Good news for motorists: we're cutting the price of unleaded to 101.7ppl and diesel to 104.7ppl from tomorrow
Blurb
From tomorrow (Wednesday 9th December) drivers filling up at any of our filling stations across the country will pay no more than 101.7p per litre for unleaded petrol and 104.7p per litre for diesel.
Asda is the only retailer that has a national price cap on fuel, ensuring every single one of our customers knows the maximum price they will pay at the pump regardless of where they live.

Asda always seem to be at the forefront of cuts to fuel prices, glad to hear once again they're taking the lead. At my local, petrol is currently £1.11 per litre for petrol which is appalling. Yeah - it's because it's made from the sweepings off the refinery floor. No idea how they get away with claiming it meets BS (that's British Standards by the way). 8 Dec 151#47
There's a load of reasons why cold weather lowers MPG. The most obvious being that your fuel economy is much worse when the engine is below optimal temperature - and it takes longer to reach optimal temperature in colder air. Doesn't affect motorway driving really but most city trips are short so makes a massive difference

8 Dec 15#50
With Brent crude prices still in freefall, if you take a look at the current wholesale ex-refinery prices, you will see that, after adding the fuel duty and VAT, the ex-refinery contract offered price of petrol and diesel are roughly the same, AND that ex-refinery price has now dropped to about 94-95p per litre - a drop of about 3p per litre in the last 2 weeks. Add the delivery costs and profit for the petrol station and prices should now be at or under £1. The spot prices for petrol and diesel are well under those contract prices, so special offers at independents should also be available. No doubt both Asda and Morrisons used those prices to run their promotions last weekend, when I filled up at 96.7p (Morrisons, Leamington). I was in there today to fill up again, back up to 103.7p. Somebody is still making a nice profit right now, buying at spot prices and selling high.

Indeed, with oil at $0 per barrel, add the costs to get it from the oil fields, refine it, add UK govt taxes (duty and VAT) and get it to the refinery gate, ship it to the filling station, for the filling station to sell it at 0 profit, you are looking at a base price of about 75p per litre. It matters not what prices of oil do, that base is pretty much immovable. Below that and the refinery shuts down, restricting supply. At just under $40 a barrel, nobody makes much money with petrol at 99p a litre. Even if oil fell to $20 a barrel, that would only knock another 10p off per litre. You might ask why, and the UK govt taxes is why. Why is fuel 20% cheaper in Ireland? Taxes. I don't think anybody can think that the oil industry is making excessive profits right now, so why not turn our attention to what is (now) the real reason why prices are still at this £1 level? Taxes.

Still being ripped off in the UK! But we all know that don't we.
It really is about time that we had a fuel that Saudi Arabia etc. can't hold us to ransom with.
Here is a current fuel price chart sorted by Diesel price. (You can re-sort by the selector under the red banner).
It clearly shows (1 of 56) we pay a lot more for Diesel than most? Why? - because of high taxes plus we aren't moaning enough!
France is E1.08 (£0.79) and we are E1.507 (£1.09) per litre.
Super rich Luxembourg is E0.946 (£0.69) because we help them by letting all the multi-national companies pay their taxes there!
Yes, but as rightly explained above tax is the key factor for our relatively high prices. To an extent the environmentalist lobby can be blamed for this, but also the somewhat rapacious UK state.

Crude oil is around $40 a barrel, which will produce around 72 litres of refined petrol. That equates to around 37p a litre. Then add on transport costs, profit, vat, fuel tax etc. and we suddenly jump to over a £1.00 a litre - that's one hell of a jump !!
trevornelmes to yotmon
9 Dec 15#121
A barrel of Brent will make that much petrol, but lots of other product as well, so the price for the petrol itself is a lot less than that per litre. A LOT less, but it is variable. It depends how much they can sell the other parts for. In turn, what they have other than petrol and diesel etc depends on which well and field the oil comes from. One reason why Brent is so much more expensive than other oil is that it yields more petrol per barrel. The refinery mixes these different oils to get the output mix of product that they need. One reason why diesel is more expensive in the UK is that the UK refineries are not so well designed (most plant is quite old, from the pre-diesel car decades) to make diesel, so we have to import a lot.

trevornelmes
9 Dec 15#125
I would agree, the price should be around 95-99p per litre right now based on current market prices, but there IS a delay between the oil being bought at that price and it arriving at the fuel station. The current price of petrol is based on where oil was 1-2 weeks ago, and even now based on those prices it should be at just under £1 per litre, not just over, so about 2-3p per litre too high. Since then it has fallen quite a lot. Makes the £1.15 per litre in my village today at the BP station a bit steep, but the big supermarkets (those that sell fuel anyway) are only 6 miles away. Our new Sainsbury's was refused permission to sell fuel because the local BP station's business would have been ruined.
Billythebubble

And typically nobody will challenge BP in court although I would bring in governing bodies from London on local planning permission refusal if I were Sainsbury's.

For example another member posted petrol in Kingston MK @ tesco is £1.01, which is only like 20 minutes down the road from me! I hope MRH try to beat them this time..
I've noticed the Esso garages take over by Euro garages are now rediculously expensive! For example 2 weeks ago, Stevenage and Hitchin were both £1.09, yet Stevenage one had a tesco charging £1.04 literally 200/300 yards up the road. Both garages used to be competitive before the take over.

PetrolPrices.com used to do the same, but I find that it is often days late or simply innaccurate. I wonder If Asda will Follow the price reductions in Northern Ireland. Most Supermarkets ie Tesco,Asda etc have different prices here even if their own stores are less than ten miles away from each other. We are still paying in the region of £1-07 to £1-10 for derv and a couple of pence less for petrol. I must admit TESCO is the biggest offender when it comes to keeping prices high or the quickest at raising them. There are now local companies taking them on and are generally a few pence cheaper all year round, as usual they are concentrated in the greater Belfast area. So us folk that don't live in Belfast or Londonderry do not avail of the cheaper prices. Still the UK is milking the motorists for money while wasting billions overseas in uncoordinated bombing of Isis and handing so called aid to countries like India that is so poor it has a space program we can't afford and has the second largest economy in the far east next to China. This country is turning into a joke. We need a government that puts The UK and its people first ,
Opening post
Good news for motorists: we're cutting the price of unleaded to 101.7ppl and diesel to 104.7ppl from tomorrow
Blurb
From tomorrow (Wednesday 9th December) drivers filling up at any of our filling stations across the country will pay no more than 101.7p per litre for unleaded petrol and 104.7p per litre for diesel.

So it's actually cheaper now. And cars are more economical.
I still very much drive my car and bike around for fun!
I was going Haydock so just nipped the Asda garage there to avoid traffic near ours and paid 103.7 :disappointed:
Great marketing but unless it starts coming down by double figures, it's only ever going to be pence.
Annoyingly, our Asda has no petrol station :disappointed:
Looks like Tesco already beat Asda reducing prices at the pumps today 8th
So the fuel price is dropping in line with the crude oil price but the goverment still takes the same amount of duty.
What I don't get is why diesel is more expensive than petrol again.
Some people just like to think they get more MPG from brand names though, keeps them happy and they're not doing any harm

Currently at 40.20, and since the US exchanges opened it has been dropping every few minutes. It DID dip below $40 for a few minutes in European trading earlier today, but not for long. At this rate it will go below again by 9PM today. BUT, do remember that the Pound has also fallen against the US Dollar, quite badly, to around $1.50 right now.
I want to know when the price of Gas & Electric is going to fall, because EDF has almost unbelievably increased its price by 5% this Winter !
Local garage had it a week, in the end changed to Shell diesel.
Started first turn of the key.
Price is great though, heat added.

Locally I have seen BP take on our local Council on retrospective planning refusal who quaked at the threats of their layers reprisals......enough said really.
Unfortunately your issue known as postcode pricing is totally wrong!
If you really wanted a better deal on petrol....you would put in the premium stuff as better for your motor
If you have a iphone, this is a decent little app: https://itunes.apple.com/gb/app/whatgas-petrol-prices/id674965028?mt=8
Will give you approx price per pump and where the decent stations are near you
Weird.
