"Sony Xperia Z2 can survive life's knocks" - lol, nope. I'm one of the most careful owners you could find but the Xperia Z1 Compact and Xperia Z3 Compact have both cracked on me with minimal damage and I know two people who own this Xperia Z2 who have both had cracked backs and one break on the front - they are equally careful, and have owned a range of other handsets for years with no issues.

The Xperia line are fantastic handsets tech wise and the battery life on them are usually beasts but the whole build quality is very, very flawed. I love Sony products typically but I wouldn't recommend it from personal experience - cracked everything, and I owned both a case and a tempered glass cover.

Was on contract with my Xperia Z3 Compact until it broke and didn't fancy paying the excess on insurance nor turning it around AGAIN to Sony so bought a Moto G 3rd Gen 2GB to tide me over till my contract renewed. Got it on the Black Friday Amazon FR deal @ £130 and haven't looked back. If you're after a phone, get that one, I see it's on Sale again for around £139 from Amazon IT. Great sturdy build and can handle pretty much everything I throw at it. The Camera isn't as good as this Xperia Z2, the screen technically less clear and on paper the tech specs pale, but it's no slouch and I'll take sturdiness every day of the week.

I've owned a Z2 for 2 years and recently upgraded to Z5 Premium. I'm a careful user but the Z2 had its fair share of drops and bangs etc. Never once cracked. My friend and his brother both own the Z3 and they are reckless with theirs and they have no screen protector or cases - no cracks at all. So experiences being what they are - I can easily say I disagree with your post. Sony Xperia range of phones have my vote all day and this deal is excellent.

Yeah, it originally showed as out of stock at my three nearest stores and then suddenly showed as "in stock for immediate collection" in my nearest store when I checked again late last night. I can only assume that it was previously reserved and not collected and then put back in stock. Could be worth it for people to double check other stores as people may not have made it in for their reservations

Looking to get a new phone and many people are mentioning the G4 from vodafone instead. I found another deal on here with a million pages on the G4 cant be unlocked, vodaphone are useless, I sent it back!

So to get up to speed, getting the G4 instead of this will be locked to vodaphone, but this phone is simfree and cheaper, surely this is a better deal, if you are not with vodaphone.

26 Dec 15 #107
Unless your budgeting to the last pound or have a strong preference for sony brand / waterproof dust proof phone, there is no logical reason to choose this over the G4....Removable battery and upto 2tb of additional sd card storage along with the overall superior spec og the G4 makes it a no brainer, this is gen or 2 behind whereas the G4 and S6 are right up there and current. The 20mp camera although good and superb at release is no brtter than tbe 16mp camera of the LG.

If you got the extra cash i would look elsewhere with some very good deals about at the mo

It was the Xperia Z. I took my then-new Xperia Z into the sea in Jamaica visiting wife's relatives, a few years ago. This is deffo not the best deal around now and the z2 is not better than an lg g3. I had both and sold the z2 on. The screen and camera are better on the g3 and even the front facing speakers on the z2 didn't sound great. When you can get both an s6 or a g4 for fifty quid more why would you want this?
David23 to jespurrier
25 Dec 15 #69
I agree, The Z2 is a nice but compared to the G3 which is roughly from the same era the G3 is a better deal because they can be picked up around this price and it has a 5.5" 2K screen. I really couldn't bring myself to buy a phone with a screen smaller than I have now, looking at 6 inchers these days!

The z2 camera just doesn't perform as it should looking at the specs on paper. I had one. I took identical pictures with it and the g3. The g3 pictures were sharper more of the time due to the laser auto focus and had better colour reproduction. Believe me I was hyped for the z2, I even went to a launch event for it lol. But the g3 is better.

26 Dec 15 #86
Agreed. I'm on a Z2 (2 months) at the mo, but Santa has just brought me a G4 & I'll be glad to go back to LG. The camera in low light on the Z2 is shockingly poor. I had to get my wife to take a photo the other night on her iphone & send it to me. Bit embarrassing as I'm always telling her how superior android phones are. Ended up with the Z2 in Feb after last years Vodafone G2 shambles when I bought a couple for the kids. Already ran a G2, then a G3 but went back to the G2 as I couldn't cope with the G3 battery life. Had played about with this, but still preferred the G2. Smashed my G2 so pulled this out the cupboard. It's a good phone for £199, but if you can find a Vodafone store with stock of the G4 at £225, I would go for that.
One thing I would say in the Z2's defence is that if you look at the current crop of flagship phones, they are not much of an upgrade to the Z2.

I do respect that it can be subjective though but in any case I still think anybody buying a phone around this price point should really spend a little bit more and get the o2 refresh s6 or quote the g4 price at ebuyer to flubit and get it for £255 unlocked without the hassle of the recent Vodafone deal. ;-) Both those phones are iphone 6s beaters in my opinion and are still cutting edge unlike the z2 which is now two generations behind.
soza to jespurrier
25 Dec 15 #83
Keep in mind that neither the g4 or the s6 have decent custom ROM support. Sony on the other hand contribute to AOSP and push sources to github, which makes the Sony devices desirable to developers like myself or anyone who just wants to remain on the latest version of Android. Sony are normally quick to release official updates too, which can't be said for many of the other manufacturers.

I'm hoping that Sony gets a chance to put out the next Nexus phone.

It's not abusing the Refresh system as that is how it's supposed to work! If it was an actual loophole they'd have closed it ages ago.

I've had this for about a year now and it did have to go back at one point because of a common (hopefully not anymore) issue with a failing microphone.

This is now resolved, but be warned the company you have to RMA to if it goes wrong (SBE Ltd, contractors for sony) are *AWFUL* and absolutely clueless.

The phone itself is pretty good if you have no problems. One thing I would say is the flaps that cover the charging port are fiddly. Get one of these for the magnetic charging port instead: http://www.handtec.co.uk/sony-z3-z2-z1-magnetic-charging-cable-black-dcu28.html?gclid=CMXH78WI98kCFQcYwwodx70CkQ

I dont think you can compare 02 Refresh deals to phone only deals, as we're basically abusing the system, and technically isnt the actual price for the phone.

Its a one off. Hopefully this is the new base Price for this phone.

Did u get the fully boxed etc.? Mine came only in plain white box and just with a USB cable

Sure it was this price in Argos this time last year when I got mine, I've had no issues at all and build quality is fine, mine is chucked about all the time and always in my pocket with no cracking issues. Best advice I can give is find the magnetic charger for it.

Was £299 last Xmas / January (after reduction)
Think it was down to £229 ish a month ago or so, but never seen it under £200 new before.
PS, I got a Z3 Compact grade B from Smartfonestore for £150 last month, impressed with it for the money.

Would of gone for this but after seeing the screen on my mates z2 no chance, not sure if anyone else experienced the screen at one side as around an inch from the edge of colour run, i mean the red, green, blue type blur. Also when i call him he sounds like he is the other side of the world. He has vodafone on vodafone network. Glad now i went for the g4.....

I got one in Argos last year, great phone, and I had the noise cancelling headphones in the box (at the time it seemed a bit 50/50 if you did, you can ask to have a look before buying) and they are really good in my opinion.
An excellent phone,
Pros... the forward facing speakers, rather good battery life especially with stamina mode); noise cancelling built in (with correct Headphones), waterproofness, rather nice camera, useful Sony apps, compatible with PS4. Very good FM Radio, which hardly uses any battery.

Cons...
Is a little bit bulky and heavy (I do prefer the S5 as my daily device, because of this, just easier to carry in shirt pocket); flaps (not a big issue, and the magnetic charger cables work very well instead); I find the screen a bit 'dark' at times when watching video;

Otherwise, for brand new, and IF you get the NC headphones in the box, then its a great deal.

I suppose. Just dont say that this isnt a good deal please.

Its the same price you paid without using any one off codes or abusing any system.
Solid deal imo.

My O2 refresh deal became my phone a day after it arrived.

Abusing the system! I feel so bad about it. Poor old Telifonica. They are a business. If they can't promote a deal without a loophole we can 'abuse' tough!

I am sure this can go on and on, but I would agree on the build quality issues

1) Sony Z1 - Despite being extremely careful with devices and all my things looking A1 after years of use, this bent at the USB connector. Very common
2) Sony Z3 Tablet - Perfect
3) Sony Z3 Compact - Headphone has stopped working, the microphone introduces lots of gremlins when on loudspeaker and the compass needs resetting every 2 days

Cracking phones but they need to improve the basic build quality/design of their devices and customer service effectiveness needs to ramp up as well.

If Amazon are still doing the 30% off warehouse you can get a used Z3 for this, mine arrived with no signs of use.

I have this. Brilliant for the money. No overheating issues. Almost stock Android. A great all rounder. Price wise this was £220 3 months ago. Easily the best phone I've had. Heat.

Decent phone for the price had it since release, when my contact ends I'm probably just going to get a sim deal and keep the phone.

Good deal! and as a proud owner of Z2 the Only issue is the call volume on speaker is very low..only uses one of the two stereo speakers for calls..

Great phone for the money. Still very relevant as a flagship material.
Love Sony's light touch on skinning Android. Frequent updates and good battery optimisation are other bonuses compared to say Samsung.
Availability of cases is not so great. And it's not a sturdy phone so you will need one.

Z2 owner since release and not a single issue never had it fail on me and still get 2 full days on a single charge at 18+months old can not fault the phone! one thing to say is if you treat a phone like sh*t its going to end up like sh*t

Just ordered mine, collect in store tomorrow.
Was going to buy the LG G3 when that came down to the same price at Argos 6 weeks or so ago.
Was persuaded to wait though in case this or Moto X Play was reduced on Black Friday.
Moto was but missed it ~ glad I did now!!!
