Right. So you're using a very heavy "modern" web browser (http://lifehacker.com/why-chrome-uses-so-much-freaking-ram-1702537477) that's designed for desktop use, and are trying to use it as a benchmark for a device that's a tablet.
Let's take this slowly:
*This is a tablet.
*It has the ability to drop into desktop mode and run normal desktop apps. This doesn't mean it's a good idea.
*Chrome is designed for the desktop, and has RAM usage to suit this environment.
*Chrome does not have a release that is suitable for the tablet mode in Windows 10 (it's not even on the store). Google have not released one. This is exactly the same as Chrome on Android being a different build to Chrome on the desktop. Would you also complain about the desktop version of Chrome not working on a 1GB Android device?
*There are other browsers that are designed to work in a lower RAM environment. Microsoft Edge is one, but there are others.
You can keep waiting for screenshots. It's not like you can't Google for reviews of these 1GB tablets, almost any variant will do....they will all tell you how suitable they are for browsing, Skype, Youtube and the like, but not a lot more.
Seriously, there is so much you could complain about with a Windows 10 tablet: The need for anti-virus due to it being a true PC, a really lacking apps store, or that occasionally a Windows update will get in the way of you using it....but you insist on picking a non-issue that multiple people in this thread are telling you works fine.
All on a £30 device. Madness.

You use Chrome as a benchmark? soon as I read that your comment is null and void. Then you go on about memory with pages open, and word and excel and music streaming... if you got all that open then its not the tablet that's the issue, its the user using a device for something its not designed for. And you comment about grass on other side... I bet your turf costs more than £29. Suggest you jog on before your comments look even more silly.

564 in stock!! That's a lot of returns, does that say something about the product?
Got mine, and I am please. The office license says it is expired - is that different from being used? Any idea whether the 10 pounds of blinkbox credit still apply?
Otherwise it is a decent tablet. Upgrade to Windows 10 worked fine, and it looks like new. It is not quite the same as the Linx 7 - the case is certainly a bit different.
And there are 5 contacts for a docking cradle or a maintenance adapter - any idea what they could be good for? It might be a USB port, or something more complicated.

Yuck. Sorry to hear that. Trojan Electronics hasn't changed much then, a PS3 I bought from Tesco's eBay outlet a few years ago was also stinking. Seems Trojan still doesn't care about how clean their refurbs are.

Mine hasn't arrived yet, but I've read of a few people with various windows tablets losing drivers during the windows 10 upgrade and others with exactly the same tablets going through fine. Seems rather hit and miss.
paulandpam1 to tek-monkey
4 Dec 151#175
The problem with losing drivers happens when you choose a clean fresh install of windows 10.
To save your existing drivers you must choose the upgrade option.
But if you know what your doing and have a usb mouse and keyboard to connect after installation a full clean install is always best but obviously more involved.

When I switched on the tablet, after initial setup, took around 10 mins. It asked me to update to Windows 10. I said yes and it took around 30-40 mins. On Windows 10 it was very laggy and camera did not work. So I downgraded back to Windows 8 and it worked superb.
Then I done Windows update and updated around 30 security updates (400mb) and then I upgraded to Windows 10 and this time it worked perfectly. Smooth and camera working too. Thought I'd share my experience.

Could I appeal to any gurus out there. I upgraded this tablet from 8.1 to 10 a while ago and freezing is a real problem, usually with 10 mins of youtube or netflix. Did anyone else come across this and fix it?

Freezing with regards to what exactly?
Buffering issues, general tablet performance, lag?

3 Dec 15#170
I upgraded to Windows 10 took over 40 mins. Outcome was a slow, laggy device, with camera not working.
If you have done this and you want to go back to Windows 8 (which was much faster and everything worked)
Downgrade Windows 10 to Windows 8.
- Swipe screen right, black bar appears
- Tap on All settings,
- Tap on Update & Security/Recovery
- Tap on Recovery
- Tap on Go back to Windows 8
Follow the instructions and let it complete the downgrade.
I would leave it on charge during the whole process.

Which I'm assuming isn't an atom based system with 1gb of ram and a 32gb eMMC?
My drives write speed will drop to about 60% if it goes a few weeks without a TRIM operation. I don't tend to notice it because those speeds are still high and with the amount of ram I have and the way Windows intelligently uses it I'm only going to notice if I run a benchmark or start doing large amounts of file transfers. Day to day running isn't affected.
But a system like this short on ram, with an eMMC which is already slower than a desktop SSD you're going to feel the effect in it's responsiveness. It's write operations which are slowed, which is something that will impact even opening apps as Windows makes space in memory by writing it to the swapfile.
I'm glad your system runs tip top and all, but I'm doubting your system is comparable. And there is plenty of anecdotal reports over the web of performance suffering as users allow their system NAND to become full be it Windows or Android and there is measurable evidence of it's affects.

I was relating it to my £55, branded (Acer) tablet which is now £75 again. It's a waste of £30 as far as I'm concerned; I know all too well why I paid 5 times more than this tablet under scrutiny costs for my Galaxy Tab but from experience of a Windows tablet with similar specs I'd not recommend it due to the frustration it'll cause the owner

1 Dec 15#128
If I'm completely honest I haven't touched it for three weeks, I mainly use an Android tablet. Not because of the lack of performance etc, but because of the app availability and apps that are designed relative to screen size.
I haven't bothered updating to Windows 10 yet.
But one thing I can say is the startup time on this tablet is amazingly good. It boots up in under 12 seconds for me. It amazes me how such a small thing with a low end processor and limited RAM can boot up significantly faster than my Lenovo laptop with a Core i5 processor and 8GB of RAM. I do suppose this has a lot to do with the fact the Connect tablet has flash storage whereas my Lenovo has a slower mechanical hard drive
Well it's actually a bit of a lottery. That totally depends on if the previous owner had activated it before returning it.

I have this and it's great.
A lot of those returns will be from people who were expecting an Android-like experience with hundreds of thousands of apps to download at their pleasure.
This tablet is not that at all, it's essentially a full Windows PC condensed into a tablet and runs full Windows applications, including legacy apps.
So no, most of these returns aren't because the device is rubbish, they're because the tablet didn't do what they expected it to do.
I bought one several months ago for £79 and even then I thought it was excellent value for money. It's a real PC in tablet form! Connect it up to a monitor and you could use it as a main PC if your needs aren't too demanding.

Once upon a time there was Window it ran on mb's of ram (shock)! Then there was vista which ran on gb's of ram, people were angry at Windows, they knew they had been bad but the damage was done :disappointed:
Then Windows made 10 to show that they knew how to manage hardware beers and made the OS to run on low spec machines to make the OS have more user uptake. People don't believe it and still moan about Win10 needing more RAM!
It works on 1gb you won't be editing movies or playing awesome games but it works.

It's an Intel Atom powered machine there is no reason Kodi wouldn't be compatible.
I like most people balk at the idea of running a system with only 1gb of ram. Even Android lags on that these days. But it's more usable than you would think, Windows 8 stripped Windows down a lot for memory usage over 7. And 10 is even better. With solid state storage you can get by with it. Honestly I'd take 1gb ram and solid state storage over 2gb ram and a mechanical hard drive.
There is a video of a guy demonstrating Windows 8.1 on a 1gb ram tablet and it doesn't look a total disaster.
But I'd definitely get an SD card for it as once the main storage drive begins to fill up it will slow down.

My experience with the identical Linx 7 was that 1GB was fine with Windows 8.1. Don't expect it to be smooth with 10 chrome tabs open or good performance with gaming. Windows 10 should only make it better if Tesco provide the drivers etc.
However the 7" screen means using the full Windows desktop is only for those with a degree of perseverance.

1GB is perfectly fine if you understand the limitations of a £30 tablet running full Windows and don't ask too much of it. Don't think I've ever actually run the Linx 7 out of RAM or felt it was too slow.

30 Nov 15#79
If it ground to a halt, something was seriously wrong. As others have said, this isn't an i7 with 32GB of RAM, but you should have absolutely no issues playing a video in a browser. MS have the minimum tablet spec for Windows 10 there for a reason
If you buy it and don't like it, it's not like you couldn't sell it on with a minimal loss?
Absolutely. But a 7" 1GB tablet isn't really designed to be used on the desktop at all
Not a lot - refurb can be anything from a damaged box, broken charger, old stock, opened stock....it doesn't mean it's ever been faulty.

It's got the basics on there, but not a lot more. Many of the apps are poor quality compared to the Android / iOS versions currently.
Having said that, the top apps integrate so well I actually prefer Windows 10 as a tablet over Android (and I really like Android!). The swipes, the speed, the consistency of the interface is all top notch. Heck, even my right honourable iOS friends at work gave credit where is due.
The issue is that there is only a handful currently.

Wrong again on so many levels.
Edge is the default/browser of choice with a Windows 10 installation not IE. And now you go from multitasking, with Word, Excel, music streaming and multiple tabs in a browser to a few tabs, one with music and word. This would easily be handled with 1GB of ram using Edge with steaming and Word 2016. Chrome isn't a modern browser, its a browser based upon Chromium open source with added insecurity and privacy issues, anyone in the know, knows this, please keep up with the 21st century and at least base your comments on fact.
Just read the posts, there's loads saying 1GB is fine, and only one that disagrees.

Madness.

I'm sorry for using a modern web browser as a real world benchmark. The most popular web browser in the world.
Some of us use something other than the amazingly incredible Internet Explorer.
You're complaining about me wanting this tab to be able to do a mild bit of multitasking? Having a few tabs open with one streaming music and perhaps a word document open at the same time is far from unreasonable in this day and age. If it can't manage that then it's no good.

1GB RAM on a Windows machine now a days is like running the appalling 1366x768 screen resolution. Sure you'll get many people saying it's fine and perfectly usable but to anyone who's felt the grass on the other side knows how terrible it really is.

I just installed office 2007. That's what my PC runs and had no issues.
*Trojan Electronics is a Swansea based company which processes and resells Tesco's returned electronics equipment. They also operate the Tesco eBay store on their behalf.
To save your existing drivers you must choose the upgrade option.
But if you know what your doing and have a usb mouse and keyboard to connect after installation a full clean install is always best but obviously more involved.
Then I done Windows update and updated around 30 security updates (400mb) and then I upgraded to Windows 10 and this time it worked perfectly. Smooth and camera working too. Thought I'd share my experience.
Buffering issues, general tablet performance, lag?
If you have done this and you want to go back to Windows 8 (which was much faster and everything worked)
Downgrade Windows 10 to Windows 8.
- Swipe screen right, black bar appears
- Tap on All settings,
- Tap on Update & Security/Recovery
- Tap on Recovery
- Tap on Go back to Windows 8
Follow the instructions and let it complete the downgrade.
I would leave it on charge during the whole process.
this or the amazon fire 7 that was recently £35!
Its a good tablet but unfortunately there is always a reason for these dramatic price flurries.
The Linx7 tablet new is now £39.

Will this do or is a better cheap alternative android out there ?
Put the Price, next time you sharing a deal Here !
I feel compelled to reply.
Source: I own one
Here's a link to the product page on Tesco Direct. Pretty good reviews if you ask me:
http://www.tesco.com/direct/connect-7-tablet-with-windows-81-office-365-personal-32gb-wifi-black/182-3108.prd
However add the £1 case and £3.10 comes off making it still £30 with a case which is still not too bad
Thank you in advance
Also, for people saying 1GB isn't enough, what are you planning to do on a tablet? I can play Hearthstone on low settings at native resolution and it's smooth as butter. I love having a small Windows machine on a tablet, browsing and gaming is fine for me.
Thank you in advance
Thank you in advance
Personally I would defo buy the Linx because its new and you get the year office subscription.
BTW 1GB RAM works surprisingly well - especially with a Win 10 upgrade.
Only £27 with the £1 hudl case and 10%, £3 discount too.
That's based on real life experience, as opposed to some academic explanation.
Then Windows made 10 to show that they knew how to manage hardware beers and made the OS to run on low spec machines to make the OS have more user uptake. People don't believe it and still moan about Win10 needing more RAM!
It works on 1gb you won't be editing movies or playing awesome games but it works.
P.S there was a company called Google that has followed the same path as Microsoft but no-one has moaned about the hardware requirements.... Yet
There is a video of a guy demonstrating Windows 8.1 on a 1gb ram tablet and it doesn't look a total disaster.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=E8zEcx4wbuE
But I'd definitely get an SD card for it as once the main storage drive begins to fill up it will slow down.
Get a £1 case for hudl and you'll get £3 off
However the 7" screen means using the full Windows desktop is only for those with a degree of perseverance.
But it's so hard!!
I had a Linx 7 & they discharge even if plugged in so not great as a Kodi or torrent box.
What does that say about product quality / usability ?
