Heard previously that the upscale to blu ray is pretty poor and you're actually better off just sticking with dvd.

It's not an upscale it's true HD the problem is they cropped it from 4:3 to widescreen which is why it gets such a bad rep but the actual picture quality is very good.
The US release is OAR but it has been mastered badly and is Region A locked, best release out there at a sensible price is the German set which is OAR, fantastic quality and Region B.
