Got this for £40 from homesense after various discounts and promotions. This machine is just fantastic and Brother is one of the world's top sewing machine manufacturing company. £55 is a very good price.

Do British people buy/use sewing machines any more? Or is it an art that only the non British indulge in?

Yeah, if you are a British passport holder then for some inexplicable reason you will not buy nor use a sewing machine.
All sewing machines are bought by people who don't hold a British passport

Well I'm British and I own several sewing machines as I'm a dressmaker, so yes we do use them. not sure how being British would make a difference.
