Got some of these when they were half price but now just 79p! Seems good for stocking filler or just for treats.

Heated. How do these work please - Do I need six discs for 6 characters, or will 1 disc serve all 6 characters, or does one character need multiple discs for multiple abilities please?

They don't "need" any. There are various discs some change the toybox worlds land or sky, some add vehicles or objects. The ones that go beneath the characters can add things like 10% health which aren't character specific, there are however ones that are character specific like Gamoras space armour or Spidermans black suit.
In all cases (as far as i know) you can only add up to 2 discs per section of base \ under a character.
i cant get over what a con infinity is. whats wrong with making a game with all the characters already in it?

Agree that it's just one big money making scheme but at the end of the day, the characters are also collectible and can be played with away from the game. Do agree that these power ups are a bit over the top really but paying 79p for 2 is much more manageable than £4.99 in some cases! I think games like infinity and skylanders etc should follow the in-app purchase model... Make the game itself free or extremely cheap, but then make money from the extras.
Please also note that on the £1.49 'Power Disc Coins' these have a special offer which makes them BOGOF.
So I've ordered 2 packs of Disney Infinity Series 3 Power Discs, 2 packs of Disney Infinity Series 2 Power Disc Coins and 2 packs of Disney Infinity 2.0 Power Disc Originals for £4.65
