Bought a Dell Inspiron 17-3721 in 2013 new for £350 with
Intel® Core™ i5-3337U (3M Cache, up to 2.7 GHz)
6GB RAM 1600MHz
1TB HDD
17.3 inch High Definition+ (1600 x 900)
How could this thing still price at £500 today with not much improvement????
It is still U version i5, no FHD, no SSD, only integrated graphic card, not a prestige model, other than 17 inch, why should it be priced at £500.
There must be something better for £500.

Truelife FHD (1920 x 1080) version on offer direct from Dell for only £50 more, until 7/12/2015 ...
Was looking at a laptop for my dad. All he does it web browsing and emails.
After reading the comments on that deal, the previous 3 or 4 on here then an hour of youtube videos they look the best price for basic computing. Noted that Skype does not work on these with video and audio, only text unless you are willing to mess about getting it working.
Look at this video for the basics of a Chromebook and decide if its enough for your needs.Chromebook For Beginners

Many thanks, don't really know much about laptops, just use for surfing web, online purchases, banking mainly! A bit of skype and maybe a bit of catch up tv. Screen size is good and like the 3yr warranty. Don't mind the price as we usually only change laptop about every 4/5 years. Thanks for you input, might have another wee look around!

Integrates graphics are using poo. But the Intel HD 5000 series Aren't too bad. Not brilliant, but fine for video playback.

I could not agree more with Trevanator.
If you do not have to have 17 inch, you are looking for around £300 for 15.6 or 14 inch with similar specs.
