OK. So for a 48" TV at this price WOW. Prices of 4K are really dropping fast!? Are they getting ready for 8K is my question...

**update** 16/01/2016 15:07

Add "TENNEROFF" for £10 off (or use code at bottom for £20 off)
£75 cashback

Total price £303 BARGAIN
Good reviews as well.

notes:

Built in WiFi for Netflix and BBC iPlayer etc.
HDMI 2.0 for 60Hz 4K

Use code 'JANUARY20' for £20 off rather than the £10 'TENNEROFF' code to bring it down to £303

Why should it, that's the price it will end up costing, doesn't look like you have to jump through hoops to get the cash back either.

16 Jan 16 3 #4
Because someone might think, 'great it's £313, I'll have that'. They then find they have to stump up an extra £85 and have to claim it back, which for some is seen as grief.
Hukd generally tries to emulate best practice in the industry with its descriptions of deals, so think of the description as being something that should equally be able to be used by a company for an advert on TV.
Would they get away with telling you only the pre-cashback price rather than the full story? I don't think they would personally.

It's a shame the AmEx £30 off a £300 credit @ AO expired :disappointed:

Where's the £85 come from? There's £75 cash back and a tenner off code which is instant! £313 is the price you end up paying for the TV!
brookysm

Oh and advertising a price after cash back is perfectly common and fully endorsed by the ASA, Currys and PC World along with Manufacturers like Lenovo do it all the time.

16 Jan 16 1 #8
Apologies £75, it's early! I'm not disputing that you may well get it for the price but you will put people's noses out of joint by not letting them know in the title that they will have to pay a higher price and have to claim their £75 back. People who have poor cash flow will be particularly hit by this, even though you would argue that buying a TV should be the last thing they should be doing if they are cash poor.

It would state 'after cashback' though, which this title does not do, that's the whole point I'm making.

Great price. As for the cash back, AO will email you a claim form after delivery. Fill it in and email it back. No 'hoops' to jump through. Great company to deal with.

You hate saving £75 by typing in your details into a partially filled form and hitting 'submit'?

Takes all of 2 minutes. AO are probably the best company CS wise to deal with, even better than Amazon imo.

And just to answer this part of the OP "Are they getting ready for 8K is my question…".

Not really. The more people who buy 4k, the cheaper it will get. Plus there is/will always be a gradual decline in retail prices for all mainstream tech. The next 'big' thing we will be guided towards will not be 8K but HDR. So get ready for a slew of marketing and slogans implying how you can't and won't be able to live without a HDR TV.

Has anyone used this as a monitor at 4k/60hz
4:4:4 chroma is probably too much to ask for at this price,
but - what is the lag like?
stuellis
16 Jan 16 #29
It's a good deal BUT cheap 4k TV's have poor 1080p upscaling and any 1080p or other resolutions has to be unscaled to the native 4k of the screen. So the vast majority of the content you play on the screen will look worse than a Full HD TV. Unless your really willing to invest in a high end 4k TV it's just not worth it and even then with OLED 1080p looking so great it's hard to justify 4k at all unless monies no object.
Enverex to stuellis
16 Jan 16 #31
That shouldn't be true - 4k resolution is exactly 3x 720p and 2x 1080p which means it can scale perfectly (i.e. without having to use interpolation). That actually makes it better than a 1080p screen for scaling content because a 1080p TV cannot scale 720p content perfectly.

That said, I can't imagine the overall quality of a £300 4K TV actually being good...

topss to MrShed
16 Jan 16 #36
What are you asking? Does it up-scale non 4K upto 4K. How else would it fill the screen? Or were you expecting black bars all around a 1080p image?

If you were asking on the quality of up-scaling, then I'm sure someone who owns one will be able to answer.

16 Jan 16 #39
My Response to this is that it will more than likely be a lower overall quality than a good Full HD tv. Surely a cheap panel with low Hz.

I mean sure, it CAN run 4K but I feel this is just a trap for people thinking that it's equal to the Sony/Samsung/Panasonic etc equivalents. I haven't voted Vold, but my advice would be to spend the money on a better quality full HD, rather than falling for the trap of 'Oh it's a 4k!!, Must be Good then!'

Mini Review

I've been using this for most of the day and im pretty happy with it, first off, no weird issues that the phillips TV had, I've had and returned two other 50 inch TVs this month and didn't need to adjust my TV stand but for this it was necessary, the feet that hold up the TV are pretty close to each edge so keep that in mind.

Picture quality is good, HD and 4K look no better or worse then the 50 inch 4k sony i had, navigating the smart apps is a little slow, nothing terrible but its worth mentioning, i've only tested youtube and bbc news but both worked well on wifi.

the TV has two menus, options menu for picture mode, equalizer, sleep timer, energy saving, info booklet, there is also a system menu for everything else, the only reason i mention this is opening the options menu is slower for some reason even though it displays less settings, its nothing major though

surprisingly the TV downloaded an over the air update on its own and only required me to press okay to install it now or later, this is pretty amazing coming from a unknown brand when a more expensive phillips requires manual updates via USB

The humm

The humming does not emanate from the speakers it is coming from the inside of the tv it changes pitch when a menu is activated on screen, the pitch and volume of hum changes when different screen settings are selected , eg cinima, game, dynamic ect,of course when the tv volume is turned to a low normal listening level the humming noise is drowned out by tv sound however this tv is in my bedroom so view at night an tv sound is kept low so the hum is heard on silent scenes as well as browsing youtube when no sound from tv is emitted.

Got the replacement this morn 8pm full marks to AO for fast friendly service and this one same lol so it must me my ears attuned to such frequencies, bat ears, It seem to be when screen setting is set to Neutral and Cinema the hum changes pitch between them 2 settings yet vanishes when other 3 or 4 settings are selected sport, game , dynamic. it not over whelming hum it very much background as if ther was a tiny mosketto in corner of room and is drowned out by tv volume
It only become a factor if an when I used screen as a monitor for pc/laptop/tablet, or periods of silence on a program even then for both you have to be withing a few feet to hear it. I did have a dead pixel that was only visible when tv was on black screen say selecting an unused hdmi input but not visible when viewing tv and would not have caused me an issue, I also did have grey scaling on left had side of screen on 1st tv visible on white screens which although is present on tv 2 it is no way as much as tv an to be expected with budget tv . So It was not a complete waste time in my mind to get another delivered and if anything serves to show what fine fast service AO have as I was on phone 2pm yesterday an the replacement was here 7:55am next day .

I really chuffed at image quality ok it lacks realism in colour of my Sony but its only as I have the sony to compare t.o I notice this tv is 100hz and I watched football and zero stutter drag at the £313 promotion i got it at its a steal.

^^

Have you tried adjusting one of the presets to settings similar/same as one that does make a noise? Or use (if it has one) a 'user' preset and adjust that till it suits you. If its only on some presets, then the hum is probably from one of the built in image processing components, that gets switched on or off depending on the preset used.

Sorry if that doesn't make too much sense, I just read it back to myself
des147
22 Jan 16 #76
I could but im not lol to be fair Im going to put it to back of my mind forget about it. As i say you really do have to be standing within 2 feet of tv with volume down to hear it, even if been used as a pc a monitor an no sound emitted im 7 ft away from tv an hardly heard. I dont wish to deter anyone buying this tv as it really is a good image at the £313 promo price I got it at anyone with a man cave looking for cheap solid proformer for fast action football in the summer Euro's search ends here.

Doing what you say makes no difference it only effects both Neutral an Cinema preset when I choose Game or Dynamic or Sport preset it goes silent.... so I compromised by setting tv to Sport but adjust the setting to what neutrals preset as are which is contrast 95% brightness 50% sharpness 50% colour 60% an I have a silent tv :O) with a image that pleases my eyes ..result ....hopefully for a long life

I will let you know if it changes in the coming days if as mentioned the hum vanishes after tv had a period of burn in so to speak but even if it dont It just means I have 3 presets dont hum 2 that do an really the presets can all be changed to match others so nothing lost.
The image quality and price makes up for simply having to tweek lol.

I noticed when I looked today on AO.com the same tv has £30 cashback an when used with january20 code that £50 saving yet its mentioned that its still offering £75 at checkout an confirmed on phone says buyer so whipp it up before its gone.

Ok, so setting the TV to "Games" picture mode removes pretty much all input lag (down to a very tiny amount) but it also removes the ability to change contrast, brightness, sharpness and color. The problem with that is that sharpness is set to about 70 by default which is very high. Any ideas to work around that?

A) Found a way to adjust brightness/contrast/sharpness in Game mode (other modes are ruled out due to input lag).
B) Found a way to disable the effect used on scaling the image? (it shouldn't be using a filter when converting 1080P > 4K).
