The point is to keep costs down.
MS allowed Windows 8.1 (with bing) for free for devices with screens smaller than 10inches.
remove the screen and the manufacturer would have to pay for the Windows 8.1 license.
basically this device is cheaper with the screen than without

Of course, it's the most bizarre form-factor ever, but for £60 with both operating systems and 64GB of storage, you're getting a lot for your money.

Mine is still going strong today, I kept 8.1, and lucky enough mine came with the UK power lead as well.
Still using the Ebay fan from above, and also no problems, touch wood.

Have this and no problems at all. Easily updated to Windows 10. Mine came with a UK power lead/plug as well as the adaptor the thread suggests. I use mine for streaming Kodi. Took a while to arrive but had no problems at all.

Has anyone replaced the power adaptor for a 'proper' UK one and if so, any links? I'm thinking Maplin etc.
Have had few problems with mine, except that Gearbest didn't send the UK adapter I asked for, so I had to buy one. And they've ignored my ticket completely. Wouldn't use them again, seem well dodgy.

Ohh the X9... we grabbed the X8 because it has twice the memory (64GB) and cost a lot less (£51) from Gearbest EU.
Besides the bigger screen, are there any other differences?

Unfortunately an adapter is my only option as it came with a US plug fitted. I only have the one adapter to try (one I had already as Gearbest didn't send me one), and I'm unwilling to pay £10 for the UK power unit someone mentioned early in the thread as that would possibly be throwing good money after bad. :disappointed:

While I agree that for the price it is a good deal even with it's flaws, I think it is also fair to say quality of the item is not great:
- Heat issues as there is no heatsink
- USB ports not powerful to support some USB appliances
- Ethernet is using USB (like an internal usb to ethernet adapter)
- Changing bios settings will brick it
- bios can't be reset as there is no battery, you need to de solder a chip, source a new one, program it and solder it to reset bios
I'm not saying don't buy it, just that it is a risky buy.
On the face of it I would give a bit more to get a better quality item (from a brand name for example) with same features (several USB ports, ethernet, bluetooth, touchscreen, dual boot etc).
My aim was to put it next to my tv and use it as a clock +squeezeplayer on android then steam in home streaming/kodi on windows.

Not sure why some people are having issues with this awesome device.
Are you guys plugging it in via a 2 to 3 pin adaptor.
Sometimes, those adaptors can be the cause of electrical problems.

I raised a PayPal dispute after they didn't respond for 3 days to my ticket, then they answered straight away saying they need help from the supplier, looks like they are just delaying things... Personally I wouldn't settle for their 'wallet points' they have to exchange or refund by law. Not sure about paying for postage, but that should just be to the oneworld office in Hayes, seeing as that's were they shipped it from.

It has been raised to a PayPal dispute in which they haven't responded to. They have until the 20th of Dec to respond to PayPal in which hope PayPal will claw the money back.

Unfortunately I've had problems with my Pipo X8 too.
- It wouldn't switch on to start with but after four or five attempts it did
- I booted into Windows and it crashed. It did this multiple times
- I booted into Android and every time the onscreen keyboard appeared there was a loud 'white noise' sound from the unit's speakers
- I left it a while, tried to turn it on and it won't. Have tried a couple times since and still no luck
It looks like I'll now have to do battle with Gearbest's returns - although it looks like I may have to pay the return postage. Maybe a PayPal dispute would be a better option?

Who are you checking for tracking? This confirms my worst suspicions with Gearbest because online reviews of them as a company suck, but this is no surprise when it comes to Chinese providers in my experience.
Be warned; your 'refund' I believe will come in the form of Gearbest store credit - that's how they dealt with me questioning why the price had dropped by a fiver since I placed my order with them. Also, should you are, Google some stories of peoples experience with them and you'll see that refunds are rarely, if ever given back in sterling. Did you pay by credit card?
On the 10th of December my parcel left Hong Kong airport, nothing since however ... I'll give it until Christmas to arrive, if nothing by then I'll raise a Paypal dispute.

Ordered on the 2nd from eu store. Still no arrival, had no responses to tickets for 4 days after the item just stated processing for 7 days. Raised to paypal, then had a immediate response to ticket stating not in stock. I have 3 choices, wait, refund or buy somethings else.
Requested a refund, then had a response later in that day stating it could be shipped after i close my request with paypal even tho earlier requesting a refund and telling me it wasn't in stock.
Next response later that day is that it has been shipped.
This was 4 days ago. Checked tracking again today and courier has stated it is still with the seller, it has been not been shipped out. Just the courier ticket raised.
First and last order through gearbest it seems.

Not really, it had out of box issue:
- there is a lot of light bleeding in one corner
- dirt under screen
And it now seems to be bricked, it crashed with a few error messages and it doesn't boot anymore...
It also had issues with ethernet not connecting after boot.
On paper it looks good, but maybe they cut too many corners in choice of components and quality checks.

I ordered last Wednesday (2nd) and my order is still processing. Opened a ticket and had a reply this morning to say the TV box is in their UK warehouse but they don't have any UK adapters which they are waiting to come in from their Shenzhen warehouse. They asked me if I wanted to send the box out and follow with the adapter or wait.
Hmm, I ordered the X9 which was on offer at £65, and with the threat of the offer running out on Thursday at 4pm - the following day it dropped to £59. Thanks Gearbest. My order is still processing but any shop that won't give you an actual refund and only offers credit (Sports Direct come to mind after a recent debarkle!) aren't cool with me.

Good. To cover all bases: in windows, long press on the task bar yellow folder, select manage, from the storage section select disk management. That should show all partition sizes. There's other ways of accessing same info, but the suggested route should do the job.

It must be partitioned as you say, big piece for Windows and smaller for Android.
AndyRoyd
3 Dec 15#116
Wouldn't worry too much yet. Windows and Android are allocated their own storage space / partition. From windows, you can check all the partitions' space from Disk Management, there may be a similar utility in Android to view details of all the partitions, not just the Android partition. Vague recollection of somewhere suggesting this might have upto to 14 partitions! Whatever, I suspect you have total 64GB as advertised.

As far as I am aware, it is illegal to supply electrical items into the UK without a properly fitted 3 pin plug, unless a converter is supplied, (there are exceptions for electric shavers though). A converter is not an adapter, a converter must need tools to remove it, so it must be either permanently fixed, or be held in position by screws so that it is not easily removed. With mobile phones, Gearbest could get around this by not supplying the charger if it is the standard USB 5v 1amp type, (which a lot of people will already have), and just supplying the USB cable, but the current/voltage required for this item (12v 2.4A) would probably mean that a separate charger must be used, and if so, Gearbest should be providing a proper converter for the charger or they are breaking European and UK law. European law states that European companies must comply with the laws of the other European countries they are supplying, so items from Gearbest Europe should be complying with this if they really are a European outlet.
AndyRoyd
2 Dec 15#100
Possibly a shuttered & fused electric shaver adapter. The shuttered variants are easy to spot when the shutter is coloured red. Mains current draw by the Pipo will be well under 1A which is a typical rating of a fused shaver adapter.

If the UK adapter is the same as supplied with my phone order from Gearbest, then just beware, it does not comply with UK regulations and is potentially very dangerous once the adapter is inserted into a socket, exposing live terminals which could be be easily touched by a small child holding a short metal object.

these games still look great on the built in screen as the small screen size hides imperfections with the low graphic settings but hook it up to a tv and the games will look xbox 1 level (not Xbox One but original Xbox)

Think it would be great if you ran a small shop and had your paypal card reader attached to it or something.
I really like the fact that it has a ton of ports that the tablets don't have. It's just a bit odd for home use is all.

This form factor is very interesting. It has full sized USB, ethernet and HDMI ports so potentially easier to make those connections compared to a bog standard tablet.
I'm really on the fence with this one. The form factor doesn't lend itself to mobile use of the screen, it's really meant to live under the TV connected via the cables. As someone has rightly commented, it would probably have been cheaper for Pipo to pay for the screen and avail of the free full Win 8.1 OS offer from Microsoft, than to supply it as a media box without the screen but having to pay for the OS. With the 64GB eMMC It's still a pretty capable computer if you want to use it as such.
Definitely a weird and wonderful device, maybe one of those which you realise you could not have done without after buying??
Definitely deserves some heat for the price.

Any digital audio outputs on this (aside from the HDMI)? I'd like to run Squeezeplay on something like this, and output into a DAC without having my TV on to use the HDMI.
Looks like it does have headphone outputs, but these can be badly-implemented on this type of gadget.

Been offered a mxq box running wookie and kodi for £35 from a guy at work, any advantages or disadvantages over using this? Basically every time I want to use kodi I have to turn laptop on, login, plug into tv etc etc, just want something I can leave by tv and turn on when I want something. cheers.

I have one.
One of the fastest emc drives inside, it miles faster than my Teclast X98 while it uses the same cpu, just because the drive is that much faster.
The screen is one of the IPS type, fine angles en colour.
I use it with kodi, still thinking of a project hanging it up on the wall and using the screen as an interface (should be possible with mediaportal)
Lan is just 100mbit, which is fine for streaming content.
I use windows btw and it upgraded fine to windows10.

Of course, it's the most bizarre form-factor ever, but for £60 with both operating systems and 64GB of storage, you're getting a lot for your money.

I can only imagine the form factor was chosen partially to ensure a degree of air flow on the underside of the device, as reports are the device gets very warm quickly when using Windows.

Look guys, you are getting a fully licenced Windows 8.1 PC with 2GB ram 64GB storage, 4 full USB ports, Ethernet port, Micro SD slot, Bluetooth, WiFi, full size HDMI and possibly Office 365 (one year) for less than £60 delivered (upgradable to Windows 10).... Oh and it's also a proper Android device with a screen.

This Pipo one has double the ram (64G) as that one as well.
Heat. I was looking at these a while back, think they were around £130 6 months back. I have a super cheap tronsmart MK808B tv box which needed an extra £10 usb antenna to actually work reliably and the wireless keyboard/mouse I bought for it sucks. This with its touchscreen would be pretty awesome for the money - 64GB & Win 10 is also nice - can buy a touch compatible stylus and use photoshop on my 55" tv using the touchscreen for input - nice.

I have just ordered this for myself, after reading a lot of reviews online, most agree it is a bargain for what you get.
In the last two weeks I have ordered two Doogee phones from Gearbest, one for the Wife and the X5 for me. The service was great, both delivered in 5 days from order and from their EU warehouse, I always pay the $2 insurance, and was delivered by Yodel, no problems.

Besides the bigger screen, are there any other differences?
Sorry to hear about the issues you guys have had - I'm hoping as I have the X9 that I won't suffer the issues you guys are with the X8.
Are you guys plugging it in via a 2 to 3 pin adaptor.
Sometimes, those adaptors can be the cause of electrical problems.
My tracking shows with yodel and another link on here. Yodel states still with seller.
Be warned; your 'refund' I believe will come in the form of Gearbest store credit - that's how they dealt with me questioning why the price had dropped by a fiver since I placed my order with them. Also, should you are, Google some stories of peoples experience with them and you'll see that refunds are rarely, if ever given back in sterling. Did you pay by credit card?
On the 10th of December my parcel left Hong Kong airport, nothing since however ... I'll give it until Christmas to arrive, if nothing by then I'll raise a Paypal dispute.

Had a similar issue with anther device when windows booted.
The crackling @ boot is from the tv speakers right?
I find switching the tv off and back on fixes the problem.
no its when im using the android OS. when its doing graphical stuff i get like a hissing from the internal speakers
it doesnt do it on the windows os
Edit: Actually, I take it all back, this was in my email! What was I supposed to think? Eh? Eh?:stuck_out_tongue:
In the UK, if it starts JD it is on the Yodel website after about 24 hours. This has all been mentioned before.
Don't Panic.
I think it will indeed come from China, their stock count doesn't look accurate at all, so they are probably waiting for re suply. I wish they would be more open\honest...

It must be partitioned as you say, big piece for Windows and smaller for Android.
My previous two orders/deliveries have been excellent.
If it's delivered with windows 10, I'll be disappointed because we'll lose out on the 365 office licence.
Works perfectly with Microsoft Office, YouTube, Skype (use a USB camera with mic)
Below is a link to a page that shows the adapter supplied to me by Gearbest, (it is the first one on that page), and the page explains some of the dangers of using this type of adapter.
Illegal UK adapters
If the UK adapter is the same as supplied with my phone order from Gearbest, then just beware, it does not comply with UK regulations and is potentially very dangerous once the adapter is inserted into a socket, exposing live terminals which could be easily touched by a small child holding a short metal object.

For anyone who forgot to ask for a UK adapter like me.
what about hooking it up to a monitor with only basic vga input?
yes you can run games but dont expect stunning visuals.
Skyrim gets 30fps on lowest settings @ 1024x768
Left 4 Dead 2 50-60fps on Medium settings @ 1024x768
these games still look great on the built in screen as the small screen size hides imperfections with the low graphic settings but hook it up to a tv and the games will look xbox 1 level (not Xbox One but original Xbox)
impressive for a £60-£100 device though
Reading £51.65 now???
P.S. Is it like for like 2G/64G ?
Companies supply whatever adaptor is cheaply available.
They're not really counterfeit, but simply mass produced adaptors made to serve a purpose without the kind of quality control found in the UK
What to do?!?
or a amazon fire tv £64.99
or a android mqx 8gb £40

Getting back to this device, it's a full blown computer and will run all Windows software and hardware.
Firestick can't do that.
you read you recipe on the screen and prepare your food, then flip the unit over to cook using the heat generate by the power of Windows!
The 8.9 inch one is pricey, but probably has better usability. Also read reports of someone trying (but failed) to put Linux on it after he borked a Windows 10 upgrade. I wonder why this isn't possible?
