Looks like Aldi are retaliating against Tesco & Asda, they've dropped their prices on Maris Piper Potatoes 2kg , Broccoli and 1kg Carrot to just 29p from 39p.
Update Thursday 11.00am

I think the only people being fleeced here are the poor farmers. How is it possible to plant , grow, harvest, pack and transport these items at this price and everyone make a profit.

I/we go between Lidl and Aldi for most of the groceries, Lidl weekend specials can be really good if you like the items. Tell you family, friends, the more people who save money by shopping there the quicker the likes of Tesco & Asda will have to price match, which will help those who do not have a Lidl/Aldi nearby.

I'm not sure to be honest. There could be plenty of reasons for it but I am more concerned about the waste that farmers are forced to discard because a carrot doesn't point perfectly straight....

15 Dec 155#12
You are right the farmers probably don't make much at all, and I feel for them! But as for the supermarkets, if they can sell them for 29p then why the hell have we been paying about £2 for maris pipers the last god knows how many years, some fat **** has a nice detached mansion with a ferrari parked outside because we felt we had no choice but to pay those prices!
Msic
15 Dec 151#14
I'd love it if Supermarkets felt enough trust in the customers to be transparent about their costs, eg 28% to farmers, 15% for transport, %50 to supermarket etc.
Shame, i cant see this happening.
Farmers need to grow on massive, massive scales these days in order to generate fractional profits. Tough times.
thomasleep to Msic

just curious but where did you get those figures from?
bdciffsd
15 Dec 154#16
Its not quite as black and white as 'cheaper the product, the less the farmer earns'. Although it might seem that way, and in many cases it might actually be that way, that isn't always the case. Supermarkets often take an extremely slim profit margin, no profit or actually go ever so slightly out of pocket for these deals to be on the shelves, because they know that the majority of people won't go into their stores for *just* the deals. Most people will go in for the deals and also do the rest of their weekly shop there, whereas otherwise they might have gone to Tesco or Asda. I'm probably the only person I know who will make a special trip to a shop for a good deal and not do any extra shopping there, and will probably never return to said store unless they have another great deal on.

potatoes generally wholesale for abut £3 - £4 for a 25kg sack week in week, and marginally less when tonnes are bought unbagged like the supermarkets do, these deals are simply the supermarket selling at cost price, or a few pence higher per bag, same with carrots etc, 10kg sacks are about £4 at the moment, and about £350 per tonne for bulk lots.

You're making some enormous assumptions here. Supermarkets can choose to sell at a loss if they wish , usually to get you through the door to buy other things.

16 Dec 15#34
Why do people think at this price the farmers are losing out? The supermarkets are happy to lose £1 a packet if it gets new customers through the door. Not many people go to a supermarket and buy only a bag of potatoes because its cheaper then their local..

I believe their buying model is also better for farmers/suppliers- Tesco force down a price and lock suppliers into contacts, whereas Lidl regularly 'shop' around for the the price they want, which then does potentially introduce some quality variation etc. (Not always a bad thing!).

Just so everyone knows, we call deals like this "loss leaders". Basically the farmers will get paid what they agreed to contractually. The majority of them are in an alliance and agree to a set price for a certain quality. They will continue to get paid these prices. The supermarkets just lower the price dramatically to encourage people to enter the store. They are fully aware that most people won't walk out with just a bag of potatoes and that's what they rely on.

I never saw a poor farmer, if it didn't pay, nobody would do it! The lower the price the better! far to many people using food banks in this country for anybody to have concerns for anybody involved in the food supply chain making less than they do already. These are obviously loss leaders the supermarkets take the hit on the price in the hope you buy the other full priced items they stock. They all do it, just seems that aldi and lidl do it on stuff that is actually healthy. Sorry but my sympathies are with the 1,084,604 people according to the trussell trust who used a food bank last year rather than the few farmers who actually went bust.

the price tesco pay is per tonne at the price at the farm gate, this will include a degree of sorting, the smaller farmers then deliver it to the packing agents, the like of branston like you mention, who tesco has annnual contracts with to packge the items they have bought direct ffrom farmers, the larger farms, grade, wash and package themselves and will deliver direct to a Tesco distribution centre for final delivery to store.
