Richersounds are doing

Tannoy V4i Floorstanders
Tannoy VC Centre
Tannoy V1i Rears

all comes in at £310.

bargain imo, since the V4i's along last year were like £300. This is however my first Home Cinema, so audio snobs don't bother!!

Tannoy make good speakers. I can't vouch for these ones, but unless the company have gone really downhill they should be alright. Richer sounds don't tend to sell trash either (not saying they sell the best, just generally not trash). Fair price for a full setup.

Great deal.
Its fascinated me for years how many favour image over sound. For me sound is 50% of the experience, possibly more. I have had a 5.1 system since I could first afford it in 2001 and will never go back to watching a TV screen without one. Forget about stereo speakers and sound bars, they are incomparible to 5.1 or more.

I so agree with this post.
Having decent sound (5.0 or 5.1 surround) is more than 50% of a great cinema experience to me too.
(... and yes I have a BK Monolith DF in my set-up too, but that only gets switched on for movies and quality drama)

will definately work with floorstanders and to be honest unless you have a fully detached house with large rooms, adding the sub as well as floor standers will be over kill. I have stand mounts so I need the sub.

I have used these speakers for over 6months and found them beefy enough without a subwoofer. The floorstanders can go to a low enough frequency and pack a punch. I've not known of the setting to change them to 'Large' - something I presume I need to do within the amp settings (there's so much to go through when you set them up), but I'll check that bit out

I purchased the tannoy dc6t not so long ago and required a set of spikes and pads since they were missing from the box purchase at richersounds. Unfortunately after contact Tannoy, they did not have any spares to purchase. Feedback was prompt and they also said if they come in, in future that they would contact me:

"Congratulations on your new purchase, however, as the range has been discontinued, we no longer have these parts in stock to provide as spares. I shall keep a note of your details and should anything become available through a return I shall be sure to let you know."

You don't need a center or a sub, they just enhance the experience and the sub can reduce strain on the AV/amp and speakers, depending on crossover settings.

Cracking deal, I had a pair of Tannoy 633 D30s for 18 yrs until 1 of the drivers went last year, I replaced them with some MA Bronze5s and a matching centre, but the Tannoys were excellent, if I could have repaired em they would still be in my lounge!
Halloway
10 Jan 16 #15
I use my system primarily for music so I don't miss either the centre or the sub, although it would sometimes nice to have the latter when watching movies. The centre channel is still there 'virtually' so I can boost the gain on that channel if dialogue is indistinct or background music and FX are too noisy (nothing to do with my getting old and my hearing going!)
matlock67
10 Jan 16 #17
A subwoofer makes all the difference, you can't get the .1 without a sub, its a soundtrack in its own right, regardless of the crossover settings.
rev6
10 Jan 16 #18
A phantom center works when directly in the middle of the fronts, but if you're off-center, it ruins the experience somewhat for me, compared to a dedicated center, but again, still not required for an enjoyable experience.

Of course, the sub makes a big difference with .1 content but it's not required, either due to money or as the OP said, neighbours. I highly recommend one though

I have to have satellites as our lounge is not big enough for them but i would love proper floor standing speakers, but i have to say my Bostons sound amazing for such little speakers they are very good and the sub rattles doors even on low i would never go back to just a TV its so much more immersive.

I had a Technics All in one hi fi system with 5.1 and DVD player built in. Cost me £700 in 2001. Sold it last month for £100, still worked perfectly.
SC-DV170
Then I just used that as a hi Fi for a while and replaced it with Sony all in one DVD 5.1 system which was somewhat better. Gave that away.

Now I have an Yamaha RXV675 with
a Monitor Audio Bronze BX2 5.1

10 Jan 16 #21
Rev, I ran a 5.1 system for a while without a sub and sound was ok, however I added a very decent second hand miller and kreisel sub and it transformed the whole experience. Just demo a system with and without a sub and you'll never go back.
The only issue I have with Av amps is normal stereo sound is nowhere near as good as a dedicated stereo amp, but you can't have it all, I don't play stereo music with the sub on.
r4963 to matlock67

You could link up a stereo amp to the AV amp to make up for this though. That's my next plan.

rev6
10 Jan 16 #27
I don't agree with that at all. Having a sub and setting the speakers crossover to 80Hz is a much better experience. Even if the floorstanders can handle it, it puts more strain on the AV and speakers and can have an overall impact on the rest of the sound. Unless you have extremely capable system and speakers that have subs built-in for LFE

10 Jan 16 #30
I know what you mean, that's why i ultimately I just went with stand mounts/ book shelfs with a sub in my system. But you could still get this with a view to getting a sub in the near future. For me in terms of space and noise I could not have floorstanders and a sub.
Having said the above I think the florstanders without the sub will prob sound better in stereo music than my stand mounts with a sub.

I'm still learning everything, a month ago I absolutely knew nothing about setting up a sound system.

Am I best changing the crossover frequency on my amp to 80Hz for my front and centre (they start from 40Hz), and turning the doublebass off. I eventually left to what Audyssey set it up as, with full band and double bass & then setting my sub to 80Hz crossover
rev6
10 Jan 16 2 #34
Set all speakers to 80Hz if you have a sub. Subs crossover is usually 120Hz by default as the LFE channel goes up to 120Hz so I'd set it to that if you've changed it unless you think it sounds better at 80Hz.
Personally I would never use double bass, let the sub(s) handle all the low frequencies.

If you prefer listening to music as 2.0, then most AV's have "Direct Audio" or "Pure Audio" which sets the fronts as "Full" or "Large" as well as other things which is quite nice too. This works for multi-channel content as well but bypassing any calibrations.
matlock67
10 Jan 16 #35
bullet, you will get differing opinions on crossover levels for the sub, plenty of experts contradict each other.
theres plenty of detail on the audyssey forums (google it), some say even if you have floorstanders you should set them as small so that the sub does all the low end, depends how good your sub is?
tebbo65 to matlock67
11 Jan 16 #64
I'm experimenting with crossover settings at the mo. Absolute mine field of contradiction!!! Some say set it higher for better detail, some say lower to minimise gaps. My fronts and surrounds go down to 55hz so I've set crossover to 60hz.

Lol i can't ignore the neighbours. So do i just simply set the Floorstanders to ''large'' to handle the sub side of things
john184
10 Jan 16 1 #51
Full range floorstanders with proper amplification will easily beat 90% of the home cinema setups out there. Even cheap subs (which can go lower than the floorstanders) start around £400 which is a lot for just occasional LFE and comes with the added problems of correct placement and integration.
BK subs aren't the value they once we're and SVS arguably offers a better price:performance ratio.

That's correct, however if you do decide to purchase one I'd certainly take a look at this:
https://www.audiovisualonline.co.uk/product/5058/tannoy-ts2-10-gloss-black-subwoofer/

Its a great sub for the price in my opinion, I've had mine for 3 years now and I'm very happy with it, goes really low without distorting and its quite loud lol. For £300 you'd be hard pressed to find something much better.

In case you're wondering my setup is as follows:
Front & Rears: Tannoy Mercury V1I
Center: Tannoy Mercury VCI
Sub: Tannoy TS2.10
Amp: Sony STR-DN850

Probably going to pick up a Subwoofer sometime thanks for the advice Zaim, however i haven't even got it all setup yet so i'll have to see if it's worth spending an extra £300 on a sub to go with it all
topss to Plasmachaser
11 Jan 16 #59
Thing is, if you don't try a sub in your setup, you won't really know what it adds. A lot of people seem to think it just adds some loud thuds etc, but in reality if placed and setup correctly it adds a completely different dimension to the audio of a movie soundtrack. And not just loud blockbusters.

Have a word with a local AV shop. I remember when I was starting out with this gear, my local (not really local, closest) Richer Sounds were great and 'loaned' me a couple of sub's to try out. It's always best to hear them in your own setup, rather than someone else's.
matlock67 to Plasmachaser
11 Jan 16 #61
plasma, on the tannoy precision thread you quote you have a better value system, how can you come to that conclusion if yours isnt setup yet, same goes that setting fronts to large will in effect mean you dont need a sub.

i would agree with this, i auditioned this and it did sound good, it will be better than the tannoys without a sub (the tannoy floorstanders will be better for stereo music though), so should represent better value.
The only way to know for sure is to audition them to see if they work well with your amp
matlock67
11 Jan 16 #65
tebbo, if you have audyssey, let that do the config, you should never (according to the experts) lower the crossovers from what its measured, you can raise them upto a max 120hz likely best 80hz as thats the THX default.
for music i disable the sub in the settings so full range just goes to my fronts

I thought these speakers would be cheaper by now.

you'll get a good sound out of what youve got, theres plenty of advice on avf forums, what extra do you get by running high fronts?
rev6
11 Jan 16 #89
THX recommends 80Hz crossover for the speakers.
For the sub, the LFE channel goes up to 120Hz so a good place to start.
At the end of the day use the settings that sound better to you.
tebbo65
11 Jan 16 #90
Front highs are meant to output overhead sound (lightning/helicopters etc) processed by Dolby Pro Logic llz, a prelude to Atmos/DTS X. TBH it doesn't do a very good job, no distinction in sound. I only tried it as I had a couple of spare speakers, can't fit rears and wanted to make full use of the amp outputs. Thing is, once I hooked them up it adds so much to the front sound stage when there not on you really notice the difference. Hence I grabbed the 9.0's on a Richer Sounds deal. Hope that sheds some light :smirk:

Nothing I can really point you to. I got given an old receiver a while ago, it's 7 years old now. Onkyo Txnr905
So I decided to get round to putting it to use and get some decent speakers for it, my Christmas present to myself.
Found some fronts and a sub through gumtree. Tannoy R3 Fronts and a JMLab SW700 Subwoofer, it's 300w and way bigger then I expected when I went to pick it up.
Experimented with them a bit. Research indicated that when buying a centre it's very important to get the matching centre to the fronts, or something close. Managed to find a Tannoy Eyris C (the model above my fronts)
Then just got some Tannoys DC6 from Richer Sounds as my rears.
Only got given the receivers mic last week, to auto calibrate my system.

A few things I've learned, that I didn't know a month ago-

Bi-wire & Bi-amping. Just found out last night out my receiver can bi-amp my fronts if I only use up to a 5.1 system. So I've just set that up.

Nearly all HD sources have to be connected to the Receiver through HDMI as nothing else can really carry anything past a stereo signal.
If possible it's best if the source can bitstream to the receiver, so the receiver can do the decoding. Apprently my Xbox can't bitstream without loss.My receiver doesn't support ARC, so have to connect my TV through Optical, which optical can only carry stereo. And I'm currently having trouble bitstreaming my computer.

It's Important all the listening presets are set up correctly. Do you want your stereo inputs been played as just stereo, or stereo through front and back speakers, or do you want it synthesised to a 5.1 system. Nor do you really want a 5.1 signal being played in stereo or a reprocessed 5.1

Crossover frequency, between speakers and sub, looks like a common thing is to set everything to 80Hz.

Not many movies/sources are natively recorded in 7.1, so not really worth upgrading to if it's a hassle. Also it's not really feasible in my room. Also been reading about 2nd subwoofers, but also not feasible for me.

plasma, I dont think many have actually bought the kit youve posted, but we've all had a good gab about 5.1 systems and setups. RS are a good outfit who give sound advice and the warranties are good, ive bought loads of kit off them over the last 30 years.

they will sound ok, but you will need to budget for a sub to get a proper surround system started.

Hello i'm the original poster andddd something tells me

i've had the Speaker Bargain of the year with this.
matlock67
13 Jan 16 #110
Plasma, you setup your system yet? End of line equipment is generally sold off cheaper to get rid of the last bit of stock?
I bought tannoy eyris centre and rears (retail price well over £1k) which are much better than your kit a few years ago for less than £140 then added tannoy dc6 fronts a year or so ago for £180, so not much more for much higher range tannoys.
Plenty of good deal about over the last few years on hifi.
Plasmachaser to matlock67
13 Jan 16 #111
except i have proof of my deal and you don't, your move
Plasmachaser
13 Jan 16 #112
Also care to explain why you think your 7 year old eyris bookshelfs are better than Tannoy V1i's bookshelfs.

and why you think your DC6 bookshelfs are better than a pair of V4i Floorstanders?
rev6 to Plasmachaser
13 Jan 16 #113
These are low-end budget Tannoy loudspeakers. Better speakers do exist.
Plasmachaser
13 Jan 16 #114
Still doesn't explain why he thinks a pair of bookshelf speakers beats a pair of Foorstanders.

Also i'm failing to see how these Floorstanders are considered 'budget' when, they've easily been selling for £350. And were launched as £500 a pair.

Not one to brag but, budget speakers don't get 700 odd heat on here. Budget is simply your perspective
topss to Plasmachaser
14 Jan 16 #115
The 'budget' category doesn't work like you seem to be implying. All speakers are not in competition with each other. These are indeed budget speakers in the context of the market segment they are targeted at.
rev6 to Plasmachaser
14 Jan 16 #124
To be honest, even places selling these speakers class them as budget. It's not something just pulled out of a hat.

That depends. Floorstanders are great. Large loudspeakers tend to give a fuller sound and soundstage. That doesn't mean a high quality pair of bookshelfs on stands won't sound better though, but you also have to remember, audio quality is subjective.

You're mistaking budget and poor. It's not a bad thing. They are an affordable entry into the market, above say the small egg loudspeakers or the DX1's.

No one is saying they are or it's a bad deal, but better quality loudspeakers do exist.
Plasmachaser
14 Jan 16 #116
Don't see them as budget unfortunately
topss to Plasmachaser
14 Jan 16 #117
Some people wouldn't consider £20 Bush speakers as budget and others may not consider a pair of Tannoy Prestige Kingdom Royal's at £40,000 as particularly expensive.
Plasmachaser
14 Jan 16 #118
Still, these aren't budget speakers..

You're just being a troll now and an audio snob, do you want knocking out
topss to Plasmachaser
14 Jan 16 #119
I guess your comment in the opening description pretty much sums up why you would think that...

700 heat mate. For budget speakers
matlock67 to Plasmachaser
14 Jan 16 #121
good on yer plasma, enjoy your new budget kit, when youve managed to set them up??
remember to keep saying to yourself, i dont need a sub, and floorstander's are always better than bookshelfer's.
Plasmachaser
14 Jan 16 #122
700 Degree's

and Floorstanders are better than bookshelf speakers.
matlock67 to Plasmachaser
14 Jan 16 #127
argument stops here as you clearly do not have a clue, bigger doesn't mean best im afraid, ive also owned decent mission floorstanders and run in a 5.0 config, thats why i know regardless of fronts you need a subwoofer to get the full home cinema effect.

you still haven't answered have you set yours up yet?

How are these compared to monitor mass 5.1

Much larger for a start
matlock67 to swadhwani
14 Jan 16 #129
go to your local RS and audition them, most of the RS deals are in store only so stock is limited and you may find that all the tannoys aren't in stock. as someone posted early in the thread check out these as well http://www.richersounds.com/package/speakers/speaker-packages/pah01309

the only issue you may find with satelite setups are you need to have your sub on when playing stereo music as the sub deals with the lower end as freq response of sats are 80hz and above
topss
14 Jan 16 #128
He knows best. After all his deal has reached 700°. Never mind the fact it's his " first Home Cinema". Or is it.....

from 1 year 9 months ago..

I bought my sub woofer second hand from a guy who bought a new full setup of monitor audio speakers (gold or possibly silver series), he demoed it to me and it was the best sounding home cinema I've ever heard, it was amazing, but so was the price tag of over £6k, just for speakers, his full system must have been £20k.

15 Jan 16 #132
I bought a pair of these, from the link, yesterday from my local RS shop, but haven't had chance to set them up yet..

Has anybody got the full 5.0 speaker set at this price? Seems the op did but hasn't set them up yet?
Do you need help connecting 2 wires per speaker, just ask there are plenty of people who have experience.

not seen proof of this deal, youve only linked up 1 element, in store only so likely have to scour various shops to get all the elements.

Will sound ok for a budget package.
Plasmachaser
16 Jan 16 #140
They had plenty in other stores when i called. They even had the black version of these set. Richersounds apparently bought the last remaining stock from Tannoy.

I bought a pair of the Floorstanders in this deal, and coupled with the Pioneer vsx 930, I must say they sound awesome when watching a film, almost, if not cinema sound.
My other half is absolutely delighted with them.
