What do you need a display for on a 4GB mp3 player? So you can see how little features it has and browse through your six albums? My ipod shuffle is five years old, never had a single problem with it, dropped it hundreds of times and I don't have some tatty cheap screen to crack when I'm doing weights in the gym.

I'm not getting the comments about sound quality.
Mp3's are digital files where surely the only difference you'll get in sound quality is the bitrate the music files are stored and played at.
It's the headphones you use that make the difference no?
Apple earphones are shocking, but then it's not like you get a set of Bose in-ear phones with any other player.
If you use the earphones you get with any device, then expect average sound quality at best.

Look at the state of that thing you linked. Shuffles are stripped back music players for running or short listens. Super light and only a few controls to operate which is a blessing when you're knackered and trying to do something in a device.

Rather pick up a Sansa Clip+
£30 for a 2GB MP3 with no display, no thanks.
MP3 is digital, correct - this is exactly the problem.
Headphones aren't digital, they're analogue.
It's the DAC - Digital to Analogue converter that will result in sound quality, and the one on the shuffle is terrible.
Of course you can get an external DAC, but then it gets rid of the point of the tiny music player.

Link to these 30 quid devices that make the Shuffle look rubbish?
That thing is hideous, badly built, bulky compared to a Shuffle which is used for sports, and comes with some ancient charging unit. Why is there a screen on it? How can you see a screen when it's clipped on to your shorts? You need to use controls on the earphones. Or if they break easily be able to change controls simply going by feel without looking at the device while on the go.
SD Card slot? Are you f***ing kidding me? You want to take something with slot on it out in the rain? Who's bright idea was that?
This is what you're comparing to a Shuffle?

Exactly. Got outed as having absolutely no clue what you're talking about by linking to some POS and now you're throwing out the random insults.
Just to further add to how useless that thing you linked to is - it has a plastic finish, which can be irritating next to the skin. When you clip a Shuffle to your shorts, the clip rests against your skin. It has a soft anodised finish that never gets cold or irritates when rubbing, even after 50k+ it still won't bug you. Which by the way is a major concern for anyone doing distance or endurance training. Even the slightest of seams on clothes turn into a nightmare in long distance.
Clueless. Go on, link to some other POS so we can laugh at you.

While I'm definitely in ant-Apple-ripoff camp, you must be out of your mind if you consider DAC in the Philips to be even close in terms of sound quality. iPod has much better frequency response (20 Hz to 20 kHz) vs poor 80 Hz to 18kHz in SA4VBE04KN. Same for SNR... the list goes on and on...
That of course does not mean you should buy shuffle, but make informed decisions.
Nexusfifth
15 Dec 151#49
Both of you are missing the point entirely, you won't watch any movies on that screen I sincerely doubt anyone would, the reason why you want a screen is so you have a better way of choosing what you want to play and possibly get some artwork on it.
Someone also mentioned that shuffle will survive abuse better and while this is true this almost certainly has a plastic screen which is very hard to destroy and even if you end up destroying it, there is no reason you can't continue using it as a "shuffle" like player.
All in all, apart from design there is virtually no reason to go for Apple, you can find shuffle clones on ebay for cca 5£ which actually sound better and apart from design and possibly durability (although I have one which is in its 6th year and never lost a beat)...
As with most Apple products they are very good at design and marketing and not so good at delivering an actually good product.

The simple ability to look down and see what the hell track I'm actually ON, isn't a "gimmick". It's a basic entry level requirement for making an mp3 player. The only reason I mentioned the video playback is because it's just an extra option. You don't have to put videos on there you can just use it as a straight mp3 player. People use these things in different ways and I suppose I was only coming from the direction that I use mine in - in bed at night to listen to stories to help me sleep. But I do need to see what the hell I'm actually listening to when some stories are split into parts etc. So in that sense of course and for many other reasons - this thing would be utterly useless.

You can put around 80 albums on a 4Gb MP3 player, yet for some in this thread that's not enough that a screen would ever be useful. Even the fact that on some other players you can *optionally* add a MicroSD card has been criticised.

I got given one, the sound quality was so poor I never used it again. They must have used the worst audio chip in the world, because it even stinks compared to other iPod's.
Plus cheap MP3's players from a decade ago have more features than the current shuffle (legitimately useful stuff like a screen, radio etc), really goes to show the extent of Apple's brainwashing that such a thing can even sell.

One shuffle went through the washing machine without any issues. Clip is strong and fits on clothes for with exercise. The difference is that people with zero interest in the product whatsoever are jumping all over Apple threads, all over the site, to warn consumers about the perils of free choice.
Whereas if you go on a thread for something like a Samsung S6, there's an uncanny lack of iPhone owners posting why they wouldn't buy an S6.

This is an MP3 player. Making alternative suggestions is quite different from going into an iPhone thread and posting about Android phones. I wouldn't do that, but I would certainly recommend an alternative to the Shuttle, unless the key thing for someone is the weight and clip. I decided on the Clip+ myself after reading comments on threads here, and I'm glad of that.

When a company, regardless of the quality of its actual product, start to think in those terms, there are serious question that will arise about buying and therefore financing them.

Not to try and pick holes in your argument but when I've clicked on the link, the people on that list aren't Apple employees. Plus I suspect 'evangelist' is one of these new-fangled corporate buzzwords - have a search on LinkedIn for the number of people with titles such as 'creative disruptor'. I had someone add me a few months ago who's got 'Sales Wolf' in his title.

Clearly this is the one to go for:
Never be embarrassed by your lack of power. It even takes a replaceable AAA battery.
Opening post
2GB internal storage - enough for 4-8 albums (lossless quality)

Mp3's are digital files where surely the only difference you'll get in sound quality is the bitrate the music files are stored and played at.
It's the headphones you use that make the difference no?
Apple earphones are shocking, but then it's not like you get a set of Bose in-ear phones with any other player.
If you use the earphones you get with any device, then expect average sound quality at best.
Apples and oranges etc.
I agree with one of the other comments about battery. and how awkward it is to get music on there... and with a WHOPPING 2gb!!!! hell yeah.. that's a NO!

Wise up. This is a bog standard MP3 player, not a Shuffle competitor.
Go on, give us a laugh.
Who's next? Anyone wants to link to a 'Shuffle beater'?
Sorted - hot deal :stuck_out_tongue: (Actually, I can't stand Apple, so Cold from me ...)
No, all music players must have a screen even if it will be tucked away in your shorts never to be looked at.
Must. Have. A. Screen.
Keep it coming.
Enjoy it mate.
Meanwhile, I'll stick to my rockboxed clip+ with expandable storage and multiple playlist options.
I think it's a great little device for when you don't want to have your large phone in your pocket (i.e. gym or running). There's technically better devices for cheaper, but when all your music is in iTunes anyway...
If you like shiny, minimalist stuff, that's fine. I'll pass on this ...
That of course does not mean you should buy shuffle, but make informed decisions.
Can we not all just agree its personal choice and apple users are Wally's? Okay the last bit as a joke. I always thought my apple phone I had was well built and worked seamlessly, its only two failings were being to restrictive and to expensive
Think about that for a moment!
some people don't like Apple and can't see why other people prefer them.
each to their own.
I really like Apple stuff as it is just so well put together even though I own a HTC one m8 and android tablet.
big deal. move on.
Thank God there are more folks on the righteous side, saving money rather than lining the pockets of fat cats with the over-priced shiny fruit based guff made in far eastern sweatshops.
Seriously though, it's rubbish. If you are a runner you then you'll have your phone on tracking the GPS of your session with a £5 rainproof armband to hold it…..and the earphones are terrible.
I can’t believe this is still being made, sold or bought in this day and age!
I'm sure the Shuttle is great for some, but amazing how much nonsense some people will spout when criticising an alternative to an Apple product.
The choice:
2gb player with no expandable storage and horrible interfacing software but the cool name or the 4Gb player with no expandable storage but with longer battery life and a tiny video screen capable of playing a very limited amount of video too and a less cool name.
Both at the same price.
The decision is easy.
The Sandisk Jam 8Gb player with expandable storage for £5 less.
Seems quite reasonable.
No brand hate, just an objective view of value with regards to specification.
Real only thing on here that has more brand hate than apple is the droids own threads, so much bickering and moaning its unreal, worth a look for anyone wanting a laugh. Comments on one of the recent android deals for a refurb was voted hot, but don't know why because you can get a new one for a tenner more. Says it all really.
Yeah...as a runner I think I would prefer the shuffle, and I'm not a huge fan of Apple. It looks better, is smaller, and I think the screen would be redundant too, why would you want to watch such a small screen, pointless. And let's face it, the Phillips is quite an ugly design...
Plus cheap MP3's players from a decade ago have more features than the current shuffle (legitimately useful stuff like a screen, radio etc), really goes to show the extent of Apple's brainwashing that such a thing can even sell.
there is one thing ive noticed apple products last a long time
years ago i used to buy mp3 players which cost around £15 -£20 a pop then after several had broken i decided to buy a ipod i think the price was £100 a lot of money
for at least 5 years i used that ipod in work every single day for at least 5 hours
plus that ipod still works 9 years later and if i didnt have my ipod touch it would still being used daily
I do not know the quality of the one you showed but if i needed a music player for daily use and a good chance it will still be working years later then i would buy the ipod
The reaason id go for the shuffle is because its smaller, lighter and I can clip it onto my clothing.
I won two of these, an iPod classic, nano and iPod touch over the years and they are fantastic. They just work perfectly every time with no fuss. Even the earphones that come with them are perfect for what you need. Battery is great, buttons are well placed and work every time, synced so easily with iTunes. One shuffle went through the washing machine without any issues. Clip is strong and fits on clothes for with exercise. I will buy another when these ones die in a few years but they show no signs of wear. Sometimes the best product isn't the cheapest one with the highest specs.
To summarize they are minimalistic and perfect at what they do. Hot
Great for the gym though!
Same class.
Yeah....I see your point now.....Ipod shuffles make lousy story tellers....I heard that they cheat and skip to the ending without warning :stuck_out_tongue:
I can see perfectly that the Shuffle would be great for runners, but other than that, a 2gb player in 2015 for £29, with or without screen, is really not a great deal.
Whereas if you go on a thread for something like a Samsung S6, there's an uncanny lack of iPhone owners posting why they wouldn't buy an S6.
It genuinely doesn't offend me that different people like different things, but from reading some of the comments on here, it winds others up something rotten.
Same as posts of expensive road cycling bikes and I could get a car for that...
If you have nothing good to say then vote cold and post a link of the same item cheaper to help shoppers.
Giving people an informed alternative (no matter the reason) is certainly nothing to warrant the hyperbole of "warn[ing] consumers about the perils of free choice".
When a company, regardless of the quality of its actual product, start to think in those terms, there are serious question that will arise about buying and therefore financing them.
