The KD55X8005C is quite simply, a great 4K Smart TV. Powered by the 4K Processor X1 chip, content is upscaled to its best 4K resolution which brings a stunning quality to all the available entertainment. Android brings all the personalization, intelligence and entertainment of your Smartphone on to the 55-inch screen. YouView is on hand to provide a seven day scroll back TV guide.

Cheapest I can see for this size via Pricespy...
Enter ANDROID100 for £100 off the normal price of £899

Currys should price match AO

Some question over the Android system but latest updates seem to be an improvement.

Try this > update to latest software, reset (clear data and restore) and try to setup as new. mine solved most of the problems by doing this except TV dont turn off if i hold power button in the remote hold for 5 sec, do you also have this issue ?

The internet connection was very good indeed, surprisingly amazing since even a 4k you tube video would play without buffering. The setup was standard, there were no apps running in the background other than stock. The TV had been un-boxed that day since I was waiting for them to demo it and got a call to say it had been setup.

The TV had been un-boxed that day since I was waiting for them to demo it and got a call to say it had been setup. I did check for any strange apps, but the only apps that can be used in any case are the ones on the app market for android TV, not all the apps you will see on your Android phone when connecting to the app market. In that sense its very restricted. Unless you side load or root the TV and mess about, your limited in terms of apps at the moment too.

Do you think it could've been anything to do with setup or slow Internet connection? I've owned a 50" and 55" and both have been great. I also had several demos before deciding and they were all fine.

So it goes from bad to worse. This is a sad state of affairs, largely because its not exactly like Google need to collaborate with multiple parties just yet to get things right. Only Sony. This is simply atrocious and most likely down to no testing by Sony. Hopefully a much better manufacture can develop a google TV that works. Samsung ? Could VIZIO enter the UK market with a google TV ?

I did, and I was surprised. It was very laggy and slow, with overlays that hesitate with choppy animation and in some instances, it simply freezes and requires a restart. I was very shocked and disheartened. I checked for updates thinking the 55" shop model was somehow out of date, it noted the latest updates were installed on the WiFi link. This was a John Lewis store, the new one in Birmingham. The store assistant could do nothing but apologise and suggest they need more time to fix things. But I noted, if its under powered, then only a hardware refresh can address that. The UI performance was quite terrible overall. Shame. But if your happy with what it provides then good for you. I think I will wait, until they sort out the long list of reported issues and as you say, I can experience smooth responsive performance during a demo.

I'm sorry you can't record USB HDD. Personally it's not a feature I'm likely to use. If you bought a TV expecting this I'm sure you could take it back and get something else? All the other features of the sony TVs persuaded me to get one and I'm very happy with mine. Android runs seamlessly.

Oh look, Sony have today delayed the release of USB HDD recording by a further 3 months from 'before 24th December 2015' to 'before 31st March 2016' on these TVs. Marvellous.

This year so far estimated global sales of lcd TVs is 235 million. Last year Sony had 6% of this. I'll let you make an educated guess for 2015 sales. I'm sorry I can't help you any more.
paulj48
8 Dec 15 #55
well according to your second link Sony's worldwide share of LCD last year was only 6.5%, the first link isn't much use as you need to be a member of the site to see it.

Pretty much pointless evidence as its not this years data (i.e. when the Android TV's were sold) and only a percentage of a number that you don't even know.

My mistake mines an KD55S8005CBU not a KD55X8005CBU. Although i'm not sure if I should be relieved or not. So haven't been ripped on the price but the TV should still be showing some of the faults that have been reported.... or perhaps I've got one build midweek that's decent

Has Sony really sold several million of these Android TV's since their release this year? where are you getting this figure from?
Jaybeam
8 Dec 15 #50
Unfortunately I'm one who did have the problems with android on a 55x 8509 and had to send it back. It was with the latest update (youview) from what I understand - did improve but not enough for me. I have gone back to a old Sony with a minix android box which Works a dream. I'm not looking at any tv's now till the 2016 models appear hope things will improve.
j_o_h_n
8 Dec 15 #49

The evidence? Sure, they had their problems early on but most of the issues were resolved through updates. I used to have a separate android box and my tv outperforms it completely. Don't take the forums as an overall view of the standard of the product. Several million have been sold to very happy customers. Go and have a demo. You may be surprised.
TwoCakes
8 Dec 15 #48
Not Many at all, the evidence speaks for itself. The TVs are flawed, both in hardware and development resources and expertise. Sony don't really give a dam. Look elsewhere!

Hi all just to let you know of my experience with this tv, which I picked up from Marks Electrical for £749 a week ago. I was nervous after reading the reviews but really like android and use kodi on multiple devices.
I was upgrading from a 6 year old 50 inch Panasonic plasma.
Really impressed the the picture in all formats and the youview works perfectly. Yes the android system slows things a little but nothing I'm not happy with. I have had to reset the tv once after adding and using lots of apps but I guess this is like my phone - I just can't see a way of closing all apps just yet. Had to figure out how to get the sound back to the amp with ARC but its now working very well.
Only bug for me is a slight lip synch issue on the virgin box but I may just get rid of that as youview gives us what we need and the menu is better than virgin.
Overall I'm happy with purchase so if youre comfy with android I think it's a great machine.
j_o_h_n
7 Dec 15 #45
Yet they've sold several million of them. I've had two and never had an issue. Haven't tried recording to HDD, not sure I will. Everything else works perfectly.

I think it means if you find the product for example £100 cheaper they will match the price and give you 10% of that difference. In that example you'd get an extra £10 off.
SingingDwarf
7 Dec 15 2 #43
You'd like to think so, wouldn't you....however, these TVs were released back in May/June and have had multiple firmware updates since then. Six months down the road and they are still having problems. How many engineers do you think Sony have working on this and how many on the 2016 models? Bear in mind that CES is only four and a half weeks away !
webvamsi666

Got this TV from Lightning deal as few people mentioned i have issues as well, I raised with amazon, they send new one, still had issues, I spoke to them and there is a long long thread about problems >https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/televisions/2015-bravia-android-tv-issues/td-p/1949079/page/315 this thread related to all models..

I also posted my issues in the thread. mainly if you connect Fully loaded HDD with different formats of videos TV suffers and will reboot. This will definitely not fit my purpose.

Also light dark shade in corners, not very big thing., but others complained about lip sync and youview issues which i didn't test so far..

My post: https://community.sony.co.uk/t5/televisions/2015-bravia-android-tv-issues/td-p/1949079/page/312

People are assuming there is a major update on 24th, dont know if this was true and it might fix.

I really like the TV but these issues putting off :disappointed:

7 Dec 15 #38
The software issue will be a temporary problem, highly unlikely Google/Sony don't continue to address as a top priority and fix in the next few months - even so, at £799 (with discount) the price is too high for the overall tv you are getting.
SingingDwarf
7 Dec 15 1 #37
Not just the 4K models. Lots of outstanding issues present - like not being able to record to HDD and the HDMI input lip sync problems to name but two.
SingingDwarf
7 Dec 15 2 #36
Having had one of the 2015 Sony Bravia sets, the Android WILL be of concern - this causes the TV to reboot, the entire system locks up, remote control becomes unresponsive, there are lip sync problems when using HDMI inputs, etc., etc.

Check out the rather looooong thread on the Sony forums about these Android sets....and then think again.
nick1098
7 Dec 15 #35
I have had this TV for about 2 weeks after getting it for £599 on an Amazon lightening deal - it's being used in a spare room and happy for what use it serves.

But, with that said, I wouldn't pay anywhere near £899 for it!

If you plan on using this as your main TV and you have high standards, you will be disappointed. Comparing this sony to the Panasonic VT65 (plasma) in my main room, the quality difference is significant especially on SD and HD content which I imagine will make up 90% of all your viewing.

The Sony is a good TV, but the price point of £800 - £900 would make me consider alternatives. At the very least, *we know* these TVs can and do sell for a lot less than is currently being asked for so there should be no rush to pounce on it at this price.

My advice is to hold off, as we get closer to Christmas more bargains will surface - for what its worth the only picture I have seen to be better than the Panasonic VT is the LG Oled.

Seems like a bargain. I paid £925 on this from Amazon on Black Friday. I've not had any of the lock up issues people are seeing but to be fair this is just a screen for me, not played with the smart stuff too much (aside from gawking at 4k stuff on youtube). Might return it and re-buy...

You summary of the TV is spot on, and Sony Android TV's in general. Hardware excellent, but Android software needs attention. I use a Humax box so have little to do with the TV software, so generally its stable. Have had trouble putting into standby as it kept restarting (OS crashed). I have until Jan 31st to return. I am leaning towards keeping and hoping Sony and Google sort the software. Its a gamble as they may abandon 2015 TV's and improve only 2016 ones....
paulj48 to flashyphotos

The satellite inputs are not meant for the UK market (although they did work) and there's a new firmware due supposedly in the next few weeks to activate the USB recording, this may iron out some other issues.

Has there been any android updates since the youview. I had the x8509 55" since the update but sent it back. Still haven't decided as the Samsung seem to have problems with screen bleed - put me off. I was wondering if they will address os problems on 2016 models.

Good article here, bit techy!

http://www.unlockpwd.com/what-are-400hz-800hz-or-1000hz-in-the-tv-and-what-they-are-driving-hdblog-it/

At the bottom is a nice summary of the Sony Motionflow rates, it seems to use a combo of the panels native refresh rate (100hz for Motionflow XR200, 200hz for Motionflow XR400 and XR800) along with a regional backlighting effect.

I will follow this thread and question eagerly as well  I'm one of the lucky one who got this from the amazon lightning deal for £599. Still sitting in the box while waiting for the right tv panel to arrive.

For me the built in Android OS is not so much of a concern as I will be using my existing Fire TV box anyway.
