Good deal. I paid £179 from Amazon for this about 7 months ago. The thermostat can be controlled from your phone or the nest website which makes it really easy to set up a schedule. It also has an auto-away function which detects if you home or not and adjusts accordingly. There is a 3rd gen version out now so presumably that's why the price has come down... The 3rd Gen can control heating of your water too as well as some minor aesthetic differences. Teamed up with the nest protects (the smoke and CO2 alarms/sensors) these are great products which work well together.

Not sure why you have two thermostats? I assume you have a valve or separate pipe work for your upstairs and downstairs rads?

You would need two separate nest devices to replace two thermostats.

I just spoke to Nest on the phone earlier and they said that 1 thermostat can only work with one heat link connected to the boiler, so if you wanted 1 stat upstairs to take precedence over temperature regulation at night and another downstairs for the day, this isn't possible. You'd have to buy the stand and take it with you

24 Dec 15 #15
How do I know if I have the right wires behind the old thermostat, so that the new 3rd gen can control my hot water? I'm trying to decide if the extra £65 is worth it for the 3rd gen above this one.

Also, I have a boiler that control the hear ting and water, with one of those 24 hour dials with pins, and it also has a little slider with 3 settings: 'O' is always off, in the middle is based on the line positions, and 'I' is always on, I take it I could leave it in the I position all the time, cos this thing would control the heating? It also has 2 dials behind the flap- 1 for water and one for radiators that I can turn up to max, but I'm not really sure how to set it up. It's all pretty confusing (just moved in to my first house).

Any advice from existing users would be awesome, ta

24 Dec 15 1 #21
This is a wireless thermostat. It works by placing the thermostat/control part in the house (normally where you have your current thermostat) and then you have a receiver wired into your boiler.
The system is then linked to your wi-fi or home network so you can then control your heating using the app on your phone or the Internet.
It depends on your current system as to how involved this would be too install.

HAHA!! ... good one! .......oh, you were being serious........hmmmm..... :man: ...... now you've got me feeling all guilty, I know it's more convenient me being on this site looking for deals quickly (while i'm home or on the move) but now maybe i'll just go back to walking shop to shop look for deals instead (just like olden times).
zomg to PLANKT0N0
24 Dec 15 1 #53
They exist so you can control your heating remotely. For example: if you have to stay late at work, there's no point having your heating come on at the usual time just to heat a house that may be empty for a couple more hours. These devices save the owner money and are environmentally more favourable than legacy thermostat solutions.

There probably are some slobs out there who are too lazy to get up to adjust their heating, but they do not represent the majority. Much like on this website there are the odd few that choose to post inflammatory and naive comments, whereas the majority of us are personable, helpful, friendly and like to make positive contributions to the HUKD community.
Oneday77 to PLANKT0N0
24 Dec 15 #55
You have over simplified what these devices do.
Yes an on\off switch on the heating will suffice for some. However: -
Does a switch know when you're heading home?
Does it recognise that actually it was a lot colder last night, best turn the heating on a bit earlier?
When you go on holiday, can you tell it that you forgot to disable the heating timers?

There is an element of convenience but that convenience makes the device more efficient at the same time.
ayaz51
24 Dec 15 #27
not sure i trust myself to do that. i still haven't got the hang of the boiler yet. All it seems to allow is both heat and water on or just water. Will the nest allow both?
andyk
24 Dec 15 1 #28
Jokes aside, there is more too it than just a remote app on your phone. It connects to the internet so knows the outside temperature. On a cold morning the heating is automatically turned on earlier to make sure its warm when you get out of bed. Its worth reading about a product before blindly commenting.
andyk
24 Dec 15 #29
The Nest stat will just control the heat on a combi boiler. My water heats up when I switch on the hot tap which is fine for me, takes slightly longer for hot water but that works for me.

24 Dec 15 #32
Bear in mind this does not have 'heating boost', something your 10+ year old thermostat will have. eg So you can't boost the heating on for x hours.
It's a US product, room heating was probably an after-thought to water heating

Looks nice though, that will probably sell it

I have this and its brilliant! It will definitely save you money on heating! Its constantly learning. If you are away and its freezing outside (minus), it will turn on just a bit to stop your pipes from freezing/bursting.

savings depend on your setup but can be significant - I don't have a Nest, but 3 years ago I did swap my 'standard' wireless thermostat/programmer for a weather & load compensating controller, and dropped my annual gas bill from £1000 to £400. And the house is more comfortable too.
suedrew
24 Dec 15 #39
I just moved into a new house that has two thermostats. Downstairs controls hot water and heating for downstairs and the upstairs one controls heating up there. Does anyone know what kind of nest set up I would need? I thought a 3rd gen down stairs and this one for upstairs.
gjpgjp to suedrew
24 Dec 15 #41

If your home has more than one thermostat then you could either buy one Nest and leave your other thermostat as it is. This would be fine and I had my set up for a while like this.

But to get the best you would need two Nests. You could have a 2nd gen upstairs and a third gen downstairs and the 3rd gen would operate the hot water. Or you could buy 2 second generations if you don't want to control your hot water through the nest.

Not really, if you are often out and about, then it will just turn the heating down instead of leaving it on timer and it heating the house for no reason.

Interested in getting one of these, am I right in thinking this really only benefits people who leave there heating on all the time? In our house we maybe have the heating and water on for a few hours a day other than that it's always turned off. I.e will turn the water on for a hour when there's none left in the water tank and hot water is needed or the heating on for a hour when the house feels a bit chilly.

I live in a new build, it has a Honeywell thermostat in the hall and a Siemens programmable timer in the utility room, will the nest work with my set up?

The homes that dont control their heating and leave it on unnecessarily will benefit the most.
Oneday77
24 Dec 15 #46
These are a good idea but that lack of hot water control was always a bad idea. Yes many people have combi's now but far from everyone.

I had Tado for a year and it wasn't, however just like Nest or Hive. It isn't very good for large homes with multiple rooms. It will measure the heat in that location and keep the heating on until the thermostat is happy.

I've gone for a Honeywell Evohome system and the house is much more comfortable now. Every room is now it's own zone with different heating schedules, no plumbing required.. Still need to fine tune some zones but it's good.
I will add it's a lot more expensive. In saying that 30% off Amazon Warehouse Deals from Italy helped reduce the cost  Also this lacks proper Geo-fencing that Tad, Hive and Nest have. I just need to get the IFTTT sorted.
mcaf123
24 Dec 15 #50
Which version did you get? I've been looking on all the Amazon sites for a while now and they only sell the older and non-wireless version of the Evohome. Also, the ones on Warehouse Deals right now are the starter kits with just the base and 3 valves - not even boiler control.
I've been quoted £700 for the latest wireless version with boiler connection and 8 valves including fitting - I'm just wondering if its worth the cost over something like the Nest.

How well does this work for shift workers with irregular shifts? I know you can set up programmes but how well does the earn my routine part work??
loftus to spud131
24 Dec 15 #57
I have a Netatmo, which is less sophisticated than the Nest but does all I need it to. I have set a basic schedule - 19° between 7am and 10pm and 10° between 10pm and 7am - and before I go to work I use the "Away" (10°) or "Frost Guard" (7°) setting, depending on the weather forecast, to override the schedule. Before leaving work to come home, a 1 and a half commute, I switch off the override and by the time I arrive the house is warm.
If I wanted to I could set up separate schedules for my shift patterns but I don't see the need. The system is also easy to adjust temporarily if I'm too cold or too hot when I'm in.
The Nest system is more sophisticated so can probably do more than that, I just didn't need more.
neal
24 Dec 15 #52
My plumber charged me £30 to put it in, if you want to self fit YouTube will hold your hand.
Oneday77
24 Dec 15 #54
I have the latest with built in Wi-Fi.
My setup includes Main unit, Boiler Control and 14 valves. I ended up fitting it myself as no one bothered to come back to me.
£700 is a lot of money, but if that is fitted then its quite good. Even the Evohomeshop website is £690 for the kit you've quoted. Which is the initial kit I bought then sourced extra HR92s on Amazon and eBay.

Will I save £1,000 on my heating, I'm not sure, possibly not. However do we feel more comfortable in the house and feel the heating works for us, yes we do. I will save more money if I can get the IfThisThenThat (IFTTT) integration to work for more than one person. That's not Honeywells Fault.

Nest will be great for some but useless for others, it's hard to say what is right for you.

1rhysdavies
24 Dec 15 #59
No it wouldn't as I got the same setup. It would only replace one thermostat.
You should have two heating valves to control the two zones.

The problem you got is that you need to set your heating to be constantly on as the best is the scheduler.

I have a program thermostat upstairs so I don't have a problem but do remember that.

nest 3rd is not just about hot water control. It can also be the one to go for if you have an opentherm compatible boiler. That is counting on nest to improve on its opentherm support. Also best third has Bluetooth smart so you might see some apps to control Bluetooth smart appliances in the future.
