My nearest Crown Carvery on Grane road in Haslingden is awful.
Luckily we have 2x Tobys in Bury where I live
When I watch Bury FC away at Morecambe I always go to your Morecambe Toby for a pre match meal, one of the best in the country surprised you don't use your local Toby !
jonboy32 to perkypig
6 Jan 16 #38
You probably just prefer the frozen veg at Crown compared to the fresh veg at Toby.
Or maybe you prefer the less fatty and cheaper top rump/topside/silverside of beef at crown, compared to the rolled rib of beef at Toby

The Crown in Fulwood (Preston) is dreadful in my opinion.
The Toby at the shrimp in Morecambe is one of the best I've been to, the downside being that they have a habit of forgetting the drinks order.

Maybe the Crown has improved in the year or so since I last went.
Plus tastes differ.

People on here comparing with Crown Carvery have to realise they are EXACTLY the same chain of owners in Mitchell & Butler.

No doubt all the meat and veg produce is sourced the same, the only difference is on location...you will find one Crown Carvery better than another, same with Toby Carvery.

Personally on visiting either I have not found any difference in food quality with the carvery.

6 Jan 16 1 #91
Same company but totally different quality, Toby use turkey crowns on the bone, crown use boneless joints, home made Yorkers at Toby's , frozen ones at crown, Toby is a lot nicer imo

Crown carvery was £2.99 but has been increasing for the last 2 years so we stopped going its over priced now as its hit and miss if you get a decent tasting dinner or not. we often walk in have a look to see how it looks and walk out again when it looks dry and reheated and often ask other customers who are already eating if its worth staying or not.

6 Jan 16 4 #40
Mostly true. I am one of them delivery drivers, and can confirm that yes, all the veg except tates and onions are frozen at Crown, compared to nearly all fresh (bar peas and cauli) at toby. Crown turkey is frozen-fresh at toby. Top rump beef joints at toby compared to silverside at crown. You basically get what you pay for at either-and both good grub and value.

Thats a good price for a good carvery. We were looking forward to going to a Toby a week ago with some friends, unfortunately they changed the place to a Beefeater. Being veggie we were dismayed but thought it may be OK. The Beefeater was one of the worst meals I ever had, the sort of thing a certain chef would spit out.

6 Jan 16 1 #82
Most likely financial reasons. Sundays been most folks day off at work so expect to be much more busy than regular days. They are serving English dishes, not Indian or Chinese and most UK folks tend to cook Sunday roasts on Sundays at home for lunch or dinner, not during the week. Who has got the time to do that, right? Folks been lazy sods who can't be ass to cook at home for a family roast but eat out instead. Nothing wrong been lazy but that's a choice so expect some restrictions or flexibilities from businesses who or may not want that kind of business. You're paying for convenience end of.

How about TC charged extra like 25% for the weekends from customers to pay for extra staff cover at weekends. You would like that won't you? Can't afford it then skill up, trade careers for better pay or cut back on luxuries that you can give up.

Another alternative is go to home & cook it yourself. Time is money right?

Generally you can choose the meat out of four (Beef, Pork, Turkey and another), I generally go for all four and supersize for an extra £1. Then you help yourself to veg etc, which you can restack on at any point. I must say if your going super for lunch, then skip breakfast, and cancel you dinner! toby carvery is not good value as they slice the meat so thin it is more like ham than a sunday roast. even their upgrade isn't that great. the only nice thing they have are the selection of vegetables.

not sure why this deal is so hot, considering the poor quality of the meals which is not even worth £5.
shakerstevens to mutley1
6 Jan 16 #86
Think it comes down to the individual branch, we have two Tobys in my home town, the one that opened recently is very tight with the meat, the other one however is far more generous. Try another branch whilst the cheap deal is on, give them a chance.

Remember this is cooked fresh food, not processed reheated McDonalds rubbish, so one branch will be different to the next as one chef and his team might be a lot better than another. So unfortunately some are not as good, just as the case would be if you and I made the same meal, mine might not be as nice as yours!

PMSL, any more thicker would be called a meat steak.

Gotta admit, Wow , I guess you have never ran your own business in your life with overheads to pay. Staff work for free, free business rates, free supplies, free maintenance, right? Tsk, tsk, another who will always be working for a Boss for life till you drop dead but God forbid, right? No one likes a dead customer who doesn't come back for more.

The self righteous of a generation (maybe more in my life experience) of folks in this country who believes that an entltlement of a thicker slice of meat would satisfy a greedy so so who staves themself (missing meals) to the point of low blood sugar levels for a big slap up hot piping meal that could feed an small army with unlimited veg.

My word, as a long member of HUKD, what I have learned over the years are some folks expectations in here of tonights' OP deal are damn right rude to the point of been quite offensive, comparing a lousy £3 Boots/Tesco crisps, drinks & cold sandwiches to TC hot piping meals. Flaming liberty these cheap ass misers.

Get real, you do know that meats always costs more than veg or are you trying to be ignorant. Like most things in life, always cheaper to do it yourself.

Also, it sounds like you're suggesting food is tastier the hotter it is? If you'd been to our Toby then you would know that is not the case - if someone gave me a voucher for a free Toby carvery or a free salad, then I'd take the salad every time.
veedubjai
6 Jan 16 #100
My preference when it comes to meal times is hot meals first then cold meals second when given an option. It's a personal choice & no one is forcing you to buy & eat it, right? Nothing wrong with cold meals as I like them too but the majority do tend to compare like for like when it comes to products or services here.

Anyway, who the heck many folks go to TB just for salad. Yes, a tiny marginal group. TB's biggest clientele from their food service are the salad eaters. TB are in the black in business due to large salad customer base in their food service?

Come on, please don't make me laugh.

Make you laugh about what? Why are you suddenly banging on about how many people go to a TC just for a salad, and how much a restaurant makes from them? And who is TB? You seem to be having an argument with yourself!

All i said was that given a choice between receiving a voucher for a free Toby Carvery or for a free salad (to be clear the salad is from anywhere else but TC), then I would choose the salad. This is based on the quality of food I have received from my local Toby. Maybe to be clear I should have said for a free carvery somewhere else instead of a free salad, but I thought the point I was making about my local TC was pretty obvious.

No idea why you felt you had to rant about the profitability of salad customers to a business, but hope it made you feel better!

why is this so hot? You can get 20% off food vouchers from the web and they give you another each time you eat. That a far better deal as it covers all diners Inc. children. Certainly at our local where a cavery is only £5.99 anyway. We went yesterday and its improved a lot. Proper roast potatoes, decent puddings and pigs etc. good value. Refillable drinks too (soft). much better than the endless steam of cheap generic pub food with plastic chips and nuggets for kids.

Yeah I must admit the 20% off deal is usually better. The 20% deal is only if the food (not drinks) part of the bill is over £15. If me and one other person are going then the 2 for £10 works out a little bit cheaper. If I was to add on a dessert or more than 2 of us go then the 20% off is a better deal.

I've just read the first page of notes and haven't noticed a post on this so thought I'd post:

Has anyone seen the actual voucher and noticed that is says 'the bearer and up to three guests can have two main meals'? I'm wondering how that might work out as to me at least it implies that you can get up to 4 meals for £10. Am I mistaken? The only alternative to that which makes sense to me is you could have 2 main meals between 4 people, and surely that isn't what the voucher is advocating.

Thanks for any clarification.
Phila4 to magictom
7 Jan 16 #121
It's very badly written but I'm pretty sure what it means is the voucher will cover 2 people getting a carvery for £10 or 4 people getting a carvery each for £20 (2 x £10 obviously). So £5 each. If it was three people then you would use the voucher for 2 people and pay full price for the third.

That's my take on it and I can't see it would work any other way, but I agree it's confusing.

Can someone help me here please.

The voucher says, "entitles the bearer and up to 3 guests to two main meals for £10"

So, does that mean 4 people can order 2 main meals for £10 each making 8 main meals in total?

7 Jan 16 #132
At the risk of being a philistine, what makes Toby carvaries good?

I ask only as our local has been taken over recently, it was a crown carvery and has now reopened as a Toby (the nearest after that is a good 30 miles away so never had one before) and the crown carvery was about £4 last time we had one. What makes Toby be more expensive even when on offer? Is it more meat or something? Thanks
shakerstevens to Smickan
7 Jan 16 1 #146
Both Crown and Toby are owned by the same parent company. Crown is cheaper but most of the products are heated from frozen. Toby are a little more expensive but all cooked fresh apart from peas apparently. This is according to delivery drivers who work for the company and posted on the first 1 or 2 pages of this thread. Having tried both Crown and Toby many a time and Toby being the better of the two it doesn't surprise me that crown is cooked from frozen and Toby is from fresh.

What's people's beef *excuse the pun* with Toby? I've been to both in Bristol for the past 10 years and never had an issue.

We had a Christmas meal at whitch for 13 and it was bloody awful, the excuse was given the manager had walked out and took the staff as well, still waiting for head office to reply

7 Jan 16 #134
Does it include a pudding as well, if not then ur not saving
shakerstevens to nelly_noo_noo

You mean because there are better deals with pudding? true, but then if you just want the carvery and a drink then this is a better deal.
magictom
7 Jan 16 #137
Clearly not since someone else has also asked this question in a relatively short space of time. I did miss out the 'to' when typing it out but I read it on the voucher. Another poster agreed it was badly written. Why write an offer that offers up to 4 people 2 meals? For 2 of those 4 people there apparently is no offer - just pay full whack or watch the other 2 people eat haha. Therefore it does appear to be badly written and I think some clarification was in order.

Well IMO they make up for the low price cooked foods by expensive drinks.....which I supppose it's fair enough for a profit. So if you want to save money just have a coffee after your meal.

Do you have to have both meals at the same time?
Can you eat one and take the other away?
veedubjai to smiler594
8 Jan 16 #170
Yes, so take a friend/family with you & no, they don't do doggy bag meals so you could take all the unlimited veg for seconds at home. Alternatively, if you're one that who doesn't care about any self respect or humiliation. You could try to arrive early afternoon have 1st meal then sit around all day (they do have free wifi + you may have to remain within the dining area & not leave the premises) relaxing until late afternoon to finish the 2nd meal & still pay £10 but better to ask though as it most likely be at managers' discretion while trying to serve other respectful patrons.

Be aware you may get the complimentary tsk tsk shameful on you look for doing that but at least you'll get the chance to hear from the managers' mouth of past rude customers testing their patience & tolerance for unacceptable behaviour.

Anyone known to be been banned from TC?

They used to have a takeaway promotion years ago but not any more. Promotions can come & go at any time with T&C's like this.

There is one at Tottington which my wife and I quite like, and another at the top of Ainsworth Road, which although not bad, service is soooo slow
shakerstevens
7 Jan 16 #157
Totally agree with you! Loved the Tottington one, always have. When the Ainsworth one opened just before Christmas I was hoping for great things but as you say the service is slow and the meat portions are very small, someone in management is obviously trying to save money ! I live slightly nearer the Tottington/Greenmount one anyway so I'll be sticking with that one

But there is a vegi option, they will cook a vegi dish (often a vegi pie or other) to order but then you still have full access to the rest of the vegetables on the self serve area.

I live less than half a mile from the Ainsworth Road one.
We find that the staff at the Tottington one are generally more attentive.
To be fair to the staff at the Ainsworth Road one, they were all quite new in the job just before Xmas and we gave them the benefit of the doubt.
We havnt been back there yet though.

Have you been to the Rose and Crown which is the next pub up from the Ainsworth Arms?
We have never had a bad meal in there. However the place can get pretty full..and bloody hot!
shakerstevens
7 Jan 16 #162
Similar here, I tried the Ainsworth one twice in the first couple of weeks, maybe I should give them another chance.
The Ainsworth Arms and the Toby in Ainsworth are the same place! It used to be called the Ainsworth arms, and closed down in the Autumn, reopening a month or so later as the Toby. But yes when it was the Ainsworth Arms it was a great pub and nice carvery.

The Ainsworth Arms (ex Three Arrows) is at the top of Ainsworth Road in Radcliffe.
The Toby carvery website calls it the Toby Carvery - Ainsworth
http://www.tobycarvery.co.uk/restaurants/north-west/ainsworthmanchester

The pub itself is on the border of Radcliffe and and Ainsworth and as all you locals know...some people would much prefer to tell their friends that they live in Ainsworth and not Radcliffe.
Personally i like where I live...and thats in Radcliffe.

The other Toby that we are talking about is actually in Greenmount...which is just outside Tottington.
Again, locals know where you mean when you mention the, The Toby at Tottington. You actually mean the Toby at Greenmount
http://www.tobycarvery.co.uk/restaurants/north-west/greenmountbury

The other carvery that has been mentioned somewhere on this thread is on Grane Road, and that one is just outside Haslingden
http://www.crowncarveries.co.uk/nationalsearch/northwest/thedukeofwellingtoninnhaslingden
That one is a Crown Carvery (which the Ainsworth Arms has just been converted from)

It's a cold for me as that's 20% off only, hardly a deal especially that you may not have a time to use it as use by date very soon.

Normally carvery costs 5.99GBP a person, well, maybe in some locations more, but the one next to me in Heaton Chapel Stockport costs just that.

If you're going to post sarkey comments it's a good idea to check your accuracy first. The Toby Carvery site is quite clear about providing a vegetarian option.
soldierboy001

Just checked the Toby Carvery web site no mention of veggie option at all, either in T&C's or menus, only other mention is that prices and menus may vary, which answers the price points other posters have mentioned.

Never tried a Toby carvery, although we do have one in the town. The one we use from time to time is owned by Marstons and is quite decent. Monday to Saturday, it's priced £3.49 £4.49 and £5.49, depending on plate size. The Toby is £5.99. I know carveries are a bit naff but sometimes after a hard days work, neither of us can be bothered to cook.
