Isn't this standard price? and don't forget that 4G is only upto 6gb then it gets throttled.

"What does ‘Always On’ data mean?
Our Always On goodybag is designed to give you peace of mind that you'll always have access to data. With Always On you get 6GB of UK data at full 4G speeds and then an unlimited data allowance at a reduced speed (256kbps) from 8am to midnight. From midnight to 7.59am you have an unlimited data allowance at full speed."

I left giffgaff for three, haven't looked back. Gg had terrible speeds, the worst signal, and prices are no longer competitive.

Due to the way giffgaff's community revolves around payback points and referrals you will always be spammed by a legion of shills.

According to ofcom the 4G speeds (of any network) should be 5 times faster than the 3G speeds. I am sure others on giffgaff can agree with me that 4G speeds are definitely 5 times better than the 3G speeds giffgaff provides.

Its just that 3G speeds is about 1 to 2mbps during peak hours, that the relative speed of giffgaff's 4G cant be comparable to that of EE.

Its a retention deal....original price i believe was around £16.99 or so im told, but last year i got it for £13.50 which also came with free netflix for 6 months, and i just managed to get it reduced to £10 this year also with the 6 months netflix...oh and first 3 months are unlimited data (but i believe thats just a standard offering with Vodafone if you get any one of their red value bundles.

Forget GiffGaff - I was with them for 4 years +, and their data speed is crap. I've now migrated to O2, where my data speed is 10 times that of GiffGaff (I kid you not) ..

Comparable speed test with GiffGaff and O2 iPhones side by side, both connected to a 4G Matt no more than 100m away. GiffGaff 1.8mb download speed, O2 19.6mb download speed - that says it all.

I'm also getting a much better voice signal in places, where GiffGaff was non existent, figure that one out !

Oh, and my new tariff on O2 is unlimited calls, unlimited texts, and 20gb of 4G data for just £20 per month with free accidental insurance for my iPhone 6s + ...

So, cold from me ..

Data speeds may be rubbish, but I'm still heading back to giffgaff after several months trying a different supplier, everyone else just seems too expensive, can't believe how the price for data keeps going up and up.

Yeah i think i made it worse by applying over and over again. but you cannot get quidco or topcashback cash back with phone orders! and it was 90 quid off a deal cut by 25pc! with free netflix i was getting 20gb of data for 17 quid... when i spoke to someone from vodafone about why order failed they said i passed credit check but carphone warehouse ultimately failed me on credit check... let me know by email two days after the order though!? it is all weird...
NickyOhMG
13 Nov 15 #71
You could try getting a sim in someone else's name you live with? If you keep trying and they are refusing you're credit check must be failing and it will only make it worse if you keep applying over and over! or you could call and see what they say sometimes they'll ask for a deposit and compete the order of its credit score issues.
jameshothothot
12 Nov 15 #66
Nicky. Where do you live? I recall tethering to my ps3 from giffgaff in central london ec1 before i moved to three and got 480p if not 720p from what I recall. I don't know how much it has changed these days. They all depend I n the area. I get no signal from three but 4 bars from giffgaff but not signed up yet to assess speeds.
NickyOhMG to jameshothothot
13 Nov 15 #70
I'm from Glasgow but it doesn't really make much difference it's all too do with Giffgaff having too many customers and not renting enough bandwidth from o2 so putting restrictions all over it so everyone can get some use! Ill get 22mbits/s from o2 at home but 256kbps from GG or at max 2mbits at the start of the day so it's at least ten times slower using the same masts and mobile! (But usually 100x slower than o2 which is ridiculous really)

Giffgaff are spending any profits they make straight on advertising which is clear to see lately rather than buying more bandwidth to cope with demand of new customers so it will inevitably get worse with more people falling for the unlimited internet nonsense and signing up! Their answer on their own forums is always that they have finite bandwidth so they can't offer full speed all of the time - in other words use your phone between midnight and 8am when you're sleeping if you want to do anything and during the day accept 256kbps!

if only three rolled out 800mhz to everyone not just four phones then could get goos signal in central London

hmm so it is like second rate payg speed... i read that... but been trying to get vodadone deal 20 gig for 30 quid (was 40) with cashback and i applied 6 times and they all didn't go through. offer expired now. even tried with carphone warehouse last time. cynic in me says they wont offer cashback.....

NickyOhMG
12 Nov 15 #64
It's laughable that you're allowed to tether you're -not so unlimited- 6GB unlimited tariff. It is barely usable on one phone never mind another device connected! 256kbps can be expected during you're "full speed" data as well during peak hours - basically the whole day - as once you use 100mb of data on any one day they restrict your speed for unfair usage. So it might seem okay at 8am watch a video and by quarter passed you'll be on the mobile equivalent of dial up! Same if you choose 3G unlimited it gets restricted if "unfairly" used...so unlimited refers to an unlimited service at a phenomenal rate of 256kbps. That's all you're guaranteed and all you get most of the time.

DON't DO IT if you live in London, I just got this a month ago after being with Virgin (EE) on the same unlimited plan . Giffgaff's (O2's) 4G is slower than Virgin's 3G, Giffgaff's 3G barely works in London. In the process of moving to EE after just one month on Giffgaff. Shocking performance.

does anyone know what happens if you try and tether on the 256kb/s after your 6gb is up. they say it is forbidden. but i tend to tether to my tablet on the train and i think this should be enough to get lowest quality netflix and youtube. no idea why they don't let you tether when speed restricted? even if want to just browse a website on a tablet or laptop? no tethering?

Legally and exactly, Hutchison Whampoa owns Three and it is Hutchison that is the investment holding company that bought O2. But effectively Hutchison owns Three so really Three needed to have a much bigger presence in the UK market so in practice Three "bought out" O2 for all intends and purpose.

Found the opposite at home near Bath and at work in Cardiff. At home on BT mobile and 3 I get barely enough signal in most rooms to make or receive a phone call, let alone data. At work marginal 3G at my desk in the centre of Cardiff. Mileage varies greatly IMO doesn't seem to be any network that gets consistent signal in all places.

HankHandsome
11 Nov 15 1 #22
yeah, that's what i was thinking as well. the 6G of 4G would be good as i tend to average that amount each month as it is, but if the speed is pretty bad either way it's not worth it. i suppose it could be useful to try and batter the cost down with virgin though ..

Yes, you sure can. You can tether with a £20 goodybag for the first 6GB of data, after you reach that limit tethering will no longer be allowed. We will send you a text when you’re about to reach the end of your data. Tethering will work on all smartphones and other devices with an inbuilt tethering feature, such as laptops and tablets."
