7kg is quite a lot.
If you want to be very silly/stupid (delete as appropriate) when on holiday in Spain take the hire car to Seròn to view how the hams are made. Next get drawn in so much that a lovely Spanish man is loading a 12.5kg full leg ham into the back seat (would not fit in boot) and taking €100 off you.
When you get back to the apartment you realise you fly home in 2 days and "What the hell am I doing" hits you. After several beers you sell it for €40 to the bar man having not eaten any of it and now €60 out of pocket.
But nobody is that stupid, right!? :disappointed:

Nice - but when you consider the amount of actual usable ham (excluding the bone) on this, wouldn't you be better off buying it loose? Even from Waitrose?

It's hard to tell but I don't think this smaller version has a bone. If not it'd probably go a pretty long way

6 Dec 154#7
Hi, just to help you out, this cut has no bone so you have all meat. Jamon serrano does last a long time after its open, as long as you have it covered it will be ok. If you do see mould, don´t worry, its typical on jamones.
Hope this helps you.

Waitrose Serrano ham is over £40/kg, Aldi £14/kg, even if this was a third bone (which it looks like it isn't) then it would still be better value - fill yer boots!

Someone that thinks ham is halal is stupid at any level. There's a big difference between pork as an ingredient in something else and a big lump of pig flesh labelled ham.

6 Dec 15#19
Definitely use muslin or a tea towel. In clingfilm it will sweat and get mouldy. It lasts years, but needs to be dry. Salt will come to the surface, so you will get white patches, but if dry that is salt , not mould.

9 Dec 151#70
You are right it's all ham here in the UK . The thing is the ones you eat here are salted, smoked or wet cured and then you have the dry cured type Parma ham (Italian) or jamon (Spanish).
This are the names they give to it to differentiate from the other ham, even though still ham .
In Portugal you call it Presunto to a dry cured ham and fiambre to the other ham .
All ham in the end of the day .

OK just finished our one so thought I would update.
As has been pointed out these are not as big as you think and do have a decent fat layer,
ours was not as bad as some seemed to get and it trimmed off OK leaving a small taster on the slices.
The biggest issue is the texture is from rock hard to very good, probably around 25% rock hard and 50% good with the other 25% in between.
The other issue was about 25% over salty but improved as we went through the piece.
I also got a bit that had a joint in the middle so it started to fall apart as we used it up.
Overall not that good a buy(should have weighed in the waste), glad I did not get another one.
I think we will try a big one next time, less than 2.5 times the price for well over 4x the meat so should get a better £/kg ratio and as I can do a small one in 2 weeks should be able to eat a big one before it goes over.
(I think there are still some bigs ones around saw Tesco had them last week)
