to the Review and Pay page, but DO NOT 'Place the Order'

7. Call the customer service on 0800 0527588 and confirm your order and pay for your line rental up front - £164

i need virgin broadband and unlimited landline calls but they are not budging? any ideas...
She was trying to make you think it wasnt possible
Has anyone had any similar experience recently? Was she only trying to scare me?
Ring and quote Uswitch for 12m..
PS, If your trying to go through a cashback site and get the £50 credit.. you can't get both.
Uswitch haven't pulled it.. It's a virgin offer in conjunction with uswitch. It's like free advertising!
Just checked COnfirmation.
£50 Bill Credit
£5 a Month 50Mb
12 Month Contract
Free Installation (I don't have wires)
£60.60 TopCashBack Tracked
Thanks op.
They said the bb is £5 a month if the line is paid up front but he said he can't do the £50 credit. Anyone had the same issue?
Also once in basket. Close down browser and click through to virgin from topcashback 60.60 link. Then go straight to basket.
Mine has tracked within 10 minutes.
Won't work. You will need to give 30days notice plus wait 60days before you can be classed as new customer for this deal.
So, I've ordered this uswitch deal in the missus's name (chose new cust to virgin already living at installation address) with an "installation" date 30 days from now. It's gone thru fine n dandy
The missus will phone up in 3 weeks and pay the yearly line rental
17.70 line rental
7.50 bband

We have a Virgin Media Cable Phone line with Talk Anywhere. When I took it out we were an analogue area therefore either had to get Dial Up or get Broadband via a BT Line as I couldn't bear Dial Up. This set up carried on for ages until Virgin upgraded our area to a digital area about 18 months ago. When I then tried to add Broadband to my account I was told I'd have to change my talk anywhere package so that they could add broadband to my account. After speaking to most of the Customer Services team they've all concluded that their systems don't allow anything to be added to our old accounts. So that's why I have a functioning Virgin Media Cable phone line with Talk Anywhere and a BT Openreach Line with Plus Net Fibre.
see my post above
trust pilot and reviewcentre
giving them average of 1/5 *.
Reading the reviews here resonates with this.
Then how did this site gives them 4/5
But having said that if I am the Old very old faithful dog of the ISP , so I have been with Talk-Talk since it's pre-addressors going back to Freeserve
and Bt for Tel line(Which I haven't used since getting my 1st mobile back in 2000 from CPW
Lastly if your not happy with the rip off price why haven't you left them? lots of alternatives to go for, plus if and when you switch back to them, you'll get that new customer package.
Currently on 100M + phone and pay 42 per month (will be 3.49 more from Feb). Called VM yesterday to tell them I am leaving. Without much effort, monthly cost down to 30. May not best deal but worth a call.
But just using it for the 'free' call is good enough.
also BT are doing £100 prepaid, TCB of £115.50 (10 per month plus line rental plus connection) bad thing is i cannot get this as already with BT. going to try and see if my GF can sign up as a new users to get this deal but want to keep the phone number
1. You will be lucky to get 38mb speed
2. Your account will be hacked and bank details published on the net
So conclusion it's not a better deal
Thanks!
2. Based on TalkTalk's recent history I'd be cautious giving them my details.
Can you get a 70mbit Fibre package from BT for £19/month including Line Rental?
BT up their line rental price every 6 months. At least Virgin is a little more sedate at yearly!
For those interested in the Line Rental Saver, I ordered online and called the number I received in the confirmation e-mail to pay for the Line Rental Saver.
Last I did any investigation on this, admittedly a few years ago now, the only ISP with a truly non-restrictive policy i.e. No fair use policy, is Sky. I've been with them a few years now and had no issues whatsoever

Don't forget to use promotional code VMBRVOU50 or VMVOU50 to get a £50 credit. This is for new customers only.
After trying the sales team, the web assistance and even my local store with no luck..... I ended up ringing their retentions department - They told me to sign up for the package I wanted (50Mb Solus) and they just reduced it to the retentions price of £27.99 / mth.
So it maybe a good deal, just research before you commit - also remember you have 14 days (Check with VM as used to be 30 - might be shorter now!!!) to cancel and not pay a penny. Also worth noting as they are different networks don't cancel your existing provider until you're happy with Virgin.
Just waiting for Openreach to upgrade my uneconomically viable cabinet before I can go fibre. (well FTTC)
Check if you go with this, if you qualify for the free upgrade if its available in your area.
A big tip for anyone looking to take this offer, make sure you do it and have the line rental saver done and paid before feb. I think the saver option maybe going OR a change in price:wink:
Good for those that can get it.
http://my.virginmedia.com/traffic-management/traffic-management-policy-thresholds.html
I've been with them a few years now.
Currently pay £18.25 for 50MB fibre without the need for any other charges/phoneline/linerental etc.
So this deal would be ideal for me to haggle. That, and I'm out of contract anyway.
hopefully in 12 months time when my sky offer ends i can rejoin as new customer....
Was getting frustrated with my almost free ADSL from EE at the time (9mbps down, O.5mbps up!) and thought that this was cheap enough to run alongside.
Thinking of cancelling Virgin order now as comments around poor performance make me think I won't be any better off.
Anyone have any experience of service area 15 ... North London? Thanks in advance.
There was an issue with certain web sites loading and ever since then has gone to ****.
We have the top package you can get and in peak time we are lucky to make 8mb now. Affects streaming which we use alot at home. Doing our head in.
Can only guess they have oversubscribed the area or something - complaints are getting nowhere.
but a line rental saver is sort of tying you into a year contract with little bargaining available for any subsequent "bill increases" in that time.
Pretty sure if I call to cancel, they will say fine as they will have had £100+ of line rental up front in their pockets without having to provide the service.
As I say, I'd urge anyone who is taking this deal to make sure they're comparing apples to apples. I got the voucher code in the post as a generic door-to-door drop on my street, and it's 18m tie-in with 12m discount. The uswitch deal is 12m, that's it.
Oftel shouldn't allow this
Letter might be just generic not necessary applicable to you.
If in doubt just ring them up.
Heated
Surely if your going to be living there for the next 15 to 25 years you want to make sure you can get good Internet. It's Due Diligence?
It's a given, you can get Utilities. But not BB so always check. I'd be horrified if I made such a clumsy mistake.
Check the virgin forums
Actually, local councils should be tasked by the govt (in the form the of Ofcom) with refusing planning permission for any large developments without real cable access being built in. Some hope!!
Can now get bt fibre so signed up for that as contract up next month..
Apparently there's a new law if they can't give you the advertised speed you can cut your contract anytime as long as they have tried and failed to resolve the issue
If it's over utilised as was mine you should have no problem cutting it and going with another provider
If i cancel can I sign as a new customer?
Plus I called up when the talk talk deal hit and spoke to pre install cancellations who gave me another two quid off so equivalent to £16.67, and got free caller ID.
I would add that I've had an email from the saying the price is going up by £3 from the end of this months. Don't know if that has any effect on this offer??
I called up to cancel as It's a near 15% monthly increase and I was told as I am in a special discounted offer for 12 months, the price increase does not apply to me until my minimum term ends.
I ended up cancelling mine and going with Talk Talk for £8 a month for up to 36mb and unlimited landline/mobile calls including line rental [black friday deal]
tho i refuse to every have a virgin media contact for the very simple fact they feel the need to send me a snail mail ad every month for the past 8-9 years,(if they can afford to burn thu that many trees they should be able to afford to offer free internet on the spam unasked for ads at everyone's right to breath expense, or they just over charge they current costumers way to much to be able to afford to do so / plant trees for every one you cut down program)
I usually get 53mb on a good day sometimes goes down to 37is but my area is oversubscribed like most areas that Vm cover
Do I need to wait until after it gets installed, or can I do it before?
PS, the Rental saver can only be done over the phone. That's what I was advised when I did mine.
Literally perfect timing, moving into my new flat this weekend and wanted to sign up to virgin.
Also for anyone who is having to pay for an engineer visit, give them a call to cancel and they may send an engineer out for free. Thats what they did for me after a mate of mine told me he was getting a free visit and virgin were charging me £49.95.
More than happy with the package, getting 52 mbps, very good wifi strength from their hub 3 router. Plus living right next to the city of London where my nearest exchange is, never had or have any issues with getting the speeds expected for my flat...with virgin I could get their 200 mbps package, but don't need that much
My only advice is do NOT use the automated phone line for this (if you find a number to 'set it up').
Yes, you can sign up to it at any time.
My contract with TalkTalk finishes in February, and want to snap this up! @@@@@@@@@@@@@
Pay £42 a month for full sky package.
Will never pay more and never have.
It's not hard to get the deals every time renewal is up.
