Do a bit of research on the codes on the back of your special oil can then do some on the back of regular motor oil and you will soon realise you're more than happy to be conned and me and the others aren't....

I've never understood spending a tenner more for 'special' motorcycle oil when they are essentially the same product. Having worked for the last 22 years at a well known motorcycle dealership, for the last 15 years we have sold and serviced bikes using bulk bought Castrol Magnatec 10w40 without issue. The real problem lies with folk being tight and not changing the oil at regular service intervals.

So not spending the extra tenner is not being tight but not doing it at regular service intervals is?
I just do mine every year anyway even though it comes out clean. It's only £25 for oil and filter too.
I've never understood putting car oil in bikes to save a tenner.

£3 per litre is a great price for fully synth & I've used halfords oil for many yrs. It's good stuff.
However I've been swayed in the last couple of yrs by the Triple QX oil sold by Eurocarparts. It's also very good oil & if bought when on offer (they just had a bogof) it works out at less than £2 per litre for fully synth. I paid £39.86 for 4x5L.
Motorcycle oil is a bug bear of mine too, it is made from the same base stocks with LESS additives, but costs MORE! Grrrrr. It's difficult to find motor oil at a good price, without friction modifiers, that isn't marked up in price and sold as motorcycle oil. It's a con but hard to avoid unless you really shop around for bike oil on a clearance deal or a job lot on eBay once in a while. Although many bikers use normal car oil without any issues whatsoever, I've not done this myself and I've read stories on forums that if your clutch plates are coated with the wrong (car) oil it can take a couple of flushes to get a good clutch action back again.
Keep an eye out for Elf motorcycle oil on offer; it's less well-known than the big brands (silkolene, rock oil, motul, putoline, etc) but in my experience and in many bikes, is as good as the pricier big brands. Also it comes out quite dirty when changed, which is a good sign that it's doing its job well.

I put any oil in my bike that has NOT got friction reducing additives, motorcycle oils are a rip off in opinion. Not making the wet clutch slip is what you're trying to avoid.

???? What is the difference if the rating is similar???? Apart from dodgy additives, that is.

Similar price. I think for halfords own it's about £15.
To get a trade card, go to the counter and bluff you are a self employed mechanic. Some staff might want evidence, others don't care. If they want evidence, a letterhead and / or business card will do it. You'll also save on chain lube etc

how do you get a trade card and that sort of price for m/c oil I doubt?
It's very often on offer for £12 ...and 4L package is not very useful for many people, 5L of Shell fully synthetic for £17(after code) at eurocarparts is much better buy

5w40 is best spec if your car isn't fussy.
