Fair point, but are you trying to say that you will find a Quad Core i7, 7200rpm or SSD HDD, with a dedicated graphics cards for even close to £399???

If they'd have put in an SSD it'd be a really good machine.
I need the laptop for Adobe CC (Indesign, Photoshop and Illustrator) - nothing too intense, just designing logos, flyers, editing images etc
This has HD Graphics 4400 and the other has HD Graphics 5500 - will this also make a difference in terms of Adobe CC use?

Hmmm too many choices. Is it easy to put an ssd in?

In terms of speed there's very little in it for your tasks between those two processors. And yes, the CC suite will take advantage of the HD graphics on the Intel chip for a few of the functions within Photoshop (resizing, filters, etc). The RAM will help on the asus, a little, and future proof it.
However, for your requirements I'd suggest you look for a laptop with a better resolution/high quality screen. 1920x1080 will be satisfactory with a decent brightness and colour reproduction. Much better for editing photos.

Thank you for the advice! Looks like I may have to up my budget.

Is this any good? 768p and HDD seems a bit like a joke. If it had Full HD and you could add an SSD, I might be tempted. The CPU is also out of date, and the latest generation would have better graphics.

Dual core i7, 5400rpm HDD, 1366 x 768 screen & no dedicated graphics?... not that good of a deal if you ask me.

that dual core i7 is really bad. Just a slow CPU with only 2 cores. I bought a year ago on Ebay used laptop: ASUS quad core 3 gen i7, 8GB ram, 2x1TB HDD, 17" FHD screen, 650M dedicated graphics, very good speakers (and external bass speaker) for £400

What was the deal you got for £400 ?
Sounds similar to want i would want now.. But have 1 SSD & 1 HDD instead of 2 x HDD
Do you know of anything available like that ?

Note that the laptop he mentions was purchased second hand.

Your post makes no sense as you are essentially comparing it to the price of a second-hand item. Not even going to get into the debate about the spec / time you purchased / what else is available at this price!

Does this have dedicated graphics?

I have just sold this laptop on ebay as i didnt get on with. Quick boot up times and processor and ram make it fast but the screen is terrible!
Very poor quality screen, its very dim even at max brightness settings and not fhd.

Really, with him owning one, I'm going to heed his warning about poor quality screen.

I'd go for one with a branded GFX card (nvidia or amd). In laptops they can't really be replaced, but I managed to make my old ASUS last by upgrading RAM and Hard drive down the line, and the graphics card just about kept up. It ran photoshop well  too bad i just sucked at photo editing

I'm after similar laptop mainly for photoshop. Its a minefield to find a decent one without geek knowledge. Unfortunately I have different unrelated geek knowledge. Is it possible to get something decent that doesnt way a ton, good visuals, fast and upgradable for less than 500? or is it a mere dream?
Thanks

Also after a laptop for the similar use for Photoshop and illustrator but man, its hard to find. I was looking at a Asus ZenBook UX305.

Reportedly these have a poor display so probably not the best for graphics work.
