- Been posted before but live again

http://www.edimax.com/edimax/merchandise/merchandise_detail/data/edimax/global/wireless_routers_ac750/br-6208ac/

"The Edimax BR-6208AC router supports the next generation IEEE 802.11ac wireless standard, meaning higher data rates in the 5GHz band. With 300Mbps speeds in the 2.4GHz band and 433Mbps speeds in 5GHz, the BR-6208AC is ideal for HD video streaming and large file transfers. "

- It seems good value if you need to do some bridging/access pointing for some moderate internet use, this will be fine for facebooking/youtube/hukd activities if you need it to go to the garage or an outbuilding.

So far so good. I've disabled the 2.4GHz band and use only 5GHz. No dropouts so far (touch wood) and the range isn't too bad either for 5GHz.

I see the one I posted at Argos has a USB, plug a portable hard drive and use it as a network drive/media server. Doesn't look like the edimax has a USB.

depends on the wiring in your house. Houses built within the last 30 years are pretty good. I use 3. They work amazingly. cuts down on wires and devices around the house.

They're wide because they're bonded.
http://wifijedi.com/2009/01/25/how-stuff-works-channel-bonding/
But you're correct, 433 is four bonded channels, my mistake.

Cable all day long. Find a decent spark and they would probably be happy for some cash work on the weekend.

6 Dec 15 #35
The channels aren't bonded, they're just wide and 433Mbps/5GHz is four channels wide. But everything else you say is correct, although I do live in the country :stuck_out_tongue:.

Cabling the house is in my opinion the only true solution to the problem, Ive also used the outside, just layed it together with the satellite installation (lots of zip ties)

50/50 chance either way of success (imo), but decent powerline adaptors can apparently do the job in most cases.

Would this be any good to connect my ps4 to my router by using the bridge as the ps4 is connected via wifi but my nat is coming up as moderate so won't allow me to play online.

Previous my ps4 was connected to the router via ethernet cable and worked with no issues but I've had to move the router downstairs and my nat is now moderate rather than open
Krizzo3 to NFS
4 Dec 15 1 #4
You could try using this as a bridge and hooking the PS4 with ethernet, but to be fair its a 50/50 chance of improvement (imo)

I use a homeplug to connect straight to my PS4 from my router instead of using wireless as my router is downstairs.

I actually purchased that Asus router last week to replace my frankly horrible BT Home Hub 5. Best purchase I've made in a while! Speeds are actually extremely close to what they should be now, I haven't had a single drop out so far and the range is light years ahead of the HH5.

5 Dec 15 #28
I had three of this class of entry level AP at home and they are fine.
I purchased a high end unit from Asus 2 years ago this single unit replace 3 APs just for Wifi coverage.
http://www.hotukdeals.com/deals/asus-dsl-ac68u-wireless-router-ac1900-dual-band-109-99-currys-2334750

I also bit the bullet and cabled up the house (cables run on the outside of the house to keep the cost down) and purchased a 24 port switch. The Asus is amazing.

Superhub is good but not for major use such as pc/console, I have my computers etherneted and on wifi its just the phones.
voodooboard
5 Dec 15 #26
It supports 300Mbps on the 2.4GHz radio using bonded channels. But bonded channels are not reliable on the 2.4Ghz band. A requirements of the wifi spec is that stations don't use bonded channels on 2.4 if they detect nearby stations. So in reality 150Mbps on the 2.4 band is more realistic unless you live in the countryside.

With an AC device it supports 433Mbps on the 5GHz using three bonded channels. And bonded channels are much more reliable on 5GHz due to the short range and fewer devices.

So the AC connection is likely to be faster over short range. 433 vs 150.

Super hub is a joke it has poor range , drops out a lot and prone to interference. I've tried all sorts changing channels , frequencies , location still same problems., resetting it once a day helps but I didn't get broadband to be resetting routers daily.
shopaholic8
5 Dec 15 #24
As Virgin know, lots of people are having problems with the super hub and x-box 1. I spent an entire day going through my router making all the suggested changes to ports/security settings etc and still there was a problem with the NAT. I then put the router into modem mode and tried to use a buffalo router. Wouldn't work. So I had to reset the Virgin router and re-connect. Hey presto the x-box 1 now connects via wifi!! For the ps4 that's upstairs we connect via home plugs - so both kids can be gaming with no degradation in signal.

If I hooked up my Sky router to this via ethernet and disable the sky wifi, would this give better coverage? Not impressed with the Sky wifi capability around the house, 40mb in to the router, 24-26 wifi at absolute best and more often <20mb :disappointed:

Does this work with virgin? The Virgin router is horrendous
noddle36 to Rums123
5 Dec 15 #21
Thought it was just me that was having problems with the new Virgin Router, it kept on crashing when there where too many computer connected so had to set it to modem mode and attach my own router to stop this.

I asked Virgin about this and they said that nobody else had this problem.

You need a modem with this. So yes but it wont solve your problems.

Exactly what I need to know. Plusnet router is awful. Willing to pay up to £50 or £60 for one that does the job, doesn't drop and has a wifi signal that is useable more than one floor away.

Great specs for the money if wireless is your main concern.
Sadly only 100M ports.
I'm in the market for a budget DSL router with concurrent dual band, high gain antennas and Gigabit ports. If it could run custom firmware to support VPN even better. Any suggestions peeps? Doesn't have to be a new model if I could source a second user one.
I was looking at the D-Link DIR 825 because I used to run a DIR 615 which was rock solid with DD WRT.

5 Dec 15 1 #16
What other options are there for similar money to replace bog standard box supplied by plusnet? Having ac and dual band. Any advantage over this one from Argos apart from price.
http://www.argos.co.uk/m/static/Product/partNumber/4345730.htm

Edit: the tp-link one from Argos is not a modem, same as this edimax one.

It is AC, using the RTL8881AQ chipset. It's just not full speed AC because it only uses a 1x1:1 stream.

The chances are its 2.4GHz N connection is faster than its AC one.
jamgin
5 Dec 15 1 #13
Nice. Shame the LAN ports are only 100 mb
Krizzo3
5 Dec 15 #12
This is why I think this does not have the ac standard, also with ac you should really have gigabit ethernet but this is only 100mbit

The Edimax BR-6208AC router supports the next generation IEEE 802.11ac wireless standard, meaning higher data rates in the 5GHz band. With 300Mbps speeds in the 2.4GHz band and 433Mbps speeds in 5GHz, the BR-6208AC is ideal for HD video streaming and large file transfers.

Well maybe I am wrong, if you get AC, be happy

The manufacturer's own spec. page certainly does:

http://www.edimax.com/edimax/merchandise/merchandise_detail/data/edimax/uk/wireless_routers_dual-band/br-6208ac/

- Next generation 802.11ac Wi-Fi standard
- 5-in-1 Router, Access Point, Range Extender, Wireless Bridge and WISP
- Backward compatible with 802.11a/b/g/n standards
- Concurrent dual-band wireless connectivity for 2.4GHz and 5GHz
- High gain fixed antennas for better Wi-Fi performance
- Supports up to 8 Multi-SSID (2.4GHz x 4 and 5GHz x 4) & VLAN (AP mode only)
- Supports guest network (router mode only)
- Revolutionary iQoS for efficient and effective internet bandwidth management

Assuming I've got the right product, and am pretty sure I have.

Honestly I always switch off any "security" features of the routers simply because the cause more trouble than good, have a strong WPA password and you will be fine, switch everything else off and give it a go.
