Depends if you want lively or abit chilled out. Playa del ingles is abit lively but still family friendly. Or you could go to puerto rico which is still lively but more suited for family's. Or there's also puerto mogan which is very quiet and a very traditional Spanish village.

Peurto rico is built on the sides of a valley so make sure you stay near the bottom if you have children or taxis will be a must (very cheap anyway). Or also look at amadores which is next door to Puerto Rico but very quiet. One of the best beaches I have ever been to.

I have only ever been during the summer months which is usually 30 - 35 degrees Celsius during days so cannot comment on weather during December. You will probably need a jumper for evenings though
