I have had a very bad experience of Homeserve. I had 3 Homeserve plumbers attend an emergency that I had and not one managed to sort the problem. When I complained to the company they then started fobbing us off with excuses.

I ended up fixing the problem myself! I, as a non-professional Home DIYer, had more knowledge than these so-called Homeserve "Plumbers". I eventually ditched the insurance. No more !

Before you take out any policy with this company, I suggest you do some research !

Here's some interesting stuff (including dubious business practices):

I took out this cover in mid September. Called them out for blocked drain, engineer turned up within 1 our and did a good job. Called 2nd time for dripping wash basin taps, they sent a plumber within 2 days. He changed the taps and he did a professional job. So, from my point of view, can't knock them. If I need to call them again within this cover period and service is as good as these two occasions, I would be thinking to continue for next cover period for £96 a year.

I can beat that Mav01. Over 2 wks in a freezing February, 8 month old baby in the house. Incompetence doesn't begin to describe Homeserve. They may be OK with a dripping tap but heating, no way. My boiler was only 2 yrs old. The problem was a loose wire on the circuit board. Did Homeserve spot it? No. They practically rebuilt the boiler, told me parts weren't available (not that they were needed anyway). I found a stockist not 2 miles away.

The boiler was never any good after Homeserve had stripped it and I had same problem that winter. Boiler had to be reached eventually. Avoid! It's cheap for a reason.

I agree as we had same experience. Plummer came out twice - we had a drain smell in the bathroom upstairs. Fist time he did not turn up at specified time and when he came he did not sort out the problem. He requested to remove wall to our loft before he can have a look at the drainage. We didn't want to do it as all would had to be put back again. My dad looked behind the toilet and one of the pipes was disconnected. We fixed it yourself. Customer services are not very good either if you complain.

I wouldn't recommend Homeserve - my mother paid them for 15 years by DD, when she came to need them they said she'd never informed them she'd moved home (in 1997) so the property she lived in wasn't covered. Load of c**p - she'd paid them over £1500 and they wouldn't refund any of the payments, even though they accepted that mail to her to the old address had been returned to sender.

Don't touch this company. They left our family for over a week with no hot water or heating last winter. And were simply shocking - failed callbacks, engineers not turning up and when they did being rude and useless. Please please don't give them the time of day. And they do not even offer emergency call-outs out of hours!

If you have kids under 11 or you are over 70 then then they come out asap. ive got a new boiler and have cover just for a service booked it 2 weeks ago and it will be january before they come out. wont have home serve after my service.

this deal is for pipes and drainage not boiler cover, hundreads of good reviews aswell as the bad, lets be fair here and unbiased
but this is not alot of money this is 50p per month
in my case it would have cost me hundreads of pounds for the burst pipe, and not so much for the leaky taps
but cost me £6 and i am covered for as many call out as i need
so in my view it is a no brainer , but if people would rather pay hundreads insted of 50p a month its their choice...

I use to had a Homeserve policy a few years ago. I had to have a new boiler fitted. Not only did the pipes to the new boiler leak where they hadn't installed it properly, the electrics to the boiler were unfair. In total they had to come out 3 times.

Seriously I would avoid.

trustpilot is a completely biased site paid by the companies using their service to create false misrepresentations of their service/products by removing all negative feedback claiming non conformaty to certain t&c's. Ask yourself one question people.... how independent would you deem a internet based reviews search engine where the companies listed 'pay' to be on there!!! Trustpilot earns a fortune offering shoddy companies better ways of 'screen' bad reviews.

I'm a current plumber at homeserve and I have to agree and disagree with a lot off comments made here. Yes there are faults within the company but that's the same as every home maintenance company and a lot falls down to people's own opinions. If you have a look at reviews on websites such as trust pilot etc you can see that they are rated highly and above so called leading market companies such as British Gas and AA. I agree with the comments made with regards to boiler issues. All boiler issues are sub contracted at this present moment in time which you find a lot of the negative comments are about however, homeserve are now opening there own gas department employing homegrown tradespeople to rectify the issues that people have come across. All in all regardless of myself working for them for plumbing and drainage for £6 is an absolute steal and they are well reputable within that sector.

They are also making a huge push in all the trade mags to use subbies.

I'm pretty sure they are selling insurance, and so you can make a complaint to the financial services ombudsmen for any poor service - the threat of this will get any issues solved very quickly, (it certainly works with British Gas).

I had boiler cover. The psu failed. It took 47 days between reporting the problem for homeserve to resolve it due to a catalogue of errors including misdiagnosis, incorrectly ordered parts, missed appointments. 47 days without heating or any hot water. We were 'prioritised' due to having a 1 year old child. Their own engineers were embarrassed at how incompetent their call centres were. £6 sounds a bargain but anything less routine than a leaky tap or an absolute emergency, I'd rather rely upon a reputable company.

I used to be with them, then my boiler needed some repair. They sent one guy, he cleaned the boiler, but a week later the same fault came back. They sent somebody else, but he could not find the fault and they told me that they would not do anything else on it until I power/pressure clean the whole system.Cost ~ £400. I called an independent plumber, within 10 mins found a faulty valve, replaced it. Cost just over £30. I managed to get the invoice paid by HomeServe, but left them at the end of the contract. But for £6 for 1 year, if you cancel after that, I guess it is worth it

Have gone for this, thanks op.

I have British gas cover for my boiler (which I can't fault. Boiler leak was fixed in under 12 hours) and my home emergency covers this but I figure for 50p a month having a backup can't hurt and if it is utter crap then it's not a massive loss.

I had full cover for drains but when mine blocked they did everything they could to get out of unblocking it. "Its the wrong type fo drain - its not covered"

They only backed down when i said fine i will cancel all my policies worth £300 per year.

Even then they said if the enginerr reports back it was the worong type of drain i would get a bill.

I spoke to the endineer he was fine and promised i wouldnt.

Last year they didnt do my annual service on my boiler and refused cashback.

Dodgey is not the word BUT go for the first year then leave. Dont pay full price for their dodgey cover. Put it to one side to pay on a rainy day and choose your own person to do it.

It is really useful to know what it costs after the introductory year. It is also really useful to have feedback on their service (good or bad). Having both good and bad feedback means members can weigh up the pros and cons and make a more informed decision ......

Feedback from members who have purchased a product or service is one of the best aspects of the comments section.

Do you work for HomeServe Craig? You seem to be taking any negative comments very personally.

I got this deal earlier this year. I'm not sure I'd renew, even at this price. It took 4 visits to fix a very minor leaking kitchen tap. Initial leak was running into the sink. First repair caused a leak under the sink that damaged my kitchen cabinet. They were hours late for every visit. First visit was supposed to be between 08:00-13:00 and they finally turned up at 17:00, their network was down and none of their engineers could access job details on their iPads. I'd hate to think what sort of damage could have been caused if I had an emergency.

I guess it depends how much you value your time. I would prefer to have paid a plumber to fix my minor issue. I guess for larger problems it may be worth it.

2 Dec 15 1 #35
I know. Read the experiences mentioned in other posts where forum members have had plumbing call-outs.
As my electrician said, insurance companies tend to have sub-standard workmen on their roll, as he pointed out, any half-decent tradesman would work for themselves via Checkatrade and Rightmove and would not have time left for insurance work which pays a fraction of an independent job.

Together with the arsey get-out clauses in the small print this strategy saves them a lot of money.

Obviously for 50p a month anyone can take a punt and if it works out, fine, otherwise you will still money left to call out an independent plumber.

Yup I agree. Had the full cover with them which covers heating, plumbing, electrics etc. Had an issue with bathroom lights not working, paid the £50 call out charge and the electrician brings up some baloney about the bathroom lights not being wired in line with the newest BS standards and refusing to do the job. Wasted my 50 quid and called out an independent electrician who immediately pinpointed the problem to a blown transformer to the bulbs, an hour and £80 later and all repaired and working fine.

On looking at the finer print, it appears they had changed their electrical reg requirements on homes for their electrical cover to be valid, in mid-2014. Previously the requirement had been that the electrical installation should be in line with standards applicable to the property WHEN BUILT, they had then changed it so that any fault's repairable only if the installation complies with the latest BS standards that are applicable to NEW homes. So, any property built before 1987 when the newest regs were introduced are ineligible for electrical cover under Homeserve. You couldn't make it up.

The engineer who did the actual repair told me this is one of those arsey get-out clauses,.in fact the regulating body will issue an electrical safety certificate for any property so long as the installation complied with regs in place at the time but this is not enough for Homeserve!

Buy their comprehensive cover at your peril, you've been warned.
Not sure about the plumbing cover as I've never used them for that.

I have had similar problems with them - booked this earlier this year fir £6 - had standing water under my suspended ground floor - took 6 months and god knows how many visits for them before they admitted there was a problem and repaired it.
I had "clean water" engineers out, "dirty water" engineers out - then told it was just ground water table and the smell was a dead rodent that had found its way in - then I took all my decking up as they said the water must be getting in through a hole in the house wall below ground level - then united utilities out (three times)- back to clean water / dirty water etc for months - finally they "spotted" that somehow the drain outside had shifted off the pipe below and repaired it...6 months of horrible foul smelling stagnant dirty water !

Hence my comment about it being rude not to renew :stuck_out_tongue:

whats that got to do with the deal?
does that make it a bad deal, just cancel after year 1 simple
jh787 to Victoriaa

When you ring to cancel they will try and keep you as a customer.
I ended up staying for another year at £3 per month.(zero excess)
As for their service.. It's a mixed bag.
I have called them out many times.
My upstairs toilet pipe getting blocked all the time.
First few times they came and jetted it clear but it was happening every few weeks or so.
I got on the phone after third or fourth time and asked them to do a proper repair because it's the same problem every time.
They sent 2 vans and stuck a camera down the drain and found it had collapsed.
Dug up the garden and repaired it.
All was well for a bit then same problem. Called them again and they stuck the camera down again.
This time they found that when the drain collapsed a chunk of clay drain pipe had worked its way down the soil pipe.
He broke it up and flushed it through.
Been a year or so.. No problems.

All for 50p a month!.

I thought it would be rude of me not to renew.

Overall I am extremely pleased with their service.
If they had dropped the camera down on first or second visit it would saved a lot of hassle

Ah well, never mind. It was a good idea while it lasted!
FWIW, I've called Homeserve out twice this year and they've been great. Attended within 24 hours both times and fixed the problem with no hassle. I'd definitely recommend them based on the service I've had.

I've got Homeserve Cover 8 at the minute, but it has a £50 excess. Anyone know if I could take out this policy as well? £6 for the year is a lot cheaper than even 1 call out so would be worth it.

no you cant have both, i tried that, it clashes

It is not a question of liking or disliking Homeserve or "scuppering deals".

They simply don't "deliver" when it matters !!!

ok mate we get the messgae you dont like homeserve, anyone would think you trying to scupper this deal..

here are some recent (2015) reviews:

http://www.reviewcentre.com/reviews259929.html

Still shows a pattern of not being able to deal with home emergency issues. As Homeserve claims to be "professional", it should not be down to the "Quality" of the plumber - if they know what they are actually doing. In our case, they failed three times !

I got it last year for £9 per month but also got £100 back from Quidco. need to cancel in January

The link is from 6/7 years ago? But I get your point. I am sure Sainsbury's Home Insurance use Homeserve as well but I guess it is down to the nature of the problem and the quality of plumber.

Ok...I am simply pointing out that this company can't deal with emergencies that matter. eg. Boiler problem, Heating problems, plumbing issues.

The money that I paid for the insurance was a loss to me as they never fixed the problem which I ended up dealing with myself!

I would not even give them a penny !

It is ultimately up to you if you wish to deal with this company - I am simply pointing out the problems a lot of people have encountered when dealing with Homeserve.

Here's some more information:

Thanks just reminded me to cancel mine.
No nasty shocks.
Will wait a month and then let the missus take it out in her name.

great deal. Just mark up your calendar to cancel before auto renewal then take the deal out again. it's nearly always on.

well if people forget to cancel that's how much it is after the first year currently.
And as for the deal don't you think my comment shows how much of a saving yours is eh?
