Please note this is the classic not the artisan seems a reasonable price (not a lot of dough)

Am I the only one who can't understand someone paying this much money for a mixer?????

They are built like tanks - all parts are made of metal, most of professionals buy them, because they are reliable and well designed, plenty of accessories available. If you don't cook often or if you prefer buying new cheap one every year then it is your choice. In my opinion they look amazing!

To put it simply, it's a lot better than cheaper mixers. If you like baking and can afford it then it's worth it.
You can pay high and low prices for pretty much anything - computers, phones, cameras, cars, clothes, shoes, furniture, the list is endless. Someone who wants to do demanding work on a computer will naturally spend more than someone that just wants to browse the web and check email. It's only a bad deal if you're paying a high price for something that's not significantly different to a lower priced item. Which is not the case here.

Trained professional baker here: for home I had a classic mixer for a number of years and it served me very well, passed it on and got the 6.9L bowl-lift.
Some advice for people deciding between Artisan and Classic:
For a start these mixers have a full metal body unlike others which are plastic, they're also pretty weighty.
The difference in motor performance is minimal and you shouldn't use more than 500g of flour for bread in either model.
Both use nylon gears (can be prone to fail under heavy use), the 6.9L bowl-lift uses all metal.
The Classic doesn't have a splash guard - I don't use mine because it doesn't really work and it rattles.
The Classic bowl is brushed not polished (hides scratches), and doesn't have a handle - lack of handle was a bit annoying. The bowl size is 500ml smaller which is unnoticeable - if it's so important you can buy an additional bowl with what you save.
The Classic only comes in white.
The Whisk/Dough Hook/Paddle are the same for the Classic and Artisan, Hub attachments are interchangeable between models as is the ice cream bowl.
Unless it needs to be a specific colour the Classic is a great mixer and I'd always pick it over the Artisan.
For die-hard, bake every day, big quantities you're better off looking at the 6.9L model.

I have the classic and love it to be honest, I hate splash guards so its a wasted extra to me on the artisan
