Kobo aura (non hd model) can be had for reasonable money and its a great device.

do you know if you can add notes to pages or pdf files with the kobo?
i've never had an ereader and im actually planning to buy two, one would be for a present and the person would hopefully use it to read books for classes

Yeah you can add notes to pages, and can look at them quickly via the annotations button. Search for the kobo aura user guide pdf for more info. You cant add notes make changes to pdf files as far as i can remember. There are some high end and very pricey eink pdf note takes around but that's not what you want i think.
There are quite a few different kobo devices If i was buying now i'd get the Glo hd buy im happy with my aura (and its micro sd slot!)
