The other really nice thing with Mac and the reason one of my friends bought one is that the default free software for photo and video editing is actually really good for 90% of people. Take the cost of Adobe off unless you are really serious and then compare to a PC. This laptop will do for 90% of people. Apart from converting video and gaming I can count on one hand the times I've really pushed either my quad core i7 PC or iMac or needed 16GB RAM.

Although I agree as love iPhoto and iMovie, if you're serious about editing then you'll want to connect this macbook up to a big screen.
Otherwise there's a lot of clever apps on tablets that can edit photos and videos without this expense. Many cameras themselves getting good enough at editing and uploading without the need for a computer.

I've a 2010 Thinkpad T series which is about to go on ebay for it's next owner to carry the torch on for a few years.
Sure the case has marks, track pad looks worn and the keys are kinda shiny, but the thing is a tank and that might be why people like these metal cased laptops. A Thinkpad X is actually more expensive than a mac if you want something macbook light.

I work in Enterprise IT (for HP) and my work laptop is a £1200 HP Elitebook with far higher specs than a MBPr....my personal choice of laptop is a MBPr and I'd buy it again tomorrow.

Both my Macs had build/ design quality problems that had me dusting off my old Thinkpads (which refuse to die). everything else you say is true, which is why many of us end up building our own OSX desktops.
The only decision to make here is whether you want to pay a premium for OSX, to me OSX is worth the £300 extra over a regular laptop. The Apple badge and long-in the-tooth metal finish certainly isn't.
Paradroid888
3 Dec 151#86
What a load of silly comments on this thread. Show me an all-metal build laptop with similar resolution display from the Windows world for the same money. And even if there was one it would have an inferior trackpad. And it would be worth an awful lot less after a few years.
Back the deal, it's not that hot I don't think. These are regularly £860 on Amazon, and were briefly £799 last week on Zavvi eBay output. I was going to get one until a very good post on here pointed out that if you put an SD card in it badly affects battery life in standby. And like people have said 128gb is not enough
Gold Feet to Paradroid888
4 Dec 15#101
Why do people feel the need to buy a fancy metal laptop though? Buy a regular laptop from plastic that has served us well in all fields and in laptops such as the old Thinkpads that were far better built than Apple's and N01 choice for anyone serious about build quality and durability, such as NASA .
This look is getting very long in the tooth now anyway, as Jonny Ive can't come up with anything since being heavily influenced by Dieter Rams. I imagine he'll soon bring back '10 flavour' fruit look.
Buy this if you want OSX and less hassle, but not as an investment.
You'll lose just as much money on an Apple as if you throw a cheaper Windows laptop in the bin after 6 years. eBay prices for older Apple MacBooks can vary a lot and is not the best place to judge as to what they're really worth, it's very easy to get £50 less than the next guy. Ironically there seems to be a good market for buying dead ones and selling them for parts.

airs have poor design whereby they die and are written off (blown system board) at the slightest bit of fluid on keyboard. This retina model has issues with the screen coating.

Why are people comparing the new XPS 13 with this? The XPS 13 is a no brainer compared to this. The new XPS 13 has Intel's Skylake processor which is a lot more power efficient and just faster speed-wise. AND it comes with the newer DDR4 ram along with Dell's infinite display with next to no border.
Also this 128GB SSD is a joke

Exactly. If your buying stuff based on specs that's fine. But other people might value build quality, usability or some other part of owning a computer.

actually, that's not quite what happens
every thread, without fail, has people jump in with some moan or other even when it's not asked for and not needed.
the problem is some people are just far too close minded. others are far too opinionated. and whilst some people here love a deal, others here love being cheap. the problem is when all those qualities are combined in one user, and jumps in on a thread singing the same boring old tune. yeah we get it, apple is expensive for some and yeah we get it, some don't like them for whatever reason. just don't chase every thread and make it all about your anti-appleness every damn time.

I'm sure a £200 laptop could last you 5+ years, provided that you treat it in the right way. Doesn't mean that it will perform any good compared to the newer computers available around that time. This thing may look durable but it sure as hell isn't built to last, specs are poor with only a dual core i5 CPU and 8GB of non upgradeable RAM. The SSD is only a puny 128GB and you cannot upgrade with a standard 2.5" hard drive.

If anyone wants valid reasons not to buy a Mac, start looking at the fact that they seem to be an ever-decreasing priority for Apple. The shops have a lot less on display, the App Store is pretty poor and they broke a lid of people's apps with a certificate expiry issue. Consider that and the iPad Pro and it's obvious which way they are going...

Be careful as there are two versions, you need the 300K iops NVMe version for the Macbook Pro Retina.
So in theory, you could upgrade this, good that the ram is 8GB, as this is soldered to the board.

my current macbook pro (2011) model doesn't void the warranty as i changed ram and hard drive - confirmed this with apple store as warranty was used multiple times over the next 3 years (student deal) - changed battery etc.
I have just heard that the new models are not unibody and cannot be opened without voiding the warranty which may mean i might move back to a PC. OSX has its advantages but not enough to pay almost 300 for a decent size SSD.

3 Dec 151#68
The one linked is 8GB ram model, which will make a big difference depending on what you are using it for.
I use an older Air (non-retina model) with the specs you mention as my work machine, and it performs the sort of tasks you'd expect perfectly. I have multiple browser tabs open at all times, regularly play video, am always working on Office docs and running programs like Spotify, SQLWorkbench, Slack, Filezilla, etc in the background and it rarely seems to suffer, never gets hot, never has an audible fan, etc (My colleague across from me has a more powerful Lenovo and I can occasionally hear his fan whirring to deal with similar tasks).
I would need the 8GB ram to handle the light gaming I would want to use my home one for, but in general the 4GB ram Air has been a great machine for me and convinced me to move to Apple for my next purchase.
DennisG
3 Dec 15#67
Wrong. According to this thread,
- you bought it for the brand and the brand only. you clearly don't care about user experience, OS, feel and design, you only want people to see the partially eaten fruit on your laptop because that's all you care about apparently.
- there exists an equivalent machine to the MBP (the XPS - in the same price bracket, but for some reason escapes any criticism) and also there are cheap windows machines therefore apple is neither the most powerful nor the cheapest and therefore automatically inferior
funny how all the people who call apple users sheep also sheepishly buy products like the moto G, chromecast, windows etc. the clear bias makes them brand anyone who buys something they don't agree with sheep, but people who buy the same items as them en masse are savvy consumers.
i just wish people didn't suspend logic so gravely when expressing their anti-apple sentiment

Someone with more technical knowledge than I might be able to answer this better, but I believe the clock speed of the CPU in the Air is slower than that of the Macbook Pro.

I is it for iOS and Android development with xcode and lately some Unity stuff too. Some of the projects can reach 6-8GB and when you have multiple configurations, it can all add up. I don't store any media on it as that's all on the NAS or the cloud.
It's not a complete no no, but is insulting in this day and age when a 240GB SSD can be had at retail for under £50. I'm not an Apple fan or an Apple hater. I appreciate the qualities of their products and have always had a good experience with them but there are some components that are needlessly marked-up and the consumer should hold back on willingly forking out for certain things to force Apple to think again.

Dell XPS range are a good example as I reckon they are the closest to Macbook buikd quality in a Windows equivalent.
The new XPS 13 with i5 processor, 8GB RAM and 256GB hard drive is £949. It's basically fairly in line with Apple pricing. Given that the OS is still less reliable than in the Macbook and that the Apple product generally holds it's price better, I'd still say the MBP is the better option. Whatever manufacturer you go for though, you pay a premium for the top end of the market (Macbook Pro, XPS, Surface Pro, etc)
You can always find better spec for less cost, but its a hugely shortsighted way to look at buying a laptop.
Edit: that was meant to be in reply to the poster who mentioned the XPS range, not some random unprovoked Dell rant.

I got the XPS 13 not too long ago, maxed it out. I thought I could go back to a Windows laptop, fancied a touch screen.... I sent it back after 2 days. Awful compared to a Mac. A MacBook Pro (I personally use a 15" model) is just in a different league in terms of user experience IMO. On a desktop, Windows is fine. I use Windows 10 on my gaming PC and quite like it, but on a laptop I'll take Mac OS any day. There's more to a device than specs, and Apple nails every other part. Design, build and experience trump better hardware for me.
ipswich78 to AzorAhaiMark
3 Dec 151#57
I've recently moved from WIndows to the Apple platform - yes, hardware specs vs specs you can get a more powerful machine running Windows - BUT, for me the biggest strength for Apple is that the software is developed specifically for the Hardware.
With Windows you have a number of versions i.e. Windows 10 and 8 AND variants within them, added to that the 1000's of hardware configurations and that's why i've you can shout about all the specs in the world, but very few Windows machines are configured to specifically run on the hardware in hand.
This isn't a Pro Apple / Anti 'PC' thing, it's just an alternate opinion. I love technology and always like to play around with different things - i've been 'PC' for over 20 years and am so far enjoying moving platforms.

Yeah, I have only ever owned Windows laptops but have been using a Macbook Air at work for 12 months now and I must admit that the experience has been great. Having actually worked for one of the tech companies mentioned in this thread and using their laptops for years, I had no end of problems with various models. I see by far more issues with my colleagues using Windows than Macs. That being said, if I needed high spec for gaming or anuthibg else intensive, there's no way I would pay for a top end Mac, they are just a grrat fit for the upper end of the laptop market.
I was between the XPS, Surface Pro or MBP for my next purchase and I wasn't getting much more for my money from any of them.

The SSD is not soldered on, but you will need a pentelobe screwdriver to unscrew it. Also the SSD models for the Early 2015 model Macbook are very rare, older SSDs are either not compatible or much slower so do your research.
There is a youtube video about upgrading the SSD in an Early 2015 macbook pro.
errr no, it's not about the brand. it's not like buying a designer handbag which carries stuff in the same manner as any other bag where muppets purely pay for a logo.
amongst the things you pay for that aren't related to slavishly following a brand are design, longevity, ease of use, software and OS and so on.

Also, you may think its just a "nice" thing/laptop and so you're willing to spend extra but the same could go for someone buying a rolex as opposed to a cheaper watch, that kind of person could be said to either be well-off in which case I question why they're on a deals site OR they're the type of idiot that spends more than they can afford blindly.

Otherwise there's a lot of clever apps on tablets that can edit photos and videos without this expense. Many cameras themselves getting good enough at editing and uploading without the need for a computer.
It's brilliant! Never had a problem with it. Specs are good and the display is wicked.
Yes, it's pretty expensive but you won't be disappointed!

I don't think any of the people who just look at specs per £ will ever 'get' Macbooks.
The only decision to make here is whether you want to pay a premium for OSX, to me OSX is worth the £300 extra over a regular laptop. The Apple badge and long-in the-tooth metal finish certainly isn't.
Now the hard bit air or pro
I've owned both now and not happy with the way Apple hasn't addressed either problem. I gave up and built my own desktop for OSX.
Also this 128GB SSD is a joke

I have a surface pro 3 because I need Windows and it provides the most Mac-like experience i.e. nice build quality and no shovel ware. Lovely machine but still not quite up to Mac standards overall. And very nearly the same price.
every thread, without fail, has people jump in with some moan or other even when it's not asked for and not needed.
the problem is some people are just far too close minded. others are far too opinionated. and whilst some people here love a deal, others here love being cheap. the problem is when all those qualities are combined in one user, and jumps in on a thread singing the same boring old tune. yeah we get it, apple is expensive for some and yeah we get it, some don't like them for whatever reason. just don't chase every thread and make it all about your anti-appleness every damn time.
I use a PC to play games on because trying to do so on a Mac would be insane.
I use a Mac/Macbook to work on because trying to do so on a PC would be insane.
They two aren't interchangeable or comparable IMO.
My friend spent £980 on some designer hi tops at Harvey Nichols, and they were ON SALE, obviously his family and i were shocked at this purchase but he is young and can afford it, thats his lifestyle.
Scan sell them OEM, not retail:

Be careful as there are two versions, you need the 300K iops NVMe version for the Macbook Pro Retina.
So in theory, you could upgrade this, good that the ram is 8GB, as this is soldered to the board.
Not tried this, but had proposed trying this once I fill my 256GB drive.
Its about if its a deal or not
Its £100 off the retail price of which makes it a deal
If someone can find it cheaper then yes say so
Maybe some one should make a website called

Every apple thread there is always an Apple fanboy who can't handle opposing views. Apple sucks... there, I said it.
I have just heard that the new models are not unibody and cannot be opened without voiding the warranty which may mean i might move back to a PC. OSX has its advantages but not enough to pay almost 300 for a decent size SSD.
I fail to see why this is a hot deal looking at specs.
I was between the XPS, Surface Pro or MBP for my next purchase and I wasn't getting much more for my money from any of them.
however i believe ssds and ram are soldered in - can someone confirm if this applies to the newest models? (air/pro)
It's like saying an Xbox One deal isn't a deal because its not as cheap as a PS4
128GB is ridiculously small.

Comedy gold.
amongst the things you pay for that aren't related to slavishly following a brand are design, longevity, ease of use, software and OS and so on.
I tried so hard to hold back the tears! HaHaHaHaHa XD

Any Windows can do that?
in my opinion, any apple deal is poor value for money and does not necessarily mean its more reliable than a windows laptop.
How many of u have iphones

How many of u have nice houses?

This site is about deals not about the item in question
Its a £100 saving
Simple as that
U dont like it go and moan else were
Dells Current XPS range destroys on specs for cost, and HP envy line is thinner and far more desirable design etc.. Apple Devices are 100% about brand and fashion, because personally OSX is anceint OS and Apple need to sort it out.
Someone is having a giraffe...
