Some of you might remember this, "Quake Live, arguably the most enduring free-to-play first-person shooter, is no longer free-to-play. An update published yesterday on the game's Steam page announced the arrival of Steamworks integration and the termination of the Quake Live subscription service. That means friend lists, chat, lobbies, voice chat, server browsers and statistics now all run through Steam."
So they decided to charge £6.99 but now you can get it for £1.39 in the Steam sale.

You could subscribe to a Pro version which gave you some benefits like multiple clans, starting your own server etc.
I suppose that model just didn't work but anyone who had a subscription got a free key for steam and they also announced to the free community to play it in Steam for free but I for example didn't listen and when the switch happened didn't get it for free.
Glad I waited as I don't mind paying £1.39

I found it much harder playing Q3 on Quakelive than playing vanilla multiplayer Q3 back in the day. Dunno if it's because you're better matched against other players or they've tweaked the kill zone areas but didn't find it as much fun.
Might give it another go for that price but I always enjoyed playing the excessive version or instagib.

Yeah agreed, played it for a bit of nostalgia year or so back - servers were full of spawn killers etc - usual folk that put me off playing the game.

I don't mean to offend but is it possible your reactions have slowed somewhat? I can't remember the last time I played anything as fast paced or requiring as much accuracy as Q3A. I'm going to give this a try but I'm definitely not going to be taking advantage of the high resolution graphics if possible. Trying to hit someone with a rail gun whilst bouncing around took a great amount of skill (if I do say so myself) in low res days, I can only be harder if the target appears smaller on screen due to high res graphics.

Yeah I must say I had a nice setup in quake live pre steam. I had all the texture detail turned down and the enemy was green making it easy to focus on the enemy.
In the steam version when I first played the other evening, there is so much detail in the maps and your opponent is now either red it blue. So a) seeing enemy's is really difficult and b) I can't get used to the fact that seeing another opponent is most probably an enemy. I have to keep reminding myself what team I am in and remember what colour to attack.
I'm sure there are settings though to tweak all of this but I haven't had a chance yet.

Nah, not reactions. I still play Q3 on the Elite'z servers from time to time and still maintain a decent standard until I dip into QuakeLive and get a reality check.
Can't quite put my finger on it but it seems sterile and not as engaging.
I've purchased it on Steam though, for that price it's a no-brainer
